00:00 The thing I love too about making movies
00:02 is seeing transformations and all of that.
00:04 When you all first took that first look at yourselves
00:07 in the mirror when you transformed into Priscilla
00:10 and into Elvis, what is that moment like?
00:12 - I'm trying to remember what that moment was like.
00:15 Our first day, our first filming day was us by the pool.
00:19 - For me, that was really fun to see them
00:20 for the first time as Elvis and Priscilla together on set.
00:23 - It was amazing.
00:26 - What are the kids listening to these days?
00:28 - Bobby, Darren, Fabian, and you.
00:31 - When you show up on the first day,
00:33 you're just sort of flying by the seat of your pants
00:35 and you're just crossing your fingers and hope it works.
00:37 And you're like, "Does it look right?
00:38 "Do I sound right?"
00:39 - And we're scrambling just to get it done.
00:40 - Yeah, we're just scrambling.
00:41 So I don't think you ever have a moment,
00:43 it's not like a perfect world where you go,
00:45 "I did it, here we go, we're entering into the world now.
00:48 "I figured it all out."
00:49 It's sort of as you go, you're just trying
00:52 to put it together.
00:53 - Did you have a little--
00:54 - I think--
00:55 - Yeah!
00:56 - I think my feeling--
00:57 - How could you not?
00:58 - My feeling was actually the opposite.
00:59 I FaceTimed my mom and me and my agent
01:04 and I think it was this, I was like--
01:08 - See me, love me, here I am, a velvet.
01:10 - It was totally ego.
01:12 - What did your mama say when you did it?
01:13 - I think she just started yelling.
01:15 She just started like, you know,
01:16 "Get your hands off me."
01:17 - That's awesome.
01:18 I can't imagine how you don't have that kind of like--
01:20 - It's impossible.
01:21 - Strike a pose, that moment for you.
01:23 - When Jacob walked in in the comeback special,
01:25 the leather suit, we were all like, "Oh."
01:28 - Yeah.
01:28 - He's not like you imagined.
01:30 - Well, first things first, when you're doing this film
01:34 and then you have Priscilla Presley say, "Yes,"
01:38 and "I give you the blessing" when you see the film,
01:42 what is that like and what does that do for all of you?
01:44 - Yeah, for me it was such a big responsibility
01:47 to tell her story in a way
01:49 that she would feel good about it.
01:50 I was always thinking, I've always just thought
01:52 about what I wanna make, but now I was also thinking
01:54 about something that represented her
01:57 in a way that felt accurate to her.
01:58 So that was a challenge for me in making it
02:01 and I was really so relieved and it meant so much to me
02:04 when she saw the film and said,
02:07 "That's what my life was like."
02:09 - Hi, what's your name?
02:12 - Priscilla Goyer.
02:13 - You like Elvis Presley?
02:14 (crowd cheering)
02:17 - Of course.
02:19 - You played her, so I can imagine
02:21 if you're holding your breath
02:23 when you know she's watching and you're playing her,
02:25 what was that like?
02:27 - How bad?
02:27 Absolutely surreal.
02:30 Yeah, I don't know, it was an interesting choice
02:33 to wait till Venice to watch it for the first time
02:36 and then her sitting right next to me.
02:38 Actually, Jacob was in between us
02:39 and I would turn to Jacob and go,
02:40 "What did she do?
02:42 "What did she see?
02:42 "What did she like?"
02:44 But yes, again, it was such a relief after the film
02:47 that she seemed visibly moved
02:49 and saw her life through the film.
02:51 It was everything.
02:52 - So you were eye spy for her?
02:54 - She was.
02:55 - You were like, "She's leaning this way,
02:56 "she's leaning to the right."
02:58 - Can you tell what Priscilla's impression,
03:00 I forgot you were sitting right next to her.
03:01 - I was a bit nervous to look over there
03:03 'cause it felt kind of invasive or something.
03:06 It was her private moments.
03:09 - And there were things that, I mean,
03:10 you had to play in the film
03:11 that I'm sure were very emotional for her
03:14 that weren't the easiest things to watch as well.
03:16 So I can imagine how you felt.
03:18 - Yeah, I mean, it's a surreal experience.
03:21 - Sophia, is it true that your budget was so low
03:24 at one point you said you wanted to auction off
03:27 a pickleball game with Jacob?
03:29 - Yeah, I don't know how that story got out.
03:31 That's true.
03:31 - That is true.
03:32 - We were so desperate, we're like,
03:33 "We need one more day of shooting."
03:34 And we were all playing pickleball
03:36 and like, "We'll have a game with Jacob.
03:39 "We'll auction off, we can get one day of shooting."
03:42 But we didn't really explain it.
03:44 - Are you the master pickleballer?
03:46 - No, no, no.
03:47 - He indulged.
03:47 - We got some training sessions.
03:48 - He indulged us.
03:49 - We had a few sessions.
03:50 - We did pickleball court on set.
03:52 - It did make me wonder, how does someone though,
03:54 with your filmography and everything that you've done,
03:57 not have the budget she needs to make such a movie?
04:01 - I know, I forget that now I'm established
04:03 and I've done a lot of movies,
04:04 I still feel like when I'm starting,
04:06 I'm always trying to patch it together.
04:09 And yeah, that's just the kind of reality
04:14 of the film business today.
04:16 But I'm grateful that I got to make this movie
04:19 and that it turned out the way I imagined.
04:21 - Why my daughter?
04:22 - Well, Sarah, I happen to be very fond of your daughter.
04:24 - We didn't get to really see Elvis perform in this film,
04:28 but we did get to see that moment when you sat down
04:32 and you were playing the piano.
04:32 Was that you?
04:33 - That was me in the shot, yeah.
04:35 I did learn.
04:36 - Yeah, that's you doing the piano.
04:36 - Yeah, that's me doing all of that, yeah.
04:37 - That was you playing the piano?
04:38 - Yeah, I was lucky.
04:39 I got taught a basic blues progression
04:41 and then the Jerry Lee Lewis thing on the keys
04:43 that he does is kind of fun.
04:44 - So you have a little get down.
04:45 - There's a little something in there, yeah.
04:47 But again, that's costume and environment
04:49 and these guys hyping me up.
04:51 You guys would hype me up whenever there was a musical scene.
04:54 It was very much, I can't do it.
04:55 And they were like, you can do it.
04:57 - You can do it.
04:58 Was that your real singing voice too?
05:00 - No, no, that's layers of impersonators' voices
05:04 and things like that.
05:05 - I was impressed.
05:06 I was like, I wonder how they felt with him,
05:08 but I'm impressed by that.
05:09 - My knuckles actually bled.
05:11 - Yeah, we were bleeding.
05:11 - They bled in that.
05:12 - Yeah, I thought I know.
05:13 - Yeah, in that sequence.
05:15 - Oh, 'cause it was 'cause of the (imitates bleeding)
05:16 - 'Cause of the (imitates bleeding)
05:17 - Wow.
05:18 - When you got to sit down and talk to Priscilla,
05:21 Kaylee, what kind of conversations did you have with her
05:25 that stuck with you maybe the most?
05:27 - Like I said, I just didn't want her to feel
05:29 like I was interviewing her.
05:31 And this is such a sensitive time in her life.
05:33 So when I sat down with her the first time,
05:35 I really just tried to see where the conversations
05:38 went naturally.
05:39 And we did talk a lot about their time together
05:42 and that was really precious
05:43 and talked about these little moments or inside jokes
05:46 that they shared and she would giggle in a way
05:49 that it was like she went back to those moments
05:51 and so special to watch.
05:54 Just being in front of her and talking about
05:56 all sorts of things and how she holds herself
05:59 and just such kindness, but also such a fierce,
06:03 strong woman who's lived this incredible life.
06:06 - You know, I think one of the things
06:07 about your performance that stuck with me,
06:10 and I mean, I'm sure you guys saw it,
06:11 but you played so much with your face
06:15 and just your eyes.
06:17 I'm sitting here thinking like,
06:19 I don't even know if she said anything in that whole scene,
06:22 but you said a lot, you know what I'm saying?
06:24 Like you said a lot and that, like that was wild to me.
06:29 That was really wild to me.
06:30 - That's good.
06:31 - Yeah, I'm so impressed with how much you can convey
06:33 in your face without saying anything.
06:36 - I think, Sophia was so great at also having these
06:39 almost picturesque silent moments that say so much
06:42 to the moment of her walking around Graceland
06:45 as a young girl that's silenced,
06:46 her trying out all the different chairs
06:48 or her putting on the false eyelashes
06:51 right before she goes to give birth.
06:52 Sometimes the most powerful moments to me
06:54 were the moments without any dialogue.
06:58 - Yeah, I was like, this movie could have been called
07:00 When a Woman's Fed Up, 'cause you saw the turn,
07:02 you know, the arc when she would, you would see emotion
07:05 and then when it got to the point when it was just like
07:08 that look of her, I was like, woo, Lord, run Elvis,
07:11 'cause she's done with you.
07:13 She's done.
07:14 - I mean, how did you get the accent down?
07:16 - I mean, there's so much information and footage
07:19 and music, so it was just, I had it on repeat in my ears
07:22 for a couple of months.
07:24 - Could you not shake it afterwards?
07:26 - No, I was okay.
07:28 I was, I didn't shoot for, it was 30 days.
07:31 - Black hair and more eye makeup.
07:34 - I don't know if I like it.
07:37 - What do you mean you don't know if you like it?
07:40 - Kirsten Dunst was the one who suggested that Kaylee play.
07:43 - Priscilla.
07:44 - My casting team suggested I meet Kaylee,
07:48 'cause I was like, who could play 14 to 29?
07:51 And they thought she was a talent that I should meet,
07:54 and so I met her and then, you know, it's a big decision
07:56 to cast someone and to have to carry a whole movie,
08:00 and I spoke with Kirsten, who had just worked with her,
08:01 and she said how much she loved working with Kaylee
08:04 and that she thought I would like her
08:05 and how talented she was, so that gave me the confidence.
08:07 - When you heard that, that she really like--
08:09 - She vouched for her.
08:10 - Yeah, she vouched for you and went to bat with you,
08:11 how did that make you feel?
08:13 - It was just, that also was so surreal, you know,
08:15 full circle, you know, Kirsten made such special movies
08:19 with Sophia, movies that I watched growing up,
08:21 so to have that full circle moment was just
08:24 an incredible way to enter this movie.
08:26 - Yeah.
08:27 (dramatic music)
08:30 (chimes)
