00:00 Hello and welcome to the Society for Equestrian Artists Horse in Art annual exhibition here at Tenants.
00:07 I'm the current chair of the Society and I live locally in Coverdale.
00:12 It gives me great pleasure to bring this exhibition up here to Yorkshire.
00:16 I'm a Yorkshire lass born and bred and we've never, actually the Society has never had an exhibition up here before.
00:23 Normally we're down at the Mall Galleries or Christie's in London or Newmarket Palace House
00:28 so it's a real joy for me to bring it up here.
00:31 We have 40 plus artists on display here, the work of 40 plus artists.
00:36 This is my work. We have sculptures.
00:39 Our private view was on Monday evening and we had a really good attendance.
00:44 Lots of awards were given out and I think most people went away very happy.
00:49 A little bit of background about the Society.
00:52 We were formed 44 years ago by John Morris and a group of notable artists including Sir Terence Cuneo
00:59 who was famous for his train paintings in particular, Tom Coates, Norman Hode and Neil Cawthorn
01:07 who many people will recognise his name from his equestrian paintings.
01:13 The emphasis has always been on study of equestrian art and promotion of equestrian excellence in painting.
01:24 This particular painting I did the studies for actually at a workshop that we held up here in Midlam.
01:32 It's actually a Mark Johnston string coming up the road to the Lower Moor Gallops.
01:38 I took photographs and I made sketches and we actually then went up to Carlton Village Hall
01:46 to do a two day workshop with an abstract artist named Leslie Humphrey who'd come over from America.
01:54 We learned her abstraction techniques and it was very interesting and great fun.
01:59 This donkey picture is by honorary member Glynis Mills.
02:03 It's called Second String and it's from a series of paintings she did called Delusions of Grandeur.
02:09 As you can see the donkeys are tethered on the beach waiting to give the rides to the children no doubt
02:14 but they're sort of looking over their shoulder wishing they were galloping with the race horses in training.
02:20 I have a feeling that some of them think well I could do that if I needed to.
02:25 In this particular painting I drew my inspiration from simply driving along the road you can see in the painting.
02:33 I live very close by and these horses happen to be up in the field at rest and I just thought what a lovely peaceful scene.
02:41 I took a few photographs, did a few sketches.
02:45 I actually did arrange the horses myself.
02:48 I used my own artistic license because they were obviously lying in a different position.
02:55 I just love the coverdale and the peacefulness of the scene and the slightly stormy sky.
03:02 These horses are actually trained with Jed O'Keefe.
03:06 This is the work of Amy Goodman.
03:09 She's a full member of the Society.
03:12 She's very well known for doing the War Horse Memorial.
03:16 I believe she's recently just done statues of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard down in Dartford.
03:23 This sculpture features a horse during the Piaf.
03:26 It's by a new member to our Society, Zoe Carmichael.
03:30 It's a bronze.
03:32 It truly is a beautiful sculpture.
03:35 Everything is correct as far as I can see when I have a reasonable eye.
03:40 We're very pleased to have it on display here.
03:44 The exhibition is on until 28 October.
03:47 It's free to enter.
03:50 Here at Tenants there's a wonderful cafe, bistro, gift shop and so on so you can make a day of it.
03:56 Of course you've got Midlam a couple of miles away.
03:59 You can have a look at the horses training on the gallops if you arrive early enough.
04:02 So there's a lot to go out.
