00:00 or two. We've got some general maintenance in terms of pruning, cutting
00:04 back, but there are also a few plants that I want to dig out that I don't like
00:07 in this space anymore. We need to repot the window box, things like that. Because
00:12 this area has kind of grown out of control, oh my goodness. So you know the
00:17 other day we were out here we planted this Norway spruce which I absolutely
00:20 love seeing that there. Nothing I really need to do in that space. But moving this
00:24 direction we did not have time that day to repot the window box and it did
00:29 really well. We've got the geraniums we started from seed, we'll repot those. And
00:32 then we have these super bells. I think that's great punch. They grew really well,
00:37 bloomed really well, but you know they're starting to peter out with the cooler
00:39 temperatures. So I'm ready to have something new in the window box. I'm
00:43 gonna take these day lilies out. These are the going bananas and I do like the
00:48 color of the blooms and things, but I just don't like them right here. And I
00:51 might just pop a few cabbage and kale that I have left over from other
00:54 projects just to fill in the space for now. Okay boys, no fighting. Anyway there's
01:02 some blue sky supertunia which still has a little bit of bloom, but the plants
01:06 look pretty tired. I'll probably pull those. I did plant some dahlias in here.
01:10 These are supposed to be pink and they're burgundy. They're real pretty. So
01:14 we'll leave those, but I need to train this rose because oh my word look at it
01:18 that's a zephyrine druon. I need to do some pruning and some training around
01:22 the window. I love the growth this year though. I mean that's awesome. Look at
01:25 that. Oh we're gonna have some beautiful pink blooms up over the window next year.
01:29 And then we've got some roses I just need to cut back. Some wild arms growing
01:33 there. This is the supertunia vista ultramarine. Did beautifully. I think I'm
01:39 gonna leave those for now just because they still have some color. They look
01:43 pretty. And this is the other dahlia I planted and this is the color I thought
01:48 I planted in the other space too. Isn't that beautiful? There's the girls. Hi girls. And
01:54 then right here we've got some lemon coral sedums still looking nice. I don't
01:58 think I'm gonna worry about doing too much raking because these trees are just
02:01 dropping like crazy right now. But there is quite a bit of rose maintenance I
02:06 need to do in here. This topiary is completely leaning back. What in the
02:12 world? Take a look at that. Going through this way. Might have time to move the
02:18 brunnera. These have lived in full Sun all season. Looking pretty good for full
02:25 Sun. Brunnera typically does better in shade. But look at this rose. It's like a
02:30 huge shrub now. And this area I've just kind of let go because I thought we were
02:34 gonna get to it earlier and didn't. I need to move all the iris because I've
02:37 got a crabapple here. I mean this area is gonna look way different hopefully when
02:41 we get done today. This will be pruned back. Irises will be gone. When they bloom
02:46 they bloom up into the canopy of the crabapple. So it's just really not a good
02:51 location for them anymore. I also really need to move that lambs ear because
02:55 we're gonna be coming in with maybe some larger things because this is now gonna
02:58 be the back of this flowerbed. The hibiscus I'll probably leave today but
03:03 I'm thinking about moving those. I don't really like them here anymore. And look
03:07 at this iris. Like oh my gosh that's almost as tall as me. Coming out of that
03:11 crabapple. It's just a huge jumble. And then we've got some foxglove that we
03:16 planted here. These are a second year bloomer so those will stay put. I
03:21 think those are an apricot variety. We'll get to enjoy the blooms next year. And
03:25 then these are just annuals that will pull the bit the biden's maybe. There's
03:29 still some color though so I hate to pull them yet but most of the plants
03:32 looking tired. We haven't been cold enough for the coleus to be taken yet.
03:36 But anyway that's just kind of a look at what I've got going on in this flower
03:39 bed. We need to move this as well. This is a basket of gold
03:42 alyssum. This whole section is gonna change a little bit minus like the
03:46 crabapple and the maple and the foxglove. Pedro is coming I think next Monday to
03:54 finish some gravel back here. So what he'll do is bring the bricks over so we
03:58 have the swoop and then it'll turn and make the corner so that we don't lose
04:02 the definition of the swoop. Initially we thought about just continuing on and
04:06 going straight with the brick and making all of this gravel but I think that's
04:10 way too wide. So we're gonna come over with the brick and then go that way with
04:14 it to where this looks like kind of a separate section. It'll be all gravel
04:18 right in here so it'll look like a walkway to the bench and then everything
04:21 behind it will be flower bed. And once that's done we'll have a better feel for
04:26 the space plus all the cleaning out that I'll do today will kind of help as well.
04:29 Then we'll decide what direction a pathway will go if we decide to even
04:34 keep a pathway in this area. If we do we will likely swap the pallets out for
04:39 flagstones and do pallets somewhere else. But you guys these pallets, these slats,
04:43 pallet slats are the originals from when we very first put in the pallet walkway
04:49 which has been years ago. I just I remember the comments that we got on the
04:54 pallet walkway. There were so many of you guys who were like this is such a cool
04:58 thing and it was so cheap it was like $75 for the whole pathway and that
05:01 really was just buying the landscape staples or the pins to keep them down.
05:05 Other than that it was just elbow grease getting it done. But there was a lot of
05:10 you know those boards are gonna rot, you're gonna you know attract termites,
05:13 all those kinds of things and none of which happened. It still lives on even
05:17 today and it's such a whimsical look you know. It's probably something that I'll
05:21 want to continue on but it's a little bit more fitting out in the South Garden I
05:24 think at this point. But we'll see. I just want this space to feel like it's sort
05:28 of connected. I don't want it to be formal because we've got enough
05:31 formality but I want it to feel cohesive with what we've got going on on this
05:36 side. So we'll work towards that. One thing I want to show you before we
05:40 start it and that is this Julia Child tree rose. I have to tell you these have
05:47 been the most productive, most beautiful roses. Oh my gosh I mean the most robust
05:55 rose tree I've about ever seen. That one over there gets a ton more Sun. It's
06:01 actually losing its leaves a little bit faster. So they've always been on a
06:05 little bit of a different schedule I think because this one gets a little bit
06:07 more shade. But I just had to come show you because it's just they're so
06:14 beautiful. Okay now let's get started up here. I think what I'm gonna do first is
06:20 go through and prune back all the wild mangy growth. We'll dig out the day
06:24 lilies and get some stuff planted. So we'll kind of do phase one here. We'll
06:27 work through that then I'll stop and give you a tour and then we'll keep
06:30 working our way around. Maybe by the time we get to the back part it'll be in more
06:33 shade this afternoon.

09:24 - Much better, isn't it?
09:35 I mean, you can actually see some of the plants
09:37 that those roses were just hanging over.
09:39 So that's what we started with
09:41 and it does look much better.
09:43 So those are all tacked up there on the chicken coop.
09:46 And this is what I use right here.
09:47 These are just coax staples.
09:49 They have a really small nail.
09:50 And then of course the white plastic matches the coop,
09:52 which is perfect.
09:53 And then some wire.
09:54 So if we get in here close,
09:56 you can see there's one right in there.
09:59 And then I can just use the wire to attach the branch
10:02 wherever I want it to go.
10:03 There's another one.
10:04 And then I did like one here and one here.
10:09 And then hopefully because the Zephyrenes,
10:11 they grow like 20 to 25 feet.
10:13 I'm hoping to get them all the way
10:14 and maybe train some down.
10:16 Oh, that's just so exciting.
10:18 And the dahlia is really nice.
10:20 That's one individual plant right there.
10:22 It does have a stake on it.
10:24 And even though it's not pink,
10:25 like I thought it was gonna be,
10:26 the burgundy is very pretty.
10:28 I had one of the crane kale left,
10:30 which kind of filled in that space.
10:32 I had six, wait, five, no, six.
10:35 There's five here.
10:36 And then I put the six there
10:37 'cause I didn't have enough space for it.
10:39 But the five coral queen kale,
10:42 a few little pansies,
10:43 like I didn't even have enough pansies to fill this up,
10:44 but I just thought, you know what?
10:45 Better use them and get them in the ground and enjoy them
10:48 instead of just letting them sit in the greenhouse.
10:51 I did a little trimming on these roses.
10:53 They had a few canes coming out,
10:55 but they're such a pretty color.
10:57 Love those.
10:59 And then left that.
11:00 The other thing we did was the window box.
11:03 And again, just use leftover plants.
11:05 These are the new look dusty miller
11:07 that I started from seed this spring.
11:09 And I used all the rest of them up by our kitchen.
11:11 And I mean, they're massive.
11:13 They're like this tall, huge leaves.
11:16 These stayed really tidy and compact
11:19 in their little four inch containers in the greenhouse.
11:21 In fact, I'm surprised they did as well as they have
11:24 holding in there 'cause it was so hot in there
11:26 for most of the season.
11:28 And then some orange pansies
11:29 and two creeping chunny, jenny, I think.
11:34 What variety is it?
11:35 I used the other ones up in the pots in the Versailles garden.
11:40 Yeah, here it is.
11:41 Persian chocolate is the variety name.
11:43 That's just a nice little delicate filler with pretty color.
11:45 Love the pink stems on it.
11:47 I decided to leave the day lilies for now
11:49 just because I knew I didn't have enough stuff to fill it.
11:51 And I didn't really want there to be a hole,
11:53 at least not right yet.
11:55 So we'll take care of that later.
11:56 And once I groomed them, they look a lot better.
11:58 So now we can move to the side of the coop right here
12:02 where we're gonna be doing much the same thing.
12:03 You know, training the roses, cutting back perennials.
12:06 And what I'll probably do is work my way around
12:10 digging up perennials that need to move.
12:12 And then we'll do a tour in the end.
12:14 (upbeat music)
12:17 (upbeat music continues)
12:20 (upbeat music continues)
12:24 (upbeat music continues)
12:27 (upbeat music continues)
12:30 (upbeat music continues)
12:34 (upbeat music continues)
12:37 (upbeat music continues)
12:41 (upbeat music continues)
12:44 (upbeat music continues)
12:47 (upbeat music continues)
12:51 (upbeat music continues)
12:54 (upbeat music continues)
12:58 (upbeat music continues)
13:01 (upbeat music continues)
13:05 (upbeat music continues)
13:08 (upbeat music continues)
13:19 (upbeat music continues)
13:23 (upbeat music continues)
13:31 (upbeat music continues)
13:35 (upbeat music continues)
13:38 (upbeat music continues)
14:04 (upbeat music continues)
14:07 (upbeat music continues)
14:20 (upbeat music continues)
14:23 All right guys, so I got as much done
14:39 as I can get done this afternoon on the chicken coop area.
14:42 We are out in the South garden now
14:43 because that's where I planted the basket of gold alyssum.
14:46 The other plants are near the raised bed vegetable garden.
14:49 So we'll head that direction next.
14:51 And then we'll take a look at the whole area
14:53 around the chicken coop.
14:54 I honestly feel like the addition of this plant
14:56 was perfect for this space
14:58 because it's surrounded by plants
15:00 of very different color and texture.
15:02 We have a peony here that blooms a kind of a soft yellow.
15:06 There's an agastache right here
15:07 and then day lilies right here.
15:10 But having that silvery blue foliage out here is so pretty.
15:14 And I don't think,
15:15 I think this one will be blooming before this one will be.
15:18 But even so, I think the two tones of yellow
15:20 that we have here are really pretty.
15:22 Other than that, I mean,
15:23 we've got some bulbs out here that will pop up
15:26 and there is a white lilac back there,
15:28 but that's it for spring interest thus far.
15:31 So it might be nice to add even more of these out here.
15:34 So pretty and that's such a substantial clump.
15:37 That was planted by, I think the previous owners.
15:41 It was here when in the location where it was planted
15:43 until just a little bit ago.
15:45 It was there when we moved in behind the gazebo area.
15:48 And so anyway, it's just one that I've really enjoyed
15:51 throughout the years.
15:52 I've really loved the color of both the leaves
15:54 and the blooms.
15:55 So now let's run to the raised bed garden.
15:57 That's where the brunnera ended up.
15:59 Here we are and here are the brunnera.
16:02 I think this variety, if I can remember correctly,
16:04 is silver heart maybe.
16:06 I planted this along the pallet walkway
16:09 before we removed the gazebo
16:11 and the pergola that was back there.
16:13 And it was very shaded when I planted these originally.
16:17 And then as we removed things, it got sunnier and sunnier.
16:20 So these are looking a little worse for the wear,
16:22 but I mean, the fact that they handled 100 plus temps
16:26 in full sun all day long, full sun,
16:28 that's pretty impressive to me.
16:30 That's a tough plant.
16:31 I think there'll be much happier in this location.
16:34 We're on the north side of this picket fence.
16:37 They'll get a little bit of filtered morning sun
16:39 that will come through this way.
16:41 And then this is pretty much what it looks like
16:43 in the afternoon in this spot.
16:44 And this has been like the poor,
16:45 lonely, forgotten spot over here.
16:47 Same with that flower bed over there.
16:48 In fact, I think I need to replace all the drip
16:51 in these beds because as I was digging,
16:53 I could see where the drip had run last
16:56 and not all of the emitter holes had moisture around them,
16:59 just some of them.
17:00 So I think we were dealing with some plugging
17:01 and that sort of business.
17:03 But anyway, it just filled this space beautifully.
17:07 Oh my gosh.
17:08 And those are the only things
17:09 I actually had time to dig up and move.
17:11 As I was working through the project,
17:13 I think the only other thing I'm going to dig
17:15 and transplant are the iris.
17:17 So that'll be on the docket like here really soon.
17:20 And then I think eventually I'll move those hibiscus out,
17:22 but let's take a look.
17:23 Okay, so you can see we have more sun up here now
17:26 in the afternoon.
17:27 In the fall and winter,
17:28 the sun's position in the sky is more this way.
17:31 So this avalanche birch, which I absolutely adore,
17:35 does provide a lot more shade.
17:37 In the summer, this is full sun.
17:39 Like right now, this would be in the full, full blasting sun.
17:42 So anyway, I'm happy with how it kind of tidied up.
17:46 This was the next area.
17:48 I again, did not do a real thorough job of raking
17:52 because, you know,
17:54 every day we would need to be out here raking.
17:57 I really took after the roses.
17:59 These were so dang thick.
18:01 I mean, so thick.
18:02 I will come in and I'm going to do even more thinning out
18:06 in the late winter, early spring.
18:09 And at that point,
18:11 what I usually do is train canes horizontally
18:14 as best as I can.
18:16 And then I leave little,
18:18 what do they call them, like spurs or something?
18:19 I don't know.
18:20 I just cut back to the first node
18:23 on all of these little branches.
18:24 And then they produce blooms on every single one of them.
18:27 They're amazing.
18:30 I have leaves in there.
18:31 I need to get the blower out and see if I can blow them out
18:33 because there is like this poly top
18:35 to protect the chickens, you know, in the winter time.
18:39 They're just in there chilling.
18:40 Hey Bev.
18:41 Where are the other girls?
18:43 Oh, there they are.
18:44 You're both down here.
18:45 Hey.
18:47 They're like, oh, I can see light now.
18:49 They were so shrouded,
18:50 which was probably really pleasant in the summertime.
18:53 It was nice and shaded in there.
18:54 But I had cut a bunch of like these new stems.
18:57 You can tell the difference.
18:58 These are the older ones that have more like ridges.
19:01 They're thicker, they're more woody looking.
19:03 And then the ones that are like bright green and fresh,
19:05 I usually cut most of those out.
19:07 I left a few in the interior on this one
19:10 that will probably come out when I prune again.
19:13 I didn't do anything with this juniper right here.
19:16 I need to trim it up and I tried to pull it in the pot
19:19 and make it straighter and it would not budge.
19:22 So I'm thinking that's gonna probably need to come out
19:24 because it's not getting enough sun here anyway.
19:27 So I think we'll do a,
19:28 maybe in the spring we'll do a prune and transplant.
19:31 Maybe this fall yet.
19:32 This is where all the brunnera came from.
19:34 I only dug this area.
19:37 I left that one because it looks really pretty right there
19:40 and it doesn't have as much burn.
19:43 And I don't know, I might want it there.
19:44 So I just left it for now.
19:46 And then you can see kind of where I stopped.
19:48 This is where the iris need to be dug out.
19:50 So I'll do that.
19:51 I'm gonna leave the lambs ear for now as well
19:54 because it's possible we might come through
19:57 with a small pathway to get through this flower bed
20:00 and I'll want something soft and sort of like that
20:03 underneath the crab apple.
20:05 It's a good height.
20:05 It's not getting into the canopy of the crab apple tree.
20:08 So it's kind of nice that way.
20:10 I would, the rose, I really took after that one.
20:13 Oh my word.
20:14 Actually found some powdery mildew on this one
20:16 because it was just so dang thick.
20:19 There was no way for air to circulate.
20:22 So anyway, there's all branches
20:26 that I should just cut out now, like these vertical ones.
20:29 It's nice on this structure though
20:31 because I can wire straight to the hardware cloth
20:35 on the coop.
20:36 There were a couple of times where I put in
20:38 one of those tack things.
20:41 What do they call them?
20:42 I just showed you.
20:43 Coax clip, is that right?
20:45 What I think I wanna try to do,
20:47 I'm gonna try to coax this one out.
20:49 In fact, I wonder.
20:50 I should just do that now.
20:54 Yeah, I need both hands for that.
21:01 I'm gonna try to pull this one out
21:03 and then we'll tack it here and train it that direction.
21:06 So the only other thing was the basket of gold
21:09 because that was just kind of perched out here
21:10 and then everything else I left.
21:12 So like I said, the hibiscus,
21:13 I just am not happy with it in this location anymore.
21:16 It's just, it's too big.
21:18 It's not a different enough texture
21:21 to the October glory maple here.
21:23 And they look a little bit messy to me.
21:25 Plus I want the crab apple to really be
21:27 the plant that shines here.
21:29 So we'll probably, I'm gonna enjoy the fall color
21:32 and the little bit of bloom color that they still have left.
21:36 And then we'll cut them back and move them
21:39 or I'll find a new home for them, one of the two.
21:41 And at that point, I will attack the other
21:44 Zephyrine rose that's back here.
21:46 You can see some big canes coming out.
21:48 So we'll need to prune that up a bit.
21:51 But I'm really happy with the progress today.
21:53 I've been looking at those Brunnera for a while.
21:56 So it feels good to have those at least dug up
21:59 and that'll listen.
22:00 And those roses, oh my gosh.
22:01 Every time I do a prune job like that,
22:03 I feel like I can breathe easier.
22:06 And I know the plant can breathe easier.
22:08 And it got warm, it's like 77 right now.
22:11 And the next 10 days, so I just talked about
22:15 how we had a freeze on the forecast, but it's gone now.
22:18 The lowest we're gonna get in the next 10 days,
22:20 it looks like it's 35.
22:22 So I mean, pruning and doing all of this kind of business,
22:25 I'm not worried about it in the slightest
22:27 because everything I pruned today has a good 10 days
22:29 before it's gonna get, I mean, it might be more than 10 days
22:34 until it gets cold enough to where it was something
22:36 that I'd need to be thinking about
22:37 and maybe not doing severe pruning and that sort of thing.
22:40 So anyway, super happy with this area.
22:43 It feels good to do some maintenance out here.
22:45 I hope you guys enjoyed the video
22:48 and we will see you in the next one, bye.
