  • last year
Rishi Sunak says he wants to "take the lead" in protecting people against the risks posed by Artificial Intelligence. Speaking in Downing Street on the first day of a UK government summit on AI safety, the British prime minister said although jobs will change, AI will be ‘good for the economy and will create jobs over time’. 00:00 already starting to play an impact in our lives, particularly in public services like
00:04 health and education.
00:05 Now, the reason we're hosting this summit is because AI technology is developing at
00:09 an incredible pace.
00:11 The people who are developing the technology themselves have raised some concerns about
00:15 what might happen, how it might be used by bad actors, and I want to take a lead in protecting
00:20 the British people.
00:21 That's why we've convened everyone to talk about these risks.
00:24 It's why we've created an AI safety institute here in the UK, doing more on this than anyone
00:28 else in the world.
00:29 It's very hard to predict how the labour market will change as a result of the new technology,
00:34 but history tells us that, you know, of course some jobs will change, but overall, as technology
00:38 makes things cheaper or makes us more productive, that's overall good for the economy and creates
00:43 jobs over time.
00:45 My job is to make sure that we help people to succeed whatever happens.
00:50 Earlier this year, we established something called the Defending Democracy Task Force.
00:55 It involves our security services as well, and that task force is charged with ensuring
01:01 the integrity of our democratic processes like elections.
01:05 And as I said, this is something that we've already been working on, and AI is one of
01:10 the things that AI does, is make those risks much greater, because things can happen on
01:16 a much greater scale far faster than they could have happened before.
