00:00 Some companies in the country remain in a remote work or hybrid work setup.
00:05 This is the setup that we call work from home.
00:08 In a LinkedIn survey, out of 2,215 respondents, 55% believe that their remote work is more effective than their work.
00:17 In Jobstreet's study, 52% of Filipino workers have been working from home for years now.
00:23 And with the pandemic, 85% of the flexible work arrangements in their companies have increased.
00:30 The truth is, there is also an advantage in the work from home setup.
00:34 That is if the workspace is conducive to home to work.
00:37 But what if there are a lot of distractions?
00:40 Thank you.
00:45 If in a coffee shop, you have to order your latte so you have space to work,
00:51 why don't you try the co-working spaces that are popular here?
00:55 Space is what you pay for.
00:57 But coffee?
00:58 Free.
01:00 In the co-working space, various professionals from various industries are working together in a shared space or neutral space.
01:10 It's like being in a traditional office setup, but if you're with someone, you won't have a job.
01:15 As the economy slowly opens up, co-working spaces or shared spaces are also gradually emerging,
01:23 especially in Metro Manila.
01:26 The good thing about this is that you can choose a lot that suits your preference or personality.
01:33 That's why we went to some of these co-working spaces and found out what they can offer.
01:44 Cozy.
01:45 Vibrant vibes.
01:48 In a friendly working environment, who wouldn't want to work in a workplace like this?
01:56 It has its own pantry, free overflowing coffee, and high-speed internet connection.
02:01 That's why this co-working space in Ortigas, Pasig City is chosen by some hybrid workers and freelancers.
02:08 Because of the pandemic, Jess's setup became hybrid with the company she works for.
02:12 And because she's in the marketing industry, it became easier for her to transition their work setup with the help of a co-working space.
02:19 A co-working space and traditional offices, they both have their pros and cons.
02:25 Sometimes it would be good to be together with your co-workers and collaborate with them.
02:30 Being in a co-working space is also like a respite for you to just do things on your own.
02:36 So it's not necessarily that you miss working in a traditional office or you prefer being in a co-working space.
02:43 I guess it sometimes just goes hand in hand.
02:46 But like some, Jess started working from home.
02:50 But it didn't become easy.
02:53 I guess the thing with working at home or having a home office is sometimes you no longer have the divide of home and work.
03:02 So I think that kind of setup sometimes can be a little bit toxic.
03:08 In this co-working space, for P250, which is almost the same price as the coffee you ordered, you can start your work here.
03:16 Just bring yourself, bring your computer, and we do the rest.
03:20 So you come in, you're greeted by our competent, friendly community center associates and managers.
03:27 You come in, you pick your seat.
03:30 Because of the increasing hybrid work arrangements, and there's also the rise of freelancers or what we call the gig economy,
03:39 it really helped stir the demand for co-working spaces in Metro Manila and actually even outside Metro Manila.
03:47 If you have important phone calls or online meetings, you can use their phone booth that is isolated to avoid distraction.
03:54 They also have a meeting room, town hall that can cater for 40 individuals,
03:59 and if you're looking for a private office, they also have that.
04:02 But where and how did the co-working space start?
04:06 In 1995, it is said that the first co-working space was established by the Hacker company in Berlin.
04:12 In that year, the word co-working space was first used by Bernard de Coven who described it as working together as equals.
04:20 Fast forward to 2006, where the co-working wiki space opened in San Francisco.
04:26 And one of its founders, Chris Mezina, created the Twitter hashtag.
04:30 In 2007, the word co-working was first seen in the Google database.
04:34 In 2010, the first hashtag was created, #CoworkingSpaceDay.
04:40 And as the years went by, the number of co-working spaces around the world increased.
04:45 But here in the Philippines, several co-working space businesses opened before the pandemic.
04:51 Just like this co-working space in Quezon City, aside from the hybrid worker and the professional,
04:56 students and professional students also use masks.
05:01 Just like Chris, a student doctor, who has been renting a shared space for almost 3 months.
05:07 Well, ever since the start of COVID or the pandemic, teleconsultation became popular.
05:15 It's more conducive.
05:17 I can receive consultations online and it's not distracting to my patients.
05:22 Another thing that Chris liked here was the student-friendly ambience.
05:26 The vibes to work is very motivating.
05:28 It's also open 24 hours a week.
05:31 There are also free refreshments and snacks.
05:33 And if you have a parcel but you don't have one at home, they can also receive delivery for you.
05:39 And since this co-working space is open 24 hours, the security they provide is also tight.
05:46 I can see the potential of this co-working space.
05:49 Because even for us as a healthcare professional, we also have satellite work.
05:54 So the opportunity is great.
05:56 So that's also an opportunity for the co-working space to evolve.
06:00 It's not too corporate.
06:06 Of course, what we want to distance is that you're in a traditional office.
06:11 So as you can see, we have this very, very cozy and relaxing minimalist theme.
06:18 Even startup companies or businesses that are just starting out and the resources are limited,
06:24 they are welcome here.
06:26 You can communicate with other people, share your ideas.
06:30 I think the productivity is increasing.
06:34 And of course, the opportunities are really many.
06:39 In Makati City, we went to a co-working space.
06:42 It is part of the amenities of a hotel and their guests use it for free.
06:47 Most of the guests of this hotel are working while traveling foreigners or if you call them, digital nomads.
06:54 This is where I met Ollie, an American copywriter.
06:57 Ollie's story is based in Thailand at the moment.
07:01 But he has been traveling around the Asian countries for almost 8 years,
07:04 just like here in the Philippines.
07:06 He is very aero in the setup of his work because he will travel at the same time.
07:10 Everywhere I travel, I try to find places that have a work space like this, co-working space.
07:15 Because at a cafe, you feel bad if you have one coffee and it's a limited space.
07:22 If you're there for four hours, you feel like I bought one coffee.
07:25 I'm taking up too much space here and there's customers coming in and out.
07:29 A place like this, plenty of space for everybody.
07:32 No pressure. You can stay as long as you want.
07:34 You can work as long as you want.
07:35 For a tourist like him, amenities are a big part of his accommodation.
07:40 Because he saved time, budget, and he knows he can do his work well and comfortably.
07:47 It's a great opportunity. A space like this especially where there's plenty of desks
07:51 and there's plenty of space where you can get away from other people.
07:55 I think the balance between having privacy when you need it for work and things like that,
08:00 but also having a social space is perfect.
08:03 They also have a Skype room if there's an online meeting.
08:06 There are conference rooms for group meetings.
08:08 And if you think you need to relax, the bar is just next to it.
08:12 So you can order food and drinks, play in their gaming corner, and unwind in their cool-down area.
08:18 We decided to integrate co-working spaces and amenities into our services.
08:23 We realized that in this digital age, people are not just looking for a place to stay,
08:30 but a multifunctional space where they can work, connect, and collaborate seamlessly.
08:37 So by incorporating co-working space, we are not just enhancing the customer experience,
08:44 but we are creating a lively environment where travelers and professionals can connect,
08:50 share ideas, and inspire each other.
08:54 We created the co-working space with the needs of diverse groups of individuals in mind.
09:01 Primarily, we are focusing on the digital nomads who love to combine their work commitments with the joy of traveling.
09:11 Essentially, we aim to target anyone who's seeking for a flexible and dynamic workspace
09:17 that encourages collaboration and innovation.
09:21 According to LinkedIn, some of the advantages of co-working spaces are
09:25 flexibility where you don't need to sign a long-term lease or rent,
09:29 getting outside your home because it's good to go to a place with a positive environment,
09:36 motivation, it's more motivating to work in a place full of given people,
09:41 networking, or having a new acquaintance, you can start a new opportunity,
09:46 and lastly, community or feeling the unity or similarity of desire.
09:52 The pandemic has also brought a good result if we look at the current situation of some of our employees.
10:01 Here, we learned that we can still do our work responsibly and do other productive things through co-working space.
10:12 Is this the future of work?
10:14 I am Zeya Mencinas, a Stanford student.
