Is the UK about to see a major bed bug infestation?

Paris is currently grappling with a bed bug problem, which has become increasingly severe in recent times, appearing in homes, cinemas, hospitals, and trains. The city has been combating these pests for years and initiated a government campaign in 2020 to address the issue, even establishing an emergency helpline for expert advice. According to a report from ANSES, over 10% of French households experienced bed bug infestations between 2017 and 2022.

In the UK, there has been a 65% surge in bed bug infestations from 2022 to 2023, primarily linked to increased summer travel. Even people who haven't traveled are finding bed bugs at home, including those without cars, indicating their presence on public transport networks. This increase is part of a long-term trend as bed bugs have developed resistance to various insecticides. While bed bugs can potentially travel from Paris to the UK, experts stress that local infestations in the UK are already established and require vigilant preventive measures, especially on public transportation networks.
