Transcript
00:00 We are in Southeast Texas.
00:01 We're going border to border, coast to coast,
00:04 and we're going to hit dirt every day.

00:44 When Toyota approached us about using a TRD Pro Tundra
00:47 in an episode of Dirt Every Day, I had the perfect idea.
00:50 This is a big truck.
00:51 It's got a big V8.
00:52 It's got awesome suspension, and it'd be great for a road trip.
00:55 But unlike most road trips where people are crossing America,
00:58 maybe coast to coast or border to border, I wanted to do both.
01:02 We are going from the Mexico border, the Gulf of Mexico,
01:05 all the way up to the Pacific Ocean and the Canada border
01:08 in one fell swoop.
01:09 We're going to hit some places we've been before.
01:11 We're going to hit a lot of places
01:12 we've never been before.
01:13 And hopefully, we're going to have a good time four-wheeling,
01:16 hitting the dirt every day, and also running down the highway.
01:19 We actually got two trucks.
01:20 One truck is following us with all the camera
01:22 crew and all their gear, the other truck I'm driving.
01:25 And the idea is, let's go off-road.
01:26 Let's see some really cool stuff.
01:28 Let's basically have an awesome, fun, adventure road trip
01:32 in this Toyota pickup truck.
01:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:36 Wow, look at that view.
01:41 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:44 Can you see that lighthouse over there?
01:49 That's in Mexico.
01:50 And that's the Gulf of Mexico.
01:52 And this dirt is Texas.
01:54 But the tide is coming in, so we got to hit the trail.
01:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:00 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:03 Today, we are in southern San Antonio, Texas, at Toyota Texas.
02:28 This is where they build Tacoma trucks and Toyota Tundras,
02:31 just like our TRD Pro.
02:32 We're going to go inside and get a tour
02:34 and see how they put these trucks together.
02:36 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:39 So we are right in the belly of the Toyota Texas plant.
02:48 Right behind me is where they're dropping in the engines.
02:51 But it's not a separate line for each truck.
02:53 It's amazing that they can drop in a four-cylinder engine
02:56 for a Tacoma, and then the next truck has a V6,
02:58 and then a V8, and then a four-cylinder,
03:00 and then another V8.
03:01 Like, these guys are constantly switching
03:03 between different vehicles.
03:05 And they're doing it so quickly.
03:06 They're literally building these trucks as fast
03:08 as people can order them.
03:11 So this is JJ.
03:12 Jay, you're the boss of the entire place?
03:15 No, sir.
03:15 I'm group leader for Final One Chassis 2.
03:18 All right, Final One Chassis 2.
03:19 So that's where, what, the truck--
03:21 the body drops on the chassis?
03:22 That is correct, sir.
03:23 And how many trucks do you guys build here?
03:27 Approximately 1,000 vehicles a day between both shifts.
03:30 1,000 vehicles a day?
03:32 Yes, sir.
03:32 Wow.
03:33 How many shifts?
03:33 Two shifts?
03:34 Two shifts.
03:35 How many employees?
03:37 Approximately 3,000.
03:38 Wow.
03:39 Body drop.
03:46 Done.
03:48 Peel out.
03:57 So the TRD Pro Tundra trucks are not
03:59 the same as all the other Tundras.
04:00 But they're made on the exact same line.
04:02 They're actually pretty rare.
04:03 And we kind of had to run around the factory
04:05 to find them building one.
04:06 There's an Inferno-colored one coming right now.
04:09 This is not the Inferno Tundra.
04:11 This is actually what they call a tugger.
04:13 The tuggers drive around and haul all the parts.
04:15 Now, the Inferno Tundra is on the rack back there.
04:18 And it should be catching up to us soon.
04:20 But we're going to put it right here.
04:21 And they're going to put the new tires on it.
04:22 Pretty cool.
04:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:29 If you ordered an Inferno TRD Pro Tundra,
04:34 that might be yours right there.
04:36 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:43 Any time you head out on a road trip,
05:00 it's always good to take some spare parts.
05:01 Not necessarily spare parts, but tools, recovery gear,
05:03 stuff like that.
05:04 So we're going to hit up the four parts here in San Antonio,
05:07 see what they got.
05:08 Just in case we get in trouble out on the trail.
05:12 How's it going?
05:12 Joel?
05:13 That's me.
05:14 Do you own that Land Cruiser out there?
05:15 I do.
05:15 I'm looking for a Toyota guy to help me out.
05:17 We're starting down here in Texas, down in Brownsville.
05:19 We're going all the way to Canada.
05:21 We can hook you up.
05:22 Perfect.
05:22 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:26 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:40 10, left.
05:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:51 [TIRES SCREECHING]
05:54 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:58 Hi there, Brian.
06:09 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:13 Brian.
06:17 Hey, Fred.
06:17 How's it going?
06:18 Good.
06:19 How's your trip so far?
06:20 It's been great.
06:20 We did Texas.
06:21 We went to the factory that built the Tundra.
06:23 Cool.
06:24 Check out this cool belt buckle I got.
06:25 Nice.
06:26 Well, you ready to go do the canyon?
06:27 Yeah.
06:28 Let's go do some four wheeling.
06:29 All right, sweet.
06:29 Let's go.
06:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:37 Hey, Brian.
06:56 What time of the year did we come through this last time?
06:59 I think it was wintertime, Fred.
07:01 It was pretty cold back then, from what I remember.
07:03 So that's probably why it looks so different.
07:05 Everything's so green this time.
07:07 Yeah, I really like this canyon at this time of the year.
07:09 It's a lot different coming through in this Tundra
07:18 compared to when I came in that open top Jeep.
07:22 A lot drier for you, I'm sure.
07:24 Yeah, I kind of feel like I'm wimping out.
07:27 I think when people watch my show,
07:28 they appreciate me when I'm really miserable.
07:33 Oh, we wouldn't want to see that.
07:35 Well, maybe some people might.
07:36 [LAUGHTER]
07:39 I think we're near the end of the canyon.
07:41 You want to come up here and ride with me in the Tundra?
07:43 Sure, let's do it.
07:44 All right.
07:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:00 [LAUGHTER]
08:04 Oh, look out, rocks.
08:13 Good thing we took it to the car wash yesterday.
08:15 This is a car wash.
08:16 What are you talking about?
08:17 [LAUGHTER]
08:20 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:24 Awesome.
08:34 Thanks, Bri.
08:35 Thank you, Fred.
08:35 Where are you headed now?
08:37 I'm going to go to the mountains, go camping.
08:38 I think we're heading over to get some dessert.
08:40 All right, enjoy.
08:41 All right.
08:41 See you later.
08:42 Take care, man.
08:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:46 Mm, pie, I can't wait.
08:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:26 Dear special lady friend, I'm in pie town
09:28 waiting for the pie shop to open.
09:30 Miss you, Fred.
09:31 Mm, pie, nom, nom, nom.
09:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:54 If you've never driven a Toyota Tundra,
09:56 it's a pretty big truck.
09:57 I mean, it's a full-sized four-wheel drive.
10:00 But when you head across Monument Valley,
10:03 you feel really small.
10:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:23 There's so much wide open space, giant rock formations,
10:27 just beautiful country.
10:30 It really makes you realize how big and old the planet is.
10:34 It's just an awesome place to go explore.
10:38 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:46 We are in my favorite town to go four-wheeling, Moab, Utah.
11:10 Now, before we started this road trip,
11:12 we did an online contest.
11:14 It was a hashtag social media type deal.
11:17 And we picked a winner to come out here and go four-wheeling
11:20 as part of Dirt Every Day.
11:21 This is Ayan.
11:22 Ayan is here from Richmond, Virginia.
11:24 How you doing, buddy?
11:25 Thanks, bud.
11:25 You ever been to Moab before?
11:26 Yes, it's been about five years.
11:28 But coming back is always fun.
11:30 Have you ever run the trail Hell's Revenge?
11:32 I have not, no.
11:33 So today, we're going to do Hell's Revenge.
11:35 We're going to take the Tundra over it.
11:36 We're going to get you behind the wheel,
11:37 let you go four-wheeling, do a little rock
11:39 crawling.
11:40 We also have my buddy Andy Bell.
11:42 Red.
11:42 How you been?
11:43 I'm good, buddy.
11:43 So Andy's going to get a chance to drive this.
11:45 It's not high-speed stuff like you normally do.
11:47 It's rock crawling.
11:48 But we'll have fun.
11:49 I think we can still get some air.
11:50 Oh, yeah.
11:50 No, we'll definitely get it off the ground if we have to.
11:53 Now, when you're rock crawling, it's
11:55 really good to have a spotter.
11:57 So my buddy Kevin, he drove down to help us out.
12:00 If you see Kevin pointing in one direction or the other,
12:02 just do what he tells you to do.
12:03 If you see him really getting crazy,
12:05 definitely do what he's telling you to do,
12:07 because you're probably about to drive off the edge.
12:09 You guys want to go wheeling?
12:10 Kevin, you're our guy.
12:11 Let's do it.
12:11 All right.
12:12 Let's go.
12:12 [ENGINE STARTS]
12:15 All right, let's get it.
12:18 There we go.
12:20 Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
12:21 Ah, that's a good little spot.
12:24 Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
12:25 [LAUGHTER]
12:28 Nice.
12:29 I like it about right here.
12:33 Yeah?
12:33 It's all Scott.
12:34 Yeah.
12:34 Just lean back.
12:35 Look at that view.
12:36 Isn't that awesome?
12:37 No, not you, Fred.
12:38 You watch the road.
12:39 All right.
12:39 Yeah, this is--
12:39 It's amazing.
12:40 This is why we come here.
12:41 Yeah, this is why we do what we do.
12:44 I'm going to drop us off this ledge here.
12:46 So this is a lot of what Hell's Revenge is.
12:51 It's like a lot of these steep climbs, steep drop-offs.
12:54 Over here is the actual obstacle.
13:03 She's a little steep.
13:07 Yeah.
13:09 Wow.
13:09 Wow, that's quite the [BLEEP] cheering section we got.
13:20 Don't [BLEEP] up, Fred.
13:21 Yeah, we got a full-on audience.
13:23 It's pretty legit.
13:23 Good.
13:24 So keep it high on the left.
13:31 High on the left, gotcha.
13:33 Get to here, keep it up.
13:35 Try it on the V. I'm literally just driving through the brakes.
13:40 Mm-hmm.
13:41 Right about here, it starts to spin.
13:51 Grabs.
13:57 Nice.
13:57 It's right up.
13:58 Walk it over to the left here.
14:04 [CAR DOOR SLAMS]
14:05 Just scrape right there.
14:07 Nice one.
14:10 All right.
14:11 Yeah.
14:11 Walking the park.
14:12 Well done.
14:12 Not too bad, buddy.
14:14 Not too bad.
14:15 You're up, Bill.
14:17 Let's do this.
14:17 All righty.
14:19 All right, here we go.
14:21 Here we come, Kevin.
14:23 Gotcha.
14:23 There you go.
14:28 You're good.
14:29 I'll find this right.
14:29 Do we want to be--
14:30 No, you're perfect.
14:31 All right.
14:32 You got it?
14:33 Keep going.
14:34 Yep.
14:39 Perfect.
14:43 Perfect.
14:45 Yep.
14:47 That's called let her eat.
14:49 Let her eat.
14:50 Let them dogs eat.
14:53 Made it.
14:54 Good job, Bill.
14:55 All right, man.
14:56 Not too bad.
14:57 Thanks for the coaching, guys.
14:58 You didn't jump anything.
14:59 I know.
15:00 Pretty lame.
15:00 Sorry.
15:01 We need to do it again.
15:03 Yeah.
15:03 That was pretty cool.
15:05 Who's next?
15:06 All right.
15:07 You ready for this, buddy?
15:08 All right.
15:08 Let me do the shot here.
15:11 Ian's about to drive up this thing.
15:13 He's never driven up this obstacle before.
15:15 He's also never driven this truck before.
15:17 I mean, what could really go wrong, huh?
15:19 Right.
15:19 I mean, it's not like we're going to roll over, catch on fire,
15:21 and burn to a crisp at the bottom.
15:24 Too many times.
15:25 There's lots of Jeeps that have rolled down this thing.
15:28 Is there?
15:28 Oh, yeah.
15:29 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:31 A little left.
15:34 Oh, god.
15:36 Oh, boy.
15:36 More left.
15:37 Did I mention we're left?
15:38 More left.
15:39 That's weird.
15:39 Start right.
15:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
15:43 OK.
15:47 Keep coming.
15:47 [LAUGHTER]
15:50 Just keep going straight ahead.
15:52 Perfect.
15:52 There you go.
15:53 Walk it right back down.
15:54 Straight a little bit.
15:55 Yep.
15:56 Now straight.
15:57 Straight.
15:59 There you go.
16:00 You got it.
16:01 Left.
16:02 A little bit left.
16:03 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:06 Good job.
16:08 Nice.
16:09 Good recovery.
16:10 Nice job.
16:12 Woo!
16:12 [LAUGHTER]
16:14 Made it.
16:15 [LAUGHTER]
16:17 Sick.
16:18 Woo!
16:19 Good job, buddy.
16:20 That gets the adrenaline going.
16:21 Yeah, good job.
16:22 That blows me away.
16:24 All these guys in their big rock crawlers out here,
16:26 and this is like off the showroom floor.
16:29 But you don't need a super modified vehicle.
16:31 You can take your normal pickup truck.
16:33 And if people that are watching the show realize that,
16:36 and they want to go on an adventure, well, means go.
16:39 Call ION.
16:39 Yeah.
16:40 Call ION.
16:40 We'll guide you.
16:41 Moab Tour Guide ION right here.
16:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
16:46 [ENGINE REVVING]
16:50 In two miles, I-15 North is on the right.
17:10 Our friend Gladys, the GPS lady, wants us back on the highway.
17:14 We've got to stop and fuel up this Tundra and get some coffee.
17:19 That's what's awesome about Idaho, Washington, Oregon.
17:23 They sell coffee everywhere.
17:25 You go across Utah, not so much.
17:29 Next left.
17:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:34 We finally made it to the sand dunes.
17:41 We are in St. Anthony's Sand Dunes, the largest sand dunes
17:44 in Idaho, some of them almost 400 feet tall.
17:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
17:51 When you're heading out to the dunes,
18:00 there's really two important things to do.
18:02 One, you need a safety flag.
18:04 There's a flag that you put on the back of your truck.
18:06 So if you're coming over a dune, somebody sees the flag,
18:08 they know that you're there.
18:09 And you're also watching out for flags on other riders out here.
18:13 You also want to air down your tires.
18:15 You air down the tires, it opens up the footprint on the tire,
18:17 gives you more traction on the sand,
18:19 helps you float over everything.
18:20 These Michelins, I'm running somewhere around 17 to 19 PSI.
18:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
18:29 Let's see what this truck will do.
18:37 We're going to come over here, see what's out here.
18:40 Wow.
18:42 It's awesome.
18:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
18:46 This is where that TRD Pro suspension is so good.
19:07 Soaks up these little whoops that we're running through.
19:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:12 It's like we're on a roller coaster.
19:14 I'm probably going to have my sound guy in the backseat
19:16 puking by the end of this.
19:18 Puke out the window, Neil.
19:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:22 So you just got to be constantly scanning everything, driving,
19:28 hanging on, watching for other people out here,
19:32 as well as just peeling out and having a good time.
19:34 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:38 [LAUGHTER]
19:39 Got it.
19:40 I'm going to jump it right here.
19:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
19:46 [LAUGHTER]
20:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
20:04 [TIRES SQUEALING]
20:07 Whipping cookies out in the sand dunes.
20:17 That tire that was aired down buckled underneath.
20:20 We blew the bead, so we're going to jack it up,
20:21 put some air back in it with that Smittybilt air
20:23 compressor we picked up back in Texas.
20:25 Boom.
20:26 Back on the trail.
20:28 The tire's clear all the way around.
20:30 Hopefully, our compressor will put out enough compressed air
20:33 that we can reseat the bead.
20:36 [MOTOR RUNNING]
20:39 You can hear the sand getting ground
20:43 between the tire and the wheel.
20:45 There it goes.
20:46 That's the inside.
20:47 See right here, there's still a big gap.
20:49 Don't put your finger in there while it's doing it.
20:51 Put it back?
20:52 Stick your tongue right in there.
20:54 There?
20:56 There it goes.
20:59 There you go.
21:00 [MOTOR RUNNING]
21:03 Oh.
21:10 [LAUGHTER]
21:13 You're right back there, sound guy.
21:15 [MOTOR RUNNING]
21:17 [LAUGHTER]
21:19 [MOTOR RUNNING]
21:23 [MUSIC PLAYING]
21:27 [MOTOR RUNNING]
21:30 Yesterday was awesome out in those dunes in Idaho.
21:56 But today, we're in Oregon.
21:58 One of the things Oregon's known for is fishing.
22:01 Now, I'm not really a fisherman.
22:03 I kind of like to go four-wheeling
22:04 more than any other sport.
22:06 But when you're here, you've got to go fishing.
22:09 So I tracked down a guy that's going to teach me
22:11 how to do some fly fishing.
22:14 Of course, I'm supposed to meet this guy a while ago.
22:17 And I'm already late, because I'm always late.
22:19 So we're going to have to see what this tundra does going
22:22 through the woods here, see if I can catch up to him.
22:25 I've never been fly fishing before.
22:27 But I'm pretty sure tonight, I'm eating fish for dinner.
22:29 [MOTOR RUNNING]
22:33 [LAUGHTER]
22:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:46 [SEALS BARKING]
22:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:57 So when you're running trails off-road like this,
23:07 you've got to be very careful.
23:08 You've got to be looking really far ahead
23:10 to see where you're going.
23:11 Luckily, the TRD Pro suspension is
23:14 designed for going fast off-road.
23:16 [MOTOR RUNNING]
23:19 But a lot of these fire roads, you
23:21 can have a good time ripping through the woods
23:23 with your truck.
23:24 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:27 Oh!
23:32 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:36 [SEAL BARKING]
23:39 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:49 So this is Travis.
24:01 How you doing, Travis?
24:02 How you doing?
24:03 Travis is going to show me how to do some fly fishing out
24:04 here.
24:05 I promised all the video team that we're going
24:06 to have fish for dinner tonight.
24:08 So you got all your gear?
24:10 You got any gear like that that I can wear?
24:12 Yeah, no problem.
24:13 Sweet.
24:13 Let's get you suited up.
24:14 All right.
24:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
24:21 So where do I put my sandwich?
24:23 [MUSIC PLAYING]
24:26 Here we go.
24:34 Let's see if we can find some fish.
24:36 All right.
24:38 There's one.
24:39 There's one.
24:41 There's three.
24:42 There's three?
24:43 I don't see any.
24:44 [LAUGHTER]
24:47 It's all 10 and 2.
24:48 Accelerate to stop.
24:49 Accelerate to stop.
24:51 So it's two casts.
24:52 It's a forward cast and a back cast.
24:56 Exactly.
24:57 Want to try?
24:58 Yeah.
24:59 All right, so--
25:00 It's already in the tree.
25:04 Yep.
25:04 Let's pull it out.
25:05 It'll come out.
25:07 Maybe.
25:09 How'd you do this?
25:10 I don't know.
25:11 [LAUGHTER]
25:14 There you go.
25:17 That'll work.
25:17 So even if I hit the tree, as long as I'm not
25:19 leaving it in there.
25:21 Yeah, I could do this all day.
25:23 This is fly fishing?
25:26 But it's fast.
25:28 We're all decked out.
25:29 We should be in the stream.
25:30 So right here, I'll take that.
25:31 All right.
25:32 Do the fish like to be in the logs around the sunshine?
25:35 So what you want to be doing is presenting the fly
25:37 early so that by the time it gets to the fish,
25:39 it's acting just like a--
25:40 Like a bug.
25:41 Like a bug.
25:42 All the fish are gone now.
25:47 Thanks.
25:48 I know we scared them away.
25:49 Thanks.
25:50 So go ahead and pick up and just put one right over there
25:52 against that grass weed bed.
25:55 That'll work.
25:57 We're going to let that swing right through the main channel.
25:59 [MUSIC PLAYING]
26:28 What can I get for you?
26:30 I need to get five orders of fish and chips for my crew.
26:33 OK.
26:33 Sounds good.
26:34 Anything else?
26:35 That should do it.
26:36 All right.
26:37 What?
26:40 What?
26:41 Good.
26:41 [LAUGHTER]
26:44 [MUSIC PLAYING]
26:58 Neah Bay, the most northwest point in the lower 48.
27:04 So put the truck through its paces, took it rock crawling,
27:10 took it out to the dunes, did some water crossings,
27:19 lived out of the thing, made a giant mess in here
27:22 with all types of road snacks, probably put on a few pounds
27:26 because all I've been doing is eating junk food.
27:28 And we are just about at the end of our trip.
27:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
27:34 This is the type of trip that any of you guys could do.
27:42 You don't have to go on a 4,000 mile trip.
27:45 You don't need a crazy overbuilt rock crawler or expedition
27:50 vehicle.
27:50 You just need a good pickup truck
27:52 that you can throw your gear in, you can live out of,
27:54 or make a giant mess in.
27:56 Go do something like this.
27:58 If just one of you takes a week off from your job
28:01 and goes on an adventure, mission accomplished.
28:03 [MUSIC PLAYING]
28:07 You have arrived at your destination.
28:09 The route guidance is now finished.
28:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
28:23 [LAUGHTER]
28:28 Whoa, this is way colder than the Gulf of Mexico.
28:32 We made it.
28:34 So that was over 3,500 miles in this truck from Mexico,
28:39 the Gulf of Mexico, to the Pacific Ocean and Canada.
28:44 Actually, you can't see it.
28:45 It's fogged in.
28:46 But Canada is right over there.
28:50 Hawaii is right over there.
28:51 I really think we need to go there next,
28:53 because this is way too cold.
28:54 That's it for Dirt Every Day.
28:57 We'll see you guys next time.
29:00 Woo-hoo, woo-hoo.
29:03 [MUSIC PLAYING]
29:06 Burr, burr, burr.
29:10 So what we're doing is we're going to jack up the truck,
29:12 because the bottom of the tire is flat.
29:14 We're going to turn that flat part to the top of the tire.
29:16 And it'll be fine.
29:19 But today, we're in Idaho looking for a PA.
29:23 We left him out here in the woods a couple of days ago.
29:25 You know, we've got to build a little character.
29:28 Let him live off the land.
29:30 See if he's going to survive.
29:31 [MUSIC PLAYING]
29:34 If you're the future owner of this Thunder truck, sorry.
29:39 I know nothing.
29:42 Boom.
29:43 It's a wrap.
