02:21 Defense Minister Dominic Ntewula has assured his ministries taking all the necessary steps
02:28 to restore calm to Garu in the Upper East Region. Over the weekend, some military officers stormed
02:34 the community and brutalized civilians without any provocation. Several sustained injuries in
02:40 the course of the assault. It is unclear what exactly triggered the incident. In an interview
02:47 with JOIN News' Blesa Sogan, the minister identified the suspects as national security
02:52 operatives. We'll hear from the minister soon but first here are some residents recounting their
02:58 experience. We were in the room, I and my husband. So they came and they were not here. So we thought
03:05 they were armed robbers. So we defended ourselves not knowing that they were soldiers. So they came
03:11 in and started scattering our room, asking us to bring out guns which we don't have. All our rooms,
03:17 our doors, they break everything and started beating my husband. That is what happened. They
03:22 beat him after they sent him out. They beat him to the station. It's not fair. We don't even know
03:28 why they are doing that. One of our guys fainted. Whether he will survive it or not, we are not
03:35 in the picture. We don't know what's happened. Some of our members are not there. They've taken
03:39 them away. In fact, there is what we call lawlessness in this country. And the president
03:45 and the minister of defense must be answerable to this because we Garu people, we are not just
03:48 laymen like that. We are also human beings. We enjoy human rights and we cannot allow our brothers
03:53 and sisters to suffer this kind of humiliation. It is out of bounds. We must state categorically
03:58 that if this is what the NBB government wants to bring to the people of Garu and the entire Kosak,
04:03 then they should better back up because I know that for sure in Ghana here, if there's going
04:08 to be anything that will bring about chaos in this country, it's going to be about some of
04:12 these things and nothing else. What has happened, Garu here is a very peaceful area, peace loving
04:19 people. And we have enjoyed this peace for so many years now. We don't know what the military
04:24 want and what they want to plant in Garu so that there will be insecurity for us here.
04:31 In fact, we are highly disappointed in the act that...
04:35 Well, DCE and MP for the area have been speaking on the matter.
04:46 Inferences are strongly pointing to the attack on the national security vehicles.
04:52 I've not had categorical response from the military though. But then this morning while
05:01 we were there with them to meet with them to see with us, inferences were where were we when the
05:08 boys were attacking the people and all that. So there are strong inferences to the attack on the
05:16 security vehicle. But as of now, our concern was to quickly remedy the situation and then
05:27 as quickly as possible convene as DICEC and then fashion a way out of this whole thing
05:36 and then to ensure that we are not going to have this again. So as of now, the status quo is that
05:45 people are responding to treatment at the various at the health facility in Garu.
05:52 This is coming on the back of a similar incident which happened at Ashaban, which became the
05:58 subject of a parliamentary probe. I thought that lessons would have been learned, but it appears
06:02 that, I mean, we are not learning lessons at all and these things keep recurring. I mean, it's
06:08 unfortunate. Well, these are matters that ought to be investigated. At the moment, I cannot say for
06:19 a fact that the operation was sanctioned by the higher command or some soldiers were on a frolic
06:26 of their own, which is why I ended my statement by indicating that we shall push for an investigation,
06:37 particularly given the fact that this is coming on the back of a similar incident which occurred
06:43 at Ashaban. As I speak, the committee's report on Ashaban is ready and will be debated by the House
06:52 as soon as the House reconvenes.
06:54 We can now hear from the minister who said investigations will be carried out
07:02 to deal with the culprit. We are working very hard to ensure that Ghana remains very peaceful
07:09 and that all persons who work for the security of this nation work to the best of their ability
07:17 and are given the equipment that they need to be able to work. Specifically, to the four people
07:23 that you mentioned that apparently some people misjudged them and tried to apprehend them,
07:30 they are in fact members of the national security apparatus and they were actually sent on official
07:35 duty. There was some miscommunication somewhere along the line and mistrust. It's one of the
07:41 things that we are trying to resolve. Because there's a bit of mistrust in the general Boko
07:46 area, people try to assume things that may not be right and maybe because they don't have the
07:52 initial information, may try to do things that may not be right. But we are concerned
07:56 about that mistrust and we're taking steps to address them. So we are taking steps to address
08:01 to ensure that Boko becomes very peaceful. We are taking steps to address the issue of general
08:06 mistrust and we are taking steps to ensure that not just Boko but the entire northern
08:09 zone is relatively peaceful and safe. If there are people who are not members of security agencies
08:16 who will let you... Security analyst Adeb Sani has been condemning their attack. He spoke on
08:22 the AM show. I think there is a bit of a gap, a disconnect between state security on one hand
08:32 and the people on the other hand. And it is further exacerbated by this paint of misinformation and
08:44 disinformation that is coming up from that area. Look, we have Facebook pages belonging to two
08:52 the two sides of the conflict where pictures of certain individuals are posted and threats made
08:58 to the effect that we know who you are, we have your picture and we are going to come after you.
09:04 And Benjamin, believe it or not, such people are in the end killed. In some cases, there are some
09:15 individuals on the ground who are able to disseminate false information about the movements
09:23 of certain persons they think are working closely with the other side. And within minutes, they are
09:32 able to galvanize people to engage in some of these acts of lawlessness. And I do agree with
09:41 Awa. The level of proliferation of small arms and light weapons, especially military grade rifles,
09:50 including AR-15s, M16s, AK-47s in the area, is quite worrying. In some cases, the weapons they
10:01 hold, the civilians, is even more potent than that of the military. And there has been a consistent
10:08 pattern. I'm not in any way, Benjamin, let me be clear about this. Meanwhile, several of the
10:16 victims are still on admission at various hospitals with the poor family members having to bear the
10:22 cost of the medical bills. We can listen to the medical doctor who's been attending to them.
10:29 And it's the Tamil Medical Hospital where we are sure that there are experts who
10:34 are seeing that they will be able to handle this type of attack.
10:38 And the most severe case we recorded yesterday, so at the time they arrested him, he was also one
10:48 of those who were unconscious. So he sustained some head injury, that is, some degree of
10:54 head injury to the brain. He also had multiple injuries to the chest,
11:00 including bruises and cuts all over, both in front and then at the back. If I say yesterday,
11:09 we couldn't even touch him at all. When he went unconscious and came back, we couldn't just touch
11:14 him. He also sustained, I think from what he narrated to me, one of the military men
11:21 stepped on his testicles, on his balls. So, you can imagine for a man, you know what that means.
11:28 And then in addition to that, his spine, I don't know the extent of damage to the spine, but
11:36 as at this morning, he's still not able to, as of yesterday, he couldn't even sit up.
11:43 But after managing him overnight, he's able to sit up, but he's not able to stand.
11:49 So at this point, I'm not able to tell whether he has had permanent damage to the spine,
11:57 because if the spine is involved like that, he could be paralyzed for life.
12:01 Albert Sori is our correspondent in that area. He joins us live with more. Albert,
12:08 what's the condition of the injured as we speak?
12:14 A number of them are still on admission in the Garu Presbyterian Hospital. Some are in a few
12:24 other health facilities. In addition to the patient that the doctor has just been talking about,
12:31 who is a 32-year-old patient, one more person, 39 years old, has just been transferred to
12:42 the Azimbe Hospital, which is in neighboring Binduwi, because their situation is serious,
12:49 and they need further medical attention, which they are not able to get at the Garu Presbyterian
12:54 Hospital. There have been family members who are in distress, mainly because these are unexpected
13:03 medical bills they now have to pay. And so it's becoming a very stressful situation for most of
13:10 them who have been thrown in the hospital to be with their relatives who are still injured,
13:16 a lot of them still in pain. So far, we heard about a DICEC meeting. What has been the outcome
13:28 of that meeting? So that DICEC meeting is still ongoing. A while ago, I was talking to the
13:36 regional minister's office. What we are told is that the minister left his office in Borga
13:41 about an hour or so ago. He's still on the way to Garu. He will go there and assess the situation
13:48 for himself. And so we are waiting to see what the measures are that will be taken when he
13:56 arrives there, and also for the outcome of the DICEC meeting, which is also currently ongoing.
14:03 But I must say that for many of the people in Garu, this is the first time something of this
14:10 nature has happened, and a lot of them are very anxious about it, because it also appears that
14:16 the police haven't done so much. They haven't been even talking to people to try and give them
14:22 any assurances of what is going on. Also, the people who were picked up and taken to
14:29 Accra, their relatives were not given much information as to why they were arrested.
14:35 They were just arrested, and the next thing they knew, they were taken out of the district. So
14:41 it's been a very stressful situation for many of the residents of Garu, and a lot of them
14:48 are very unhappy about the situation. Our stories are correspondent in the Upper East Region.
14:53 Definitely, we have our eyes on this. We'll bring you more in our subsequent bulletins.
14:59 Away from the Upper East Region, come up with a resettlement and compensation plan within two
15:05 weeks, or we will move our people to occupy the Sagleme Housing Project site. That's the demand
15:12 by the man-crawler of Batur Traditional Area, Togbe Poboji, from the government as flat water
15:19 begins to recede in some affected communities in the Notong District. He said he's issued the
15:26 ultimatum when the Tobinco Group of Companies donated relief items estimated at 1.5 million
15:34 citizens of flood victims in Agbe-Tigbo in the Notong District of the Volta Region. My colleague,
15:40 Carlos Kaloni, has more. The Agbe-Tigbo camp is one of the 21 safe havens for over 1,000 flood
15:48 victims in the Notong District of the Volta Region. To ease the plight of these flood victims,
15:54 the Tobinco Group of Companies on Sunday, October 29, 2023, donated tracts of relief items comprising
16:03 food, mattresses, medical supplies, among others, estimated at some 1.5 million Ghana cedis.
16:10 Speaking to the press, the group executive chairman of Tobinco Group of Companies, Samuel
16:16 Amo Tobin, urged the government to expedite action in finding a lasting solution to the plight of
16:22 flood victims. I'm pleading with our government and the world presidency. We should find a
16:28 solution to this, a lasting solution that this thing will not reoccur. Then I'm also inviting
16:34 all business people like us. They should stretch a helpful hand and I know that to be a blessing
16:40 to them and us as well as our various companies. The government should do its possible best to
16:45 relocate them in time. I don't know where the government will relocate them. That is not my
16:51 concern much. But the government should please try and relocate them in time so that our dear
16:56 children can start school. Expressing his appreciation to the Tobinco Group for its
17:01 kind gesture, Member of Parliament for North Tonga constituency, Samuel Okwujeto Ablakwa,
17:08 reiterated a need for expedited action in finding a permanent resettlement plan for flood victims.
17:15 If you look at these camps, they are camps in schools. So as long as these camps remain,
17:21 the children cannot have access to education. And let's remember that across the country,
17:26 their peers are in school. They are going to be writing the same examinations, the same BSE,
17:31 the same WASI. So how are they going to compete? They are losing out. It's not fair. So I want to
17:40 reiterate the call on the government to look at a permanent relocation. We need a resettlement plan
17:48 urgently so that the schools can be free and our children can return and pursue their academics.
17:54 I also want to add that the chiefs and people of Agbetiko and indeed all the affected communities,
18:01 there are about 30 communities affected in this constituency. They have done very well on their
18:06 own. They have identified high land and they have donated this land to anybody, including the
18:13 government, who wants to construct resettlement houses. So they have done their part. All we need
18:19 is for the government to come in and for other, you know, philanthropists to come in. But most
18:25 importantly, this is a government responsibility. It's a VRA responsibility. Meanwhile, the Mankralo
18:30 Fobato traditional area, Togbe Hevi Boboji VII, has given a two-week ultimatum to the
18:36 government to come up with a resettlement and...
18:39 Apologies for that mess up. Now, meanwhile, the Volta River Authority has initiated a major
18:53 disinfection and fumigation exercise in communities affected by the flooding resulting from the
18:59 Akosombo Dam spillage. This follows the gradual decrease in flood water in some areas of Mpe,
19:06 in the Nottong district of the Volta region. VRA's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator,
19:11 Engineer Kwame Osemen Sadakwa, says the authority is committed to ensuring the safety and
19:17 habitability of homes, public spaces and the entire community after the floods.
19:24 Schools, homes and commercial places have been fumigated as the Volta River Authority, VRA,
19:34 has commenced a major disinfection and fumigation exercise in communities affected by the flooding
19:41 resulting from the Akosombo Dam spillage. This disinfection is in response to the gradual
19:48 decrease in flood waters in certain impacted areas of Mpe, in the Nottong district of the
19:54 Volta region. In an interview with Joy News, the VRA's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator,
19:59 Engineer Kwame Osemen Sadakwa, emphasised the VRA's commitment to ensuring the safety and
20:06 habitability of homes, public spaces and the entire community following the floods.
20:11 The water in terms of the spill has receded significantly and most of the areas are very dry.
20:19 In fact, you can actually walk through them and inspect some specific houses. So we did a quick
20:25 recce together with the Assembly, with the Traditional Council, with the Health Inspector
20:31 of the Assembly, then realised that most of the places were dry and people had started going back
20:38 to stay in their respective residence. And so VRA has decided to start decontamination exercise so
20:50 that those who go there will live in a safe environment and not be exposed to any health
20:56 hazards. And so we intend to, as a matter of urgency, start the work with the Mpe area,
21:03 where the extent of inundation was quite pronounced.
21:08 Amidst the challenges faced by flood-affected communities in the Threatong district,
21:13 a beacon of hope emerged through the benevolence of Jinsa Energy, their generous outreach and
21:20 support included hundreds of relief items and essential medical supplies, extending a helping
21:26 hand to those in need. More in the following report. Guided by compassion, the Jinsa Energy
21:33 team, under the leadership of its Vice President, Daniel Ayi, embarked on a mission to ease the
21:39 burdens of these communities. Their donation was not just an act of charity, it was a symbol of
21:46 compassion to alleviating the suffering of those affected. In a heartfelt conversation with the
21:52 media following the donation, Mr. Ayi revealed the driving force behind the unknowable gesture.
21:59 We heard the news of the flood in Vota region and we thought it wise to come and then donate.
22:14 Our board of directors and the management of Jinsa Energy Ghana Limited
22:22 organized some funds for us to be able to purchase some items to come and donate.
22:33 As the affected communities receive this much needed support, the voices of their local MPs
22:41 also resonate, highlighting the unity and shared commitment to uplifting the spirits of victims
22:47 of the floods. Every day you are sending foodstuff and it's not something that you expect to last for
22:55 more than two days and that should tell you and what is happening has a long way. In fact, we are
23:01 not seeing the end yet and so this will go a long way to help. We currently are recording close to
23:10 8,000 displaced people in South Tonga and the activities are there and the numbers are increasing.
23:19 I am very happy that you have brought some medications and that will help us in the area of
23:24 health. In my area, I brought the DG, the Director General of Ghana Health Service, I brought the
23:30 Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, we brought a lot of drugs which we have shared among the facilities
23:36 in affected areas so people are now free to go and access healthcare free of charge. But the
23:42 education aspect is about semester, it's about terms, it's about period and if you don't take
23:48 care, you have a lot of problems. This act of kindness from Gensa Energy echoes the sentiment
23:56 that in times of adversity, the human spirit can shine brighter. It's a reminder that through
24:03 empathy and collective action, we can make a positive difference in the lives of those facing
24:09 adversity.
24:09 On both spillage and now to politics, NPP flagbearer hopeful Francis Adayinimo is warning the NPP
24:22 will struggle to break the 8 if it does not take steps to fix the race which he says has been skewed
24:28 in favor of the Vice President Dr. Baomiya. With barely five days for more than 200,000 delegates
24:35 of the NPP to elect a flag bearer for the 2024 election, Francis Adayinimo who is running for
24:42 the second time to lead the party says the rhetoric of Kennedy Japon, his fellow contender,
24:47 is concerning. Here are assets from the documentary focusing on the former Mampong MP.
24:55 With just a few days for more than 200,000 delegates of the governing new patriotic party
25:02 to crown a new person to lead it into the 2024 election, the race is heating up and the rhetoric
25:09 is hitting a crescendo. One of the four out of the initial list of 10 parties towards who made it
25:17 from the superdelegate conference is Engineer Adayinimo who is seeking to lead the NPP for
25:23 the second time after his first bid in 2014 failed. Welcome to the story of Adayinimo,
25:30 a man whose life is intricately woven by the fabric of Ghana itself.
25:35 I'm a 58 year old man, precisely born on 23rd March 1965 and I come from a community under
25:46 Mampong in Ashanti region called Nginampong. Just five kilometers away from Mampong
25:53 where both parents of mine they come from. So I'm an Ashanti by birth.
25:59 Adayinimo says he's a leader who solves problems, a trait he believes is essential for any visionary.
26:06 This is what has inspired him to run to lead the NPP into 2024.
26:11 I believe in problem solving or I'm a problem solver but not a problem creator.
26:22 In life we must find solutions to issues. Don't deliberately attempt to create problems
26:30 which shouldn't exist. Adayinimo's message to delegates is clear, presenting himself
26:36 as a fresh and unsullied candidate. Right now there are four of us remaining in the race.
26:45 In terms of age I'm the youngest. I'm 58 years. The vice president is 60.
26:53 Honorable K.Japone is about 63 or 64, one of them. Honorable Uswe Friyakutu is over 70.
27:01 In terms of age I'm the youngest.
27:04 We didn't hear you.
27:12 Joy News' Erastus Asaridonko has been adjudged the GJAPAV and SAJ Journalist of the Year.
27:18 Erastus elaborates documentaries on the devastating effects of illegal mining popularly
27:25 known as GALAMSI. He stood tall among all the entries filed. Joy News and Multimedia Journalists
27:32 won up to eight awards on that night. There's more in this report. The 27th Ghana Journalist
27:40 Association Awards was dedicated to celebrating journalists who produced exceptional reports in
27:45 the year 2022. Joy News' Erastus Asaridonko who was adjudged the GJAPAV and SAJ Journalist of the
27:52 Year shares his excitement. I have with me here the GJA Journalist of the Year from our very own
27:59 office, Erastus Asaridonko. Please tell us how it feels to be awarded this evening. Well it's been a
28:08 long journey. We started way back in 2002. We've gone through thick and thin. I started following
28:19 illegal mining in 2014 and it's been ups and downs and I think Jehovah has glorified his name. He has
28:27 been faithful. So it signifies that hard work pays and the road to success though it can be winding
28:37 if you keep following it you'll get there. Please tell us about the documentary that won you this
28:43 award, Distraction for Gold if I'm correct and what were some of the challenges you went
28:48 through while doing this story? Well so Distraction for Gold is what won us this award and the
28:56 challenges are plenty. In fact we had to challenge ourselves because previously we were following a
29:03 government task force to go and monitor what is happening on the field with regards to illegal
29:08 mining and its devastation. At a point in time we felt that we needed to do an independent job,
29:13 go on the field on our own and engaging the security, meeting people with guns and all that
29:20 in the bushes, it was a daunting task but we needed to do it to break the conscience of government,
29:27 to break the conscience of those who do it and to also tell the public that these are the effects
29:32 of it and we need to fight it together. Chairperson of the electoral commission Mrs. Jean Mayes,
29:37 an edged journalist to be custodians of truth and engage in objective criticisms as the country
29:43 approaches the 2024 elections. I urge you to say the course that these great names are placed
29:49 even as we approach the 2024 election. This is more important than ever.
29:58 For ladies and gentlemen, recent years have raised concerns regarding the role of the media.
30:05 Several media platforms which would have been used as basis for informed public debate
30:12 have been turned into vehicles for propaganda and sometimes sheer force.
30:22 I'm excited to be joined in the studio by the journalist of the year Erastus Osaridongo.
30:29 Congratulations Erastus. Thank you. Very happy for you but of course how do you feel
30:35 being a judge, the winner? It's an honour, a great feeling,
30:43 an added responsibility. I know that it places a lot of expectation on you as well.
30:52 So let's have this conversation. Let me take a break
30:55 on Joy News today. When I return that conversation awaits you. Stay with me.
30:59 Welcome back. Apologies for the break and that interesting conversation with the journalist of
31:10 the year Erastus. You were telling me about the feeling of being journalist of the year.
31:16 It's an exciting feeling you have and it's an honour to be in front of such dignitaries and the
31:26 whole world watching you be crowned journalist of the year. It places a lot of responsibility
31:33 on my shoulders as well that more is expected and so we need to continue what we're doing and even
31:39 do more. Yeah and of course a lot of hard work has gone into this. I've been monitoring all the work
31:46 you've been doing on Galamzee. Let's talk about this, what do you call it, the passion and how
31:54 sensitive the issue of Galamzee is. In fact with my current documentary which will, part two of
32:01 which we show in the evening, Poison for Gold, we came face to face with the reality, the dangers
32:09 involved in it and we're surprised to learn that it has been happening quietly on the ground for a
32:16 very long time that many of us did not even realise that we're surrounded by the extreme
32:22 dangers of illegal mining and so I think it's an eye-opener to come up with this one to notify
32:29 people, educate people that this is what is happening. We are even thinking that with a
32:35 blessing of management and support from our partners, translate this into the local language,
32:41 go on a road trip and educate communities directly affected by mining so that together we can fight
32:50 this. Definitely there's more waiting for us. I know that in doing all of this you yourself,
32:56 you've not been spared the threats, the attacks but of course you've defied all odds. What's next
33:02 for the journalists of the year? So Poison for Gold is still showing, part two will show this
33:09 evening, part three will come next week. After that we have the Forest Under Siege series. We're
33:16 going to show Forest Under Siege, Tano Nimre and then we'll go to Forest Under Siege, Etowah
33:23 Forest and so when we are done with that we'll continue working for Ghana. Definitely, to whom
33:29 much is given much is expected right and we expect nothing but the best from Erasos. Congratulations
33:36 once again for being the journalist of the year. Let's now talk about the National Science and
33:42 Maths Quiz. Three schools, nine contestants, two proud regions. It is only a few hours to that
33:49 climax of this year's National Science and Maths Quiz as undisputed champions, Reseke, Ligon,
33:56 square up with Opokuwari School and Achimota School but many are asking whether it will be a repeat
34:02 or a revenge. Reseke, Ligon have in the past toppled the two schools to clinch the ultimate
34:09 prize at the grand finale while Achimoto School is seeking to end the reign of their city rivals.
34:14 Opokuwari is yet to figure out how to recreate their re-seconds after they miss the trophy. So
34:22 the Odadiers in four final clashes. Emmanuel Bright-Kweku brings us a wrap of the journey of
34:28 the three schools. After a long and nail-biting journey from the regional qualifications to the
34:43 national tournament, three schools are set to battle it out for the coveted trophy. Two-time
34:48 champions Achimoto School and Opokuwari School face off seven-time champions Presbyterian Boys
34:54 Secondary School. Their journeys to the grand finale has been arduous.
34:58 Coming all the way from the regional qualification to the grand finale, Achimoto School
35:09 showcased their mettle at every stage of the competition. The school last qualified to the
35:14 finals in 2009 but lost the trophy to Presek, Ligon. But with unbroken determination, the Achimoto's
35:21 left no stone unturned.
35:23 After the contest, Achimoto School is going to be in prison because we are going to murder Presek and Owas.
35:28 They are going to murder Presek and Owas. Simple.
35:32 We are leaving the contest to a test killer. No matter what, we will win.
35:35 No matter what, you will win. You don't see any threat ahead of you.
35:38 We don't see anybody. We are coming. We are coming to take the force. You see the energy.
35:42 The energy.
35:48 It's been 21 years since they last lifted the trophy. Opokuwari School, after missing the
35:53 trophy in 2020, landed their ninth final appearance after ousting their all-time
35:59 foe, Pemper College and Pope John SCHL's minor seminary. Their catechists are hungry
36:04 and ready to devour any school to clinch their third trophy.
36:08 My voice are prepared. I know that we are going to murder all of them. We are going to kill them.
36:13 We are going to kill them.
36:14 We don't love Presek. We will win Presek.
36:17 Opokuwari School, Opokuwari School, 2023, we are winning. We are winning. Who is Presek?
36:22 Achimata. You take their trophy from their hometown and bring it to Asante Regency.
36:26 Fantastic.
36:26 Form 1 and he's already lost in the form 2. He's also stayed in it for three years.
36:31 We are just trying to say that one year in Opokuwari School is worth more than three years in
36:35 Pemper and Presek and KU. Yes.
36:38 We want to tell them that there is a Latin phrase which states, "Cum dagrafa, dagrafa."
36:45 So what is written? What is written?
36:47 It is written that we are bringing the trophy to Asante. It's between two schools.
36:52 I want to tell them that Achimata and Presek, they will be better. They will become second.
36:56 Presek and Achimata, they will be heroes.
36:59 With their mantra, our living God is faithful and great.
37:13 Seven-time champions Presek Legon is anticipating their eighth trophy.
37:17 The school, since their painful exit in 2018, has proven to be an invincible force,
37:22 securing their seat at the grand finale for five consecutive years.
37:26 The defending champions began their journey at the 1H stage, eliminating Konungu Odumasi
37:31 and Kumasi Wesley-Gales. Proceeding to the quarter-final stage, the school met their
37:36 all-time city rivals, Accra Academy and Ghana Secondary Technical School, in a fierce strive
37:42 to yet again repeat history. The boys withstood the heat from the Kwabucho boys to topple them
37:47 and qualified to the grand finale. The Audabians are optimistic of a back-to-back win.
37:52 I trust in the Pate Dote and Selina because this contest is something easy. We can do it.
37:57 It's easy, brah.
37:59 Yeah, we can do it because it's one-sided. It's every day Presek,
38:03 Presek, Presek, and the schools we are meeting, I don't see them to be competitive.
38:07 So we can win.
38:09 At Chemotha and Opokuwari, we are going back to do our homework. We are going back to work hard
38:14 because it's not over. We are taking the 8th trophy. 8th is written and we believe in a
38:18 great God and we know that our God is faithful and so we are taking the 8th trophy.
38:23 But time can only tell if victory, the trinity, or a great God will be the winning mantra for
38:31 the year. For JO News, my name is Emmanuel Bright-Kwikor.
38:34 [Chanting]
38:39 So who wears the crown? 1pm, let's decide. Take a break and when we return, there's business.
38:47 Welcome to Business. My name is Darrell Kwao,
38:54 Member of Parliament for North Tonga constituents in the Voto Region, Samuel Okujeto-Ablakwa,
38:59 has lauded Unilever Ghana PLC for showing care to the victims of the flood caused by
39:03 the Akosumbudam spillage. He says the company has been with the people through thick and thin
39:08 over the years and has been compassionate during the flood disaster. Mr Ablakwa disclosed this to
39:14 Joy Business when Unilever Ghana PLC donated a truck of relief items to the victims. Kwame Anka
39:19 has more. North Tonga District is considered the worst hit district following the spillage
39:26 of the Akosumbudam. 69 communities in the district have been affected by the flood,
39:32 displacing over 12,000 people, with a third currently being held at a number of safe havens
39:39 in the area, including Mephe St Kizito Senior High Technical School. Beyond the efforts of
39:46 government, corporate bodies, organisations and individuals are lending a helping hand
39:52 to ensure life continues for the people in distress. In line with this, Unilever Ghana
39:58 PLC has donated relief items including soups, water tanks, water purifiers, an Apuna salt,
40:06 Pepsodent and close-up toothpaste, branded T-shirts, among other items to the victims.
40:13 Receiving the truckload of items, Member of Parliament for North Tonga constituency,
40:19 Samuel Okudetu Ablakwa, together with other officials, thanked Unilever Ghana PLC for their
40:26 support. "Really massive, I mean a whole truckload of assorted items of water and this has been the
40:32 most you know impressive packaging of water that will go a long way to help our people. You know
40:39 water is cut and it's been really difficult to have access to portable water. The river levels
40:46 rose so high and entered into all kinds of areas that are unwholesome. So the river water which
40:55 our people use to cook, to drink, to bathe, wash and all of that is no longer safe, it's no longer
41:03 wholesome and so this will really go a long way to keep our people healthy and keep them alive.
41:11 So on behalf of the entire district, on behalf of the chiefs, on behalf of DCE, on behalf of NADMO,
41:20 on behalf of the coordinated response team, we say a big thank you to Unilever. We will always
41:27 remember you. We are grateful. God richly bless you. Communications and Sustainability Manager
41:33 of Unilever Ghana PLC, Henry Moum says the donation is towards the general well-being,
41:40 health, hygiene and confidence of the victims. At this time when people are burdened by damage
41:46 that has been caused by the spillage, people have lost livelihoods, nowhere to sleep and all that
41:52 and this is a time when disease can easily break out. So for us it's important to make
41:57 an intervention and this is what we can give at the moment. The National Insurance Commission
42:03 has indicated its commitment to improving the coverage of insurance through the development of
42:08 InsurTech products through its Inulap InsurTech Accelerator Program. The move which is a
42:14 collaboration with FSD Africa and GIZ Ghana will see the development of digital insurance products
42:20 aimed at ensuring inclusive insurance through the creation of digital labs and sandboxes.
42:26 Here's more in this report. The Inulap InsurTech Accelerator Program is a collaboration with the
42:32 National Insurance Commission, FSD Africa and GIZ Ghana to create a robust InsurTech sector in
42:39 Ghana. The collaboration will see the development of digital innovations in the insurance service
42:45 delivery through sandboxing and digital labs which will allow indigenous tech startups to showcase
42:51 their innovations. Acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission Michael Andor
42:57 describes the aim of the project. We agreed to do what we call the Inulap. This is a lab,
43:05 you know, is a lab basically to bring ideas together, people who have ideas, take them
43:15 through some process, help them to refine their ideas. We mentioned a sandbox, sandbox, but if you
43:22 read the insurance act you will not find any sandbox in it. What you define is this innovative
43:29 insurance license, but it is a sandbox system. A sandbox is where you test, is an area, a restricted
43:36 area where you test something and see whether it will work before you take it to the market. And so
43:44 that is exactly the opportunity that Inulap gave us. On building capacity of insurance players
43:51 and regulation, this is what Michael Andor had to say. The other thing we get from the Inulap
43:58 is the capacity building. You know, tech and innovation keeps developing and as we are
44:06 embracing innovation we are getting, we are calling for things that we don't know much about.
44:14 And so it is important that we as regulators get to build capacity, build the capacity of our staff
44:22 so that as they develop these things we will be thinking about what is the best way of regulating
44:28 these. You see the regulation in the digital world tends to be different from the paper
44:38 regulation. You need to think through what could go wrong and have some mechanisms around it to
44:46 mitigate it. Principal Innovation and Resilience at FSD Africa Elias Omondi stated that the move
44:53 will improve the rate of inclusivity in the insurance sector. We came up with a proposal
45:01 which was humbly accepted by the National Insurance Commission here to look at avenues in
45:06 which we could encourage innovators to develop solutions that would basically at the end of the
45:12 day improve inclusion. With that then we started a program and this particular program was called
45:17 Inulap InsureTech Accelerator, a program that looks into ways in which you invite innovators
45:24 within an ecosystem to develop solutions at the same time come up with avenues that they can
45:30 really create strategic partners to drive the growth of insurance in Ghana.
45:35 And that's it for this segment, Sports is Up Next.
45:40 [Music]
45:44 It's time now to bring you sports on. Joining us today with me Muftao Nabila Abla. MediaMass
45:49 quest to have the group stages of the CAF Champions League matches played at the Cape Coast
45:54 Sports Stadium has hit a block following CAF's decision to deny them the opportunity of playing
46:00 their matches at the venue. The Confederation of African Football in a statement to the Ghana
46:05 Football Association said that the venue does not meet the requirements put out by CAF to be able to
46:12 host CAF category A matches. The group stages of the CAF Champions League is meant to host some of
46:20 the topmost games under the umbrella of the continent's football governing body and CAF also
46:27 said that the venue should be closed down for renovation work to meet the modern standards
46:33 of venues required to host its competitions. We move on and do some boxing where former
46:39 world champion Isaac Dubey has been told his opportunity to win a world title again
46:44 will not happen following the decision of the boxer to move up in weight from the
46:49 super bantamweight division to the featherweight division. According to his former technical
46:54 advisor Yofi Boham, Isaac Dubey's height is a disadvantage when it comes to fighting
46:59 at a featherweight level. With my experience it's a no-go area for him. I don't think.
47:09 Take his height into consideration. But you saw the height and you still came in to advise him.
47:15 Oh as a super, as up to the super bantamweight level, up to the super bantamweight class,
47:26 he can still feature. But he has now jumped to featherweight. Featherweight, the experience that
47:33 we have from with Azuma's participation, we come across a lot of featherweights.
47:39 A lot of featherweights and Isaac Dubey did not match them at all. Talk of DK Poison,
47:46 who calls me commander. DK Poison, yes. He featured as a featherweight all along.
47:55 Trying, going in then for lightweight. In his time there were no supers and all that.
48:00 And it was difficult. So would you advise Isaac to drop back to... And can he drop?
48:06 That's a challenge too. That's a challenge. Yes. A massive challenge. That's right. So I've been a
48:13 technical person. I tell you that's the end of the road for him when talking about world championship.
48:24 That's your sports for now. We do have more sports stories on myjoyonline.com. And also just a quick
48:29 announcement, Sports Zone on Joy Prime, which as every Monday has been extended by one hour,
48:34 30 minutes. So it's now going to be ending at 10.30 p.m. every Monday. And the National Science
48:41 and Maths Quiz Grand Finale is happening. My colleague Musbah will be here at 1 p.m. to build
48:46 you up to the grand finale of the competition. Aisha, standing by, the rest of the news.
48:52 Welcome back to join us today to the rest of our stories and I do praise
49:01 strict patrons over the weekend here at ESET.
49:06 [Music]
49:13 The experience is so massive and I'm so happy. I'm very happy to have an encounter with a lot of
49:34 people. And as you can see my voice is already going because the joy, the joy. I can't even
49:41 express myself because I've experienced it for grace and I can't wait to see PSJA, ESTA,
49:47 Kofi Pipra and the rest. I'm so overwhelmed and I've even gotten strength because the word says
49:52 that the joy of the Lord is our strength and I've been overwhelmed. I don't even know what to say.
49:58 God richly bless everybody who contributed to the program. I think this thing should continue
50:06 and it's going to open doors for a lot of people. And I'm saying that may the almighty God show His
50:12 blessing upon everybody who's spending inside this program. I came all the way from Kosovo just
50:18 to experience. I don't praise. So everything is good. The ministers, they are on point. Everything
50:25 is on point. Team Eternity, yeah. Because the performance was smart. Everything is on point.
50:31 So I think team Eternity is good. I'll say God bless you all because it's not easy to organize
50:35 such a big program. So God bless you all. I'm very, very, very fulfilled and excited. I really got what
50:42 I wanted. As of now I'm satisfied and I know I'm not going empty-handed. Whatever words are in the
50:49 song and whatever movements I did, God has appreciated it. And I know what sort of blessing I deserve.
50:56 Me and my generation. And as I wrap up the bulletin and as I leave you, I leave you with
51:04 the build-up to the National Science and Maths quiz. All the guys are ready to bring you the build-up.
51:11 Maxwell Agbagba, Jacqueline Ansumayya, Boa Musbao, they're all there to bring you the update. Stay on
51:17 the JOY News channel for the rest of the National Science and Maths quiz. Enjoy the rest of our program.
