00:00 another video. So we're back out in the Australian mangroves again today and if
00:04 you haven't guessed we're looking for mud crabs. One of my favorite things to
00:07 do is come out here into the mangroves and try and track down these big mud
00:11 crabs, catch them and cook them on the fire. Now as soon as we got down here I
00:16 spotted the first muddy of the day. It was just sitting out the front of its
00:20 hole shot back into it so I tried to get my hand in there because what you have
00:24 to do is reach your hand way back in these holes without trying to lose a
00:27 finger and yeah I'll roll you the clip.
00:31 There's so much mud in there. The crabs definitely in there somewhere but this
00:47 hole could go back a couple meters so I just can't get them out. That's alright
00:52 we're gonna keep looking the tide still coming up but pretty cool way to start
00:55 the adventure man getting straight into it. Tides coming up at the moment in
01:01 about an hour's time it'll be too high to find these mud crabs because the
01:05 water normally gets really murky around here so we're gonna start walking around
01:08 try and catch some dinner and cook it up on the bank so let's get into these
01:13 mangroves and see if we can find some giant mud crabs.
01:18 [Music]
01:38 So what we're looking for is big holes in the ground that these mud crabs can
01:43 be sitting in. They can be found out in the mangrove sometimes just sitting in
01:47 the mud but that's most likely where we're gonna find some big ones today. I
01:50 know a couple mud crab holes that hold big crabs just over that way so we're
01:55 gonna head over there now and see if we can find any.
01:59 [Music]
02:06 Oh look, see that? Yeah. We just spooked a muddy into this hole.
02:13 [Music]
02:23 These holes go back so far it's actually crazy. Can't find anything we'll go for
02:37 we'll keep walking. Big muddy right there. You see him Kurt? Do you see him? Yeah.
02:47 He is massive. Now we've just spotted him I don't think he's seen us yet.
02:55 So we're just creeping up on this huge mud crab right here. Gotta make sure that
03:07 he doesn't have a hole nearby.
03:09 Alright I'm gonna get around the back. That is one of the biggest mud crabs I've
03:18 ever caught. I'm gonna make sure that he doesn't get me you wouldn't want to get
03:22 tagged by one of those big claws. Take a look at that mate. Big Aussie mud crab
03:28 out here in the mangroves. Look at the size of that claw. That is awesome. So
03:33 this is exactly what we came out to the mangroves to find and that's gonna be
03:38 enough dinner for me and my mate but we might keep hunting around after this see
03:42 what else we can catch. So cool coming out to the mangroves and catching a feed
03:47 like this. Now you've got to put in the hard yards you've got to put in the
03:50 effort to try and get these crabs. I am literally covered in mud right now head
03:54 to toe but it's so worth it so fun getting out here getting out into nature
03:59 having these experiences and catching your own food. You can see this claw over
04:03 here this is big powerful claw and this one's used for cutting up flesh because
04:07 they're scavenger feeders they're not out here necessarily hunting they're out
04:11 here in the mangroves looking for things that they can feed on their
04:14 opportunistic feeders so if a fish dies if a stingray dies if a mud crab dies
04:19 they will eat it but I reckon what we're gonna do now is the tide is rising
04:23 noticeably as we're walking around here and the water is very murky so we won't
04:28 be able to see the crabs in there soon. Actually so cool because we just found
04:32 that mud crab hole over there and now we've got another mud crab about 10
04:36 meters away from it. They're out there in here in the mangroves we're gonna put
04:40 this fella over on the bank and keep on hunting try to get a couple more.
04:59 So just before we caught that crab we saw a mud crab shoot down this one now
05:04 I'm gonna try to do this all in one take might take a while to get him but just
05:09 to show that it's real. So you put your hand just under the mud
05:26 and you feel around and yep there's shell
05:35 oh this is an alright sized crab eh?
05:45 and you needed to determine which way the crab is facing
05:52 (music)
05:54 all right got him yes look at that right there that was the mud crab sitting down
06:08 that hole and we did it in one take look at he's trying to go back into it you're
06:12 not getting back down there mate take a look at that second mud crab out here in
06:17 the mangroves how good is that we got a big feed for lunch now I've been coming
06:21 out here into the mangroves since I was about 10 years old I've always been so
06:25 fascinated with coming out here and catching crabs with my bare hands
06:28 tracking them down and it's good to see in a place like this that is an
06:33 overcrabbed area that you can still get big crabs in here but that's absolutely
06:36 awesome mate you can see the tide behind us coming up we've got a feed of crabs
06:42 what do you reckon Kurto? I reckon we eat them. Eat them? Yeah. Might go for a bit more of a
06:47 walk around the mangroves and then cook up these crabs later on. A successful mud
06:56 crab hunt out here in the mangroves can't get any better than that so these
07:02 are big Australian mud crabs that have been caught out here in the mangroves
07:06 and this is where they live in these mangrove ecosystems it holds life for so
07:11 many species you go just out there to the main channel there's stingrays so
07:15 many fish and what that means is there's a lot of food that you can eat if you
07:19 were ever out here and needed to catch food these guys are probably my favorite
07:23 things to eat out here and just to show you where they live well you've seen us
07:27 where we're catching them but these big holes down in the mud there's actually
07:31 another crab living down in this one at the moment sometimes these holes can go
07:35 back meters at a time and this is what's living in them pretty crazy this mud
07:40 crab is absolutely massive like look at the size of that claw but yeah we've
07:45 came out here to the mangroves we've caught some mud crabs it's been really
07:48 cool now we're gonna go find a place to cook them up I'm heading out west in a
07:52 few days and what I'm gonna be doing out there is catching and cooking a bunch of
07:57 red claw crayfish so it'll be interesting to see how these guys taste
08:01 compared to them but yeah keen to get back out to the outback and get that
08:04 video out for you subscribe to the channel if you want to see that
08:09 [Music]
08:22 so we just came down to this little freshwater creek this is where we're
08:34 gonna be cooking up these mud crabs we're just gonna make a little fire cook
08:37 them in the coals eat them down the creek and continue the adventure
08:43 so what we're doing now is we're just waiting for this fire to die down into
09:04 coals and that's when we'll chuck these muddies on cook them for about 20
09:07 minutes flip them over do the other side but yeah super hot today might go for a
09:12 swim in the creek while I'm here
09:15 gotta wash all this mud off from the mangroves, it's still all over my face
09:26 [Music]
09:41 oh why not look how nice this creek is though made the fire just up there we'll
09:51 go back and chuck the muddies in so we'll just chuck these big muddies on
09:57 their back in the coals
10:01 like that and we'll leave them they'll start to turn red almost straight away
10:09 you'll see it slowly coming up the side of the crab and you want that full
10:12 orangey red color once they're cooked
10:17 [Music]
10:20 all right so the crabs are ready I'm just gonna chuck them out put them out
10:26 to the side for now and we're just gonna cook up a little sauce to go with them
10:31 chuck that on there with a bit of butter in it chuck some lemon in there all
10:35 right let's go down to the creek and eat them
10:45 number two good cook try all right let's try it
11:00 it feels really cool and you feel really connected with the earth when you can
11:08 actually go out and catch your own food yourself instead of buying it from a
11:12 shop or something and yeah there's so much food out there in the wild that you
11:16 can catch and track down if you know what to look for I think after this we
11:20 might even go looking for some bunya nuts which are a type of bush chukka
11:23 make a little fire back home and cook them up as well oh yeah not bad so I
11:32 just wanted to say I really appreciate all the support and all the comments
11:35 that I'm getting on these videos lately I've really been grateful that I can
11:40 come out here into the wild every week and film these experiences and find
11:44 these animals and by you guys commenting and telling me how much I inspire you
11:49 you guys inspire me to go outside and find these animals and lately I've just
11:53 been really driven to travel go to different places find different animals
11:58 I'm going to the outback in a couple days to go film some videos out there
12:02 Sumatra or Borneo later on in the year to hopefully film orangutans and yeah
12:07 just thank you so much for that I really appreciate all the support coming back
12:10 watching my videos there's gonna be a lot more cool adventures that I'm
12:13 posting every week so make sure you stay tuned for them but yeah that's it for
12:17 another video everyone thank you so much for watching I'll see you legends next
12:21 week in the next adventure Cheers
