00:00 Two top leaders in the country have exercised their right to vote for the Barangay and SK
00:04 elections at their designated polling precincts.
00:08 Meanwhile the chief executive emphasized the importance of voting for the Village and Youth
00:12 Council polls.
00:14 Kenneth Paciente has the details.
00:19 As President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. cast his vote in the Barangay and SK elections,
00:24 he reminded the public not to be swayed by candidates who buy votes.
00:28 According to the chief executive, every voter has the right to choose who serves their community
00:32 without being influenced by money.
00:35 "Don't throw away your right to choose your barangay officials because you know that the
00:47 barangay officials are in front of you every day.
00:51 This is what you are running for to help your problems.
00:58 So if you are just passing by Bayaran, you will not lose your voice."
01:05 The president also emphasized the importance of the BSKE and those who end up elected because
01:10 they are the first to address community problems.
01:13 The president also lamented how some candidates are not fair in running for positions.
01:18 Also he vowed the police and Comelec are focused on incidents of vote buying.
01:22 "If we receive a report, the police and Comelec will immediately go to us, especially in the
01:31 hot spot areas.
01:36 So we will do our part as the government, we will do our part to continue to enforce
01:41 all of the laws that do not allow the use of vote buying as a part of the campaign."
01:51 President Marcos Jr. stressed the importance of the barangay elections as this also has
01:55 an impact on the midterm elections, as well as to politicians running at the national
02:00 level.
02:01 This is why barangay elections often turn out and end up disorderly.
02:04 "We know the system.
02:12 As a national politician, I always say that of all the elected officials, it's the barangay
02:26 officials who can actually tell you, 'I will deliver this many votes.'
02:31 If the barangay officials say that they will deliver 350 votes to you, you can expect that
02:40 it will be 350 votes.
02:41 That's true.
02:42 That's why the results are very important for us politicians.
02:43 The results of the barangay elections are very important."
02:52 The president was among the early voters at Mariano Marcos Memorial Elementary School
02:55 in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
02:57 He arrived at around 7 o'clock this morning.
03:00 Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos also voted at the Calayab Elementary
03:05 School in Lawag City.
03:07 "The candidates they will elect will determine how efficient the services of the government
03:14 arrive to the ground here at the barangay level.
03:18 So it's really important."
03:20 Almost 600,000 voters are registered for the BSKE in Ilocos Norte, and there are nearly
03:25 9,000 positions to be filled out.
03:28 Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte cast her vote at Daniel R. Argenaldo
03:33 National High School in Matina, Davao City around 9 o'clock this morning.
03:37 "The role of our barangay officials in our government is very important because they
03:44 are what we call frontliners.
03:46 They are in our communities, they are in our grassroots.
03:51 So it's very important for them to work so that the government's services, all of
03:59 the government's work, will penetrate our barangays and communities."
04:04 VP Sara also assured teaching and non-teaching personnel who served in these barangay elections
04:09 to receive their honoraria in time.
04:11 "And their command center will close not after the election but after the honorarium
04:20 of the teachers.
04:21 So if the teachers are 100 percent downloaded and 100 percent given to the field operations,
04:30 that's when the command center of COMELEC will close so that they can be sure that they
04:35 completed the process."
04:37 Meanwhile, the deputy also assured teachers who rendered duty for the BSKE of medical
04:41 assistance and insurance.
04:43 Kenneth Paciente for The Nation.
