England's Jos Buttler on their humiliating 9 wicket defeat to New Zealand in ICC Cricket World Cup opener
Transcript
00:00 Hi Josh, it feels like it's been a long time since England have suffered a defeat of that
00:07 sort of magnitude, how does it feel to be on the end of that?
00:10 Yeah disappointed, completely outplayed but the first thing that springs to mind is whether
00:19 you do lose by a run or a defeat like that it is one loss at the start of a very long
00:24 tournament so I think that's what we'll be encouraging everyone to remember.
00:30 It's certainly a tough loss to take, we were outplayed but we've got a lot of experience
00:35 in the room guys who've been through lots of things and faced defeats like that before
00:41 so just as if we had won the game we don't get too high and we don't get too low when
00:47 we lose as well.
00:49 Clearly the two Kiwi guys played exceptional innings, is there anything in the way you
00:53 went about your business today that you would choose to do differently?
00:58 Yeah I think we were short of runs with the bat, I think the wicket probably did get better
01:04 under the lights but I think we were a long way short of our best with the bat and still
01:09 made 280 so you're probably looking at a score of 320, 330 which would have allowed us to
01:16 build some kind of pressure and stuff but I thought the margin for error was very small
01:20 on that wicket and two batters who played exceptional innings.
01:26 Hi Joss, I just wondered does that performance and that defeat underline what a key part
01:32 of that squad, that team Ben Stokes is?
01:36 No not at all, I think Ben's a top player but we've got many top players, I think everyone
01:44 in the team got into double figures today and we didn't have enough guys go on and make
01:49 telling contributions, it's not just Ben who is able to score runs in our team, we've got
01:54 brilliant players from right throughout the squad so we had a lot of starts, I thought
02:00 we were just a bit off in our execution, we weren't quite clinical enough with our shot
02:04 making and gifted New Zealand a few wickets and as I just mentioned we were a long way
02:09 short of our best and still made 280 which shows the level that we can play at.
02:13 Are you confident that you guys can turn it around and put in a performance that's more
02:18 like the real England we've come to know and love over the past eight years or so in that
02:23 next game?
02:24 Yeah.
02:25 What do you need to do to do that?
02:26 Play better.
02:27 Have you got any idea where that performance did come from, you say that you were just
02:37 a bit short of runs, maybe gifted some wickets, mistakes happen of course they do but does
02:43 that level of performance surprise you at all?
02:46 No, we're not robots, sometimes you don't play as well as you would like, everyone's
02:52 working hard, everyone's prepared well and as I said we're just a bit off, in international
02:58 cricket when you're a little bit short and the opposition play very well you're going
03:02 to lose the game of cricket so there's plenty of stuff for us to work on and get better
03:08 at the start of a long tournament, as I said it's one loss, it's a tough one but we'll
03:13 be better for the next one.
03:14 We've all seen Devon Conway's attacking style of batting, but did Ravindra's style catch
03:28 you by surprise?
03:29 No, not really, we played against him recently and he got some runs at Lord's and played
03:35 really well and obviously in the warm-up game at Hyderabad I think he opened the batting
03:40 or batted three and played really well as well so I think the two guys if I look back
03:46 it wasn't like they were playing outrageous shots or scooping it over the keeper's head,
03:51 they played excellent cricket shots and got fantastic value on that pitch, I thought it
03:57 was a fantastic batting wicket, the margin felt very small for the bowlers and if you're
04:02 a little bit off they put you away so I thought those two guys played really, really well
04:06 and put together obviously a quite incredible partnership.
04:09 Just a subset of that same question about the wicket, did it change at all under the
04:17 lights, was it coming on a bit better you felt?
04:19 Yeah, I think the wicket got better, we were looking to bowl first as well if we won the
04:24 toss with the thought that it would play better under the lights but I still think it was
04:29 a good wicket, I felt like when I was batting I was quite enjoying the wicket, thought it
04:35 was good and building a nice partnership with Joe and we just didn't go on and finish our
04:41 batting innings as we would like and as I mentioned everyone in our team getting into
04:45 double figures and we didn't have enough really telling contributions.
04:49 Was there any dew out there later on?
05:07 A little bit.
05:09 Did it affect things at all?
05:13 Great question.
