00:00 I'm Chandler, I make jokes when I'm uncomfortable.
00:03 Matthew Perry's co-stars mourn the loss of their friend.
00:08 Friends stars Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox,
00:11 Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow
00:15 speak out for the first time
00:17 since their former co-star's death
00:19 at the age of 54 on October 28th.
00:22 In a joint statement, the stars say,
00:25 "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew.
00:29 "We were more than just castmates, we are a family."
00:33 It continues, "There is so much to say,
00:35 "but right now we're going to take a moment
00:38 "to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.
00:42 "In time, we will say more, as and when we are able.
00:46 "For now, our thoughts and our love
00:48 "are with Matty's family, his friends,
00:51 "and everyone who loved him around the world."
00:54 Matthew, of course, starred as the beloved Chandler Bing
00:57 on the mega-hit sitcom for 10 seasons.
01:00 He was found dead in an apparent drowning
01:03 at his Los Angeles home on October 28th,
01:06 according to a rep for the actor
01:08 and a law enforcement source per NBC News.
01:12 The comedian's family tells People in a statement,
01:15 "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss
01:18 "of our beloved son and brother.
01:20 "Matthew brought so much joy to the world,
01:23 "both as an actor and a friend.
01:25 "You all meant so much to him, and we appreciate
01:28 "the tremendous outpouring of love."
01:31 Six days before his death,
01:32 Perry shared a photo of himself
01:34 sitting in a hot tub on Instagram.
01:37 It was his final post.
01:39 The actor was born in Massachusetts in 1969
01:42 and raised in Canada.
01:44 However, at age 15, he moved from Ottawa to Los Angeles
01:47 to finish high school and pursue an acting career.
01:51 He earned four Emmy nominations throughout his career,
01:54 including one for "Friends,"
01:56 two for a guest role on "The West Wing,"
01:59 and one for his performance in the TNT movie,
02:02 "The Ron Clark Story."
02:04 Throughout his life, the actor battled alcohol
02:07 and drug addiction.
02:08 He detailed his struggles in his memoir,
02:11 "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,"
02:14 released in November of 2022.
02:16 Matthew later told Diane Sawyer in an interview
02:20 why it was important for him to be an advocate
02:23 for others seeking a sober life.
02:26 - Addiction, the big terrible thing,
02:28 is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone.
02:32 But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down.
02:36 - Yeah, I believe that's true.
02:38 Your disease is just outside,
02:41 just doing one-arm pushups, just waiting,
02:43 just waiting for you, waiting to get you alone.
02:47 Because alone, you lose to the disease.
02:51 And now I finally feel okay
02:53 and feel like I've got some strength.
02:55 - What does it mean to feel okay?
02:57 - It means that I've developed some safety nets around this.
03:04 I'm doing really well now.
03:06 For some reason, it's obviously because I was on "Friends,"
03:10 more people will listen to me.
03:12 So I've gotta take advantage of that.
03:14 I've gotta help as many people as I can.
