00:02 - Hey everyone, I'm Miguel Cortina with Motor Trend
00:09 here at Toyota's North American headquarters
00:11 in Plano, Texas, with the all new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.
00:15 This is an all new SUV that's slotting right below
00:19 the RAV4 in Toyota's SUV lineup.
00:21 And to talk more about that, I wanna welcome Chad Moore,
00:24 Toyota's vehicle specialist and an expert
00:26 on the Corolla Cross.
00:27 Chad, thank you so much for joining us.
00:29 - Thank you for having me.
00:30 - So this is the first time that we see the Corolla name
00:33 in a crossover, right?
00:34 But how does it relate to the Corolla sedan and hatchback
00:37 that we know today?
00:38 - Well, as the newest sibling to the Corolla family,
00:40 as SUV, it rides a little bit higher.
00:42 So it's a little over eight inches of ground clearance,
00:44 very close to the RAV4.
00:46 It actually will be available in front wheel
00:48 or all wheel drive.
00:49 We estimate to come in around 32 miles per gallon combined.
00:52 So this should be something for everyone looking
00:53 for a small SUV out there.
00:55 - So let's talk a little bit about the styling.
00:57 I like how it resonates quite a bit
00:59 with the RAV4 in some ways.
01:01 - Yeah, as you said, we have this distinctive black grille
01:03 flanked by these beautiful LED headlights.
01:05 There's even a cool little Corolla Cross badge
01:07 right there at the end of the headlights.
01:08 And then these 18 inch wheels that are on this XLE
01:11 really highlight the black body accents on the side as well.
01:14 - So let's talk about the powertrain.
01:17 What's moving the Corolla Cross?
01:19 - So it actually imports the two liter dynamic force engine,
01:23 which can be found in the Corolla SE and XSE grades.
01:27 It's 169 horsepower and it's paired with our direct shift CVT
01:31 which has a real first gear,
01:32 gives you a really nice linear acceleration experience.
01:35 - For Toyota, I mean, you guys have always had
01:38 hybrid powertrains in pretty much every model.
01:41 Will we see a hybrid powertrain here?
01:44 - Stay tuned for some more of that.
01:45 - All right, let's talk about inside.
01:48 There is quite a bit of technology there.
01:51 - Yeah, so as you said, we have Apple CarPlay,
01:53 Android Auto, and then we also have
01:54 available wireless charging.
01:56 And then you can also equip it
01:57 with the JBL premium audio system
01:59 if you really want to get that extra punch for your audio.
02:02 - So Shant, this is a Corolla Cross, right?
02:04 It's a crossover that's adventurous,
02:06 that I want to take it out on a road trip,
02:08 on a camping trip.
02:10 How has Toyota fitted it to deliver on that front?
02:13 - Yeah, you can seat up to five people.
02:14 It can tow up to 1500 pounds.
02:16 And we also projected to have class leading cargo capacity.
02:19 - Also, safety is always a big priority for Toyota, right?
02:23 Also, Toyota Safety Sense comes standard with it.
02:26 But what does that include?
02:27 What does that mean?
02:28 - Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 package
02:30 includes a pre-collision system
02:31 with automatic braking, pedestrian detection,
02:34 and bicycle detection, lane departure alert,
02:36 automatic high beams for those rural road trips,
02:38 and then also a dynamic radar cruise control,
02:41 which is your adaptive cruise control.
02:44 - Accessories available have to be,
02:46 like, there has to be plenty of them, right?
02:48 For something that is targeted towards a younger buyer
02:51 that wants to make their ride more unique.
02:53 - Yes, of course.
02:54 We actually have 28 accessories coming out
02:56 when the vehicle goes on sale.
02:58 Some of the ones I'll highlight,
02:59 you'll get your roof rack and crossbars.
03:01 You can also get an activity mount.
03:02 So you can put a bike on the back
03:04 and still use all your cargo capacity
03:05 for all the ice chest and everything else
03:07 you want to bring on your road trip.
03:08 - That's awesome.
03:09 Well, I do look forward to driving it pretty soon.
03:13 Chad, thank you so much for being here with us.
03:15 I appreciate it.
03:16 And now I want to welcome Austin Evans,
03:18 a media and tech influencer.
03:19 How are you? - How's it going?
03:20 Great.
03:21 Dude, this thing looks so sweet.
03:22 - I like it.
03:23 Yeah, it's pretty cool.
03:25 I like the ruggedness of it,
03:26 the adventure looks that it has.
03:28 - And it's big too,
03:29 especially when you look at how much cargo space there is.
03:31 Right?
03:32 I mean, obviously the Corolla hatch is really fun,
03:33 really sporty,
03:34 but this feels like it's much more meant
03:35 with the all-wheel drive and everything
03:37 to be a little bit more adventurous.
03:39 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:40 And it's, I think, a very good car for a young person
03:43 like yourself.
03:44 - Thank you.
03:45 (laughing)
03:46 - Who likes to go out on the weekends, you know,
03:48 and get out of the city.
03:49 And it finally has everything that you need.
03:51 - Yes, absolutely.
03:52 And the nice thing is it sort of does
03:53 kind of fill the full niche, right?
03:55 So it's a great daily driver,
03:56 good fuel economy.
03:58 It's actually got a really nice high seating position,
03:59 so it feels like you're driving a big vehicle,
04:01 but it's not massive,
04:02 it's not hard to park,
04:03 all that kind of stuff.
04:04 And it's got good tech, right?
04:05 So not only do you have Android Auto,
04:07 you have CarPlay,
04:08 you have that optional wireless charger,
04:10 you got USB ports.
04:11 It's a really nice place to be.
04:13 Plus, I like this little like accent
04:14 with like the C pillar,
04:15 the Corolla cross.
04:16 There's a lot of little like Easter eggs
04:18 all throughout.
04:19 - I heard there's north of 20 or something.
04:22 - So I was looking for them.
04:23 I found like seven or eight,
04:24 but there's clearly,
04:25 there's like a couple on like the back.
04:26 I won't give them away.
04:28 Obviously when you come from the Corolla Sedan
04:30 and the Corolla Hatch,
04:31 they both fill a niche.
04:32 And obviously incredibly popular.
04:34 So it's like a good daily driver.
04:35 You can go back and forth to work all day.
04:37 And then on the weekend,
04:38 go out camping or whatever fun stuff you want to get into.
04:41 It's a good sort of overall vehicle
04:42 for I think a lot of people,
04:44 especially with the tech that's inside.
04:45 - Exactly.
04:46 Awesome.
04:47 Well, Austin, thank you so much for being here.
04:48 Glad to have you with us.
04:49 - Thanks man.
04:49 I appreciate it.
04:50 Have fun.
04:51 - Thank you.
04:52 Well, this is the all new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.
