00:06 to once again win a medal in the Paris Olympics.
00:10 Rafael Bandayreal of PTV Sports is the story.
00:12 It was a warm welcome to the world number two pole vaulter
00:20 and Asian Games gold medalist EJ Obiena
00:23 when he returned to his alma mater, Changkai Check High School in Tondo, Manila.
00:27 Here, the 27-year-old athlete received a warm welcome and applause.
00:34 But that's not all.
00:35 As a support for his upcoming campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics,
00:40 he donated P3 million for the so-called education.
00:44 P5 million was given by the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce
00:48 while P1 million was given by businessmen Anson Tan and Carlos Chan
00:54 for a total of P10 million.
00:57 This amount will be used for Obiena's preparation for the Olympics.
01:02 Even though he was still fresh from his successful retirement,
01:05 Obiena did not deny that he was thinking of getting back in the Olympics.
01:11 This was after his amazing performance in Tokyo in 2021
01:16 where he finished 11th.
01:19 Until here, it felt like I failed the Filipino people in 2021.
01:23 I didn't came there to sightsee and watch the other guys outbold me.
01:28 I came there to win a medal.
01:30 Unfortunately, I was not able to do it.
01:32 Therefore, I decided I want to go another four-year cycle.
01:35 The commitment that I have, the promise that I have to the Filipino people is until 2024.
01:41 So I would hope that I'd be able to fulfill what I came out to do
01:45 and be able to do what I can.
01:47 Obiena is now planning to compete in five more competitions before joining Paris 2024.
01:53 He is still determined. He feels that he has the momentum to finish his gold medal win.
01:59 I don't really...
02:01 It doesn't really change.
02:03 I want to win there.
02:05 It's not that I'm not thankful.
02:07 It's just, it means that it doesn't matter what happens.
02:10 I'm going to go and give it my all.
02:12 This just empowers me to be able to do what is necessary
02:16 and be able to maximize the time that I have.
02:18 Even though he will only arrive in the country on October 15,
02:22 Obiena will be pushing towards Europe.
02:25 He will be preparing and practicing for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
02:30 Rafael Bandayrel, for the country.
