François Burdet's Fatal Crash @ Rouen-les-Essarts 1977 (Aftermath)

François Burdet was killed during practice for the French Formula Renault supporting race preceding the XXV Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts, eighth round of the 1977 European Formula 2 Championship.

The accident occurred on Friday, 24 June 1977, during the second practice session reserved to Formula Renault drivers. Burdet's Martini - Renault suffered a mechanical failure accelerating up the hill between Nouveau Monde and Sanson corners. It left the track at the left hander immediately after Nouveau Monde and was launched by the guardrail into the trees. Taken to the hospital in Rouen, François Burdet did not survive his injuries. He was 24-year old.

A native of Annecy in the Haute-Savoie department, Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France, François Burdet was a newcomer to the French Formula Renault National Championship. He had his debut as a hillclimber, before moving to single-seater racing, taking part in the Formule Bleue series since 1975. In 1977 he progressed to Formula Renault.

After his death, the other competitors of the French Formula Renault Championship, which included many promising young drivers as Philippe Alliot, Joël Gouhier, Gérard Choukroun, Alain Prost and suchlike, raised 3,830 francs in a collection in François Burdet's name.
