00:00 I just saw Russell right up there by the waterfall and I think we've got Douglas is right over there. So we've got company
00:06 One of the things we're gonna work on today are the pond plants
00:11 I'm gonna do that last because I'm gonna actually get in the pond because I want to
00:15 Groom off some of these spent leaves on this great big lily and this lily has grown. Oh my goodness
00:22 It has grown so we're gonna fertilize that as well. I'd also like to just go around to each pond plant
00:27 I don't even know the name of all of these yet, but I want to groom off anything
00:31 That needs to be groomed and just kind of tidy them up a little bit all the plants on the outside are
00:36 Doing phenomenally well, we haven't lost any even though we planted on such a hot day
00:42 Oh, it was so hot that they all look really happy and that brings me to our other project
00:47 Which is planting a few of these plumbago. My mom and I had a chance to get out of town yesterday
00:52 we went to a garden center and
00:54 I found these which is one of the plants I was looking for for this space
00:57 This is an amazing ground cover you guys. I don't even know the botanical Sarah toast stigma Sarah to stigma
01:04 But what these do is they grow about a foot tall?
01:07 They'll spread out a couple of feet now in some areas they do spread by rhizome and sometimes they can spread quickly
01:12 They don't in our area just because I think they lack the moisture to do so
01:16 but they bloom these really beautiful blue blooms from early summer all throughout the summer into fall and
01:24 Then all of these leaves turn the brightest red
01:27 For the fall months. It's just such a beautiful beautiful ground cover and for us
01:32 It's easy to tame and easy to take care of and I kind of thought I would like to
01:36 Tuck some of these around I've got 11
01:40 I've got four four inchers and then seven gallon size
01:43 And I thought it would be fun to tuck them in kind of in I don't know
01:48 I haven't even thought about the exact placement, but we'll figure it out
01:51 But I'm trying to pick out plants that have just more of a natural vibe for this area nothing too formal the pavers for this whole
01:57 Area you know the walkways and then the patio right here in front of the pond those arrived a couple of days ago
02:02 And I think the project will start next Monday
02:06 So just in a few days
02:07 And we'll try to capture that process when all of those go in and the one last thing I want to work on for this
02:12 Area is sitting right over there
02:13 We ordered a couple of chairs for the patio area, and I'm so excited to get those unboxed
02:18 But I think before it gets too hot we should do the planting project first, so here's what we're looking at aren't
02:23 They just so pretty I just think they're the most beautiful ground cover
02:26 I've got shovels
02:28 I don't want to use the auger because I don't want to make too much of a mess in this area
02:32 And then we've got our biotone starter fertilizer, so let's get these done
02:37 (water flowing)
02:39 (water flowing)
02:41 (water flowing)
02:43 (water flowing)
02:45 (water flowing)
02:47 (water flowing)
02:49 (rain falling)
02:51 (rain falling)
02:54 (rain falling)
02:56 (rain falling)
02:59 (rain falling)
03:01 (rain falling)
03:04 (rain falling)
03:15 (rain falling)
03:19 (rain falling)
03:24 (rain falling)
03:30 (rain falling)
03:33 Those look so good.
03:43 I cannot wait to see them fill in.
03:46 So six of them on this side near the miscanthus grass,
03:49 which will get quite large, like four to five feet tall,
03:52 and it will fill in this area really nicely.
03:55 And I just want them all to kind of marry together,
03:58 and then I want the plumbego to kind of go
04:00 over the edges of the rocks just a little bit,
04:01 just to soften those.
04:03 And then we've got a Joe's Best bristlecone pine,
04:06 which is probably one of my more favorite evergreens
04:08 in this whole area.
04:09 And that one only grows six feet tall by four feet wide.
04:12 And I really want that to be kind of
04:14 the showpiece plant right here.
04:16 And then on this side, there are four around the rocks
04:19 by the Angel Falls Eastern White Pine, which I really love.
04:24 I think this whole little section
04:25 is turning out beautifully.
04:27 We've got the blackhawks grass right here,
04:30 and then I just tucked one right up by this rock.
04:33 I would love for this to kind of
04:34 become Plumbego Alley though.
04:36 So I'm gonna be keeping my eyes open
04:37 for a few more of those just throughout the years.
04:40 But I think kind of just letting them fill in this area,
04:43 it would be so beautiful just to have that low leafy growth.
04:47 Then of course the blue blooms and the bright fall color,
04:50 I think that would look really nice.
04:52 So we will run individual emitters off of the drip system
04:55 for each one of these plants,
04:56 and that's how we are running the drip in this entire area.
04:59 So everything has targeted watering.
05:01 We're not watering areas that don't have anything in them.
05:05 So far so good.
05:06 I mean, given the fact that these plants have had to endure,
05:08 first of all, being planted when it was over 100 degrees,
05:11 and then a lot of heat right afterward,
05:13 and they are in the full afternoon sun.
05:15 So, and really it's early in the morning.
05:17 I don't think it's even eight yet, or just after eight.
05:21 And this area is starting to get in the sun already.
05:23 So like these will be in the sun all day long.
05:25 But my favorite part is just seeing all of the little views
05:29 that this pond affords.
05:31 Like there's just so many gorgeous little vignettes.
05:34 And then, I mean, of course the thing as a whole
05:36 is just phenomenal.
05:38 Oh, there's a dragonfly.
05:39 Okay, now that the planting is done,
05:41 which I'm so happy we got after it early in the day
05:43 before it got really hot,
05:44 I'm gonna water these plants in with the hose.
05:46 I will run the drip to them later on today,
05:48 but I wanna get those chairs unboxed.
05:50 And you probably noticed,
05:51 I already have a chair sitting here.
05:52 This Adirondack chair just off of Amazon.
05:54 It was really inexpensive.
05:56 Just to see if I liked the style right here.
05:58 And I just love it.
05:59 I think it's beautiful.
06:01 Super like rickety.
06:03 So I knew that that's probably what I was in for
06:06 based on the price,
06:07 but it really did help me decide
06:09 what I wanted to do in this area
06:11 before we invested in the good ones.
06:14 And I will do that a lot of the time, like even in plants.
06:17 Remember one time I planted the whole west side
06:18 in a moon garden, all white blooms,
06:21 and I ended up really not liking it in that spot.
06:24 I love moon gardens,
06:25 but I feel like that was more of a sunny area at the time.
06:28 It would probably work better now,
06:29 now that we have more shade.
06:31 But I think moon gardens just work better for shade
06:34 because white tends to look kind of dry in the full sun,
06:36 and I just really didn't like it.
06:37 But I was so happy that we went with annuals in that area
06:41 instead of investing in all the shrubs and perennials
06:43 and all of those things that bloom white,
06:45 and then ended up not liking them
06:46 and having to move them all over the place.
06:48 So anyway, that's kind of my approach.
06:50 So we ordered a couple of Adirondack chairs
06:52 from Country Casualteque.
06:53 We started with two just because we wanted to see
06:56 how they fit the space,
06:57 because we might go with two more the same size for the kids
07:01 or two, they actually have a kid's size,
07:03 which would be really fun.
07:04 So we wanted just to see how these fit first,
07:07 but I am excited.
07:08 You know, we recently put those benches
07:10 from this company out in the cut flower garden,
07:12 and I love them.
07:13 I think they're so pretty,
07:14 and you can probably see the ones
07:15 behind the Hartley right now.
07:15 There are four.
07:17 Anyway, let's get this opened up.
07:20 (box clattering)
07:22 Oh, and there's the tables, I forgot.
07:26 Yay, we got the table.
07:27 You guys, one of my favorite things about this place
07:29 is that you can order these pre-assembled,
07:32 which is amazing.
07:34 I used to like to assemble things,
07:36 like take the time to do it.
07:37 Now, I just don't.
07:39 It's not a thing that I enjoy to do.
07:41 So to be able to order these pre-assembled
07:43 has been kind of a game changer for me.
07:45 I wish everybody did that.
07:48 (box clattering)
07:50 Oh, so much better.
08:09 So much better than that other one.
08:11 (box clattering)
08:13 (water splashing)
08:16 (box clattering)
08:19 (water splashing)
08:34 (box clattering)
09:03 Oh my goodness, those are perfect for this space.
09:06 I love it.
09:08 Space-wise, I think two kid-size Adirondacks
09:11 might be in order so that it doesn't get too much
09:14 in this space.
09:15 But you know, the thing about it is that the kids
09:18 and myself, most of the time,
09:19 don't really wanna be sitting in a chair.
09:20 We want to be sitting on, I use that stump.
09:23 I sit on that stump a lot.
09:25 I sit on this rock a lot.
09:27 The kids sit right here and put their feet in.
09:29 We sit over here a lot.
09:30 There's a lot of chairs that aren't actual chairs
09:33 in this space.
09:35 So it's just gonna be something we'll have to see
09:37 how we use it and how we live with it, you know,
09:40 to see what will be necessary.
09:42 But for now, oh, those are so pretty.
09:44 I need to go locate my pond plant fertilizer
09:47 and I wore pants that are already dirty
09:48 so I could just get in pants and all.
09:50 We're just gonna get in there and get it done.
09:52 Okay, I've got my supplies here.
09:54 I've got this tub for the debris
09:56 that I cut off with my snips.
09:58 And then these are the plant fertilizer tabs.
10:00 The pond tabs.
10:01 So you're supposed to use one of these
10:03 per every gallon of soil per month
10:06 during the growing season.
10:07 And you push it in to the soil one finger length.
10:10 So the length of your finger,
10:11 and then you kind of like tamp the soil in around it.
10:14 And you want to do it about three inches away
10:15 from the crown of the plant.
10:17 So for some of these, like, I want to say that lily is in,
10:22 I'm gonna maybe use like three of these.
10:24 I can't remember exactly the size of the pot though.
10:26 So I'm gonna have to get in there
10:26 and kind of feel it and guess.
10:29 And then we've got another hardy lily
10:30 that's kind of behind it, but I don't even see it
10:32 because they're kind of small.
10:33 They were bare root.
10:34 But this one, it's pushing a new leaf
10:37 and it's got pink variegation.
10:39 It's so pretty.
10:40 So what I'll do with those is probably just put in one tab
10:43 per plant there.
10:44 And then some of these, they're not even in soil.
10:46 They're just kind of like in the rocks.
10:47 So I don't know.
10:48 We're just gonna have to see how this goes.
10:50 But this one is just a stunner.
10:52 And my pants needed a good cleaning anyway.
10:53 So here we go.
10:55 (upbeat music)
10:58 (upbeat music)
11:00 (upbeat music)
11:03 (upbeat music)
11:05 (upbeat music)
11:10 (upbeat music)
11:17 (upbeat music)
11:26 (upbeat music)
11:31 (upbeat music)
11:33 (upbeat music)
11:44 (upbeat music)
11:57 (upbeat music)
11:59 (upbeat music)
12:10 (upbeat music)
12:21 (upbeat music)
12:24 All right, all done.
12:30 It actually felt really good to be in there.
12:33 That water is a perfect temperature.
12:35 This is my bucket of debris.
12:37 So there wasn't too much in there,
12:39 but boy, it makes a huge difference.
12:41 Also, how are you liking those chairs?
12:44 - They're nice.
12:44 - Aren't they nice?
12:46 - They're, I don't feel like I'm gonna break these.
12:48 - Right, well, I felt like I was gonna break that other one.
12:51 I mean, it was rickety.
12:53 - Yeah.
12:54 - Yeah.
12:54 - And it just didn't feel.
12:55 - No, that's what you get though.
12:57 But you know what?
12:58 - The old adage, you totally get what you pay for.
13:00 - You do.
13:01 But it did direct us toward these beautiful chairs
13:04 and knowing that we liked that style.
13:06 And I think these are so pretty.
13:08 I like the table too.
13:09 I forgot you'd ordered that as well.
13:10 - It was actually perfect because Nature's Waterscapes
13:13 is who brought these plants up.
13:15 Most of these plants,
13:15 Greg did bring some of the bare root lilies.
13:19 But like Jenny from Nature's Waterscapes
13:21 brought the huge lily in here and she posted a reel.
13:23 It was yesterday or the day before.
13:25 Just talking about how often they fertilize their lilies.
13:27 And I was like, oh my goodness, what a great reminder.
13:30 I'm so glad she posted that
13:31 because that reminded me to get in here
13:33 and get the job done.
13:34 - So.
13:35 - It's a lot of shade.
13:35 - It really does.
13:36 Don't you think that's like what, doubled?
13:38 - Yeah.
13:39 - At least?
13:40 - Yeah.
13:41 - I mean.
13:42 - How big will it get?
13:43 - Well, they said if this was in its native,
13:45 it's a tropical.
13:46 If it was in its native, it would fill this entire pond.
13:48 - Wow.
13:49 - Yeah.
13:50 But that's the only one because it's not hardy.
13:52 We'll have to pop this one out
13:53 and try to winter it over in the greenhouse.
13:55 But Jenny said she would give me some tips on that.
13:57 So hopefully we do a good job at that.
14:00 And, pavers, right?
14:01 Monday?
14:02 - Yeah.
14:02 - Pedro and his guys will be here.
14:03 - Yep.
14:04 - They're gonna do a pathway leading out,
14:06 the patio right here,
14:07 and then the pathway leading this way.
14:09 And you guys, that is gonna do it for today's project.
14:12 It's still gonna, I don't know if I mentioned,
14:14 probably did because the heat is a big deal right now,
14:16 but it's supposed to be like 104 or 105 today.
14:19 So getting out here early, getting this done,
14:21 being in the water was just glorious.
14:23 We need to figure out more pond projects to do
14:26 where I get to be in it.
14:28 Yes, we should start every day that way.
14:29 Anyway, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
14:31 I hope you enjoyed it.
14:32 Hope you're having a great day
14:34 and we will see you in the next one.
