Space exploration is an extreme example of living off the grid, as it involves completely separating yourself from Earth. However, even in space exploration, terrestrial systems and products are needed. As exploration becomes longer and farther from Earth, it requires carrying pieces of Earth with us. For example, on a nearby space station, ground supplies such as water, food, and air must be brought. If we settle on the Moon or Mars, we will also need to bring terrestrial plants, animals, and water, and maintain terrestrial systems during our stay there. Space agencies are working on the challenges of inhabiting other planets, which include problems such as water use and recycling, food storage and use, energy production and use, communication, and waste management. These problems are similar to the challenges faced by people living off the grid on Earth.
