00:06 There's a lot to unpack as the credits roll on Five Nights at Freddy's.
00:10 Warning, spoilers ahead."
00:12 While Five Nights at Freddy's borrows much of the plot of the original game, there are
00:16 new elements in the film that make the lore of Mike Schmidt even more interesting.
00:21 The Josh Hutcherson version of the character is still reeling from the kidnapping of his
00:26 little brother Garrett.
00:27 Garrett was taken when they were both children while Mike was supposed to be watching him.
00:32 Since that fateful night, Mike has become the caregiver for his little sister Abby,
00:36 but he remains obsessed with the disappearance of his brother.
00:39 Things get worse when he begins to remember details of the kidnapping in his dreams.
00:44 His desire to take care of his sister and dream about his brother in the hopes of uncovering
00:48 more memories makes him reluctant to work the night shift, but he takes the job anyway.
00:53 Though he is supposed to be up all night working, Mike still falls asleep on the job at Freddy
00:58 Fazbear's Pizzeria.
01:00 Most crucially, it leaves him vulnerable to the rampaging animatronics, but there are
01:05 other consequences as well.
01:07 As he sleeps, he begins to see other children in his dreams.
01:11 The children are spirits that inhabit the animatronics at Freddy's, and somehow, they
01:15 know the secret of Garrett's kidnapping.
01:18 They also want to be friends with Abby, who accompanies Mike to work when her babysitter
01:22 Max mysteriously disappears, but the audience knows the truth.
01:26 She was killed while breaking into Freddy's.
01:29 And then there's Vanessa, the key to all of the mysteries at Freddy's.
01:33 She looks like a cop, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Mike and Abby are in
01:37 grave danger, and Vanessa has known the truth the whole time.
01:43 Mike's guilt about losing his brother has plagued him for over a decade, and his unresolved
01:47 trauma has bled into every aspect of his life.
01:51 He has trouble holding down a job, and he is completely consumed with solving Garrett's
01:55 case.
01:56 So when the children in his dreams offer to trade Abby for Garrett, Mike agrees without
02:01 thinking about the consequences of that decision.
02:04 With the agreement made, Abby becomes the ghost's target.
02:07 They want to trap her body and soul inside the Circus Baby animatronic.
02:12 As a part of this plan, Golden Freddy arrives at Mike's home, kills Aunt Jane, and hires
02:18 a taxi to take Abby back to the pizzeria.
02:21 Abby is oblivious to the danger she's in throughout the encounter.
02:24 Mike realizes almost too late what he has agreed to, and does everything in his power
02:28 to save Abby from a horrible fate.
02:31 He even enlists Vanessa to help rescue his sister.
02:35 Vanessa eventually reveals that the animatronics contain the bodies and souls of children captured
02:41 and killed by William Afton, the same man who took Mike's brother, Garrett.
02:45 "There are ghost children possessing giant robots?
02:48 Thanks for the heads up."
02:51 Currently, Afton poses as a career counselor and calls himself Steve Raglin.
02:56 He's the one who offers Mike the security position after realizing that Mike is Garrett's
03:00 older brother.
03:01 Vanessa knows about the deranged motivations of Afton, because she is his daughter.
03:07 For years, she's tried and failed to stop her father, but the thought of Abby becoming
03:11 another victim is too much to bear.
03:14 She joins Mike in his attempt to save his sister, and that makes Vanessa an enemy of
03:18 Freddy and his allies.
03:20 The animatronics pursue the protagonists relentlessly.
03:23 They are under the complete control of Afton, who inhabits the Spring Bonnie suit.
03:29 But it's Abby who realizes how to remind the children trapped inside the animatronics who
03:33 the real enemy is.
03:35 She draws a picture of all of the animals with a giant yellow bunny, but the drawing
03:39 depicts the bunny as the person responsible for killing them and trapping their souls.
03:44 This finally frees them of Afton's control, and they redirect their anger toward him.
03:49 Their attack leads to a springlock failure in Afton's suit, which causes him to be impaled
03:54 with metal shards and effectively traps him in Spring Bonnie.
03:58 With Afton defeated, Mike, Abby, and Vanessa flee the pizzeria as it collapses around them.
04:05 At the heart of Five Nights at Freddy's is the idea that secrets bring pain, and honesty
04:10 is the only way to survive the horrors of Freddy's Domain.
04:13 Abby's babysitter, Max, is actually out to discredit Mike so that Abby's Aunt Jane can
04:19 claim custody of her.
04:20 Their plot leads to both of their deaths.
04:23 Mike has kept what happened to Garrett from Abby, and that secret causes pain for both
04:27 of them and puts their lives in danger.
04:30 Vanessa lies about her true identity, which causes the death of countless security guards
04:35 over the years.
04:36 Like so many horror films before it, there is an underlying metaphor in Five Nights at
04:40 Freddy's one of honesty triumphing over secrecy.
04:44 Given creator Scott Cawthon's Christian background and his start as a faith-based game developer,
04:50 the theme makes perfect sense.
04:53 After surviving the terror at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, Mike and Abby are ready to start
04:57 their lives again.
04:58 Abby starts fitting in at school, Mike can finally hold down a job, and it seems like
05:03 they are both coming to terms with their life traumas.
05:06 And with Aunt Jane's death, they are no longer plagued by her attempts to take Abby away
05:10 from Mike.
05:11 They've also made a bond of sorts with the souls trapped in the animatronics at the pizzeria.
05:16 Abby admits that she'd like to see her new friends again someday, and though Mike doesn't
05:20 approve, he also doesn't completely write it off.
05:24 What neither of the siblings knows, though, is that William Afton survived the Springlock
05:28 failure, but it has left him trapped in the suit.
05:32 He is now one with Spring Bonnie.
05:34 Fans of the game will know that this results in him becoming the villain known as Springtrap,
05:39 and is likely foreshadowing him as the main villain for future sequels.
05:43 With Abby's desire to be with her friends again, and Vanessa recovering in the hospital,
05:47 could this be hinting that Mike, Abby, and Vanessa could team up again?
05:51 "All you have to do is keep your eyes on the monitor."
05:56 Months before Five Nights at Freddy's debuted, star Matthew Lillard told Weekly MTG that
06:02 he signed a three-picture deal in the FNAF universe.
06:04 The details of this deal have not been made public, and additional sequels will likely
06:08 depend on whether or not this first film performs well at the box office.
06:13 As for where the franchise could be heading, both Circus Baby and Balloon Boy were teased
06:17 throughout the film, so a visit to Circus Baby's Pizza World is a logical next step.
06:22 However, with Lillard's three-picture deal, it would not be surprising if the game Five
06:26 Nights at Freddy's 3 becomes the core plot inspiration for a sequel.
06:30 This is especially true given that Springtrap was effectively revealed during the mid-credits
06:35 scene at the end of the movie.
