00:00 The cast of A Haunting in Venice includes some of Hollywood's best character actors,
00:05 and a few of them are pretty funny, too.
00:07 From a beloved SNL alum to a recent Oscar winner, here's where you've seen the film's
00:11 major players before.
00:13 Murder mysteries tend to be feasts for actors, affording them the chance to play colorful
00:16 and eccentric characters who may or may not like to dabble in homicide on the side.
00:22 Such was the case with director Kenneth Branagh's first two films in his Hercule Poirot cinematic
00:27 universe, Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.
00:30 "The murderer is here."
00:32 "And will stay here."
00:33 For his third go at adapting Agatha Christie's super sleuth for the big screen, A Haunting
00:38 in Venice, Branagh has once again surrounded himself with a cast that represents the cream
00:43 of the crop of character actors.
00:45 For instance, one of the younger members of the cast is Kyle Allen, who played Aaron Paul
00:49 and Michelle Monaghan's teen son in the Hulu series The Path.
00:53 But what about the seasoned veterans?
00:55 Let's run through the major players in this whodunit, shall we?
00:59 Besides Branagh, who also stars as Poirot, arguably the biggest name in the cast is Michelle
01:04 Yeoh.
01:05 Red hot off her Oscar-winning turn in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, the Malaysian superstar
01:09 boasts an incredible body of work, from her many hit Hong Kong action films to her stunning
01:14 performance in Ang Lee's martial arts classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
01:20 Among those joining Branagh and Yeoh in the film's cast are, surprisingly, Tina Fey, the
01:25 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live alum usually sticks to flexing her comedic chops, making
01:29 her relatively dramatic performance in A Haunting in Venice an intriguing change of pace.
01:34 This is also the second time Fey has been bitten by the murder mystery Bug-A-Flate,
01:38 having recently recurred as the egocentric true-crime podcaster Cinda Canning on Hulu's
01:43 hit series Only Murders in the Building.
01:46 Speaking of popular TV shows, Camille Cotan, Emma Laird, and Kelly Riley also play women
01:51 caught up in Poirot's latest murder investigation.
01:53 "What is happening?"
01:55 Of the trio, Riley is probably the biggest name, thanks to her lauded turn as hard-edged
02:00 Beth Dutton on Yellowstone.
02:01 However, she's no stranger to period fare like A Haunting in Venice, having previously
02:06 appeared in Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice.
02:08 Meanwhile, Cotan made her mark on Killing Eve as a ruthless and sadistic member of the
02:13 assassin organization known as the Twelve.
02:16 As for Laird, she, like Riley, is a member of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan's
02:20 Teepee Empire, thanks to her role as the sharp-witted escort Iris in Sheridan's Mayor of Kingstown.
02:25 Technically, Branagh's most recent film as a director was Death in the Nile, although
02:30 that was only because it was postponed multiple times due to a combination of factors.
02:34 Around the same time that film finally reached theaters in early 2022, Branagh picked up
02:39 an Oscar for writing Belfast, a drama he also directed, based on his childhood growing up
02:44 in Northern Ireland in the 1960s.
02:47 Clearly, his experience making the film was a good one, as Branagh has since reunited
02:51 with his Belfast leads Jamie Dornan and Jude Hill for A Haunting in Venice.
02:56 Dornan, of course, gained international fame for playing the emotionally damaged billionaire
03:01 Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades films.
03:04 Outside the world of erotic thrillers, he's also impressed with his dramatic turn in Belfast
03:09 and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, the latter of which gave him the opportunity to
03:13 showcase his previously unknown knack for absurdist comedy.
03:16 Thanks to A Haunting in Venice, Dornan has once again gotten the chance to tap into the
03:20 darker side of his screen persona, much as he did in the TV series The Fall, in which
03:25 he played a serial killer.
03:27 Last but certainly not least, the established Haunting in Venice ensemble is rounded out
03:31 by Italian actor Riccardo Scamarchio.
03:34 With numerous films to his name since he began acting 20 years ago, Scamarchio is undoubtedly
03:39 best known as the duplicitous, despicable crime boss Santino D'Antonio in John Wick Chapter 2.
