Ancient Herculaneum Scrolls Decoded with AI Technology
The Herculaneum scrolls, nearly 2,000-year-old documents, were thought to be illegible until now.
Using computer tomography and advanced artificial intelligence, researchers have made a breakthrough.
The "Vesuvius Challenge" competition aimed to decipher the hidden words on the scrolls.
Luke Farritor, a computer science student, decoded the first full word: "πορφυρας" or "porphyras."
Computer tomography scans the coiled-up scrolls, which are then virtually flattened.
Researchers use advanced AI trained to find the ink on the page.
Efforts to interpret the scrolls have been ongoing for centuries.
Approximately 1,100 carbonized scrolls were recovered from the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum.
The grand prize of the Vesuvius Challenge is still up for grabs.
"These manuscripts are dialogues that they're having about philosophical views of the world," says Professor Brent Seales.
Decoding the scrolls provides a deep connection to the ancients and their thoughts.
