Wiradjuri man Bernard Higgins teaches us a few words of language, and the true meaning of yindyamarra.
Transcript
00:00 Yirra marang, you and Nadi, Bernard Higgins. I just said g'day, my name is Bernard Higgins in Wiradjuri language.
00:08 To say thank you in Wiradjuri you say mandangu. Mandangu is how you would say thank you.
00:18 Is there a word in Wiradjuri that you wish we had in English?
00:24 I mean like, it would probably be really good if there was an easy way to explain in English what yirra marang means.
00:36 When you start talking about yirra marang and being respectful to each other and caring and considerate and trying to make the world a better place.
00:49 It can be explained but it's like you're suddenly using sentences in English to try to say a Wiradjuri core value.
01:01 So I think it would be really nice to be able to just have a word in English to sort of sum up.
01:09 Like how do you make the world better? How do you look after one another? How do you look after the rivers and the lands and the environment and people?
01:21 And care for one another and respect each other and do things respectfully and slowly and gently and kindly. All in one word.
01:33 Thank you.
