Moto G Stylus 5G Review | Tom's Guide

  • last year
The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2023 looks to improve on the original Moto G Stylus 5G 2022, but with a newer chipset, improved stylus latency and a 120Hz display refresh rate.

The 6.8-inch FHD+ screen, 256GB of storage and 5,000 mAh battery capacity also make the Moto G Stylus 5G's specs sound strong.

00:00 I'm here with the brand new Moto G Stylus 5G for 2023.
00:06 It's promising a stylus experience paired with 5G performance.
00:10 Let's go take a closer look.
00:16 Stylus smartphones are apparently still alive and well, which is why Motorola has updated
00:20 the Moto G Stylus 5G.
00:23 It's not quite a premium phone, but instead offers an accessible combination of a stylus
00:27 experience for users who also want to benefit from 5G data speeds.
00:31 The device comes in this beautiful rose champagne color that I'm really drawn to, but there's
00:35 also cosmic black if you're looking for something more simple.
00:39 The rear chassis now features a matte finish, which makes it less of a fingerprint magnet
00:43 than the previous gen model.
00:44 I also like how this device transitioned to flat edges.
00:47 It just makes for a better hand feel.
00:50 Putting it on the display, this is a 6.6 inch full HD screen with a 120 hertz refresh rate.
00:56 So that means smooth scrolling either with a finger or with the included stylus.
01:00 The stylus pops out of the bottom and launches a quick menu of favorite apps.
01:05 The note taking app is obviously front and center.
01:07 I had no trouble whatsoever jotting down a quick to-do list.
01:11 I found the latency to be fair, but I would also want to look at it against something
01:14 like the S Pen for the Galaxy Fold to see the difference between a value tier stylus
01:18 phone and a premium tier one.
01:21 Similarly, we need to look at the photo performance a bit closer.
01:25 Here, there's a 50 megapixel main sensor with a combination 8 gigabyte ultra wide and
01:30 macro vision lens, plus a 16 megapixel selfie lens.
01:34 The selfies were a bit lackluster, but the other pics and videos I took looked good at
01:38 a glance.
01:39 If I were to take this phone out and about, the 5000 milliampere battery should get me
01:49 two days of battery life.
01:51 We need to put the Moto G Stylus 5G through our continuous web surfing battery test to
01:55 see how true that is, but Motorola phones do typically offer strong stamina.
02:00 The Moto G Stylus 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and comes with Android 13.
02:07 It will be updated to Android 14, but that's it in terms of OS upgrades.
02:11 Users will still get three years of security upgrades though.
02:14 Otherwise, the device comes with up to 256 gigabytes of storage and is expandable with
02:19 a micro SD up to 2 terabytes.
02:23 Starting at $399, the Moto G Stylus 5G could strike the ultimate balance of features and
02:29 value.
02:30 Of course, there's only one way to find out, and that's by testing this phone in the lab.
02:34 In the meantime, you can check out what we're doing on social, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
02:38 and TikTok @tomsguide.
02:39 And as always, I'm @kaykocic.
02:41 Thanks for watching.
02:42 I'll catch you next time.
