Takeaways from the Detroit Lions 38-6 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Transcript
00:00 The Lions suffered a devastating defeat at the hand of the Ravens.
00:03 John, what do you make of the blowout loss for Dan Campbell's team?
00:06 Yeah, Vito, one of our biggest takeaways, one of those days, it was just right from
00:10 the jump, the Detroit Lions just did not look like they had it both offensively
00:15 and defensively against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.
00:19 Now you have to give credit to Baltimore.
00:21 The coaching staff put together a game plan with a bunch of new wrinkles that
00:25 were able to expose some of the weaknesses of the Detroit Lions defense.
00:29 But you also look at it from Detroit side.
00:31 It was just a performance that was not good in any real substantial category.
00:35 The defense gave Lamar Jackson far too much credit, way too much cushion given
00:40 by the defensive backs, making it almost easy for Lamar Jackson to be able to
00:46 pick apart the defense.
00:48 The defense did not get any tangible pressure offensively, man.
00:52 It was unfortunate that they started off so slow, could not get into any sort of
00:57 rhythm, and by the time they blinked three, three and outs, and they were
01:00 already down 28, nothing.
01:02 And it was just one of those situations where if you're not going to record a
01:06 first down until late in the second quarter, you're going to have a problem.
01:10 And I just think that it was a situation in which it was a perfect storm of
01:15 things going wrong for the Lions.
01:17 And it's one of those situations that on tape, they can learn a lot from.
01:20 I think in their two losses, they've just not done enough defensively to get over
01:26 the hump in terms of playing complimentary football.
01:28 The defensive line didn't do a good enough job of maintaining their gap
01:31 assignments.
01:32 The defensive backs gave up far too many big plays and you look at it and everything
01:38 involved from the coaching to the execution of the roster.
01:42 It was just one of those games that if you don't play well on the road, it's
01:47 going to end up being a situation in which you get destroyed 38 to six.
01:51 It was disappointing.
01:52 But at this point in the season, there are still a lot of positives for the
01:57 Lions to take away, even from a bad performance.
01:59 I think it might give Brad Holmes and the coaching staff more additional
02:03 information regarding what this team needs to get better.
02:06 And I think it gives clues to regarding some players that you got to really pay
02:10 attention to and coach them up more, including Jack Campbell and Jamison
02:14 Williams, two young players that did not play well at all in a tough game.
02:18 So the Lions sit at five and two, and I think they're going to really take out
02:23 their frustrations next week on Monday night football.
02:25 And if you're the Las Vegas Raiders, if you don't bring your A game, the
02:29 same thing could happen to them.
02:31 38 six loss, but I think the Lions are going to rebound nicely.
02:34 John, thanks for all the insight.
02:37 Jerry Gough struggled mightily on Sunday against the Ravens.
02:56 Sat five times, just not good at all from the veteran signal caller.
03:01 John, what do you make of the performance from Gough in week six against the Ravens?
03:06 Yeah, Vito, I think we all know now that if the Lions are going to go far in the
03:10 postseason, you're going to want to play a plethora of those playoff games at
03:14 Ford field, you saw a little bit of what has ailed Jerry Gough in his previous
03:20 outings on the road in the elements.
03:21 You saw passes that just were not crisp at all, could not hit Jamison Williams at
03:26 all.
03:27 You see a stat line for the young first round draft pick, and you recognize
03:31 targeted six times, unfortunately not able to secure any receptions.
03:36 Against Baltimore.
03:37 That can't happen.
03:38 Jerry Gough struggled mightily.
03:40 Now it's not all his fault, but he does own a lion's share of
03:43 the blame for his performance.
03:45 I just think that the offense did not get into any sort of rhythm.
03:49 I thought that his passes were, I think, a stray, a large reason due to the
03:54 weather, very windy and gusty.
03:56 The Lions did not have much of a run game.
03:58 And unfortunately they get down 28, nothing because they didn't get into
04:02 rhythm and they had so many three and outs.
04:05 So Jerry Gough did not have one of his better performances and they tend
04:08 to occur outdoors in the elements.
04:11 So that just lends to those that are concerned regarding if the line should
04:15 go out on the road to San Francisco playing in the elements, you're not
04:18 going to want that, hopefully the Lions will rebound and I think they will.
04:22 Because if down the stretch, they're able to secure a lot of victories,
04:26 then any game that's played in the playoffs at Ford field gives the
04:29 Lions a distinct advantage.
04:31 You can see the splits.
04:32 Jared Gough plays significantly better within the confines and
04:36 the comforts of Ford field.
04:38 He did not have one of his better performances and unfortunately it
04:41 proved costly in a blowout loss.
04:43 But no doubt about it, Vito, you know, the veteran is going to rebound and
04:47 everybody's going to really take that one on the chin and view it as a wakeup call.
04:52 And I think that the next performance against the Raiders is going to look
04:55 vastly different for Jared Gough.
04:58 No doubt about it.
04:59 John, thanks for all the time.
05:01 Thank you.
05:01 Given more of a lead role running back, Jameer Gibbs had a decent performance
05:19 against the Baltimore Ravens in a loss here today to discuss the rookie's
05:23 performance is SI All-Lions senior writer Vito Chirco.
05:26 Vito, I'm curious, what did you make of Jameer Gibbs being a
05:29 replacement for David Montgomery being the lead back for the Lions offense?
05:33 He recorded a hundred plus multi-purpose yards.
05:36 So you got to be excited about that from the rookie running back who really
05:39 hadn't emerged up until this week against the Ravens.
05:42 And now we know it was a blowout.
05:44 The Ravens were in control of the game all throughout, obviously,
05:47 too, and in the first half, it was already over at halftime.
05:49 We know that much as well, John.
05:51 But to see Gibbs shine a little bit there in the end of the game in the
05:55 fourth quarter, come to life, record 68 rushing yards.
05:59 His very first career NFL rushing TD as well.
06:02 And then all the yards that he attained as a receiver, too, showcasing his
06:06 versatile ability as both a runner and a pass catcher, John.
06:10 And here's a guy that really lit it up at Bama, lit it up at Georgia Tech,
06:14 showcased that versatility to be a dual threat back, a guy that could be really
06:18 elusive out of the backfield as a runner, but also as a pass catcher in the open
06:22 field, making guys miss because of his elusiveness, because of his speed, his,
06:26 you know, agility, athleticism, you name it.
06:29 This guy has it.
06:30 And now moving forward, you just hope, John, that this game here, this week,
06:35 since the loss of the Ravens, for Gibbs, a good performance is the start of a
06:40 bunch of good performances for the rookie back.
06:43 And the Lions will need it, obviously, too, as long as David Montgomery, the
06:46 Lions lead back, is out due to injury.
06:49 So Gibbs has to step up even more in a big way moving forward.
06:53 And he'll play a pivotal role for this team, offensively, as it tries to bounce
06:57 back, obviously now against the Raiders on Monday night.
07:01 And we'll see if Gibbs then, once he hits the bye, and then after the bye, if he
07:06 once again continues to make progress in his rookie season.
07:10 So for me, looking at Gibbs, John, and what he did, got to be very pleased with
07:14 his performance, because once again, it was an all-around solid performance, even
07:18 though Gibbs really didn't shine the fullest until the fourth quarter, when it
07:24 was considered garbage time.
07:25 It truly was for the Lions in that blowout loss to the Ravens.
07:29 John, the Lions should clearly be buyers at the October 31 NFL trade deadline.
07:48 What kind of moves do you see for the Lions as they near that deadline?
07:52 Yeah, Vito, it's going to be real interesting.
07:54 The Lions are going to face the Raiders on Monday night football with an
07:57 opportunity to start the first half six and two.
08:00 I think that would present a lot of positivity, a lot of hope for the Lions.
08:05 But I do think, and I hope the coaching staff really looks at closely, the film
08:10 of not the wins, but the two losses this year against Seattle and against the
08:15 Ravens, two games in which you were not able to get pressure and two games in
08:19 which your defensive backfield, your defensive backs were torched.
08:23 And I think when you look at collectively in those two games, it indicates you need
08:28 probably one more defensive lineman to compliment Aiden Hutchinson.
08:32 I think if you take the pressure off of him, his sack total numbers
08:35 will go through the roof.
08:36 And if you can add one more cornerback, you saw, unfortunately, Jerry Jacobs get
08:43 hurt on Saturday and then unfortunately ruled out for Sunday, and that just
08:47 threw everything out of whack and caused the Lions defense to play one of their
08:51 worst games of the season.
08:53 I think the focus for Brad Holmes should be on defense, but if you do turn to the
08:58 other side of the football, I think that the concerning play of Jamison Williams,
09:03 who just hasn't been consistent in regards to his role in this offense, I
09:07 mean, you can't have a football game in which you go out there and record no
09:11 receptions. So I think that if you can get another sure-handed receiver that can
09:16 be that reliable deep threat, then you go out and you pursue that.
09:20 But I think the focus should be more on the defense.
09:22 Maybe you look to teams like the Panthers, Vikings, the Broncos, teams that could be
09:28 mathematically eliminated that could potentially, you could have and find
09:33 players that you could plug in that are versatile and contribute.
09:36 But I do think this football team is good enough to add one or two pieces.
09:40 Could they make the big splash?
09:41 Chase Young type of thing.
09:44 Patrick Sertain of the Broncos.
09:46 I'm not seeing the big splash because I think the Lions have always taken the
09:50 long-term view.
09:51 But I do think they could find maybe middle of the road veterans that can come
09:55 in and be a reliable.
09:56 I would be all for a big splash.
09:58 That would be great in terms of getting this football team over the edge and maybe
10:01 even getting to the NFC title game and beyond.
10:03 But I think Brad Holmes tends to be a little bit more conservative in his
10:09 approach. I think there'll be moves made, but I'm not so certain they're going to
10:12 be for high-end talent.
10:13 I think they might end up moving on from day two and day three picks as opposed to
10:19 giving up first rounders for talent.
10:20 I think it's a good football team on its own.
10:23 But boy, if they were to be able to add a couple more pieces, then the likelihood of
10:27 playoff success just goes up.
10:29 My opinion, Brad Holmes, let's go shopping.
10:31 It's time. It's a trade deadline.
10:33 Time to improve this Lions roster.
10:34 Brad, make a blockbuster move.
10:37 Good for the team and good for all Lions too. We know that, John. John, thanks for all the time.
