00:30 Top Truck Challenge 2015.
00:35 Tank trap, 30 minutes to complete this course.
00:37 Let's see who can make it fastest across the finish line.
00:42 We pick up with Adam in his International Scout
00:45 coal burner as he enters the tank trap.
00:49 Good luck.
00:49 My name's Adam Furlong.
00:55 Brought my International Scout here with the 12-valve Cummins
00:58 in it.
00:58 I bought this '79 Scout off the original owner, bone stock.
01:03 Stripped her down, put in a 12-valve Cummins.
01:07 Did one ton axles, but they just weren't tough enough.
01:10 So had to go to some nine-ton planetary axles
01:13 and some 54-inch boggers, and we'll see
01:15 what kind of damage we can do.
01:18 Uh-oh.
01:19 Didn't quite make it to the fields.
01:20 He's got some sort of electrical problem.
01:25 See if he can figure this out, get this thing fired back up.
01:28 [CLICKING]
01:31 [ENGINE REVVING]
01:35 Ah!
01:36 Comes back to life.
01:37 He's shaking his head like, what the heck was that all about?
01:40 And he's off.
01:41 Let's see if he can get up to hole number one.
01:44 He's not driving so calmly now.
01:46 He seems a little bit more hurried.
01:48 Spend a lot of time trying to get those electrical problems
01:50 working.
01:51 And he's dead again.
01:52 Sounds like the one with the extra battery is going to be
01:54 a little bit more--
01:57 he's fighting with it.
01:59 He's getting over the logs.
02:01 Remember, you can't see him, but there's a bunch of logs right
02:03 there below hole number one.
02:05 Finally, he crawls into hole number two,
02:07 but it sounds like the RPMs are a lot higher
02:10 than his wheel speed.
02:12 Something seems amiss.
02:13 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:16 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:20 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:23 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:27 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:29 Now, he's into hole number two.
02:31 He's trying to work his way up that wall.
02:33 [ENGINE REVVING]
02:36 Every time he hits the gas, he sets up
02:39 black plume of smoke up into the air,
02:40 killing the mosquitoes while he's at it.
02:44 Drops back in.
02:45 Going to try again.
02:46 Not going.
02:52 [INAUDIBLE]
02:56 He kicks it.
03:01 He kicks-- he literally-- he kicks the mule,
03:03 gets it going again.
03:04 Let's see if he can get up hole number two without winching,
03:07 because winching would really kill his time again.
03:09 He's spent a lot of time down here, and--
03:13 yes, he's got a lucky break.
03:14 He's out of hole two without winching.
03:17 Let's see if he can salvage this good run.
03:19 He's got a couple problems going on right now.
03:21 His tranny is slipping again.
03:22 He's going to try winching out of the canyon.
03:25 He's got some electrical issues, so his motor keeps cutting out.
03:28 He's got a lot of problems right here, which
03:30 is going to kill his good run.
03:31 And the winch says no more right at this point.
03:35 Tranny problems, electrical problems, overheating,
03:38 and a winch problem.
03:39 Looks like he's about done.
03:42 On your mark.
03:44 Get set.
03:45 Go.
03:46 And Dan represents another Canadian flag
03:52 gracing the alleyways of the tank trap.
03:57 Dan Osterhout from Alberta, Canada.
04:00 And I'm driving a 1970-ish Chevy.
04:03 And I'm here at Top Truck Challenge 2015.
04:05 And Dan, I've just got to interrupt you.
04:07 This is one of my personal favorite rigs.
04:09 It's so simple.
04:10 This GMC is an injected 427 V8.
04:14 It's got twin steering Rockwells.
04:15 That's all common fare.
04:17 But it's got a boomerang cantilever suspension
04:19 with 16 inches of travel, 49 inch IROX,
04:22 Voodoo rope front and rear.
04:24 This thing is the vehicle to watch.
04:26 [ENGINE REVVING]
04:40 Dan's into the tank trap.
04:42 37 seconds, he's already clearing hole two.
04:45 This is amazing.
04:45 To make it more fun, the axis way into hole number three,
05:04 we've put a huge log.
05:05 But that doesn't slow Dan down at all.
05:08 [ENGINE REVVING]
05:11 Splash down into hole number four.
05:20 Now remember, at the other end of hole number four
05:22 is a steep wall.
05:23 But what-- well, Dan just totally stops.
05:26 He's not even going to challenge that wall.
05:28 He's going directly to winch.
05:30 That may be a smart move, because that solid wall
05:32 has taken out a few competitors in the past.
05:35 Hold on.
05:36 [INAUDIBLE]
05:37 [ENGINE REVVING]
05:40 Three minutes up to hole four, two minutes worth of winching,
05:51 and he's into hole five.
05:52 Like I said, to be successful here,
06:04 all you need is a great driver, a cool-headed spotter,
06:07 and a motor that will keep going.
06:09 Listen to that thing.
06:10 It's just gobbling up air without a hesitation.
06:13 [ENGINE REVVING]
06:16 [ENGINE REVVING]
06:20 Spotter just looked at me and asked me
06:39 if that was the finish 50 feet in front of him.
06:41 And I said yes, and he looked kind of surprised.
06:43 [ENGINE REVVING]
06:46 And there it goes.
06:49 The spotter's got to cross the line with him.
06:51 One, and the spotter finishes.
06:53 There you go.
06:55 Woo-hoo.
06:57 Congratulations, guys.
06:59 You rocked that course.
07:00 It feels good, huh?
07:01 Yes, absolutely.
07:02 All right.
07:03 Well, they're going to go relax a little bit.
07:05 That was a little too quick for them.
07:06 But man, what an exciting day.
07:07 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:10 My name's Jason Moon.
07:13 I'm from Medford, Oregon, with my '91 K5 Blazer.
07:16 Built by myself and my son and my son-in-law
07:19 in the last three weeks.
07:20 Put a 632 big block Chevy in it, dual cases, Rockwells, '54s.
07:25 We're glad to be here.
07:26 I think that if we can remain in the middle of the pack
07:29 in the 50 percentile, we'll be doing real good.
07:32 There's a lot of really good drivers here,
07:34 very capable rigs.
07:36 And I think that the competition is going
07:37 to be really stiff this year.
07:39 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:42 [ENGINE REVVING]
07:46 Now, Jason Moon has had a hit and miss experience
08:10 here at Top Truck Challenge.
08:11 He's had a lot of breakage, about every single axle shaft
08:14 he's got.
08:15 He's had a lot of problems with this huge motor.
08:17 But can he pull out a miracle here in the tank trap?
08:21 Let's find out.
08:22 So far, so good.
08:24 So he's in this ledge.
08:25 He's got to get over it.
08:27 He's a very heavy rig, but well-protected.
08:30 [ENGINE REVVING]
08:33 There, now under his own power and winch,
08:38 he's slowly making some progress.
08:39 [ENGINE REVVING]
08:42 [INAUDIBLE]
08:43 Take it in.
08:45 Come on, baby.
08:46 Get in.
08:47 [ENGINE REVVING]
08:50 Well, it sounds like he's broken another axle.
08:57 And if you had smell-o-vision, you
08:59 could tell that he's burning really rich.
09:02 Also, if you've got 3D goggles, it looks like it's really here.
09:07 Both axle shafts on the side of the wall,
09:09 where he needs the tracks the most, are not functioning.
09:12 So he's under winch power.
09:14 Also, you can already start feeling the heat wave coming
09:17 off that motor.
09:18 It's got to be getting hot.
09:19 [ENGINE REVVING]
09:22 [INAUDIBLE]
09:23 So now to compound his problems, he's lost his steering.
09:27 He has no drive power on the driver's side of the vehicle
09:31 where all the weight is.
09:33 His winch is tight, hot.
09:36 Motor's hot.
09:38 He's in a bad predicament.
09:39 [ENGINE REVVING]
09:43 So you can see, just the power's all on the wrong side.
09:48 He'd be doing a whole lot better if the tires that were spinning
09:51 were on the driver's side, where all the weight is.
09:56 Hopefully, he can get to the ledge section
09:57 where things level out just a bit.
09:59 Now he's down to one-wheel drive.
10:02 He lost the other axle shaft in the rear
10:05 on the passenger side.
10:07 He's one leg of dog.
10:08 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:09 How much time we got left?
10:10 10 seconds.
10:11 10 seconds.
10:14 Good job, guys.
10:15 Good try.
10:15 Get recovery down here.
10:17 Fire it up.
10:18 OK, recovery heads up.
10:19 We have Jake, Brian, and Roswell,
10:20 laying low, level 14.
10:23 Fire extinguisher locations are four in the bed,
10:25 one on the dash.
10:27 Battery locations are both in the back, one on each side.
10:31 Copy that.
10:31 We're going to send them.
10:33 All right, Jake, you ready for this?
10:35 You do something cool, I promise you
10:36 we'll make you famous, buddy.
10:38 On your mark, get set, go.
10:40 [HORN HONKING]
10:41 [ENGINE REVVING]
10:44 My name is Jake Brazier.
10:51 I'm from Choice, Lansing, Saskatchewan.
10:53 This was the first vehicle I ever purchased.
10:55 It was originally an '85 4Runner.
10:58 And I rolled that, made it into a pickup truck,
11:02 put a Toyota Supra motor in it a couple of years ago,
11:06 ended up putting 1 tons under it.
11:08 Yeah, it is what it is today.
11:10 It usually gets the job done.
11:12 Jake and Casey have had a string of bad luck
11:19 here at Top Truck Challenge.
11:21 Broken winch cables, rolled over rigs,
11:25 everything's been against him.
11:26 In fact, before he even got here, he blew his motor.
11:28 So he put in a brand new Toyota Supra turbocharged motor
11:32 into it.
11:32 He didn't even know his spotter until a couple of weeks
11:35 ago, where he met him at another event.
11:37 So brand new crew, new motor.
11:39 You know, oh, this guy's the underdog.
11:41 And the Toyota crowd is cheering for him.
11:44 Let's see how he does here in the tank trap.
11:46 Now, he's already got some issues here
11:47 in the hole number two.
11:49 But he's making it.
11:50 He's crawling it.
11:52 Now, look at that.
11:52 You can see how he's feathering his tires into the rock ledge.
11:56 Let's see if he needs to winch out of this.
12:01 And no, he hooks up.
12:03 Once again, there's a lot to be said
12:04 about light and nimble rigs.
12:07 He's getting up in the canyon section.
12:09 And look at that excellent driving.
12:11 He knows when to feather his tires back and forth
12:13 to get the right traction into the wall, away from the wall,
12:16 up the wall.
12:17 He's straddling it, getting that rear axle into the mud.
12:21 Oh, this guy's doing great.
12:23 Now, this is where his experience is shining.
12:26 And that little Toyota has a can-do attitude.
12:30 It hasn't died yet.
12:32 Looks like that hole right in the middle of the canyon
12:38 section is going to stick him for a bit.
12:41 Let's see if he can--
12:42 no, he's not even going to winch.
12:44 Casey's staying in the cab.
12:45 And they're going for a ride.
12:48 He's in the ledges and gets air on the log
12:50 right before hole number three.
12:53 Settles it down a bit.
12:54 Starts it up.
13:00 Dumps the clutch, and he's into the mud.
13:01 Man, they are just blazing through this trail.
13:09 In fact, the cameramen are having problems
13:11 keeping up with him.
13:13 I'm having problems keeping up with him.
13:15 Hole four sticks him.
13:16 That hole has stuck most everybody.
13:19 It's got that huge, steep ledge at the end.
13:27 He's made it to hole four in four minutes and 40 seconds.
13:32 Great run.
13:32 That 3.0 is just ripping, screaming away,
13:49 pegging it out against the rev limiter.
13:51 He's trying a totally different line.
13:57 He's trying the far right side of the course.
13:59 Let's see if he can get some traction.
14:01 Oh, right at the critical moment, his motor stalls.
14:04 But it comes back to life.
14:09 He's in it.
14:26 [INAUDIBLE]
14:27 Definitely the motor is not happy right now,
14:35 but he's still on his own power.
14:37 With a little bit of winch assist,
14:39 he's ready for the next plunge.
14:40 Oh, he's digging the China.
14:56 Oh, no.
14:56 OK, the snatch block is working.
15:07 He's got very little power left in that winch,
15:09 so they've doubled it up, gone to the snatch block.
15:12 It is helping, but I don't think he's
15:14 going to make it because there's just a lot of distance
15:17 to cover with a winch with that low battery.
15:20 Go.
15:21 Try to start it.
15:31 If I could pull you, I would.
15:38 We're done.
15:40 Calling it?
15:41 Calling it.
15:42 Calling it?
15:42 All right, they called it.
15:44 Jake, you didn't disappoint.
15:45 You gave it hell.
15:46 You know, let me give you some stats.
15:49 You were all the way to hole four in four minutes.
15:52 You spent four minutes winching, then you got here,
15:54 blitzing quick.
15:55 So any time you were driving, your skill in the canyon
15:58 was impressive.
15:59 Your Toyota held together.
16:01 Everything seemed to be going, and right here, just nothing.
16:04 You've got to feel like, ugh.
16:06 Yeah, it sucks.
16:09 Good luck to you, buddy.
16:10 You got your seat belt on?
16:12 On your mark, get set, go.
16:15 [ENGINE REVVING]
16:18 I'm Mike Jaskolski from Laramie, Wyoming.
16:24 I drive a 1976 K5 Blazer we call Thumper.
16:28 Big motor, it's a 555, great motor.
16:31 205, 203 doubler.
16:33 We've got a 14 bolt in the rear, RCV 300M axles back there,
16:36 also.
16:37 Overall, it's a pretty well-built rig.
16:40 We hope it doesn't break.
16:42 [CHUCKLES]
16:44 And he says he hopes it doesn't break,
16:46 but that's what the tank trap is all about.
16:48 We build it to break it.
16:51 He enters hole number one, and he's
16:52 going up to hole number two.
16:53 Let's see how well he does in hole number two.
16:58 He's picking a really high-- whoa, he's over.
17:00 We have a water rescue.
17:02 Hole number two.
17:03 Well, we didn't break him, but it looks like we stopped him.
17:09 Very good, very good.
17:11 You OK, buddy?
17:12 Mike's had a very interesting time here
17:13 at Top Truck Challenge.
17:14 He's broken some driveline.
17:15 He's caught on fire.
17:16 And now, he just entered the tank trap and rolled over.
17:20 Sounds like fun.
17:21 Let's check it out.
17:22 I don't think this is where Mike wanted
17:30 to be in hole number two.
17:32 He's had quite an interesting experience here
17:34 at Top Truck Challenge.
17:36 Now he's got to figure out how he can right this puppy
17:38 and get Thumper up through that canyon.
17:40 Any updates down there, Sparky?
17:45 We're curious.
17:46 We're done.
17:51 Mike, you still in it?
17:51 We're calling.
17:52 You ready, buddy?
17:53 That's it.
17:54 And Mike Jokulski calls Uncle.
17:56 He's had enough.
17:57 They say they quit right here in the tank trap.
18:00 Bring in the rescue crew.
18:02 Mike, you've had quite the experience here.
18:04 What do you think of Top Truck Challenge this year?
18:07 It's a tough event.
18:08 I just-- I goofed up what I did.
18:10 I'd given it to young and coming up there,
18:12 I couldn't see over that big old monstrosity of a hood
18:15 and too far to the left.
18:17 And next thing you know, I was trying to get my buddy out
18:20 of the water.
18:21 Well, we're glad you're all OK.
18:23 We're going to see if we can extract you here.
18:25 It's been a close competition this entire event.
18:28 Any regrets?
18:30 No, no regrets.
18:31 I mean, everybody's been awesome.
18:33 Granted, if I would have done good here,
18:35 it may have been somewhere, but it doesn't matter
18:38 because it's all about the camaraderie.
18:40 All these guys we've met here are great.
18:43 Everybody's willing to help everybody.
18:44 It's incredible.
18:45 It's fun.
18:46 It's great.
18:47 Great to see this in the four-wheel drive community.
18:49 Well, welcome to the Top Truck family.
18:51 It is really a family, and it's a unique position to be in.
18:54 You know, we said before that this tank trap was going
18:58 to make it or break it.
18:59 Since the field was so close and the scores were so tight,
19:02 this was going to do it.
19:03 So I hate to tell you, buddy, but this
19:05 might have done it for you.
19:06 Oh, I know it does.
19:07 You want to go in the water?
19:09 No, thank you.
19:09 OK.
19:10 [LAUGHTER]
19:11 Thanks, Mike.
19:11 Thanks.
19:12 Thanks a lot.
19:12 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
19:17 Yes, this is extraction Top Truck style.
19:20 The dust settles, the smoke clears, the engines cool,
19:29 and everyone gathers around the bonfire
19:31 to enjoy their newfound friendships.
19:34 They're part of the Top Truck family.
19:38 Top Truck challenge, how'd you like it?
19:41 Now, who won the bling?
19:43 So on to the awards, which you all came here for.
19:46 First and second place are separated
19:48 by 2/10 of a point.
19:49 That's how close it was.
19:52 Second and third place are separated by less than a point.
19:56 You guys brought it this year.
19:58 You gave it your all.
20:00 Third place, team number five, Ryan Agin and Josh Hardy.
20:03 [APPLAUSE]
20:14 Second place, Chris Bowman and James Peckard.
20:17 [APPLAUSE]
20:26 On the side of the truck, it says my name,
20:27 but it should say Team Bowman, because without all
20:29 these guys, we couldn't be here.
20:30 So.
20:31 [APPLAUSE]
20:39 And what we've all been waiting for.
20:41 First place, your winner of the 2015 Top Truck Challenge,
20:46 team number eight, Dan Osterhaus.
20:48 [APPLAUSE]
21:14 Standing with the champions of the 2015 Top Truck Challenge,
21:18 man, you guys really brought it this year.
21:20 What was the most exhilarating moment of Top Truck Challenge?
21:24 I would say it's the teamwork and everyone coming together
21:27 to get everyone that's broken back together
21:30 and on the course again.
21:31 And what was your favorite event out of Top Truck Challenge?
21:34 The tank trap.
21:35 My favorite.
21:36 Very, very fun course.
21:38 Hard, very hard, but yeah, it was a good course.
21:42 Was there any one moment that was the most exhilarating,
21:44 where the adrenaline was really pumping?
21:46 Yeah, tank trap.
21:48 100% the tank trap.
21:49 That was the most adrenaline I had.
21:51 We had too much fun coming out of that one.
21:53 That was good.
21:54 Well, congratulations, guys.
21:55 You just brought your game face on.
21:58 The competition was so close, down to hundreds of points,
22:02 and these guys walked away the victors.
22:04 Congratulations.
22:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:09 It's got a ton of pulling power.
22:11 You saw it.
22:12 [TIRES SCREECHING]
22:14 [TIRES SCREECHING]
22:17 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:20, He doesn't give way.
22:50 Woo!
22:51 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:54 [TIRES SCREECHING]
22:58 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:01 [TIRES SCREECHING]
23:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:08 [TIRES SCREECHING]
23:12 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:17 All about our face built into everything.
23:20 Woo!
23:21 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:24 [TIRES SCREECHING]
23:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
23:31 And there it goes.
