From today suburbs of Wollongong and Shellharbour in New South Wales will be serviced by a green garbage run that residents won't hear coming. It's Australia's first hydrogen powered garbage truck. The Illawarra was selected by the waste service company because of the work by industry in the region to build a local hydrogen hub.

00:00 On a wet day in the Illawarra, the designers of the hydrogen truck say it's the perfect
00:05 opportunity to introduce the vehicle that produces only vapour as waste.
00:10 Waste and recycling company Ramondus commissioned Heizon Motors to create the vehicle for use
00:16 in Wollongong and Shell Harbour.
00:18 The location was specifically selected because of the recently opened hydrogen refuelling
00:23 station in Port Kembla.
00:25 The vehicle will run in the suburban streets of the community and be about 60% quieter
00:30 than a diesel engine.
00:32 It will also save about 25,000 litres of fuel a year.
00:38 So it's an important day for us, very exciting.
00:40 Australia's first zero emission hydrogen powered truck, garbage truck.
00:46 It's a great day for the Illawarra.
00:47 So this truck's designed to do the same as every other garbage truck but with zero emissions.
00:53 Wollongong Council says it's also excited to see it as a step in meeting its 2030 net
01:00 zero commitment.
01:01 It's only one step but it is part of a bigger process and that is addressing transport and
01:08 more specifically trucks such as this which use up a lot of diesel, transferring that
01:14 over to hydrogen.
01:15 Even though it is grey hydrogen, it's part of the process again of making and working
01:21 towards green hydrogen and now having the core gas facility at Port Kembla making hydrogen,
01:28 well we've got the fuel, we've got the technology in the truck and now it's being applied to
01:33 waste management and more specifically picking up the bins.
01:36 Hyzon says it's also working with several other users in the heavy freight industry
01:41 to roll out similar trucks across the next year.
