00:28 - A man and his wife, white people,
00:31 they were talking to my mom and dad.
00:33 And that man finally said,
00:36 "Would you like to come and live with us, little boy?"
00:39 He said.
00:40 - I was scooped out of Central Park at age five.
00:44 - Two of my cousins, they were picked up.
00:46 He took the door handles off from the inside.
00:49 So once he closed the door, the kids could open it.
00:51 - This is a special adoption program.
00:54 We have had great difficulty
00:55 in placing Indian and Métis children.
00:57 There was thousands of us taken across the country.
01:00 There's still thousands that are out there
01:01 in the world right now, lost.
01:04 - From the late 1950s to the mid 1980s,
01:07 tens of thousands of indigenous kids
01:09 were removed from their families
01:11 and placed into white families.
01:13 This is what we'd refer to as the 60 scoop.
01:16 - Little Bird is a mini series about one woman's experience
01:23 after being abducted from her home in Saskatchewan
01:26 and being adopted into a Jewish family in Montreal.
01:29 - Today, the scene I will be playing
01:31 is the one when I get taken away from my mom
01:34 and I get put in the cop car.
01:36 - What is a nation without its children?
01:39 That's such a violent thing, you know?
01:41 - I don't think there's one indigenous family
01:43 that hasn't been impacted by residential school
01:46 or the child welfare system.
01:48 - I want people to know that it's still alive.
01:50 It's still happening.
01:52 - In the current system,
01:53 which I call the foster care scoop,
01:55 children are in foster care
01:56 and non-indigenous people are getting a lot of money
01:59 to take care of our children.
02:01 - I feel very honored to tell this story.
02:04 It's an offering to come together and heal.
02:07 - It is about coming home.
02:09 It's about welcoming those who were taken.
02:11 And I think that this story in and of itself is about that.
02:14 It's about reclaiming everything that we are as a people.
