00:00 Hi everyone! Surprise! And welcome to a new episode of Surprise Guest with PR Kanghel.
00:07 I don't know who our guest today is, but you can join me in guessing.
00:13 It's another big surprise for us today, who we'll be joining.
00:18 And I hope I get it right the first time because I always get tense when I don't get the first clue.
00:24 Although we'll get a lot of clues. So hopefully, I'll be able to guess right away.
00:29 So, let's find out who our surprise guest for today is.
00:32 First clue. Guys, the clue is so generic.
00:36 It's like you want me to guess right away. First clue, Kapuso Host.
00:40 Okay, I didn't put male or female, right?
00:44 Okay, Kapuso Host. Oh, second clue, Sportscaster. I know who this is. Yay!
00:49 It's our surprise guest, Martin Javier. Yes!
00:52 Yes, it's me.
00:53 Hi, Martin!
00:55 Thank you for having me. I'm excited.
00:57 Me too! There are other clues that came up.
01:00 After I guessed you, Best TV Sports Program Host of the Platinum Stallion Media Award.
01:07 Wow, Martin! Congrats! And of course, this is the newest, Game Changer, which is your segment on 24 Horas.
01:14 Yes, Miss Lia.
01:15 Yes! That's why we haven't seen each other in the studio lately. I look forward to that.
01:20 Me too. I'm really excited. I hope it's also weekend.
01:24 Yes, I was going to say, Sarah, until weekend. Who do we need to talk to so that Game Changer will reach the weekend?
01:33 Miss Pia, that's just quick. We can talk about that quickly.
01:37 But it's live, right?
01:39 Yes, I'm a game. I'm a game.
01:42 Martin, we see each other from time to time in different events, different occasions, but it's always brief the time that we get to talk.
01:50 So at least now we get to sit down and really talk. I'll ask you how you are first.
01:54 We know what's keeping you busy, but kindly enumerate for us everything that's keeping you busy right now.
01:59 How am I? I would consider myself blessed and very grateful. I'm in a very grateful state right now because I receive a lot of blessings.
02:07 Because what I expected this year, Miss Pia, I knew because we had a short break from the NCAA.
02:13 I thought it would be just a bit relaxed, so a break period. But I've been hosting in GMA events like GMA Masterclass and for GMA Regional TV.
02:25 So we've been going to different regions, bringing along our different icons here in the Kapusi Network.
02:32 Sometimes I also host a pageant in the regionals. Aside from that, Game Changer has arrived.
02:40 So this wasn't expected at all. I didn't know that this was a possibility for me.
02:48 Well, of course, I've been looking at some of the shows that I could possibly be part of.
02:53 But that's just what I thought. I didn't know that this would be this fast.
02:58 But again, I'm very grateful to Sir Ollie, GMA News, Sparkle as well for making this happen for me, putting this all together.
03:06 And he's a different kind of person because I'm really fighting for this.
03:11 I know his perception, like sports. Because of course, I'm a sportscaster, sports guy.
03:19 It's not just sports. It's about what's trending right now. That's why he's a game changer.
03:25 So whatever game changing in different industries, may it be a recreational activity, theme parks, obstacle course.
03:34 If there are vlogs that are trending right now, we do that.
03:39 It's also different industries, business, tech. It's all possible.
03:42 So Ms. Pia, that's what I've been up to so far.
03:45 Will you mention, Martin, obviously we first met you on TV as a sportscaster.
03:50 Next, we met you on TV, but we first saw you on TV as a sportscaster.
03:55 Was this your first foray into television work, sportscasting?
03:59 Interestingly, no, Ms. Pia. So my introduction to, I wouldn't even consider it as a break, but that's my intro to television.
04:08 I took up broadcast communication. So my classmates were looking for opportunities outside.
04:14 So we auditioned in one VJ search. That was way back in 2011.
04:20 I was the first one to be selected. So my classmates didn't get selected.
04:25 I was the one who was fortunately called, I was the finalist there. And then after that, I did radio for a little bit.
04:31 And then I was still hosting. My first audition to become, you know this Ms. Pia, to become a court side reporter, you know the feeling.
04:41 My first audition was when I was a senior in college. So I didn't get selected.
04:46 I think that was the first year that the group didn't get selected by the guys.
04:51 So I said, "Yes." I said, "I'm excited." Usually, Ms. Pia, if you see one or two guys, they get selected.
04:57 At least per season, they have someone with them. That's also what I wanted to pursue before.
05:02 Because there were those who got selected first, court side reporter first, and then, you know, they progressed into anchoring and commentating.
05:11 And then when I didn't get selected, my world kind of collapsed. Because I said, "Hey, isn't this a possibility for me?"
05:18 So I graduated. And then I went into a little bit of advertising, social media work.
05:24 And then I saw on TV again, "Hey, there's an audition again." So I said, "I'll email it."
05:28 Because the producer and I chatted afterwards, my first audition. So I emailed him again.
05:35 I said, "Can I audition again?" So he said, "Okay, you can send me your resume via email."
05:43 I said, "No. I want to go there." I was even commuting, Ms. Pia.
05:48 I'll go there, I'll hustle, I'll go in there, and I'll be the one to drop off my resume.
05:54 That's what I did. And then she put it in the pile of, "There's a lot of auditionees."
05:59 And then one of the producers before, he saw me go in. So he remembered me from my previous audition.
06:05 He took my resume from the pile, and then he called me right away, maybe a day after,
06:10 "Do you want to audition for Ankor, but for a different league?"
06:14 "What's this? NCAA?" I said, "Yes!" That was my ultimate goal.
06:20 At that time, that was my ultimate goal. So I skipped the part of becoming a courtside reporter,
06:25 and then went straight to anchoring. But it wasn't super easy, Ms. Pia, because
06:30 when I first auditioned, obviously, I didn't have any experience.
06:34 My other co-host was a pro sportscaster. So he was already a pro.
06:41 He already had experience. So I was really nervous.
06:45 And then after the audition, they didn't call me for maybe almost a year.
06:49 The year after, next season, they called me. That was my very first venture into sportscasting.
06:56 Wow. One whole year. So one whole year, like nothing, no word whether or not you were accepted.
07:02 I mean, obviously, after a year, you start to think, "Oh, that's it."
07:05 But no comment or anything like that.
07:09 Okay. So, almost a year. I had a gym mate who was part of that sportscasting team.
07:16 He was one of the basketball analysts. He was in our gym, in Taytay.
07:21 We used to live there. I asked him, "Oh, how are you?"
07:25 He said, "Why are you calling me?" I said, "No, I haven't called you yet."
07:30 I was the last one to audition last year. He said, "You seem to be okay."
07:35 I said, "I don't want to go in." So I said, "Okay."
07:38 That was just right, Miss Pia. I resigned from my regular work.
07:42 It was the first time I didn't have a fallback job.
07:46 Then a month after, he was right, they called me.
07:51 That was our first meeting.
07:53 Wow. You know, that's a great testament to your character.
07:58 You didn't give up. With the audition for Courtside, after a year of waiting,
08:02 it was still a game. You just tried.
08:05 So that means you really wanted it also.
08:07 And you're not the type to just say, "Okay, if there's nothing, there's nothing."
08:10 Yes, Miss Pia. It's always been my dream.
08:13 Every time I'm in the office, I still radio.
08:17 I said, "Okay, is this what I really want? Is this my path?"
08:21 Maybe there's another thing for me out there that I'm going to be good at.
08:27 And I said, "Okay, I'll go for it."
08:31 When I was given the opportunity, I said, "I knew where I was in terms of skills,
08:37 in terms of talent. I knew I needed to do a lot of work for me to improve."
08:42 So that was my motivation. That's what I really did my best at.
08:47 So I said, "Okay, let's build this until, in any way,
08:51 I can be competitive with my fellow networks."
08:55 That's great.
08:56 It's also important to know what you want.
08:59 Because that's really what's going to help you really push for what you want.
09:03 And you said that you're sitting in your office job and you're thinking,
09:06 "Is there something else out there for me?"
09:08 It brings back memories for me because I remember I did office work then.
09:12 And then I was looking at this one, very vivid until now, more than 20 years ago.
09:17 But I was sitting on my desk in the office and then I saw out our window.
09:21 I saw a news crew cab and I thought, "That's really what I want to do."
09:27 So now we have something in common that I know about, Martin.
09:31 This is after you did Courtside, Ms. Pia.
09:34 Yes, that was after I did Courtside, but I wasn't in news yet.
09:38 Because I really wanted to do news and for me, that was my entry.
09:42 But of course, it wasn't continuous. I don't know, it was a different time.
09:47 Let's not say how many years ago it was.
09:50 But I admire, I feel like, when I was young,
09:56 there was an internet, so people were introducing the internet.
10:01 In the earlier times, it was harder to pursue your dream because you weren't open to information
10:11 and possibilities, like paths or track maps.
10:16 You can pursue that in life.
10:18 I admire that, Ms. Pia. I feel like the people in the past were more of a pure hustle.
10:24 Why did they go there?
10:26 It's just that we're so old when we didn't have internet back then.
10:29 But that's not true because back then, there were no cellphones that you could practice how to do a video.
10:37 If you wanted to practice how to do a video, you would buy a handycam.
10:41 Yes, a handycam.
10:43 It's not cheap. Not everybody had a handycam.
10:47 But anyway, it's funny, Martin.
10:50 Being a sportscaster, that's really the work that you wanted to do on TV?
10:54 Yes.
10:55 As in sports, because you're a sports fan?
10:57 Yes. I guess I'm a sports fan.
11:00 I started watching sports maybe 8 or 9 years old.
11:04 My dad introduced me to the Lakers.
11:07 I'm a forever Laker fan. He introduced me to the Lakers in the year 2000.
11:13 I was just watching.
11:15 In 2001, I was in grade 3 and we were playing against the Classics.
11:21 I still have a teammate.
11:24 We were playing against the winners of the Sixers or Lakers.
11:27 Allen Iverson, Shock, and Kobe.
11:30 We said, "We have the Lakers."
11:32 Our opponent was Philadelphia.
11:34 So the Lakers won.
11:35 Ever since then, ever since that series and that season,
11:38 I've been looking for him.
11:40 When I woke up, I saw that the internet was ISP.
11:46 The dial-ups and all.
11:48 But I still search slowly.
11:50 I still search for NBA.com.
11:54 I read the articles and then I look for highlights of the day.
11:58 After basketball or after NBA,
12:01 I saw that there are good leagues in the Philippines.
12:05 I watched PBA, PBL, NCAA, UAP.
12:10 My favorite was PBL.
12:12 That was the PBA's D-League.
12:15 You know that, right?
12:16 That was my favorite before.
12:18 I really like the well-coached.
12:20 I really know them.
12:23 After that, I also like to watch...
12:27 Since I only watch basketball,
12:29 you can see that there are a lot of sports channels
12:31 that are international in cable.
12:33 I watch those sometimes.
12:35 I watch tennis, football,
12:37 especially those...
12:39 I also play video games.
12:41 I play FIFA.
12:43 I asked, "Who are these people?"
12:44 I watch those games.
12:46 That's where my interest in sports started.
12:50 But Miss Pia,
12:51 I remember my first time covering a game.
12:56 My very first time.
12:59 I said, "What you're watching on TV
13:01 is different from what you're doing."
13:03 And you're doing the commentary.
13:05 Especially, you're doing it for the first time.
13:07 It's good if you have prior experience.
13:09 Like, you did court-side reporting.
13:11 Because you have confidence
13:13 to face the camera
13:16 and speak in front of the camera.
13:17 But if you're coming from...
13:19 totally from scratch,
13:21 it's gonna be like an uphill climb.
13:25 You really need to learn.
13:28 My goal in my first game
13:31 was to be decent today.
13:34 I said, "My performance needs to be decent."
13:37 They won't say, "He's so bad."
13:40 I said, "It's okay.
13:42 I can do it."
13:44 That was my goal.
13:45 Don't you have a fear of dead air?
13:47 I feel like that's the number one fear
13:49 of anybody who has to do straight commentary on TV.
13:51 Because until now,
13:52 when I do interviews also,
13:54 I'm nervous that I might not have the next question.
13:57 I feel like I need at least five questions
14:00 that are lined up.
14:01 Because I'm so scared of dead air.
14:03 Did that ever happen to you?
14:04 Oh, yes.
14:05 Especially in my very first season, Miss Pia,
14:09 I would experience
14:11 when you're really about to black out.
14:13 Or when you have a mental blackout.
14:16 You're not about to black out.
14:18 You're just about to have a mental blackout.
14:19 You have a mental blackout that's like, "Oh, okay."
14:22 Because this is what I describe in my very first season,
14:26 especially with The Craft.
14:28 I said, "The commentary,
14:30 when you're doing it for the first time,
14:33 and in your first few games,
14:34 it's like you're still drowning.
14:36 It's like you're still floating.
14:38 You're still there."
14:39 And then eventually, in your second season, third season,
14:42 that's when you see it on a different perspective.
14:45 So that's when you gain more control of the coverage.
14:48 But your first ones, you don't have that.
14:50 You're just like that.
14:52 So you see that.
14:54 Sometimes I have a mental blackout.
14:56 And in my mind,
14:57 I have a mental blackout that I'm missing mid-sentence.
15:02 And then for five seconds, it's not there.
15:05 In my head, it was much worse.
15:08 I said, "Oh, I panicked."
15:11 But the producers were saying, "It's okay, it's not obvious anymore."
15:14 But for me, I didn't say anything.
15:17 "It's ugly.
15:18 What did they say about me?"
15:21 I have those kinds of thoughts.
15:23 But it's okay that you set higher standards for yourself, right?
15:27 Because that's how we're all going to improve
15:30 at whatever it is that we're doing.
15:32 Not necessarily as a host or doing commentary or whatever.
15:37 But in anything that you do,
15:38 always set a higher standard for yourself.
15:40 But let's talk about, Martin, let's talk about NC.
15:43 Because imagine, it's the 99th season.
15:45 I always say that I've been wanting to watch an NC game live.
15:48 But I haven't had the chance because the games now are always on weekends.
15:51 And it's right before we also go on air.
15:54 Can you describe to us the atmosphere of NC?
15:57 I mean, you said you've watched all the different leagues growing up.
16:01 It's different per league.
16:03 How would you describe the NC experience?
16:05 Wow.
16:06 The NC experience is different.
16:10 Especially when we're getting to the Final Four
16:13 and Finals, you can really see the passion and rivalry of the alumni.
16:19 They're really coming back.
16:20 Because the NCAA experience,
16:22 I think a lot of basketball fans know it as well here in the Philippines.
16:27 It's much more physical, the style of play.
16:30 So when you talk about the other leagues,
16:32 like other collegiate leagues at least,
16:34 they're more organized.
16:36 Here, it's organized ball, but a little more physical.
16:41 And the players have more freedom to explore their individual talents
16:47 and individual skills as basketball players.
16:51 So that's what makes it more entertaining for me.
16:54 And that's probably the reason, Ms. Pia,
16:57 why a lot of players from the NCAA are making progress
17:03 and are able to have good careers when it comes to professional leagues.
17:07 So that's the NCAA experience.
17:10 The physicality, you can really see the players.
17:13 Because I watch preseason leagues.
17:15 So that's part of their preparation.
17:17 So I watch them just to check out their lineup in the upcoming season.
17:21 The level of competition in their preseason leagues
17:25 is so different from, for example, our opening day.
17:28 I said, the intensity is really different.
17:32 When it comes to the mother league, the NCAA,
17:34 they're really raising their players.
17:36 Because they know what's at stake when they join the NCAA
17:41 and when the NCAA starts.
17:43 It's really different when it comes to school rivalry.
17:46 Your crowd is also different.
17:48 Yes, it's really different.
17:50 This is also what others describe,
17:52 that college really makes you a player, a fan, a student.
17:58 What is that?
17:59 It's the passion you see.
18:01 Because they're doing it all for their school.
18:03 That's the raw thing.
18:06 We play basketball for our school.
18:09 So we're going all out.
18:11 We'll leave it all on the floor.
18:13 We won't leave anything for ourselves.
18:15 And that's the support.
18:17 Especially when we go to the final four and finals.
18:20 I think last season was one of the most intense final series
18:24 that I've ever seen.
18:26 Oh yes, it was really intense.
18:28 And this is not the biggest rivalry,
18:34 San Beata-Latran.
18:35 It's not even San Beata-Latran.
18:36 It was Benilde.
18:38 Benilde and Latran.
18:39 Unheard of, especially in the previous seasons,
18:42 that Benilde fans were that intense.
18:45 And they filled the venues.
18:47 I said, "Okay, something's changing.
18:49 We're doing something right, at least,
18:52 in promoting the NCAA here at GMA."
18:56 I know, Martin, you can't have a favorite team.
18:59 Or at least you can't tell us who your favorite team is.
19:03 But who are the players that excite you now
19:07 when you watch the NCAA?
19:08 This season, I'm not sure if it's going to be...
19:11 Because a lot of people say it's super wide open.
19:13 Because a lot of people are gone.
19:14 Especially in Latran, there are a lot of key players
19:18 from their previous three championships.
19:21 But I'm going to start with the defending champions.
19:24 I think they still have a lineup, at least,
19:27 to defend their championship,
19:29 go for a fourth straight championship.
19:31 Maybe in Latran, it's Kurt Rayson.
19:34 He's been balling in the preseason,
19:36 dropping 30 points, 35 points,
19:39 casually against other tougher collegiate competition.
19:43 And of course, when it comes to Benilde,
19:47 it's me.
19:48 It's Wilgo Azum.
19:50 And he's coming off one of his best seasons.
19:53 His MVP season in the NCAA.
19:55 So with him returning,
19:57 and with the reinforcements that he has,
20:00 I think CSB is one of the teams to watch as well.
20:04 And of course, the other recruits.
20:06 Because a lot of them are gone this season.
20:08 A lot of them didn't continue.
20:10 Some are only here for one year.
20:12 But a lot of new names are coming in.
20:15 Those are the ones I'm looking forward to.
20:17 And especially the second-year players like San Sebastian.
20:19 They have a very good core there.
20:22 Ryan William Bing.
20:23 Michael Are.
20:24 We were expecting Are to be the next great point guard for San Sebastian.
20:31 But he wasn't able to get his game going.
20:34 At least not the way he ideally wanted it to be.
20:38 So I expected him to really make his mark this season.
20:42 And who else?
20:44 JRU.
20:45 Coach Louie has a good system.
20:49 And it's always been in place.
20:50 They didn't do well last year.
20:52 They lost momentum because of the COVID protocols.
20:56 But I think they also have a good chance this year.
21:00 So that's it, Ms. Pia.
21:01 Some of the players and teams to watch out for.
21:05 And not to mention the other teams.
21:06 I'm sorry if I can't mention the NCAA teams.
21:09 We have Perpetual.
21:10 They're also showing great performance in the preseason.
21:13 We have San Sebastian.
21:15 San Beda is always there.
21:16 Coach Yuri Escueta is a young.
21:18 Coach Yuri is a very young and a very modern type of coach.
21:25 Coach Yuri has a lot of great influences.
21:27 I think the struggle for him last year was the mix of players.
21:32 I think it was his first year as a young coach.
21:34 And the players were kind of uncertain if they still wanted to be there in the school or not.
21:40 They wanted to be out.
21:41 I think key for him in the second season is to get players who want to play for him.
21:47 And who will accept his system.
21:50 I like what you pointed out, Martin.
21:52 That it's not just San Beda and Letran.
21:55 In the past, that was the great NCAA rivalry.
21:58 Because other teams are really getting stronger.
22:00 Plus like you mentioned, Benil with Will Gossum coming back.
22:03 And then, of course, now coming into the season, they have some level of championship experience.
22:09 Because last year, it was 20 years since the last time they were in the finals.
22:15 And so now, they have a little momentum on their part.
22:19 So there are a lot of permutations that can happen until the finals.
22:23 Yes.
22:24 So it will be more exciting this season, Ms. Pia.
22:28 Because there are teams that are emerging that we didn't expect.
22:33 Because I think 11 or 12 straight years, San Beda entered the finals of the NCAA.
22:40 But starting a couple of seasons ago, that's when their streak broke.
22:46 And we've been seeing, not to mention, Ms. Pia,
22:50 the young team last year who made it to the Final Four,
22:53 was looking to take it all the way this year, LPU.
22:57 They made it to the Final Four.
22:58 We were all surprised.
22:59 We didn't have a Final Four prediction, and then they made it to the Final Four.
23:03 I guess the race right now is wide open.
23:06 But of course, we have frontrunners not named San Beda or Letran.
23:11 There are other schools that are emerging.
23:14 Martin, you're good at explaining basketball.
23:18 Which is, of course, expected.
23:20 You are a sportscaster.
23:22 So I'm curious how you make that shift between sports and, let's say, your other hosting gigs.
23:27 Like, for example, when you're hosting a beauty pageant,
23:30 sometimes you'll switch it up.
23:32 Like, "Here, the candidate number is getting arranged."
23:35 It's not a problem for you at all.
23:38 [laughs]
23:39 Stay updated with Nelson Canlas.
23:46 Have you been busted?
23:47 No.
23:48 Oh, with confidence, huh?
23:50 The online source for anything showbiz.
23:53 Wait a minute, Rey, I have a surprise for you.
23:55 Hello?
23:56 [laughs]
23:57 The latest celebrity news.
23:59 New coverage for our updaters.
24:03 You've been in this for seven months.
24:05 Why did you just get out?
24:07 I'm a bit confused.
24:09 Show us the reason for your breakup with Carla.
24:13 Wow, straight to the point.
24:15 Follow the principles.
24:17 Whatever you do, don't get hurt.
24:20 Be fair and be grateful.
24:22 Updated with Nelson Canlas.
24:25 Martin, you're good at explaining basketball.
24:33 Which is, of course, expected.
24:35 But you are a sportscaster.
24:37 So I'm curious how you make that shift
24:39 between sports and your other hosting gigs.
24:42 For example, when you're hosting a beauty pageant,
24:45 sometimes you switch it up.
24:47 Like, "Here, the candidate number is getting arranged."
24:50 [laughs]
24:51 It's not a problem for you at all.
24:53 Ah, it used to be a problem, Miss Pia.
24:56 Especially when I was hosting my first pageant.
25:01 I was a bit...
25:03 My tendency in sportscasting is...
25:08 I'm a bit grumpy.
25:10 [laughs]
25:12 I'm like that. I'm a bit grumpy.
25:17 I was the first to host a pageant.
25:19 I said, "Hmm, it didn't work."
25:22 I didn't want to do it anymore.
25:24 So I learned from that.
25:27 I gained a bit of confidence.
25:29 I said, "Okay, now I know what to do."
25:32 Because I got started.
25:34 I didn't start with...
25:36 Well, hosting-wise,
25:38 sportscasting was something that just came along.
25:42 It was just part of the journey.
25:44 I really started with hosting
25:47 and hosting different events.
25:49 So at least I have a background in that.
25:51 So when I was shifting, I just went back.
25:54 Although, this is also my experience, Miss Pia.
25:58 I wasn't...
26:00 How do I explain this?
26:02 I wasn't this confident or I wasn't this comfortable
26:06 with myself and with my hosting style
26:10 until I came to GMA.
26:12 That's what I felt.
26:13 It was after the Kapuso Network got me
26:16 that really elevated my skills and confidence.
26:20 Because that's what they said.
26:22 When you're in a position
26:24 or you're being put on the spot,
26:26 you consider it as a leadership position
26:30 or you're being marketed as the face of something.
26:33 I'm not saying I'm the face of anything.
26:35 But when you feel that way,
26:37 I was like, "Okay, I gotta step it up
26:41 and I gotta take it to the next level."
26:44 It's not possible anymore.
26:46 I used to host a morning show, Miss Pia.
26:49 So that's where I really loosened up.
26:52 But they still see my shyness.
26:55 So I said, "I have to do this.
26:57 When I get here, I'll take it all down."
27:01 "I won't have inhibitions. Give it all."
27:04 Because you're expected to perform at a high level.
27:08 So now, when I do the hosting,
27:11 I look at myself.
27:13 I maintained my habit.
27:16 When I was starting out with sportscasting,
27:19 when I knew I wasn't good,
27:21 I watched every game.
27:23 I took down the bad things I did.
27:26 And I would try to apply changes in the next game.
27:30 So it's similar to my process now,
27:32 at least with some of my hosting gigs.
27:35 I said, "Okay."
27:36 Especially with the pageants.
27:37 Pageants are crucial, Miss Pia.
27:39 Because a lot of people watch.
27:41 We have a hero in the pageant.
27:43 South Cotabato.
27:44 I was surprised.
27:46 I said, "Yes."
27:47 Because I partnered with Michelle D.
27:49 - The reigning... - DT Queens.
27:51 Yes.
27:52 So everybody wanted to watch it.
27:55 I was surprised.
27:57 I said, "Hmm."
27:58 I looked around.
28:00 Some people sent me screenshots.
28:02 Those who watched,
28:03 they had 50K, 30K.
28:05 I said, "Local pageant? My gosh."
28:10 It's a completely different audience
28:14 from what you're used to.
28:15 They're not sports fans.
28:16 They're pageant fans.
28:17 Maybe there's a similar thing.
28:20 There is.
28:21 But Miss Pia,
28:23 be fair to them.
28:24 When you go to the different regional events,
28:28 you'll feel how warm they are
28:31 and how supportive they are.
28:33 Because if you hype them,
28:37 or...
28:38 That's how I do my intro.
28:39 I would hype them up,
28:40 ask them how they are.
28:42 They would really respond.
28:45 They'd go, "Wow!"
28:46 That's what I crave for the crowd.
28:50 As a host,
28:51 that's what I crave for.
28:54 They're very responsive.
28:56 They respond to the energy you're giving them.
28:59 But of course, after that,
29:01 I get my adjustments.
29:05 This is a formal event.
29:07 I stay formal.
29:10 But I would inject...
29:11 I love joking around, Miss Pia.
29:13 I inject some jokes here and there.
29:16 That's my flavor in my hosting.
29:22 When you were younger, Martin,
29:24 and you were growing up as a big basketball fan,
29:28 what was your ultimate goal or your ultimate dream?
29:31 Was it to be a sportscaster, an athlete,
29:34 or just television work in general?
29:36 Oh, okay.
29:37 When I was a kid,
29:38 like kid, kid, Miss Pia.
29:39 Kid, kid.
29:40 And then how did it evolve?
29:41 Oh, you wanted to be a doctor?
29:43 I wanted to be a doctor
29:44 because that's the most generic answer.
29:47 Before, I wanted to be a doctor.
29:51 I didn't have a dream.
29:53 Honestly, I remember in one of the retreats,
29:57 we had a group in my high school.
30:00 It was a retreat.
30:01 Before you go, you have an interview.
30:03 A director asked me,
30:06 "What do you want to be in life?"
30:08 I said, "I want to be someone."
30:16 I said, "I want to be someone."
30:18 He said, "Someone? What someone?"
30:20 What kind of person?
30:21 "Someone."
30:22 What I really meant was,
30:24 of course, you know what I mean, Miss Pia.
30:26 I want to be someone people look up to.
30:28 That's my general idea.
30:30 That's what I wanted at that time.
30:33 That's when it started, Miss Pia.
30:35 I started looking for more, I guess.
30:39 Especially when I learned
30:41 that it was a possibility for me
30:44 to pursue this path.
30:46 I didn't know it was a possibility.
30:48 When I was studying in college,
30:50 I was still shy.
30:52 You couldn't understand me.
30:55 I was more nasal and more arrogant.
30:58 I never really expected myself
31:02 to pursue this path.
31:03 But when I got into my very first venture,
31:09 which is the VJ search,
31:10 I said, "Hey, this is possible."
31:12 So, why not?
31:14 My idea before was,
31:17 okay, when I was in high school,
31:20 fourth year,
31:21 I'll just do a mascum.
31:24 Because my parents are both doing a mascum.
31:27 So, I'll just do a mascum.
31:28 Ah, okay.
31:29 That's what I pursued.
31:31 I said, "After this, I'll just follow my dad."
31:34 My dad is a producer of commercials.
31:37 So, I said, "I'll just follow him."
31:40 So that I'll have a guide.
31:42 So, that was my idea before.
31:43 I said, "After I graduate,
31:45 I want to go to advertising.
31:47 I want to be a big boss
31:48 in an advertising firm."
31:50 When I was there already,
31:51 I did it.
31:52 I entered an agency.
31:53 But because I was open
31:55 to other things,
31:57 I tried other things
31:59 that I could pursue.
32:02 That's when I thought,
32:05 "Okay, I can pursue that."
32:07 But the fear there, Ms. Pia,
32:09 of course, the fear is always,
32:11 because in a way,
32:12 what I'm doing right now
32:13 is still freelancing.
32:15 Well, not now, because I'm with GMA.
32:17 But in a way, it is.
32:18 Because you don't have a definite salary per month.
32:21 It's not corporate.
32:23 So, I think the fear before,
32:26 especially for me,
32:28 was, "Okay, when I leave this job,
32:31 when I go all-in
32:33 in this industry,
32:35 there are months when you don't have,
32:37 especially when you're starting from scratch
32:39 and you don't have a lot of investment,
32:41 there are months when you don't have a salary
32:45 and you're waiting for your next opportunity.
32:48 Are you willing to do that?"
32:49 And that's my negotiation with myself.
32:53 I look at other leaders in the industry
32:57 who have been successful.
32:59 I said, "No, you need to go all-in.
33:01 You can't please many masters,
33:03 especially in life,
33:05 unless you want everything to be half-baked.
33:08 So, you really need to focus on your energy."
33:12 So, that's when I decided
33:14 to drop my day job
33:17 and just pursue this full-time.
33:20 Well, it looks obviously like
33:22 going all-in is paying off for you.
33:24 You know, everyone who gets to work with you
33:26 is impressed by the quality of work
33:30 and the caliber that you bring to the table.
33:32 And this one, I remember,
33:34 because you hosted the contract signing
33:37 for Ms. Jessica Soho.
33:39 And imagine the Jessica Soho
33:41 saying she's impressed by the work that you do.
33:44 I mean, what was that like for you?
33:46 Jessica Soho told you that
33:48 your hosting is impressive.
33:50 Yes.
33:52 I was literally in love with her mid-hosting.
33:56 That was my reaction to the video I posted.
34:02 I just recorded it for Kuya,
34:06 one of our production staff.
34:09 I just told him to record whatever he could get.
34:13 So, my reaction to that was really legit and authentic.
34:17 I was genuinely like, "Oh, my gosh!"
34:20 I remember that, especially in college,
34:23 because we were in the same college,
34:26 I was in the university.
34:28 So, I remember that when I asked people there,
34:31 I know that there were a lot of prominent alumni in that college.
34:36 But who were the ones that you really looked up to?
34:40 They invited Ma'am Jess so many times.
34:43 They always said, "Ma'am Jess."
34:45 So, for me, to hear her say that,
34:47 and I even saw her P-Body.
34:50 I was like, "What?"
34:53 That was my introduction.
34:55 I just saw her awards there,
34:57 New York Film Festivals.
34:59 So, I was like, "This is it."
35:01 That's what I'm telling other people,
35:04 that this is what people should look up to.
35:08 Because, you know,
35:10 the world gave her recognition.
35:14 Recognized her good work. The world!
35:17 And this is the Oscars of journalism, P-Body.
35:20 So, this is what we should look up to.
35:23 And for her to say that to me,
35:26 and to validate my hosting that day,
35:30 I said, "I think that's one of the biggest honors
35:33 I've ever received in any hosting I've ever done."
35:37 Probably the biggest.
35:38 Probably the biggest live comment I've ever received.
35:42 Because, Miss Pia, right after an event,
35:45 if you tell me, "Oh, you were really good."
35:49 I'll just say thank you.
35:51 But for me, I think about my mistakes.
35:55 I said, "Why didn't I do that?
35:57 Why didn't I say that?"
35:59 But they said thank you, so it's okay.
36:01 But I was left with my mistake,
36:03 that I could have done that better.
36:05 But when she said that, I was okay.
36:07 I wasn't thinking about others.
36:09 Imagine the pressure.
36:12 You're not just hosting in front of Jessica Soho,
36:14 you're hosting in front of Jessica Soho and her P-Body Awards.
36:17 The physical awards.
36:18 It's like a reminder that you're good at this.
36:21 You can't just be a petty.
36:23 I said, "It was still air-conditioned,
36:26 so I said, "It's cold here. I'll just stay warm."
36:30 And they were there,
36:32 Sir Duavit and Sir Yalong, they were watching.
36:36 I was like, "Okay, I gotta bring my A-game."
36:39 It's tense.
36:40 You're telling me that I'm getting tense.
36:43 Because if you go all out,
36:48 they'll react.
36:49 You gotta stay on a safe spot
36:52 that you'll give enough energy, enough effort
36:56 to work on the event.
36:58 I said, "Okay, let's go."
37:00 You have to find that right balance.
37:03 You have to strike that right balance.
37:05 You don't growl.
37:08 That's it.
37:09 But you still have energy.
37:12 That's cute, right?
37:15 But so now, Martin,
37:17 like you mentioned earlier,
37:18 you're doing Game Changer.
37:20 So now, you've done sports,
37:23 and then you've done your hosting, entertainment,
37:26 and now you're also doing news.
37:28 You get to enjoy the different aspects of it all.
37:31 What is it about news now
37:34 that excites you with the new segment?
37:36 Like you mentioned earlier,
37:37 it's not just about sports, right?
37:39 Aside from meeting everybody the first time,
37:43 I met Ms. Mel for the first time.
37:46 I said, "Ms. Mel, hello, hello."
37:50 I've met Ms. Ia before.
37:52 Of course, Ms. Vicky, I met her too.
37:55 Sir Emil, I met him too.
37:57 Aside from meeting everybody,
37:59 our segment is super,
38:02 it's game-changing in different ways.
38:05 First, we have the content.
38:06 Of course, we have game-changing topics,
38:08 game-changing in different industries.
38:10 We're just starting now.
38:12 We're trying out different activities
38:14 that Filipinos could also try out
38:16 that are a bit extreme,
38:18 and they can make it a pastime.
38:21 That's how it is.
38:22 So we're also venturing into trending topics as well,
38:25 trending vlogs,
38:27 trending personalities,
38:29 and we also interview different game-changing personalities.
38:33 Of course, I'm in the spotlight of sports,
38:36 so I know who are the game-changing Filipinos in sports.
38:40 So the ones who really make a mark,
38:43 especially on the international stage
38:45 and on the world stage.
38:47 So that's also part of it.
38:50 In the future, we are going to be exploring
38:52 into different tech topics, business topics.
38:55 That's how dynamic the segment is.
38:58 Plus, the presentation is also not your regular feature
39:03 on a newscast.
39:04 So we put a little twist on the editing.
39:07 We put a little...
39:08 Actually, not a little, but a lot of twists
39:11 on the editing because we need...
39:15 It should cater to, of course,
39:17 the existing viewers of 24 Horas,
39:19 but it should also be for the Gen Zs, the millennials.
39:24 The ones who are doing different transitions on TikTok,
39:28 and the like.
39:29 Those are our ideas that we also do
39:32 on the execution, on the edits, on the episodes.
39:36 So I like it that way.
39:37 And aside from that, Miss Pia,
39:39 I'm really fighting for it because
39:41 in one of our features,
39:43 I was able to try paragliding.
39:46 Wow!
39:47 That was my first time.
39:48 I said, "Wow!"
39:50 And I didn't know what to expect
39:52 because although I'm...
39:54 In a previous show that I hosted live,
39:58 I also tried different rides, different segments.
40:01 But that was a long time ago.
40:03 So it was a different feeling here.
40:05 And it's different if you're doing it for 24...
40:08 There's also added pressure and a little weight
40:13 when you're on 24 Horas.
40:15 It's the number one...
40:16 Not even just the number one news show in the country,
40:19 it's the number one show in the country.
40:21 It's just the number one show in the country.
40:24 So for you to be there,
40:26 I gotta bring my A-game, I gotta perform.
40:29 So, Miss Pia, it's mixed.
40:31 But again, overall, I'm very grateful and very blessed.
40:35 Again, did not expect this opportunity to come along.
40:40 But I'm just gonna be all out on it.
40:43 And so now, Martin, you've done sports,
40:45 you've done...
40:47 And you're doing news.
40:48 How about entertainment?
40:50 I mean, have you done a TV series?
40:53 Maybe you've done a TV series.
40:55 I just don't know.
40:56 Not yet, Miss Pia.
40:58 Not yet? Is it something that you would consider acting in a TV series?
41:02 Actually, Miss Pia, I just did an acting workshop.
41:05 Wow, really?
41:06 I did an acting workshop in Sparkle.
41:11 So initially, I liked it.
41:13 Before Game Changer came along, I said, "This is something I'm..."
41:18 Because I'm a fan of...
41:20 I know it's not obvious, but I'm also a fan of musicals and plays.
41:26 Oh, it's not obvious.
41:27 It's not obvious.
41:28 Because sports is, "Oh, talk!"
41:30 Then suddenly, musicals and plays.
41:32 When I went to New York for the first time,
41:35 I remember, pre-pandemic,
41:37 I feel like the Lord sent me there before the pandemic.
41:40 When I went there, I saw four Broadway plays.
41:44 I said, "Okay, I won't miss this."
41:46 That's how interested I was.
41:48 Recently, I watched Khalil Ramos, my fellow actor.
41:53 Oh, Tick Tock Boom.
41:54 Yes, Tick Tock Boom.
41:55 I was a fan of the movie.
41:57 So I really wanted to see their interpretation on stage.
42:02 So again, kudos to them.
42:04 So, I can see that I'm a fan of musicals
42:08 because I can also see their process.
42:11 And I feel like it's similar.
42:13 Anybody in the TV industry,
42:17 I feel like it's similar to Hustle and Grind
42:20 and how they conduct themselves
42:22 and how they pursue their dreams.
42:24 So, I'm a fan of their process.
42:27 So, I went to an acting workshop.
42:28 I said, "This is possible."
42:30 I really appreciated how difficult the process of acting is.
42:39 It's not a joke.
42:40 You really invest a lot of emotions.
42:42 And you really get drained.
42:44 And plus, you have to have a system.
42:47 You shouldn't win-win with your acting gigs.
42:55 If you're serious about it,
42:58 you have to learn the process,
42:59 you have to learn the structure.
43:01 So that's what you'll use every time.
43:03 I'm not closing the doors, Miss Pia.
43:06 Maybe next time I interview you or next time I see you,
43:09 you'll be a starring role.
43:11 In a TV series.
43:14 Let's see.
43:16 That's exciting.
43:17 But that's the best attitude.
43:20 Always keep your doors open
43:23 for whatever opportunities present themselves.
43:25 Like you said,
43:26 sparse casting wasn't something
43:28 that you thought you would actually
43:30 really be doing in the long term.
43:32 But the opportunity presented itself
43:33 and you grabbed it.
43:34 So, that's always, I think, the best attitude.
43:37 In whatever career path you choose to take.
43:41 But Martin, since we have you,
43:44 the game changer here on the show,
43:47 we are going to play a little game with you.
43:50 Is that okay?
43:51 I'm nervous.
43:52 Don't be.
43:54 This is not too high stakes.
43:57 Okay.
43:58 Pride is the only thing in this game.
44:02 That's all that's at stake.
44:04 Just kidding.
44:05 Here.
44:06 So, let me go through it.
44:08 The title of this is
44:10 Game Changers with Martin Javier.
44:12 It's a pretty simple Q&A.
44:16 I'm going to ask you about
44:17 game changers in your life.
44:18 Is there a love life here?
44:20 Just kidding.
44:21 Because if there isn't,
44:23 I'll be the one to ask the question.
44:25 Just kidding.
44:26 Okay, here.
44:27 So, basically,
44:28 who are the game changers
44:30 in different aspects of Martin's life?
44:32 First, for you Martin,
44:34 who are the game changers
44:36 in the NCAA hosts?
44:38 Wow.
44:39 Game changer.
44:40 I won't mention myself.
44:42 I won't bring a bench.
44:43 I have a colleague.
44:45 I really look up to Anton.
44:48 Anton Rojas.
44:50 Before I got here,
44:52 I was a fan of his work.
44:53 Okay, nice.
44:54 So, Anton is one of the game changers
44:56 for you on NCAA.
44:57 How about when it comes to the athletes?
45:00 Okay.
45:01 Athletes in the past two seasons.
45:03 That's okay.
45:04 Yes, that's okay.
45:05 But anyone that you've covered.
45:07 Reyn Sabando.
45:08 Okay, you can explain.
45:10 Because Anton, you said,
45:11 because of the work that he does,
45:12 the quality of work that he brings to the table.
45:14 How about Reyn Sabando?
45:16 Reyn Sabando.
45:17 I'm really proud of him.
45:19 Because after,
45:21 I think he's part of
45:23 why people watch the NCAA.
45:26 The very first season
45:28 that there were games
45:30 that were here in the GMA.
45:32 So, I think he's part of,
45:33 he's one of the big things
45:35 that increased viewership
45:37 of the NCAA.
45:39 Because Reyn has a lot of fans.
45:41 And then after,
45:42 he gave us highlight after,
45:45 highlight each game.
45:47 Won the MVP.
45:49 Won the championship.
45:51 Went to Korea.
45:52 And then won a championship again
45:54 with his Korean team.
45:55 In the highest league there.
45:57 In Korea.
45:59 And you won't be a star player right away
46:03 because they have imports.
46:05 But he was a vital part
46:07 of that championship team.
46:09 And now he's part of,
46:10 at least in the extended lineup,
46:12 extended roster in the Philippines,
46:15 he's still part of the national team.
46:17 So for me,
46:18 Reyn Sabando,
46:20 his arrival in the NCAA
46:21 was definitely a game changer.
46:23 Okay, that's,
46:24 it's understandable, right?
46:26 Why you would consider him
46:28 a game changer?
46:29 How about,
46:30 who's the game changer for Martin
46:32 when it comes to hosting?
46:34 Hosting?
46:35 International and what else?
46:37 Any, either.
46:39 Okay, there's an idol in hosting
46:41 is Conan O'Brien.
46:43 Oh, I love Conan.
46:45 I'm a big fan of Conan.
46:47 Because he's fast on the V.
46:49 That's rare,
46:50 the fast snap, snap, snap, snap, snap.
46:53 That's rare in,
46:54 well, you can see that in other hosts,
46:56 but they're not as fast as Conan.
46:59 He's very witty.
47:00 He's very intelligent as well.
47:02 When it comes to Harvard graduate,
47:04 that's him.
47:05 And then,
47:06 in any stage,
47:07 you can get him up there,
47:09 you can get him to hold the mic,
47:10 you don't need to get a set ready.
47:12 He has a lock-in
47:14 that will just come out
47:15 and flow to him.
47:16 And aside from that, Miss Pia,
47:18 I also admire him because,
47:19 especially with what happened to him before,
47:22 he's the one who brought his staff.
47:24 Yes.
47:25 So he was a host, I think,
47:27 and he was about to be,
47:28 or he became the host of The Tonight Show.
47:30 And then, you know,
47:31 the next host,
47:32 the previous host came back,
47:34 so he got kind of booted out.
47:36 So he brought his staff,
47:38 everyone who helped him.
47:40 It's the overall package for me.
47:42 He's my idol when it comes to
47:43 hosting, hosting in general.
47:46 And he can handle any audience, right?
47:49 I mean, anyone he talks to.
47:51 Okay, here it is.
47:53 Oh, Martin.
47:54 Are you ready for the game changer
47:56 in your love life?
47:58 That is assuming that
47:59 you don't have a game changer yet.
48:01 I don't have one yet.
48:04 You don't have one yet?
48:05 But I'm ready!
48:06 Where is it?
48:08 I'm just here waiting.
48:10 Right, Papa?
48:11 I'm just here waiting.
48:12 Okay, okay.
48:13 I'm the one who's waiting.
48:15 I'm the one who doesn't come and goes.
48:18 No, I'm the one who's,
48:20 especially at this stage,
48:22 I'm ready.
48:24 It's like you're ready for your next project.
48:28 "I'm ready."
48:29 Here's the thing.
48:31 What are you looking for
48:32 in a game changer in your love life?
48:34 Right?
48:35 I'm sure that's what the girls are asking.
48:37 That's what they want to know.
48:38 What is it?
48:39 Which aspect, Miss Pia?
48:41 Is this physical?
48:42 Or is this personality?
48:43 Both physical and personality-wise.
48:47 What's the top?
48:49 Ah, well,
48:51 what is it?
48:52 Initially, of course,
48:54 what I pursue are the things
48:56 that I really like and I'm attracted to.
48:59 So I guess that's the first layer.
49:00 True.
49:01 But that's only the first layer.
49:03 You have to be attracted to the person.
49:06 Usually, I'm the type who's
49:07 a bit of a mystic, white-skinned.
49:09 And then,
49:10 cute, defined features.
49:13 That's it.
49:14 This is too much.
49:15 Very specific, right?
49:16 Very specific, yes.
49:17 That's what I'm looking for.
49:19 I know that my type is not like that.
49:21 Next, of course,
49:22 you take them out on a date
49:24 and then you get to know them.
49:26 What I'm looking for is more than...
49:28 Actually, my personality
49:30 and conversation is next.
49:33 I really observe how they
49:36 interact with other people.
49:38 Because I also want to be kind.
49:40 I want to be okay with other people.
49:42 And they treat other people
49:44 the right way.
49:46 So, equally, that's what I'm looking for.
49:49 And I see that the first time.
49:53 What else, Martin?
49:55 You have more?
49:56 Of course, personality.
49:59 I also want...
50:02 This is the overall.
50:05 Personality-wise,
50:08 initially, you're kind.
50:10 But you also have a sense of humor.
50:13 And we should click on...
50:16 Not all of us are interested,
50:18 but at least we connect on different levels.
50:21 On some levels.
50:22 I feel like that's the game changer.
50:24 Martin, I feel like I know a lot of
50:26 artists who are kind,
50:28 who are kind,
50:30 who have a sense of humor.
50:33 Do you not know them yet?
50:36 I'm friendly here at GMA.
50:41 So, friends.
50:43 Friends? I've never heard of this kind of friends.
50:46 We're friends.
50:48 Friends.
50:49 That's it, Miss Pia.
50:52 Friends.
50:53 Friends.
50:54 Yes.
50:55 So, nothing else?
50:57 Martin, because of that,
50:59 I'll be on the lookout for all the
51:01 mestizas who are funny like that
51:04 so I can introduce them to you.
51:06 Okay, Miss Pia.
51:08 But that means you have to tell me
51:10 if you already have one.
51:11 Because we might introduce you to someone
51:13 and you already have one.
51:15 I'll update you.
51:17 Please keep us posted.
51:19 I'll introduce you.
51:22 Keep us posted.
51:23 Okay.
51:24 Next.
51:25 This is the last question.
51:28 How would you describe a game changer?
51:30 A real-life game changer?
51:32 How would I describe a real-life game changer?
51:36 Maybe, Miss Pia, I would describe it to people
51:40 in a horrible way.
51:42 Like, they're the first to do this,
51:45 they're the first to do that.
51:47 Or they shatter the conventions.
51:49 Because I see a lot of people
51:54 who show it to us.
51:56 Because a dreamer like me,
51:58 I feel like this is just one aspect
52:00 of being a game changer.
52:02 But a dreamer like me,
52:04 I have high expectations.
52:06 I'll say that I can do it.
52:08 But in my head, I know it will be hard.
52:11 The game changers just make them happen.
52:14 And they achieve the biggest of dreams.
52:17 They get the biggest of dreams.
52:19 And they perform at a high
52:24 and a very consistent level.
52:26 That's what a game changer is for me.
52:29 Especially now in our line,
52:32 especially in international opportunities.
52:35 I'll give you an example.
52:37 Miss Dolly DeLeon.
52:39 It's insane what she did
52:41 for the acting industry just this year.
52:44 She was nominated for the Golden Globes,
52:47 she was in the international,
52:49 and now she is a legitimate
52:51 international actress.
52:53 So for me, a game changer is like that
52:55 because aside from her achievements,
52:58 it also has a ripple effect
53:02 for Filipinos.
53:04 Especially for Filipino actors.
53:06 We are being watched by international scouts
53:10 that they have a good pool of talent
53:13 in the Philippines.
53:15 It's the same with EJ Obiena.
53:18 It's the same with Bianca Bustamante
53:21 who represents us in F1 Academy.
53:24 Miss Jessica Soho gets recognized
53:27 by Peabody.
53:28 So that's what game changers are for me.
53:32 So if they get it,
53:34 and then the effect on the entire community
53:36 is massive, is very influential.
53:39 That's it.
53:40 Sorry, it's long.
53:41 No, but it's a great answer.
53:42 And we really look forward, Martin,
53:44 to meeting all these new game changers
53:46 that we might have not even heard of
53:48 through you on 24 Horas.
53:51 Thank you so much, Martin,
53:53 for taking time out to be with us today.
53:55 I had fun. I hope you had fun.
53:57 I had so much fun, Miss Pia.

54:01 Thank you.
54:02 Thanks for being with us, Martin.
54:03 And I hope to see you around again soon
54:05 in real life.
54:06 Yes, for sure.
54:07 In the 24 Horas studio, Miss Pia.
54:10 Hope to see you there.
54:11 Hope to see you there too.
54:12 Thank you, Martin.
