00:00 October is a month where thousands across Kent look to celebrate Black History Month.
00:06 But for those at the University of Kent, they say more needs to be done beyond this month
00:12 to raise awareness.
00:14 And this week, they hosted a special brunch in honour of the Awareness Month, where many
00:21 shared their own thoughts on this.
00:23 I think it's an ongoing battle.
00:26 I think we can do more.
00:28 There's always room for more, yeah.
00:29 So I think there's much more to be done.
00:31 We can always encourage more events, host more events like this, and hold more student
00:38 markets for black students and things like that, which is good things that the union
00:42 are currently doing, but we can always push and strive for more.
00:45 And not just during the month of October, like throughout the year, keep it an ongoing
00:49 thing.
00:50 So it's not just October, it's like, oh, here are all the events, just like throughout the
00:53 year as well.
00:54 Yeah.
00:55 With the help of the African Caribbean Society, they've added some tasty Caribbean classics
01:02 to the campus restaurant Woody's, and a live DJ set the atmosphere perfectly.
01:08 However, the organisers believe more can be done beyond October to allow students to feel
01:15 more inclusive.
01:17 I think it's good to have a sense of belonging somewhere.
01:19 Everyone likes to feel like they fit in somewhere, and especially in Kent, it's like a predominantly
01:24 white area, especially.
01:25 So if someone came from somewhere that's predominantly black, they might have had a culture shock
01:29 once they got here.
01:30 So it's good to be able to find people that you'd be able to relate certain things to
01:33 that you wouldn't be able to do elsewhere.
01:36 But those that came today definitely felt the vibe.
01:39 We do a lot of events tailored towards not necessarily the black community, but obviously
01:44 community in general.
01:45 And yeah, this cause has a quite significant place in our hearts.
01:48 I think today's events are really good.
01:51 Like really good vibes in here.
01:53 Good music, things like that.
01:54 It's a nice place to sit with friends and things.
01:57 I even got to try the cuisine myself.
02:00 I'm going to try some of Woody's jerk chicken, exclusive to this Black History Month event.
02:08 International students are eagerly awaiting what the university will do to give their
02:14 culture more chances to shine.
