00:00 Welcome to the Killer Frogs College football podcast, a fan nation show brought to you weekly by Killer Frogs.com.
00:07 I am Brett Gibbons and I'm once again joined by Tori Couch. Tori, thanks for coming back again.
00:12 And still talking about some TCU football. How are you?
00:15 I'm good. Last two weeks have been interesting, but that's what we're here to talk about.
00:23 Interesting is a nice way to put it. Yeah, I'm with you. We're going to talk about the last couple of games briefly off the top here, but we're also here to preview week seven against BYU.
00:34 Fascinating matchup, I think. Really fun matchup. We'll dive into all that.
00:38 But before we get into that game, I would like to start with the takeaways from the last two games.
00:43 I'm not the only one pressing the panic button. What level of panic are you at, if at all?
00:52 I'm starting to hit the panic button just a little bit. Defense hasn't been terrible.
00:58 The more you're on the field, the more tired you're going to get. You're going to give up points and stuff.
01:02 But the defense has been playing pretty well. Special teams, I have a lot of questions there.
01:08 It looked like they kind of had things figured out after the Houston game, and then you give up two blocked field goals against Virginia.
01:17 Something's off with special teams. And then, of course, offense Chandler Morris goes down with an MCL injury.
01:26 So you have Josh Hoover stepping in, and that's where I think I'm starting to hit the panic button just a little bit, because he's not played a lot of meaningful snaps.
01:36 And so, it's an unknown. You don't know how what he did in high school is going to translate.
01:43 Sure. I have a question on here about what kind of drop-off you believe there is from Chandler Morris to Josh Hoover.
01:49 But it kind of sounds like you're maybe on the fence about you're not entirely sure, and you'd like to see more of him in collegiate action.
01:55 I think there's going to be a drop-off. I don't see how there's not now.
02:01 That being said, teams can catch lightning in a bottle and things go great.
02:04 That first game with the new quarterback, we saw that in '21 with Chandler Morris, but that's not something I'm going to count on.
02:10 I think there's going to be a drop-off, because when you have a new quarterback who hasn't played with the first team, hasn't been practicing with them,
02:20 receivers are going to drop balls because they're not used to that speed or that delivery angle or whatever it might be from the quarterback.
02:26 I watched some of those highlights from the Iowa State game of Hoover, and he did a nice job in the pocket, dancing around, moving athletically, throwing on the run, things like that.
02:36 But he had a lot of first-read throws. Teams are going to try and figure out ways to take that away.
02:43 So how quickly can he read through his progressions and not just hook on to his first read and things like that,
02:50 I think is going to show how much this offense can do.
02:55 So I do think there's going to be a drop-off. How much, I don't know, but I do think there's going to be a drop-off.
03:01 And the special teams is a genuine concern. You have a preseason, all-Big 12, maybe even borderline All-American caliber, or so we thought, player in Griffin Cowlin.
03:11 I think the misses have a lot to do with the fact that he's had multiple kicks blocked, and now that's in your head.
03:17 And just like a baseball player or a golfer, when you get in your own head as a kicker, it's tough. It's a very, very tough thing.
03:27 We saw Brett Maher last year when the Cowboys missed six extra points in a row or something in the playoffs.
03:34 It's that kind of mentality that once you get rattled, it's really hard to turn around and change from that.
03:39 And the thing I think I'm most concerned about is even after the games have played out and looking at the final scores
03:45 and having watched the games front to back, those are still two games TCU should have won.
03:50 Even the level that they played, those were games that were winnable, that TCU had the ability to win, and they just didn't.
04:00 They look really undisciplined. We talked about it before we hit record here, that the penalties are bad.
04:08 It's just they're hurting themselves. They're currently beating themselves.
04:11 And when you look at point spreads and stuff, TCU's been favored in every game.
04:15 They've been favored by 12 points against West Virginia and 21 points, God forbid, against Colorado,
04:21 and they lost both those games outright. And that to me is concerning, that there is so much regression.
04:26 I knew that there would be regression. You lose the entire core of your national championship runner-up team.
04:33 I think I'm surprised by how much of regression there's been. What say you on that front?
04:40 Yeah, I kind of agree that the regression has been as much as it has been so far this season.
04:48 Kyle, I talked about earlier, defense looks pretty solid. They didn't have a huge step back.
04:53 The first game there was a little bit of confusion, but that seems to have worked itself out.
04:57 Offense is where I expected some regression. It's hard, because they lost a ton of NFL liberal receivers.
05:07 And you have Max Duggan, who is such an incredible leader. And I think that's one thing I've noticed
05:11 that this team hasn't quite found yet, is that emotional leader.
05:15 Now, not to say it's going to look exactly like what Max Duggan was last season,
05:20 but you have to have somebody who's going to step up and say, "I'm leading this team. I'm going to be that emotional person."
05:26 I just don't think this team necessarily has found that person.
05:30 And I think that's part of why there's this regression, because both West Virginia and Iowa State,
05:36 in the third quarters, were ugly on offense. Absolutely ugly.
05:41 So that says a lot about what's going on in the locker room at halftime, adjustment-wise,
05:47 and also just how the players wear their mindset at and things like that.
05:52 So that, for me, has been the biggest reason in my mind for the regression.
05:57 There's just not a leader that's just kind of stepped forward.
06:02 And that's a genuine concern moving forward, because guys, I know TCU's 3-3,
06:08 but they just walked through the easiest part of their schedule.
06:12 After BYU, we have at Kansas State, then a bye week at Texas Tech on a Thursday night, Lubbock.
06:18 That's never easy. Then Texas Baylor. I know Baylor's down in the Nata, Oklahoma.
06:22 I mean, the toughest is yet to come. And I worry about – I still have that 2021 team burning my mind,
06:29 but specifically the effort that I saw against West Virginia, or the lack thereof.
06:32 And that was when Patterson had lost the locker room, and there was not a lot of buy-in from those players.
06:37 And I worry – it's not going to be the point – like, Sonny Dyches isn't getting fired.
06:41 Don't hear what I'm not saying. But when you lose the locker room, you also lose the effort.
06:45 And I'm worried big time about maybe the last four or five games on the docket about maybe a drop off in effort.
06:52 I'm speculating, but there's not much reason to be super confident in your coaching staff at the moment.
07:00 And I think that's kind of where my head's at, at least, about this team.
07:05 Okay. Let's preview a game here. Let's be a little bit more optimistic and talk about this upcoming game.
07:11 TCU in Week 7 hosts BYU, a 4-1 BYU, mind you, 1-1 in conference.
07:18 Their lone loss coming to Kansas so far. These two teams have not played since 2011, when both teams were also in the Mountain West.
07:25 TCU leads the all-time series 6-5, and they've won the last four meetings.
07:29 The first meetings in '87 and '88, the teams split a home-and-home series, each home team winning those games.
07:35 And I talked to our editor, Barry Lewis, before the season, and we talked about the newcomers into the Big 12.
07:41 And I said, "Hey, what do you think one of the more surprising, exciting rivalries to butt from this is?"
07:45 And he said, "BYU-TCU." That there's a little bit of animosity between these two teams when they had their briefs then in the mid-2000s.
07:51 So I'm interested to see that, if that does come back.
07:54 Now, my biggest concern in the game is BYU's coming off their bye week.
07:58 They played Friday in Week 5, so they have a big rest advantage, even though TCU is at home.
08:03 I would also say BYU is over-performing expectations relative to their preseason.
08:09 They beat Arkansas on the road. I know Arkansas is not that great, but, you know, the 4-1 on the season.
08:14 You know, I apologize for that. And then they lost to Kansas next week on the road.
08:17 But they lost by, I think the margin was 14 points. They allowed two defensive touchdowns.
08:22 So there is a lot to be excited about.
08:25 What are your first initial thoughts and reactions about this BYU team?
08:30 They're going to surprise people, and they kind of have already this season.
08:37 Like you mentioned, the win on the road at Arkansas, not a great SEC team, but it's an SEC win.
08:43 You can't deny that.
08:45 And I know we're going to dive into the offense here a little bit, but their run game is not good.
08:48 And I think that's something that, as the season progresses, if that doesn't fix itself,
08:53 could prevent them from winning some games.
08:56 Because I think this is a team that has potential to make some noise in the Big 12.
09:01 Not to get to the Big 12 championship or anything like that, but win a handful of games,
09:06 four or five games, you know, kind of have a good first season.
09:10 So I think this is going to be a really good test for TCU,
09:14 especially given kind of what's happened the last couple of months, or excuse me, last couple of games.
09:19 But I think this is a good team with a lot of potential.
09:24 I agree. Surprising. Like I said, over-performing expectation.
09:28 You said that they could be a surprise contender in the Big 12, maybe not for the championship.
09:32 Because right now, objectively, the Big 12 is Texas and Oklahoma and then everybody else.
09:36 And it's a mess in between who's your third best team right now.
09:41 Kansas? West Virginia? Like who is that team?
09:47 Sure. Either one of them on any given Saturday.
09:50 And that's when we've done our power rankings for the site, that's the thing that I'm just like,
09:55 well, I know who the top two are and I know who's in my bottom four.
09:58 The rest of it's just, okay, how'd you play that week?
10:02 And so I think that's kind of what we're seeing right now.
10:05 And that's why I think BYU has a chance to kind of finish in the top half of the conference.
10:11 Yeah, let's size up this BYU offense and how we think they may fare against TCU's defense here.
10:16 Like you said, they're not a great running team. They're actually extremely inefficient.
10:19 It's been a major issue for them all season.
10:21 They're actually the second worst team in rushing efficiency in the nation.
10:25 Only 2.4 yards per carry as a team on the year. Not great.
10:29 Familiar face to those who are familiar with college football,
10:32 who've been keeping up with the sport the past few years.
10:35 Keaton Slobis is actually the quarterback here.
10:37 He has been at USC and Pitt had that breakout season as a freshman at USC.
10:41 He's been pretty decent too. Not great, not lighting the world on fire,
10:44 but he's thrown at least two touchdown passes in every game after week one.
10:48 He's got 1,240 yards, 10 touchdowns and three picks, but he is completing just 59% of his passes.
10:53 So like I said, not lighting the world on fire by any stretch.
10:56 The wide receiving core for BYU has been banged up all season.
10:59 Actually, this was an issue last year too.
11:01 I kind of have questions about their strength and conditioning team.
11:04 It's not great. They deal with injuries a lot.
11:06 Cody Epps, one of their starting wide receivers, they're hoping to get him back.
11:09 He's been in and out of the lineup all year.
11:11 Chase Roberts has been the go-to.
11:13 Chase Roberts spent a ton of time injured last year as well.
11:16 But it's good to see him there. He is the dominant wide receiver on this core.
11:19 BYU, I think overall, is disciplined.
11:22 They don't have a lot of penalty yards and they don't have a lot of turnovers.
11:25 And that to me is a little bit worrisome when you're dealing with TCU,
11:28 who has just been a self-inflicted wound team all year long.
11:32 Now, like you said, Chandler Morris is out.
11:34 We know that. Whether he's out for the season, TBD, doesn't sound like it,
11:39 but multiple weeks, we won't see him for a little while.
11:42 Who then needs to step up in Morris' absence, other than Josh Hoover?
11:46 Because that's the obvious, you know, he's literally stepping in to fill for him.
11:49 But who else do you think on this offense needs to step up to help him out?
11:53 I'm going to look at the offensive line.
11:55 They've had some great moments.
11:58 They've opened up some good holes for Amani Bailey at the running back position.
12:02 And they've done a decent job protecting Morris.
12:04 But I think that's where I'm going to look first is,
12:07 what is that pocket that Hoover is in?
12:10 Is he having to run around a lot or can he stand in the pocket,
12:13 take time to make some throws?
12:15 So I'm looking at that offensive line because I think that's going to dictate
12:19 a lot of what the offense is able to do with a new quarterback.
12:22 Yeah, and I mean, to be honest,
12:24 because we haven't seen a lot of Josh Hoover in collegiate action,
12:27 I don't know how he'll fare under pressure,
12:29 but just from a bias or a baseline knowledge that like new quarterbacks coming in,
12:35 especially if they haven't even played at the Division I college level before,
12:39 besides practice, when you get pressure on them, bad things happen.
12:42 And I can't say that that'll be the case with Hoover.
12:45 I don't know, but I don't think he's as capable and as mobile as Chandler Morris
12:49 or even Max Duggan from last year.
12:51 So yeah, I think I agree with you.
12:53 I think we need to keep him clean here.
12:55 Do you have any confidence behind Hoover in the quarterback room,
12:58 say, God forbid he goes out with an injury or like,
13:00 it's really just not working out.
13:02 Is there anybody else that can even step in and play quarterback right now?
13:07 Looking at the dev chart,
13:10 there's not a ton of things that inspire confidence there just because if you
13:14 look at the bios for most of the quarterbacks, it's snapper to here,
13:17 snapper to there, first year in college, things like that.
13:20 So there's not much experience behind him.
13:24 So that, I don't have a ton of confidence in the quarterback room,
13:29 but that's where you kind of have to trust the coaches that they've recruited
13:35 well enough to bring in guys who are going to come in and step up when those
13:39 moments are needed.
13:41 So I have pretty low confidence in the quarterback room right now,
13:45 just because it's a lot of unknowns.
13:47 Boy, I'll tell you what chance Nolan would have been nice to have back there.
13:51 That's the shame to see him not carry with the team.
13:54 But yeah, I think I'm with you.
13:56 Now there's no safety net.
13:58 I don't know how much of a safety net Hoover is in general.
14:01 Again, I'm trying to reserve judgment from the very few snaps we've seen.
14:05 There had been some loads.
14:07 I don't think it's been all bad,
14:09 but there's definitely been some lows that concern me, but I'm still,
14:13 I'd like to reserve my judgment, be reactionary rather than reactive.
14:18 Yeah.
14:20 So on the other side, TCU is offense.
14:22 Since we kind of slid into that anyway, but without it against BYU is defense.
14:28 Look, my biggest question of course,
14:30 is how is the offense operate even around him with the new quarterback?
14:33 How do they respond to adversity,
14:35 especially coming off of back-to-back disappointing losses in my opinion,
14:39 it just needs to be better play calling offensively again.
14:42 It's just been an issue.
14:43 It's another game that has short yardage issues with play calling like a full
14:48 on disaster.
14:49 The short yardage situations have been all year case in point.
14:52 Imani Bailey.
14:54 I think he's been the best offensive weapon on TC.
14:56 You might even be the best player currently on TCU,
14:58 or at least playing the best football in TCU.
15:00 He had 21 rushes, 152 yards and no touchdowns.
15:05 And I'm like, how could that be?
15:07 Go back and look.
15:08 Oh,
15:09 every time they get around the goal line or inside the 10 yard line,
15:12 all of a sudden it's past central throwing up those awful goal line.
15:15 I hate calling fades.
15:16 Good Lord.
15:17 If you don't have a guy who's six, five on a guy who's five,
15:19 10 don't call them.
15:20 It sets football back,
15:22 but both scores for TCU against Iowa state were throws inside the 10 yard
15:27 line.
15:28 And that leads me to believe what like question,
15:30 why Bailey's gone for 7.2, a carry.
15:32 Why aren't you handing it off to him more?
15:34 And I know that those are touchdowns and scores are good,
15:37 but that's a trend to me.
15:39 And that is a trend that when we get inside the red zone or the green
15:42 zone, the 10 yard line is,
15:44 is Briles loves to take the ball out of his running backs,
15:46 hands out of his best player's hands and throw it.
15:48 Does he do that again this week?
15:50 Seemed like it.
15:51 Cause he did it with Josh.
15:52 We were last week.
15:53 That's my weekly mini tirade on the play calling.
15:56 It has not improved.
15:57 And also TCU as a team,
15:59 this isn't all play calling's fault,
16:00 but a four combined interceptions against Iowa state and a BYU is defensive.
16:05 All you remember from them is what you saw last year.
16:08 I got news for you.
16:09 There are significantly improved.
16:12 They hired Weber state head coach,
16:14 Jay Hill is your defensive coordinator and he's changed the scheme around.
16:17 And BYU has gone from one of the handful,
16:20 maybe the two or three worst defenses in the country to one of the more
16:24 dependable in the big 12 this year.
16:26 The turnaround has just been night and day.
16:28 What confidence level do you have that TCU can reverse the momentum,
16:32 play a clean game and score on the significantly improved BYU defense?
16:37 It's that high.
16:42 It kind of like you were saying earlier,
16:45 I don't want to pass judgment on Josh.
16:48 I don't want to make any big proclamations before I see more until I see
16:52 him, you know, be the designated star, have a week of practice,
16:55 have a little bit more time and see him go up against the defense is
16:59 prepared for him.
17:00 Cause that's, that's one kind of benefit that he's had coming into that
17:04 game against Iowa state was they weren't prepared for him.
17:07 So he was able to maybe do some things that he wouldn't have been
17:10 otherwise been able to do. So.
17:12 My confidence is low just because.
17:14 It's just a lot of unknowns.
17:16 I would, I would imagine there's going to be a lot of short passes,
17:19 a lot of quick little dumps out.
17:21 Out towards the sideline.
17:22 And I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:24 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:26 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:28 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:30 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:32 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:34 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:35 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:37 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:38 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:40 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:41 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:42 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:43 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:44 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
17:45 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:09 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:15 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:16 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:17 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:18 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:19 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:20 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:21 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:22 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:23 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:24 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:25 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:26 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:27 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:53 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:56 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:57 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:58 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
18:59 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:00 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:01 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:02 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:03 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:04 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:05 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:06 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:07 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:08 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:36 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:39 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:40 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:41 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:42 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:43 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:44 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:45 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:46 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:47 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:48 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:49 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:50 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
19:51 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:19 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:24 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:25 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:26 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:27 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:28 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:29 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:30 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:31 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:32 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:33 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.
20:34 I think that's going to be a big part of the game.

22:24 been really, really improved over the first two games. They've been averaging 27 points per game versus just 20 total in the first two. Um, but I'm going Cincinnati. Nipper. It's a very difficult place to play. Very underrated. Hard place play TC will find that out. One of these days. Going in and nipper stadium, it's loud traps. The noise in the fans are right on top of you like it's a cool place to see a football game. I'll go Cincinnati on that one. Why not Oregon at Washington?
22:53 I'm going to go with Washington because it is it's in Seattle. But this is another one that I think it's going to be some blast. So watch it. You have two very high powered offices, two quarterbacks that you know, they're looking at as NFL prospects and they're, they're fine.
23:11 I don't know Sanders both sides have some good defensive players as well who can make plays. So I'm going to give Washington edge just because the home field. Yeah, I'm with you, Washington Husky Husky Stadium, very, very difficult place to play. I know Oregon's used to it because they have that rivalry. But yeah, give me Washington. I think they have the better quarterback and more dangerous pass catchers. Another marquee game USC at Notre Dame.
23:36 It's a little bit trickier because I Notre Dame's did not play well this past weekend against Louisville.
23:43 USC has struggled the last couple weeks against Colorado and Arizona State. Almost, almost lost Arizona. Yeah, triple overtime. I mean, gosh, it's.
23:57 I guess this is one where I'm going to go with the home team just because they're going to have a little bit more momentum will not have the travel and all that kind of stuff. But I do not feel good about this pictures because neither team is really playing at their peak right now.
24:11 Yeah, I think another thing that that helps Notre Dame for your pick here is there's me 3035 on our wingus and that's a team that can hand the ball off and run the daylights out of it.
24:21 I'm going to go with USC on the road. I Notre Dame. Their athletic director Jack Swarbrick did it did them absolutely dirty with the scheduling this year they went to Ireland and came back and then they had Ohio State at Duke with college game day at Louisville who's on a tear.
24:38 And then USC right in a row no bi weeks, they're playing 11 consecutive games.
24:57 And then this fascinating game, this game I think defines the landscape of the Mountain West for you real college football geeks out there like me and Tori. This is a great get one of my favorite games of the week, Wyoming and Air Force.
25:11 I'm going to pick Wyoming, they have looked really good they got the win over tech, they have another non conference that they owe Texas, they look pretty good against Texas even though they lost like Wyoming has something rolling there.
25:26 Air Force is always tough. They're always a tough place to play.
25:31 I'm going to go with Wyoming here.
25:34 I'm going to go there for us we're going to be very right on this podcast between two us we're going to be exceptionally right about at least three of these four games here, I take an opposite I don't think we disagree this often I like Air Force at home, tough team runs the daylights out of football
25:47 Wyoming also tough team. But again, they're on the road.
25:51 I think they should be ranked right now that the fact that there's lone loss on the season is to what was number three Texas now number nine Texas or whatever they're at pretty good.
26:01 And like you said they looked pretty good. I think Air Force is the best team in the group of five right now.
26:06 So I'm gonna take Air Force at home.
26:08 Wow, we are in Washington. We're going head to head today. We almost went head to head on the TCU game too because I almost picked TCU.
