The knitting nannies of Alford have unveiled their war horse which they made out of wire mesh and adorned with red and purple poppies. This is just one part of the massive community effort to honour the town's war heroes - and the animals that died in conflict.

00:00 Ulfhut's knitting nannies have created some breathtaking displays ahead of Remembrance Day
00:06 with Poppy the War Horse taking centre stage outside St Wilfhurt's Church.
00:11 We decided that this time last year we were going to build a display for Remembrance this year.
00:17 We usually do something and it was just a sudden 'I want to build a horse'
00:22 so we started with wire which was very kindly donated by Arthur Memorials
00:30 and basically we just started from there just after Christmas
00:34 and it's taken six months which has turned out absolutely beautiful.
00:40 I visited the handyman shop and Rachel happened to mention that she was going to be making a horse for the Memorial Parade
00:48 so thinking of what we could do to help wasn't a great deal
00:53 but we kindly donated all the wire and also the name plaque on the granite for the horse
00:59 just for being involved in that good cause really.
01:02 What do you think to it?
01:04 It's wonderful, really it's nice, I believe it's being auctioned off afterwards
01:09 so it may even find its way to our workshop outside.
01:14 Now I understand you're a local mobile hairdresser and you've got some of your ladies to help with this?
01:21 Yes, me and my friend Joanne, we've got loads of our ladies to come and knit some poppies.
01:26 Loads of men knitted for years but they've all got together with the community and joined in the project.
01:31 What do you think to the finished displays?
01:34 It looks fabulous, yeah, really really impressed, everyone's done a great job, it's a great community effort.
01:40 Oldford Art and Craft Circle have also been knitting poppies for displays at the Cornish Challenge.
01:46 Now I'm here with one of the members of the craft group, what do you think to the display?
01:53 I think it's fantastic, we've had such good feedback about it as well.
01:59 What's it meant to you personally to be involved in this?
02:05 I don't know, it's lovely to be part of the community and the cause it was for kept us all going I think.
02:13 To remember people who have given their lives up for us, I think that's fantastic.
02:20 And you were telling me about a member of your family that you remember at this time?
02:25 Yes, my father, yes.
02:27 So I felt that sometimes I was making the poppies, I mean although it came back, I felt that I was making them for him.
02:36 As well as displays around town, a festival of remembrance and coffee mornings are being held to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
02:43 I just think it's absolutely amazing how Oldford, a lot of ladies have put their time and effort into making Oldford look absolutely fantastic.
02:54 After Remembrance Day, the War Horse will have a new home because it is to be auctioned for the Poppy Appeal.
