00:00 I am going to attempt to learn a standing backflip in 24 hours or less.
00:05 To achieve this tall order, I have assembled the Avengers of backflips.
00:10 Christopher Troy, professional stuntman.
00:14 Margetta Frazier, competitive gymnast on the UCLA gymnastics team.
00:19 Yoshi Sudarso, professional cheerleader and winner of 2011 WORX.
00:24 Also, a Power Ranger.
00:26 Hopefully, with the power of the coaches combined, I will get to achieve my lifelong dream of doing a backflip.
00:32 And then I'll be like the cool person at the party who can do backflips.
00:35 Challenge accepted.
00:37 But before we get to backflipping, I want to say a huge thank you to VitaFusion,
00:44 America's number one gummy vitamin brand, for sponsoring today's episode and making awesome experiences like this possible.
00:50 VitaFusion multivitamins are specifically formulated for adults to support overall health and wellness.
00:56 And they are super tasty.
00:58 I personally have been loving the women's gummies and I take to a day.
01:01 One of my favorite parts about VitaFusion is that they have planted over 200,000 fruit trees
01:06 in partnership with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation to support underserved communities.
01:11 That is amazing and I love when people give back.
01:13 So if you want to try some out for yourself, you can check them out via the link below.
01:17 Troy, Mark Zetta, Yoshi, I have assembled you, the masters of backflips today,
01:23 to hopefully teach me how to do one before the end of today.
01:27 Do you guys think this is possible?
01:29 Actually, yeah, fully.
01:30 We're good, everything's fine, you're going to do great.
01:33 The sky's the limit. Just believe in your dreams, you know?
01:37 Okay, great.
01:39 You just spewed out every inspirational quote.
01:42 There's no I, T, and uh.
01:44 No, you're going to be fine. It's up here.
01:46 A lot of it is visualization of being able to do it.
01:49 If you see yourself doing it, you'll be able to land it.
01:52 You're getting the gamut of everything that you can do with a backflip.
01:55 You can get momentum into it with cheer.
01:58 You can be as pretty as possible, hopefully, at the very end of it, like her.
02:01 But she can start dirty and ugly like me, right?
02:04 Where should we start? Do you guys want to like huddle?
02:09 Do you want to go first? Should we talk?
02:10 Let's talk about it.
02:11 We can start off with doing a spotted back tuck with her and see where she is.
02:15 What I'm thinking is we stack those resis over there.
02:19 She jumps up to a candlestick a few times.
02:22 Usually when I'm prepping for something, I'm like, "I don't know if I can do this."
02:25 I need to feel the floor.
02:27 So I like to wreck before I throw anything.
02:31 You want to throw her on the floor?
02:32 Do you want to know why? It's because I did the worst.
02:34 Now I can do it. It's not in my way anymore.
02:36 You want to do that?
02:37 Yeah, absolutely.
02:38 Are we putting hands in?
02:39 Hands in. Backflip in three.
02:41 Oh, God, yeah. Are we saying it or doing it?
02:43 Oh, God.
02:44 One of us is the truth.
02:51 The other two are lies.
02:53 Okay, Michelle, I've convinced them to start with what I would do.
02:57 In my head, I have to know what the floor feels like, right?
03:00 Because that's the thing. That's the enemy.
03:02 That's the worst that could happen.
03:03 So we're going to do a softer version of that.
03:05 You're going to come over here and just take a backfall or a flat back onto this.
03:09 Like an attack?
03:11 That's it.
03:12 Perfect.
03:13 Are you all going to move the mat out?
03:14 No, we're not.
03:15 We'll stand over here.
03:16 Not yet, we won't.
03:17 Not yet.
03:18 Okay.
03:19 Okay.
03:20 You're doing that on purpose.
03:21 That was the stiffest move I've ever seen.
03:24 Now go higher.
03:25 Don't be nice to her right now.
03:26 She's not going to learn if we're nice.
03:28 Try not to land on your butt first.
03:29 Try to land kind of flatter.
03:31 Yeah.
03:32 So you're hearing that, okay?
03:33 So because we're doing a flat back, and I know you've learned this already,
03:36 you're keeping your chin to your chest.
03:38 On the day with a backflip, you're going to come up,
03:40 and you're going to end up finding yourself, right?
03:41 I'll be honest with you.
03:42 I'm probably not going to tell her to look for it,
03:45 because for a back tuck, technically, you want your chin in the hole.
03:48 Yeah, but I want you to go up, okay?
03:50 Have you ever done that with a ball here?
03:51 I just think you should have so much fun.
03:53 Oh, my gosh.
03:55 She's like the opposite of a gymnast.
03:56 What is happening?
03:57 I think the biggest challenge is too many cooks in the kitchen.
04:00 That could lead to confusing Michelle.
04:03 I promise you we know what we're doing,
04:05 but we may need to break off and just do it separately,
04:09 because I think we all have proven that we can do a backflip.
04:11 Yep, yep, yep.
04:12 We have our own methods, right?
04:13 All right, you go first.
04:14 Oh, yeah, you're going to hit the deck.
04:16 No, I don't want to hit the floor first.
04:19 You're not--okay, so this thing is safe.
04:22 That floor, a little less safe.
04:24 But we're going to get there, right?
04:25 Okay, yeah.
04:26 Okay, so do a couple more of these jump flat backs.
04:28 Ready, whoo, perfect.
04:31 Look, ah.
04:33 You feel too comfortable with this.
04:34 I'm going to move this.
04:35 Hey, Yosh, can I get you real quick?
04:36 I thought you told me you wanted me out of here.
04:38 [laughter]
04:40 No, just the stop one.
04:41 I've actually wanted to drop there.
04:42 Doesn't hurt, promise.
04:44 I thought I was landing on my feet today.
04:47 Okay.
04:48 You will.
04:50 Okay, you're jumping backwards, jump up.
04:52 Okay.
04:53 Right, I'm going to be right here.
04:54 Don't move it.
04:55 I know.
04:56 Oh, my God.
04:57 Oh, my God.
04:58 I'm doing the opposite.
04:59 I'm holding it.
05:01 Whoo.
05:02 Okay.
05:03 Now, one more, keep those hands up above you.
05:05 And they can always live there.
05:06 In case I freak out the last second, I can protect my head.
05:09 So, with my background as a professional stuntman,
05:12 I have the knowledge of safety,
05:14 but also the ability to kind of get through it.
05:16 I know it's going to be all mental for Michelle,
05:18 just like it is for most people.
05:20 Look at her face.
05:21 You can see her face.
05:22 She's going.
05:24 Breathe, girl.
05:25 So, Yoshi is going to take over.
05:28 I want you to think about the landing.
05:29 I'm going to spot you the whole way.
05:31 I'm not going to let go.
05:32 Oh, my God.
05:33 I promise I won't.
05:34 Oh, my God.
05:35 Oh, no, I would never.
05:36 I would never.
05:37 Here, we swing.
05:38 We do a straight jump.
05:40 My pants almost came off.
05:41 Good.
05:42 So, I'm not going straight up in the air.
05:43 I'm going a little back.
05:46 Good.
05:47 So, now, all I want you to do is do that same thing
05:50 and just tuck.
05:52 And up.
05:53 Good.
05:54 One more time.
05:55 Think about getting your knees up to your chest, okay?
05:57 Whoo.
05:58 Oh, my God.
05:59 Good.
06:00 That was it.
06:01 Good.
06:02 It feels like I'm about to do it.
06:03 That's what we're about to do.
06:05 So, the next step, I just want you to try to throw it.
06:09 Your arms go in almost a circular motion,
06:12 and all you're going to do is you're going to wrap around
06:14 and try to get your legs over,
06:16 because this is hard to do with just your legs.
06:18 If you have your arms, you can help pull.
06:20 And I won't hit you in the face?
06:21 You won't hit me in the face.
06:22 Okay. Wait, touch me.
06:23 You won't believe in me.
06:24 No, I'm going to come in.
06:25 Okay.
06:26 Okay.
06:27 Ready?
06:28 Yeah.
06:29 Go ahead.
06:30 Yeah.
06:31 Whoo.
06:32 Oh, my God.
06:33 [ Screams ]
06:34 You did it.
06:35 Oh, my God.
06:36 That was okay.
06:37 But when she threw herself,
06:38 instead of doing this thing that we worked on,
06:40 you did this.
06:41 Where's the floor?
06:42 Okay.
06:43 Yeah.
06:44 Now we're going to refine your movements.
06:45 I'm going to let Mars take that.
06:46 Okay.
06:47 So, with my gymnastics background,
06:49 everything is incredibly technical and perfect.
06:52 When it comes to teaching Michelle how to do the split,
06:55 I'm going to really encourage her to just do what feels comfortable
06:58 and just worry about the perfection part later.
07:00 I'm going to get you lit with a landing.
07:02 Lit with a landing.
07:04 So, we're going to literally just roll back
07:06 and land on our feet, right?
07:08 [ Thud ]
07:10 Yeah, and you just go.
07:11 Just rolling off.
07:12 Yeah.
07:13 Can I put my hands here for the first one?
07:15 Yes, of course.
07:16 Okay, okay.
07:17 Okay.
07:18 Yeah!
07:19 Okay.
07:20 That wasn't crazy.
07:21 She's going, like, hella slow.
07:22 Think about feet to the floor.
07:23 Don't think about the roll.
07:24 Think about feet to the floor.
07:25 Let the body hit the floor.
07:26 Yes.
07:27 Hey, that was good.
07:28 That was really solid.
07:29 I want to see how high you can jump.
07:31 You're going to jump to your back and do something called a candlestick.
07:34 It's pretty much, oh, this.
07:36 You're landing like that on there.
07:38 You're going to try your best.
07:40 You're going to try your very hardest.
07:41 [ Laughs ]
07:43 To your back and feet up.
07:45 Oh, my God.
07:46 Yes, now tuck later.
07:48 So, you're going to do candlestick, legs straight,
07:50 and then when you get here, then you're going to tuck.
07:53 Tuck.
07:54 Awesome.
07:55 And just roll.
07:56 So, on the next one, you're going to do the same exact thing,
07:58 and then when you're on your back, you're going to do a back roll to your knees.
08:01 Exactly what you just did off of here.
08:04 Roll, roll, roll, roll, roll.
08:06 Yeah!
08:07 So, you just did the hardest part, which is the open snap jump.
08:10 And now, when you have this momentum, as long as you grab your legs,
08:14 you're going to make the flip.
08:15 To get anything to rotate, it's all about changing its width.
08:20 If you start open, you're going to flip slow.
08:22 If you want to flip fast, you make your body small.
08:25 You want to go to a trampoline?
08:26 You can do some on there.
08:28 Sure.
08:29 So, you're going to start right here, and you're going to go one, two, three.
08:35 Don't even think about it.
08:37 Your body is going to do it.
08:40 That was cool.
08:41 I'm here.
08:42 I'm going to come in when I need to, but I'm not going to do my left hand.
08:45 I will spot here.
08:48 You got this.
08:49 You just did it.
08:53 Tell me if you're not going to go, because my heart is--
08:56 Okay.
08:59 Okay.
09:00 Easy.
09:01 Aggression is way there.
09:02 That was great.
09:03 Think more about tucking.
09:05 Just get all the way around.
09:06 My motion is, as soon as I go, it's going up and around and pulling.
09:11 Marcet said something really great about this idea is when you expand
09:14 and then you contract is where you get that rotation, right?
09:17 Just like ice skating, you know, they're wide, and then they--
09:20 That's where you're going to get your rotation.
09:23 [Screaming]
09:27 That was easy.
09:29 That was it.
09:30 Oh, my gosh.
09:32 Was that cool?
09:34 Yeah, that was cool.
09:35 You fucking landed it by yourself.
09:37 We can do it again?
09:38 Yeah, absolutely.
09:39 It looks good.
09:40 I mean, it's all about just refining everything.
09:42 Do you see anything?
09:43 That's a really good question.
09:45 Are you looking at anything?
09:47 A lot of people close their eyes when they do gymnastics.
09:50 Can you spot the bottom of that wood beam?
09:53 Uh-huh, just, like, try to look at it?
09:55 For as long as you can, eye on it and then tuck.
09:58 Okay.
09:59 Okay.
10:00 Ready?
10:01 Yep.
10:02 Nice.
10:03 Oh, my God.
10:04 Yo, that was so much higher.
10:05 Really?
10:06 Yeah, your head is like this off the ground.
10:07 Oh, my God, that was awesome.
10:08 That could have been by yourself.
10:09 We've done all this stuff this morning.
10:10 We really feel like you've got it handled, so we'll do it with my full spot,
10:15 and then I'll take away spot little by little by little by little,
10:18 and we'll just see how far we can get because we don't want to get into negative returns.
10:21 Right?
10:22 Your body can only take so much.
10:23 I don't need you to force anything because we want you to be safe.
10:26 You got it.
10:27 You ready to just throw one with that spot?
10:30 Okay.
10:31 Your spot is over there.
10:32 We're going to go super aggressive, hit at the apex.
10:36 Ready?
10:37 Set.
10:40 Nice.
10:41 Okay.
10:42 Get one out of the way.
10:43 That's fine.
10:44 You were very early.
10:45 You were very open.
10:46 I think this goes that versus this.
10:49 Right?
10:50 Yeah, there you go.
10:53 Chest doesn't come down to knee.
10:54 Knees to chest.
10:56 Yes.
10:57 Oh, I felt it going back.
10:58 That's the difference.
10:59 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:00 You should feel like you're--
11:01 That's what's going to happen, yeah.
11:04 Oh!
11:05 Stay in, stay in.
11:06 You know that one you didn't stay in the ball, right?
11:07 No.
11:08 Yeah, I know.
11:09 You want to watch the playback?
11:10 Watch the playback.
11:11 Watch the playback so you can kind of see.
11:12 This is really important because sometimes when you are doing something,
11:15 you are swearing.
11:16 I was going left, right?
11:17 Or whatever it is, and you're definitely not doing it.
11:19 So you need that outer perspective.
11:21 See how you were open like that?
11:22 You were so high.
11:23 You piped up a little bit.
11:24 Really?
11:25 I was high?
11:26 You could have made that.
11:27 You don't need a huge jump to do a back flip.
11:29 You can do it small, but I'm going to tuck like a mother trucker.
11:33 Oh, my God, I'm horrified.
11:35 As long as it's small, if I'm tight, I'm going to get around.
11:38 But that tightness is more important than the jump.
11:40 You guys should try one more.
11:41 No.
11:42 No.
11:43 I actually really don't think you should.
11:44 Okay.
11:45 Because you're going to not do it,
11:46 and then it's going to put more negative thoughts into your head.
11:48 Okay, I'm just going to lay down.
11:50 Lay down.
11:51 I think she needs to chill for just a second.
11:52 Yeah.
11:53 It's like I know all the steps, and then I get in the air,
11:56 and it's like, oh, there's no time to do any of the steps,
11:59 and then it's over.
12:01 What she has done in the span of a couple hours,
12:03 it takes people weeks to learn, if not years.
12:07 She has it.
12:08 It's just all mental at this point.
12:09 Yeah, it's almost one of those things that you'd prefer to sleep on.
12:13 So your body goes ahead and catches up with all of your mind mechanics,
12:17 and you're like, got it, you know.
12:19 So the 24-hour challenge is like the hardest part of it.
12:21 Right.
12:22 I think we bring her back in after she's a little bit rested.
12:24 Yeah.
12:25 And see how far we can get.
12:26 Absolutely.
12:27 But I don't think we need to go further than that.
12:28 Otherwise, it's going to start going downhill.
12:29 Of course.
12:30 Set.
12:32 Cool.
12:33 That would have been good if you jumped.
12:34 Look at that.
12:35 Look at that turn already.
12:36 Whoa, that's not cool.
12:37 And I want you to give me a big yell.
12:39 [SCREAMING]
12:40 Deeper.
12:41 [SCREAMING]
12:42 OK, go.
12:44 Nice.
12:45 The yell inspired.
12:46 [SCREAMING]
12:50 Nice.
12:52 All right.
12:53 Aloha.
12:54 Yes.
12:55 Oh, I barely touched.
12:56 Get it in, in, in.
12:58 OK.
12:59 Get there faster.
13:00 The arms need to get to the legs faster.
13:02 Oh, yeah.
13:03 It still went back.
13:04 Her burning daylight, Michelle.
13:06 I know.
13:08 Oh, almost had it.
13:09 Almost had it.
13:11 Is that it?
13:12 Woo-hoo-hoo.
13:13 All right, it is mental now.
13:14 Because every time I say I'm not going to give you a big spot,
13:16 you do it fully.
13:17 All right, come on.
13:18 Nail it.
13:19 [SCREAMING]
13:20 Nah, deep.
13:21 From here, from here.
13:22 Don't throw up.
13:23 [SCREAMING]
13:24 OK, go.
13:25 Oh.
13:26 [LAUGHING]
13:29 I like that one.
13:30 That was a good one.
13:31 [LAUGHING]
13:33 I think your mentality right now is just
13:35 going to go down from here.
13:36 You've constantly been doing this, right, consistently.
13:39 I say we end on an up, sleeve it off.
13:42 And again, your brain's going to catch up to your body.
13:44 You need the rest to get the mind-body connection.
13:47 It's a real thing.
13:48 My goal within 24 hours was to land a standing back flip,
13:52 landing on my feet all by myself.
13:55 And I didn't quite get that.
13:57 So I'm going to rest and recover and try again in the morning
14:01 one hour before the 24-hour period.
14:04 One last time to see if I can land this thing on my two feet.
14:07 During the course of the day, I attempted
14:09 the back flip over 150 times.
14:12 That night, I tried rest during a recovery.
14:14 I went in the hot tub.
14:15 I used my massage gun.
14:17 And ultimately, when I woke up in the morning ready
14:20 and excited for my final attempt,
14:22 I stood up and realized it probably wasn't a good idea.
14:27 I feel so sore.
14:31 Like my whole body is destroyed.
14:34 I don't know how I'm going to do this.
14:39 So I canceled my training session with Yoshi,
14:41 rescheduling it for a few days in the future
14:43 for one more final attempt.
14:45 OK, good.
14:48 Dude, it's been a week in my abs.
14:52 In the span of 24 hours, she technically did the back flip.
14:55 I think she did the back flip.
14:56 But again, she's really ambitious
14:58 and wants it clean on the floor.
15:00 One more time, she'll get it.
15:03 Holy [bleep]
15:04 I barely touched you.
15:06 Are you serious?
15:07 I barely touched you.
15:09 OK, so I still didn't get the back flip.
15:11 But I'm going to keep trying.
15:12 I've already met with Yoshi a couple more times,
15:14 and I'm getting closer and closer.
15:16 And while I didn't land it to my standard
15:18 within the 24-hour period, I'm really, really happy
15:21 with how far I got.
15:22 We're going to keep meeting up, and I'm
15:24 going to see if I can finally do this by myself.
15:26 But I also recognize that that takes time and rest.
15:29 So right now, I'm going to go rest
15:31 before I try this all over again.
