00:00 Cristiano Ronaldo changes retirement plan as he refuses to let go of Lionel Messi rivalry.
00:05 Cristiano Ronaldo wants to continue playing into his own 40s and still harbors hope of
00:09 playing in the next World Cup, in 2026, for Portugal in his last appearance.
00:14 Cristiano Ronaldo is hopeful of suspending his retirement plan and extending his career
00:18 to participate in the next World Cup.
00:20 Ronaldo had previously indicated he wanted his career at the top level to last until
00:25 at least 2024, which would include next summer's European Championship finals.
00:29 However, he wants to remain playing until 2027.
00:32 He will celebrate his 39th birthday in February while he will be age 41 by the time of the
00:37 next World Cup in three years' time.
00:40 Ronaldo became the highest ever goal scorer in international football in 2021 while he
00:44 has now scored a total of 123 goals for Portugal in 201 caps.
00:49 He captained his nation in last year's World Cup finals in Qatar and wants to have one
00:53 more shot at the competition, having won the European Championships in 2016 with Portugal.
00:58 Ronaldo's Portugal side were beaten 1-0 by Morocco in their quarterfinal in Qatar last
01:04 December and the superstar went straight down the tunnel in tears after missing out on the
01:08 chance to add the only major honor missing from his glittering CV.
01:12 He could only watch on as Lionel Messi won the tournament with Argentina.
01:16 Ronaldo rejected the theory that winning the World Cup would decide the debate about football's
01:20 greatest ever player between him and Messi by stating, "Even if I win the World Cup
01:24 that will continue.
01:26 Some people like me more, some less.
01:28 It's like in life, some like blondes, some like brunettes.
01:31 I have always had to show what I can do year after year.
01:33 I would love to win this tournament.
01:35 I'm ambitious but if you tell me I won't win any more tournaments I would still be
01:38 happy given all I have won.
01:40 In the history books all other records will be there.
01:43 But obviously a World Cup on the shelf wouldn't be bad.
01:45 It would be a dream."
01:46 However, a report in Spanish radio station Codena Cope has built on reports from Saudi
01:51 Arabia that Ronaldo has indicated to the football authorities in the nation that he plans to
01:55 continue his career through to early 2027, which would see him continue to play for another
02:00 three seasons.
02:01 Conversely, Ronaldo leads Messi on Champions League titles won with his five crowns eclipsing
02:06 Messi's three.
02:07 The Argentine officially was part of Barca's winning squad in 2005/06 but did not feature
02:13 in the latter stages.
02:14 Messi has won more league titles but Ronaldo, who is two years his elder, has scored more
02:19 goals at both club and international level.
