00:09 Category 5 hurricane on Wednesday, unleashing massive flooding in the resort city of Acapulco.
00:17 Mexican soldiers and rescue workers on Thursday scrambled to clear up the chaos and devastation
00:21 wrought by Hurricane Otis in Acapulco as the government worked to bring relief to the battered
00:26 southern beach resort. Otis slammed into Acapulco in the state of Guerrero as one of the strongest
00:33 hurricanes to ever hit Mexico's Pacific coast, flooding streets, ripping roofs of houses
00:38 and hotels, and severing communications, road and air access. The number remains unclear.
00:44 Downed phone service and electricity lines have made it hard for officials to assess
00:48 the extent of damage, with no immediate reports of fatalities as of Wednesday evening. Nearly
00:53 8,400 members of Mexico's Army, Air Force and National Guard were deployed in and near
00:58 Acapulco to assist in cleanup efforts, the defense ministry said. Mexico's state power
01:03 utility CFE had over 1,300 employees working to restore power, it said on Wednesday evening,
01:09 when some 300,000 people remained without electricity. The port city's international
01:14 airport was closed after Otis wrecked the control tower, cut telecommunications and
01:19 left access roads blocked. On Tuesday, Otis took many by surprise when it rapidly strengthened
01:25 from a tropical storm to a powerful category 5 as it tore along the coast. Researchers
01:30 tracking the storm said that the storm broke records for how quickly it intensified at
01:35 a time when climate change has exacerbated devastating weather events like this one.
01:39 Acapulco, Tecpan and other towns along the coast grant in Guerrero were hit hard, said
01:45 Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. He said conditions were so bad that communication
01:51 with the area had been completely lost. Lopez Obrador noted that Otis was a stronger hurricane
01:58 than Pauline, which hit Acapulco in 1997, destroying swathes of the city and killing
02:03 more than 300 people.
