01:09 Israel has fought many wars against its Arab neighbors,
01:12 but it has never experienced anything like this,
01:14 where Palestinians have actually come into Israel proper
01:18 and committed such widespread attacks.
01:21 -Hamas says it is dedicated to building
01:24 an independent Palestinian state.
01:26 The group controls the Gaza Strip,
01:28 a densely populated Palestinian enclave that, for years,
01:33 has been under Israeli blockade.
01:35 The last major conflict between Hamas and Israel was in 2021,
01:40 in which more than 250 people in Gaza and 14 in Israel
01:45 were killed.
01:46 The attacks only stopped after 11 days,
01:49 when Egypt brokered a ceasefire.
01:51 -It's most interesting is that, in recent months,
01:54 I would say that Israel has actually described Hamas
01:57 as being somewhat more reasonable
02:00 and more of a partner
02:01 than some other elements within Palestinian society.
02:04 And so it seems that whatever Hamas was --
02:07 whatever message they were sending to the Israelis,
02:09 it was very clearly deception.
02:12 -Saturday's attack holds deep significance for Israel,
02:16 as the country has just marked 50 years
02:18 after the Yom Kippur War.
02:21 -It was October 6th, which is an attack
02:23 that was launched against Israel by Syria, Egypt,
02:26 and several other Arab countries,
02:28 and in which Israel was completely unprepared,
02:31 had a very similar experience.
02:32 They were caught off guard.
02:35 -Though caught by surprise, Israeli soldiers
02:37 fought Saturday evening to regain control
02:40 and expel militants from local towns and villages.
02:43 -Hamas started a brutal and brutal war.
02:48 We will win this war,
02:51 but the price is heavy.
02:54 -Rockets fired from Gaza lit up the sky Saturday night.
02:58 Israeli forces used their Iron Dome air defense
03:01 to intercept and destroy the rockets.
