00:02 - My name is Melina Valdez,
00:08 and I am the writer director of "Weapons and Their Names"
00:12 that will be premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
00:15 My family and I immigrated from Uruguay to Florida
00:17 when I was young, and anyone who knows Florida
00:20 knows that it is a very particular place.
00:23 There is a specific feeling that comes with
00:27 growing up in such a swampy and strange environment,
00:31 and I really try to capture that feeling in all of my work,
00:34 but specifically in "Weapons and Their Names."
00:37 This film is about a young Latina named Luciana
00:39 who is unable to connect with her family
00:41 after the sudden death of her stepfather.
00:43 In order to escape the stress at home,
00:46 she sneaks off with her best friend, Mickey,
00:49 to shoot guns in the woods.
00:51 Then Luciana finds herself alone in nature,
00:55 finally able to make space for her grief.
00:57 This film explores loss, mother-daughter relationships,
01:01 and cultural differences through a magical, realist lens.
01:06 I have put everything on the line
01:07 to make "Weapons and Their Names."
01:09 My team and I, we are so excited and grateful
01:12 to be part of the Sundance community.
01:14 Thank you so much.
01:16 We hope this film speaks to you.
