Transcript
00:00 Santa's in town, or at least he was in Sunderland in the 1970s and 1980s when the annual Father
00:07 Christmas Parade brought out the crowds. October was always the time when the traditional parades
00:14 were held to Joplings or Bins. Stars such as Tom Baker from Doctor Who and Melvin Hayes
00:21 and Windsor Davis from Adair Taft Hawkmon did the honours. First is the Joplings Parade
00:28 from 1977 when Tom Baker got an open top ride through the streets of Sunderland. He went
00:35 past Bins, Cantors and Sunderland Station on his way to Joplings to officially open
00:42 the store's Christmas season. It was a wet and cold day but Tom had a smile and a wave
00:49 for everyone. Just as welcome were Windsor and Melvin in 1982 and look at the crowds
00:57 who turned out to see them outside Buck's Fashions and Williams and Glynn's Bank. Did
