00:00 I'm gonna let you guys work here.
00:01 You want to learn the structures in the dressing room?
00:03 I expect a clean fight.
00:04 Touch gloves, go back to your corners.
00:08 This is a step-up fight for Giovanni Marquez
00:11 facing Dante Strayhorn,
00:13 who is now taking on his third consecutive
00:15 unbeaten opponent.
00:17 So, we'll see how Giovanni Marquez does
00:20 fighting at home, Tim.
00:22 That's a double-edged sword.
00:23 Ooh, yes, it is.
00:26 You know, you got family members, friends,
00:29 people jarring at you, wanting tickets.
00:33 You know, everywhere you look, people talking about it.
00:35 You're trying to keep your mind off the fight,
00:37 but they're constantly reminding you.
00:39 People telling that they betting on you,
00:41 you better win.
00:43 It's a lot to go into it, man.
00:46 Well, Giovanni Marquez says, "I was destined to be a fighter.
00:48 I come from a boxing family.
00:50 My grandfather, Arturo, trained my father, Raul,
00:53 who was a champion.
00:54 I'm a fighter, but so were two of my brothers,
00:58 Arturo and Raul Jr. were also fighters."
01:01 And he says, "I picked up everything that they did right
01:05 and did wrong, and hopefully I can be better."
01:08 Giovanni trying to stay behind that jab.
01:23 Sets up that overhand right.
01:26 Good shot.
01:27 Good setup right there.
01:29 Usually when you see somebody drop down to the body on you
01:34 or use the stab jab,
01:35 they're looking to set you up over the top.
01:37 And any time you see your opponent
01:39 actually change his levels,
01:41 you want to try to mirror him.
01:43 You want to drop your level
01:45 because he's trying to sneak you with something.
01:47 Understand that.
01:48 And right there, Giovanni saw that stray horn.
01:53 [ Indistinct shouting ]
01:57 Don't understand that. My goodness.
01:59 And he can punt.
02:00 Nice left hook from Marquez,
02:02 who you can see switches momentarily
02:03 to the southpaw stance.
02:05 Pick him up. Pick him up.
02:06 Wrong turn.
02:08 Stray horn did land a nice one-two earlier,
02:10 but Marquez is on him downstairs and upstairs.
02:13 His placement. I like Marquez's placement.
02:16 Great placement.
02:17 He says he loves having his father in his corner.
02:22 He's an encyclopedia of boxing
02:23 as a former world champion, an Olympian, a commentator.
02:27 He says he sees boxing from so many different perspectives
02:31 that he just fills me with knowledge
02:33 every time we talk about the sport.
02:35 That was a cool pull, outside slip.
02:37 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:39 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:41 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:43 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:45 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:47 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:49 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:51 [ Indistinct shouting ]
02:53 Nice shot to the body from Marquez.
02:56 It wasn't a Mexican left hook.
02:58 It was a straight right downstairs.
03:03 But, again, placement, you know,
03:06 is one thing to throw punches.
03:07 There's another thing to actually place your shots.
03:11 That's where you exactly want the shots to land.
03:13 And that's what I'm seeing with Marquez.
03:16 Good defensive responsibility as well.
03:19 Nice.
03:22 First round in the books here for the Giovanni Marquez
03:26 Dante Strayhorn fight.
03:28 Up next here in Rosenberg, Texas,
03:31 it'll be 2016 Olympian Elite Guido Villanueva.
03:36 Who is coming back from the first loss
03:39 of his professional career against Johnny Rice.
03:43 And it was a fight that he had completely in control.
03:46 Knows Johnny Rice from sparring with him.
03:48 Said, "I handled him every time we sparred.
03:51 I handled him during the first seven rounds."
03:53 Until this punch opened up the eyelid of Guido Villanueva.
03:57 It was impossible to get that blood from flowing.
04:01 And his cut man told us that was an arterial cut.
04:05 And that's why it was so difficult to stop the bleeding.
04:08 The referee stopped the fight and Timmy said,
04:10 "I learned pretty much don't play with my food.
04:13 There's nothing written in boxing.
04:15 The fight can change at any moment."
04:18 He got caught in the rhythm step.
04:19 Yep.
04:20 I asked him, does he know why he got hit
04:23 or why he got caught with that right hand?
04:25 They explained something to me.
04:26 I don't even remember. It wasn't right.
04:28 He got caught in the rhythm step.
04:30 He likes to use footwork.
04:31 He likes to bounce in and out.
04:32 And sometimes when he disengages,
04:34 he goes into a little happy feet rhythm step.
04:36 And he got caught in the process.
04:40 He wasn't ready.
04:41 Nice body work from Strayhorn.
04:43 Referee Alejandro Leon warns him to pick them up.
04:47 Strayhorn a little bit more active here in the second round.
04:52 Well, he has to be. He has to be.
04:54 Because that's the only way you're going to be able
04:55 to keep Marquez off of him.
04:56 Because Marquez, he's pushing the pace,
04:58 but he's pushing it smartly.
04:59 He's using his footwork.
05:00 Nice right from Marquez.
05:01 To get in the inside.
05:02 And again, he's placing the shots extremely well.
05:04 He's sharp and accurate with his punches.
05:06 But you see the pressure.
05:08 And he's still in range.
05:10 Ooh, that's a nice short overhand right from Marquez.
05:13 Those are blocked by Strayhorn.
05:15 And a nice counter left.
05:17 The uppercut from Marquez also finds a home.
05:20 Strayhorn right now is pushing off.
05:24 He's doing great pushing off to break the posture of Marquez.
05:29 But he's not firing back.
05:30 You know, when you push him straight up,
05:32 that's an opportunity to let your hands go.
05:34 I don't know if he knows that.
05:36 There's a nice long left from Strayhorn,
05:38 taken well by Marquez.
05:39 But did you see the roll right there from Marquez?
05:41 A lot of slick stuff on the inside.
05:42 There's an angle change right there
05:44 going into southpaw stance.
05:46 In close, and look at the uppercuts.
05:48 I like it.
05:51 This kid is-- You know what?
05:53 I like it.
05:54 Raul Marquez was telling us,
05:56 you don't have to be a Mexican warrior
05:58 like I was to win fights.
06:00 You can be a fighter with a Mexican style,
06:04 but also have just enough movement
06:07 to evade those shots.
06:08 And that's what we see from Marquez.
06:09 It's those subtle movements
06:12 that make him difficult to hit clean.
06:13 Small little nuances like that.
06:15 You see the little shoulder roll right there,
06:16 taking some steam off that right hand.
06:19 It's a grazing blow.
06:20 He didn't take the full effect of that right hand,
06:22 but he did take it with that left foot.
06:24 Good defense also by Strayhorn there.
06:30 That's his love at home.
06:31 And what you don't understand by the way he's switching,
06:34 he's switching and he's cutting off the angle.
06:37 Look at that uppercut.
06:38 That's what happens when you can land your left hook.
06:40 Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
06:46 Come to me. Come to me.
06:47 Give me your glove.
06:49 Raul Marquez told us he cuts off the exits
06:53 and he punishes you,
06:54 and that's exactly what happened here
06:55 in round number two.
06:57 Strayhorn fighting back,
06:58 but when you let your hands go,
07:00 you open yourself up for shots like that.
07:02 Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
07:06 Marquez can fight.
07:08 Give me your glove. Give me your glove.
07:10 Strayhorn telling his corner, "I'm all right."
07:13 Marquez will test that theory
07:15 with the power shots here on Strayhorn.
07:18 And referee Alejandro Leon steps in and stops the fight.
07:22 The kid hugged by his father, the former world champion.
07:26 Houston, stand up for the young man, Giovanni Marquez.
07:31 Got another one.
07:32 Definitely got another one.
07:34 Love his defensive responsibility,
07:36 how technically he is.
07:37 He puts pressure on you.
07:38 He's straight in front of you.
07:39 He doesn't get hit with big shots.
07:41 The punches that he was setting up,
07:42 those uppercuts up the middle,
07:44 the body shots with the southpaw,
07:46 there's so much to like about this young man,
07:48 and he has the punching power as well to go along with it.
07:52 I mean, it was an absolute clinic
07:55 in every aspect of the game.
07:57 Yes.
07:58 A lot of times we say clinic, a boxing lesson,
08:01 and it just means a boring, long fight.
08:03 That's not what we saw tonight.
08:04 We saw defensive responsibility, offensive proficiency,
08:10 and to pay it off with power is rare.
08:13 Control, control, control, control.
08:16 He controlled Strayhorn the entire fight.
08:21 And this is -- he put him where he wanted to put him.
08:23 Got caught with a little hook,
08:25 but you see him catch that body shot.
08:26 But here's the uppercut.
08:27 Just short little uppercuts right on the inside.
08:31 You see Strayhorn right there.
08:33 You got the high guard up.
08:35 He's getting split with that uppercut,
08:37 that right uppercut.
08:40 Second knockdown right here.
08:42 Again, you see the defensive responsibility,
08:44 and then you see the tee-off right there
08:46 and the follow-up with the combinations.
08:48 Vicious combinations.
08:51 And here's the end right here.
08:52 Just letting his hands go.
08:54 He knew he had his man hurt.
08:56 The referee was standing nearby.
08:57 He knows that.
09:00 Put some salt and pepper on him,
09:02 and the referee stepped in and stopped.
09:03 He said, "It's done."
09:04 -And you made your dad happy. -Yes.
09:06 -The former world champion Raul "El Diamante" Marquez.
09:08 He told me, "I hope Tim doesn't say anything bad about my son."
09:13 Guess what? -Man, look.
09:14 -Giovanni didn't give you a chance, Timmy.
09:16 -Look, man. Look.
09:18 The fight is not with me, fellas.
09:20 The fight is not with me, fighters out there.
09:22 The fight is with the fighter that you're fighting in the ring.
09:24 That's it. You do your job.
09:26 I got a job to do. I'm gonna do my job.
09:28 Simple as that.
09:29 He looked spectacular tonight.
09:31 I want to see more of this young man.
09:33 Giovanni Marquez.
09:35 Power with the uppercuts in the right.
09:37 Power with the left hook.
09:38 Great defense. Gets the knockout.
09:40 That's ended up to Mark Chinook.
09:43 -Ladies and gentlemen, here inside Fort Van Epperson.
09:47 Referee Alejandro Leon calls a stop to this bout
09:50 at 2 minutes, 47 seconds of round number 2.
09:55 For your winner by technical knockout,
09:59 Giovanni Marquez!
10:05 -So, Giovanni Marquez improves to 7-0,
10:08 gets his fifth knockout win,
10:10 makes everyone in Houston happy and proud.
10:14 Coming up after we take a short break, our--
