Transcript
00:00 Hi I'm Laura Reid, the Assistant Features Editor at the Yorkshire Post and here's
00:05 a look at what's coming up in the week ahead. So last week saw Rishi Sunak's
00:10 first Conservative Party conference as Prime Minister and also his axing of the
00:16 northern leg of HS2. This week all eyes will be on the Labour Party as its
00:21 conference is held in Liverpool. Leader Sakhiya Starmer and Shadow Chancellor
00:26 Rachel Reeves will be among those making speeches and what they've got to say
00:30 about the party's vision for the future will no doubt be of interest to many
00:33 with the next general election due by January 2025. Also this week the
00:42 government's legal battle over its Rwanda deportation policy is set to be
00:46 heard at the Supreme Court. The Home Office has brought a challenge after the
00:50 Court of Appeal ruled earlier this year that the multi-million pound deal which
00:54 would see asylum seekers deported to the East African nation was unlawful. The UK's
01:04 highest court said the hearing is scheduled to take place from October 9th
01:07 to the 11th and it's also due to be broadcast live on the court's website.
01:14 Also this week the Police Federation of England and Wales which is the
01:18 association that represents police constables, sergeants, inspectors and
01:23 special constables, is set to hold its annual conference on October 10th and
01:27 the 11th. It's going to see some of the most prominent figures in policing
01:32 engage in discussions about the future of policing and addressing critical
01:37 issues within the service. And on to a Yorkshire event taking place this week
01:44 to finish. Light Night Leeds is back on October the 12th and 13th. It's said to
01:51 be the largest arts and light festival in the country. For 19 years now it's
01:58 been running and it sees some of the city's most recognizable indoor and
02:02 outdoor spaces transformed by artworks and performances. And this is set to be
02:08 no different with large-scale light projections, interactive installations
02:11 and music, dance and street performers. It's of course taking place in Leeds 2023
02:18 year of culture.
