00:12 The Indian Army is actively involving evacuation efforts, providing food, medical aid and communication
00:18 facilities to civilians and tourists stranded in North Sikkim.
00:22 A total of 2011 people have been rescued so far.
00:27 At least 19 people including 4 soldiers have lost their lives and over 100 are still missing.
00:32 The injured, numbering 26, are receiving treatment.
00:35 The Sikkim Disaster Management Authority estimates 22,034 people have been affected.
00:42 The Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army has accounted for 1,471 tourists in the affected
00:47 areas.
00:48 Plans for the evacuation via helicopters are underway with collaboration between the
00:52 state government, Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
00:56 Survey teams are assessing the damage to plan the restoration of road connectivity.
01:01 The Singtham-Burdang road link has been partially restored, allowing for single-lane vehicular
01:06 traffic.
01:07 Chungthang town has experienced extensive damage with machinery engaged to clear the
01:13 slush.
01:14 While no casualties are reported, property damage is significant.
01:18 The weather conditions are hindering rescue operations, necessitating a team to reach
01:22 Chungthang on foot.
01:23 "We were able to establish contact with Chungthang last night.
01:28 What we came to know is the entire town is full of slush.
01:31 So they have engaged the machinery to clear the town.
01:33 So far there is no report of anyone missing from the Chungthang town, but the damage has
01:37 been extensive.
01:38 The entire people have been shifted to the Bob area.
01:41 We have established a relief camp.
01:42 They are there.
01:43 Today we were supposed to take a helicopter right to the Larchung and come down to the
01:48 Chungthang.
01:49 Because of the weather condition, the helicopter may not come.
01:52 So what we have decided is that we are sending a team on foot.
01:56 We are now walking up to Janggu, across the Blingbong bridge and they will go to Janggu.
02:01 From Janggu up to Pegam, it is reported the roads are open.
02:06 So we will till the point where the vehicle goes, they will go.
02:10 Then they will walk and by any means one team will reach Chungthang today and we will assess
02:15 the actual situation."
02:17 State authorities reported about 3,000 people stranded in Lachen and Larchung, including
02:23 drivers and motorcycle riders.
02:25 Evacuation plans involve Army and Air Force helicopters, prioritising those in immediate
02:30 need, especially the elderly and the children.
02:33 "The rough assessment available from our checkpost data, about 3,000 tourists are stranded
02:42 in Lachen and Larchung and there are about 700-800 drivers whose vehicles have gone somewhere.
02:50 Of those, about 150 people have gone on motorcycles, which are also in their adventure.
03:00 As I told you, we will evacuate everyone through Army and Air Force helicopters.
03:09 I would like to give one more piece of information that the people in Lachen and Larchung, the
03:16 Army has now made their communication link available, voice over internet, through which
03:21 they have made their family members talk to them, which has given their family members
03:27 information about their skills."
03:31 Airlifting operations, crucial for immediate medical assistance and evacuation, depend
03:35 on weather conditions, poor visibility and precipitation have delayed helicopter deployments.
03:41 This evolving situation highlights the urgent need for collaborative efforts to mitigate
03:46 the impact of flash floods, provide humanitarian aid and enhance disaster resilience in the
03:51 region.
