00:00 Selena Gomez gets emotional reflecting on fans who say her documentary saved their lives.
00:07 "Strength is looked upon as, 'Oh, I'm strong.
00:09 I don't need anything.
00:10 I can handle everything.'
00:11 And that's just not the truth."
00:13 Sel opens up to Fast Company about her 2022 documentary My Mind and Me, where the singer
00:20 addressed her battle with mental health.
00:22 "I found out I have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
00:26 I'm going to be honest.
00:27 I didn't want to go to a mental health hospital, but I didn't want to be trapped in myself
00:34 and my mind anymore.
00:35 I thought my life was over.
00:36 I was like, 'This is how I'm going to be forever.'"
00:40 "She was in recovery herself, but she wanted really to help other people.
00:46 That meant having to share some of the private moments of her life.
00:51 She says, 'I want you to film this.
00:54 Film the pain.'"
00:55 Now, the Only Murders in the Building star recalls some of the more raw encounters she's
01:00 had with fans since sharing her story with the world.
01:03 Quote, "It breaks my heart to hear a girl come up to me and say, 'I was so close to
01:08 taking my life.'
01:10 But when I watched your documentary, I couldn't imagine doing that anymore."
01:14 "I think kids, especially with social media sometimes, they just feel a little claustrophobic,
01:19 and I don't think their voice is actually being heard.
01:21 I want people to know that every single life is valuable, that their voice can be heard."
01:27 The article says at that point in the interview, Sel breaks down in tears, explaining that
01:32 while it's the coolest gift, it's crazy to have that responsibility.
01:36 "I'm very lucky that I have the platform I have, but on social media, as much as it's
01:41 a blessing and it's fun, it can really tear people down."
01:45 Back in 2016, Selena made headlines when her revival tour was abruptly canceled after 55
01:51 performances, and she was hospitalized to focus on her mental health.
01:56 "To be sharing something honest and saying, 'Hey, I'm taking a break because I need it,'
02:00 I'm being honest, and I think that's just who I am."
02:03 Fans got a little more insight into what was really going down in her documentary.
02:08 "At one point, she's like, 'I don't want to be alive right now.'
02:11 It was one of those moments where you look in her eyes and there's nothing there.
02:15 You're like, 'Okay, f--- this.
02:17 This needs to end.
02:18 We need to go home.'"
02:19 "I just remember it being very chaotic, and she was hearing all of these voices.
02:23 They just kept getting louder and louder and louder.
02:27 That triggered some sort of psychotic break."
02:30 "I was scared she was going to die."
02:32 "I feel like it's a time capsule of a period of my life where I look back and I actually
02:39 feel bad for that version of myself.
02:43 And I think that it was good for me to see how I was responding to my body, the way I
02:49 was acting, the way it was so irrational at moments.
02:52 And I think it was really healing for me to see that and get it out."
02:56 In her doc, Selena says she needed to go through all that to be who she is today.
03:01 "She's not just an advocate for mental health.
03:05 She's not just a pop star.
03:07 She's also a woman dealing daily with her own kind of challenges and trying to be a
03:14 good person through all of it."
03:16 And she tells Fast Company why her fans, who have stood by her side through it all, mean
03:21 everything to her.
03:22 "In a lot of ways, they've held me responsible.
03:26 And I don't mean that in a bad way.
03:27 I think I mean it in a sweet way.
03:28 I want to be the best, but I never wanted to be this unattainable creature.
03:34 I wanted to be someone that every girl could hang out with and want to chill with, because
03:40 I'm not any different than any of them.
03:42 So it brings me so much joy to meet my fans whenever I can."
03:46 "I'm so happy to be here."
03:47 (gentle music)
03:50 you
