00:00 look. It's been a while and I just wanted to be able to show you guys and myself
00:04 what it looks like at the end of the season after such an overhaul project
00:09 that we did this spring. Which I'll explain and we'll do, we'll harken back
00:13 and show you some video from before of what it looked like. But also I brought
00:16 some perennials and a trellis and a couple of things that
00:21 Gardener's Supply sent out for Monica and Nick to use in their garden. So first
00:25 up I did want to show you these pretty hydrangeas. I'm not sure that I actually
00:28 showed the front yard in prior videos but there was like potentias right? Yeah
00:33 they had just put stuff in here, the people that built that, the company that
00:36 built the house and there was two fine lines right in front of the windows. Oh
00:40 lovely. And yellow potentias and you know it was kind of sad to take them out by
00:44 the second year because they were starting to look pretty but I wanted
00:47 something different. But you're right, I mean fine lines in front of the windows
00:50 that's a type of buckthorn and they would totally block you. They would block
00:53 the window and potentias I do think they're sweet little flowers and they're
00:57 pretty but they're just not my favorite thing. And then in this little strip they
01:01 put little four-inch gilardias and blue grasses that I am now picking. Oh they're
01:07 already seeded in there? Oh my gosh. Blue grass from them doing that. Aaron will probably
01:11 be so proud of you for pulling those. He's not a fan of the blue grasses. Oh I
01:15 you know I think they're pretty but I think it just looks so dinky having
01:18 these four-inch plants. So we did Julia Jane boxwoods. I might eventually, since
01:22 they're not gonna get huge, put one in or something else in between. It's nice though because you can
01:26 walk through. It's like a little walkway. Nick likes it that he can get out of his
01:29 truck easily. Yeah you know. So back to the hydrangeas. What variety are
01:33 these? Those are little quick fires. Oh they're so pretty. I love them. I like how
01:39 their panicles are a little bit more open. I do too. A little bit more structural.
01:43 Yeah yeah. They're a little funky looking with their shape. Like Nick's
01:46 like that they he's like they're such a funny shape. I'm like just give them a
01:50 couple years. Yeah. They'll be fine. They look great. Okay now take us down.
01:53 Take us. Let's go. Take us back. We gotta see this. All right.
01:58 Excuse the yellow buckets but those are full of dirt that I couldn't lift. Oh
02:02 well we all have those kind of buckets hanging out. This is the deepest gravel in all
02:08 the land. Nick and I did this and we got a little carried away. It already looks
02:13 so pretty even from here. Oh we're gonna take this in slow.
02:26 Cute heavenly music. Oh my goodness. Look at this you guys. Look at the grass.
02:35 Monica do you love this? Oh my gosh. I and this is the first time Nick mowed it
02:40 this morning and this is the first time I've seen it mowed and it just oh. You
02:45 know first year grass is always tough because yeah you're gonna always deal
02:48 with some broadleaves. Yeah. And you know we hand pulled a lot of ours. I've been
02:51 doing that. Have you been doing that? Yeah. Because believe me this was a lot worse.
02:55 You eventually get on top of it. Yeah. And this is a small enough space where it
02:58 shouldn't you know be too bad. Yeah. Yeah. But okay I got to start back at the
03:03 beginning again. Mostly because I missed this right here and this is such a huge
03:07 piece of the landscape. Nick built this and does he have plans like a link to
03:12 the plans? I remember that being a common question and I never could find it. We do
03:16 have a link although he changed. Oh did he change stuff? Quite a bit just to fit
03:20 what we wanted. Yeah. But I do have a link to the original plan. So I'll try to
03:23 remember to get that link and put it down below. So you know you do have to
03:27 make adjustments oftentimes if you're building something to you know custom
03:30 fit an area. But I think this looks so great and I love the black stain on it.
03:35 And you've got a couple of honeysuckles right here. Then those are just gonna
03:39 fill this up so fast. They've already grown a tremendous amount since when we
03:43 put them in. And they finally took off. They kind of stayed the same for like a month or two.
03:48 And then boom. They just grew in like a couple of weeks. Did that. And you know
03:52 Pedro and his guys came in and they put in this pathway here and just butted it
03:56 right up to the patio which made it feel like a bigger patio area. I like that
04:00 instead of trying to fit a walkway in here and then you know what do you do
04:04 in the interim? Do you do like a skinny little flower bed? No. Oh yeah no. And now
04:09 we just we're gonna fill it in with that blocking stuff. Yes. Sand. Mm-hmm. Which
04:14 will be good because I spent I don't know how long weeding this the other day.
04:17 Oh no good. Yeah. And so and it was I had to like lift up rocks to get to them. They're
04:22 already coming back up. It just looks so phenomenal. So let's take a look back
04:26 really quick. Let's have a before shot of this space. Because what we were dealing
04:31 with was a flower bed that started at the house and then just sloped down. And
04:35 this is in a tremendously deep backyard. So it was quite a slope. And you know I
04:40 asked Monica and Nick what they wanted out of this space. And you guys said
04:42 raised beds. A little bit of grass. And I think that was kind of the yeah the two
04:49 things you wanted. And I wanted the arbor. Yeah you did want the arbor. Yeah. So we made sure to
04:53 work all of those things in. But initially I thought we've got to handle
04:57 this slope. Because if you want to have raised beds in this space it's gonna be
05:00 really hard. I mean you can do it. People do it all the time. And they do a good
05:04 job of it. You know like doing raised beds at different levels. And you know
05:07 leveling out a space. And then doing a cut down and doing another one. But just
05:11 kind of wanted that like cozy feel. So Pedro and his crew came in. They built. Oh my word.
05:20 That'll only go off for like five to ten minutes. Nice. Well we'll get a we'll get
05:25 to see it all nice and saturated. Okay. Anyway sprinklers are going. So they
05:32 came in. They built up this area. In fact as they were leveling this bottom part
05:36 they would use the soil. And they would come and backfill behind the rocks. And
05:40 we went and picked out some stairs. So there's three stairs on this side. And
05:45 two stairs here. Because the level does change a little bit. And then there's one
05:50 stair over on the other side. But what that did was created that sunken garden
05:54 feel. And it just it made your space feel so much bigger. Oh my gosh. I can't
05:58 believe how much bigger. Yeah. It seems. And I see you're taking the no trim
06:02 approach to your tomatoes like me. Well yeah. One of them is completely fallen
06:08 down. Oh really? The one over there. If you go over there. Like the ground behind
06:11 those last back two is completely covered with tomato plant. Oh lovely. Well
06:16 we're gonna take a look through here. Maybe we'll let the grass sprinklers run
06:19 their course. Yeah I'm sorry I forgot those. I didn't realize those were gonna
06:22 go off. That's fine. Right now. You know what this would be a great time to unload the
06:26 truck. We'll go get all the plants out. Perfect. The trellis out. And that way
06:29 we'll have that part ready. Okay first off Monica Gardener Supply sent you out a
06:33 really cushy mat. Oh these are nice. Isn't that nice? Yes. I've been real
06:38 tempted to use it. Oh well that's so sweet. And then they sent also sent you out a
06:43 trowel. Oh how nice. Brand new one. Yeah. Nick will like that. He likes this kind of grip. Oh perfect. On things.
06:48 And having the little saw. Yeah. Oh how sweet. Oh my. The plants didn't ride super
06:54 well. I had to slam on my brakes once. On the way over. These are beautiful. Aren't they
06:58 gorgeous? So Magic Show Purple Illusion Veronica. And then we've got some Fun and
07:06 Games Capture the Flag Hooker Rats. I love that. Isn't that so pretty? And these will
07:10 shoot up stalks with white flowers in the spring. Here I'll get my cart. Oh that
07:15 would be helpful. Yeah. So pretty. I know it's excited when they arrived yesterday
07:24 when they had blooms on them. Yeah. That's always fun. Oh they just arrived
07:29 yesterday? Uh-huh. No what they look so fresh. I was like I'm missing some. They're
07:33 way up there dang it. Oh look how pretty the trellis is. Isn't the trellis beautiful?
07:36 Oh it's a Gothic Arch wall trellis. I think it's what it's called. Yeah that's the one
07:40 we wanted. Yeah. That kind of matches the arbor. I've been planting all day so this
07:53 is just an extension of what I've been doing. Gotta handle stuff like this all the time.
07:58 Yep. I gotta say I'm really happy that we're not building raised beds today. Oh me too.
08:22 Or digging a million holes. Yeah. Let's just go set this where it's gonna go. Yeah. Oh
08:31 that looks pretty right there. Oh it's beautiful. And there's a Clematis right below it. What
08:36 color is that one? It's a purple that has a dark purple stripe. So purple with dark
08:40 purple stripe with the purple butterfly bush right here. And then these are a Red Daylily
08:45 that one of you guys sent out to Monica. Yeah it was so sweet. They came in like little
08:49 starts and look at how great. Yeah. And that'll look pretty right in front of the purple color.
08:54 And then these are the Anik Rose. Yes they're so pink. Pink and then there's the Jacobson
08:59 Pine. I have already cut this back once. The rhubarb. I'm gonna try not to shadow everything
09:04 here. It was like up to here and I cut it completely back to the ground and this was
09:08 like a couple weeks later. Oh my goodness. It's a really pretty texture. This is suffering.
09:14 It suffers. Yeah. You know Tickle Creek Whitebark Birch it looks like I already felt around
09:20 just a minute ago in the soil. It feels plenty wet. Did it suffer from any kind of bug this
09:24 year? We actually wondered if it had mites at one point. Oh really? But then suddenly
09:29 I didn't see signs of them anymore so I didn't spray it. Might have been a mistake so I'm
09:32 just hoping it'll bounce back next year. Yeah it'll probably do that. Okay guys so the water
09:36 has turned off again so we can continue our tour but look at it from this direction. The
09:43 rock walls just added so much. Look at our little volunteer. Oh that is cute. Out of
09:47 the rocks. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I couldn't bear to pull it. So you guys this trellis right
09:53 here they are going to be putting it on the wall. I think Nick wanted to do that. Yeah.
09:57 So we'll just leave the wall brackets and you guys can handle it. Yeah we can do that
10:01 later. But that is beautiful right there. I love it and I love that the shape of these
10:04 matches sort of. The shape of these. It's very similar you know. So I think that's a
10:10 really good look. The source of our hot sauce. Habaneros. And the Caribbean Red Hots. Oh
10:15 very nice. I see some great big tomatoes coming out of this one right here. My goodness. And
10:20 look at it. Oh. I'm so overwhelmed about having to like what do I do with it? Just start cutting
10:26 it back. Yeah. What you need to do is bring Nick's truck and just cut them all back put
10:31 them in the truck and bring them to my house. Oh yeah. Bethany will feed them to her pigs.
10:34 That way you don't have to put them in your. I mean that'll be. I was kind of thinking
10:38 I was just going to have to fill big like yard bags and just throw them away as we had
10:41 room because what else are we going to do? Yeah. We're going to just sneak back here
10:45 though real quick. Just to take a look at the lilac. There's a lilac there. Is that
10:50 what color? That's the white one. And then there's three North Pole Arbs and then there's
10:54 a purple lilac right there. So the lilac here will kind of create an arch over this area
10:59 and then this one will be kind of this way and there'll be three spires in the back.
11:03 It's going to look so great. And then looking back this way do you after using this for
11:07 a season do you like having the open space or do you think you're going to put something
11:10 there? I think I'd like to put something there. I don't think that it was necessary to really
11:14 like at first I thought well maybe it'd be nice and make it easier. But there's no I
11:18 would like I would love like a little skinny fountain. Yeah. Like a little little bowl
11:23 that has like a little maybe a mini double or triple tier. Yeah. Something that makes
11:27 pretty noise. Yeah. That would be really cute. Yeah. Right here. Especially with all your
11:31 bird feeders too. It'd be really fun. We get so many birds back here. You've got that bird
11:34 bath which they they do like I'm sure. But it'd be nice to have some moving water back
11:38 here. Yeah. So in this bed there's a tomato and a massive basil plant. This is two basils
11:43 and one purple basil. Oh. This is the amazel basil. Yes. And it is. I've already made pesto
11:48 to freeze. Oh look. Oh my. Yep. There it is. She's chilling. That makes me excited. That's
11:55 the first one I've seen this year. Yeah. Cucumbers. Yeah. Care for a cucumber? Well my chickens
12:02 would love that. Eggplant. There's a Roma tomato right here. I mean clearly everything
12:08 is liking the raised bed mix that we put in here which is nice. So I haven't fertilized
12:12 it once. Oh really? Well we did the raised bed mix and I think we did. Did we do biotone
12:18 starter fertilizer in them? I can't remember. I don't think we did. I think we just did
12:21 it right in the raised bed. Fresh raised bed mix does the trick. Yeah. So I'll probably
12:24 need to put something in it next year. The roses are starting to grow up the trellis.
12:28 Or the arbor rather. And then the boxwoods here will create a nice hedge so that will
12:32 be like a shorn. Shorn? Is that a word? Shorn? Yeah. Hedge. Very nice tight hedge. Yeah.
12:38 Eventually. And then let's take a look. Oh I love the lines over here. I really like
12:44 how it all ended up. This is a weeping. A weeping cherry. Cherry. There's a spirea.
12:50 Echinacea. Yeah so there's three of the sombrero lemon yellow. Okay. This one's about done.
12:57 I need to cut those back. Oh the cutest little weeping blue spruce. Yeah. Right there. That's
13:02 a sester's blue. Is that? No. No. Correct. That's just a bush's lace. Bush's lace. Engelmann's
13:09 spruce. Yeah. Gotcha. There's a clarence iris right there. It's like a mauve-y. It's actually
13:14 a beautiful double purple. It's like a lavender purple and a dark purple mix. Oh. And then
13:19 the other one is I think just purple. Okay. Just plain purple. Gotcha. There's a barberry
13:26 there. That's a concord right? It is. Okay. And then there's a little baby forsythia.
13:32 This was another thing that was kind of struggling. I don't know if it got too wet. If it got
13:36 hit. Don't feel bad because all of my forsythias kind of just like melt and die. Oh really?
13:41 I had one take out of all the forsythias I planted. I thought that might be something
13:45 I have to replace. And then there is phlox in here but it's already all cut back because
13:49 it was done. So we might be planting some hookerillas back in here. Yeah. We'll see.
13:53 This area stays very shady. All of this ground. It would look beautiful. They'd be beautiful
13:57 right here too. There's a Tuamles red sentinel maple. There's the ivory halo dogwood. These
14:03 are winter berries right? Winter berries and this one. So I just have to get a little more
14:07 water to these. They've kind of started to. This is the one that gets the best water.
14:11 They're all pushing new growth. Yeah. I see new growth in all of them. So they're pushing
14:14 out of it. They were struggling a little bit but they're doing good. And this pine I'm
14:19 really happy. Is that an angel or something? A blue angel. Blue angel. Blue angel white
14:23 pine. Nice. And then an easy spirit rose. I couldn't resist that one. That's pretty.
14:30 How pretty they are. And it smells good. And then turning the corner here, these are the
14:35 surefire red begonias. You came and got these from us didn't you? I did. Yeah. I'm amazed.
14:40 They look good and they get, well you can see they get full sun. There's also the boxwood
14:46 cones right there. Okay so that's the update tour on how it's looking. You guys have done
14:50 a really good job. Thank you. It looks really good. And these are going to be so beautiful.
14:55 Oh it's, oh I can't wait. So what do you think? What were you thinking for these? So those
14:59 I was thinking. Let's go set them in a couple spots. See what you think. Yeah. Well, I don't
15:08 have anything back here yet. Okay do you want something to, well you've got a phlox right
15:13 where your foot is. Oh that's true. I suppose even like kind of, would those, how tall do
15:20 those get? 16 to 18. So not very, not very tall. I wonder if they would need to go like
15:25 in front right here. Yeah. You know I think what we're going to do is just move these
15:29 plants around and talk through some of the options. We'll get them planted and then I'll
15:33 show you guys. [Music]
15:54 [Music] [Music]
16:16 [Music] [Music]
16:38 Okay we got them all in and we ended up planting four of the Veronica and five of the Huccarella.
16:43 Planting right here, one of the Veronica, just a single plant right here because it's
16:47 just a really sweet purple accent and it looks beautiful up against those rocks. And then
16:52 two of the Huccarella at the base of the Japanese maple. And then as you swing to the left,
16:57 the other three Huccarella behind the serviceberry tree. So you know when this kind of fills
17:02 back in, there's the white phlox. These will be just a nice soft fluffy accent back there.
17:07 I think that's going to be really pretty. And then the other three Veronica ended up
17:11 at the base of the cherry tree right next to the yellow echinacea. That's going to be
17:14 a beautiful pairing. Oh, I love it. Love it. And just sitting here on the rock wall, you
17:20 can see the trellis over there that really just helps bridge the gap between the windows.
17:25 It just feels like a little oasis and I'm just so happy with the outcome. There's four
17:30 birds on your feeder. They were waiting just down the way on the neighbor's fence. They
17:37 cleaned those feeders in like less than a week. Really? We have to refill them. That's
17:43 so fun. Yeah. I just showed everybody where the plants ended up. Oh, good. Yeah. So pretty.
17:49 I love it. The breeze is getting to be a little much. A little much. After living with this
17:53 space for the season, what's your favorite part? Oh, that's hard to say. I love the raised
17:58 beds. Yeah. Just because I've had so much fun with the stuff I've been growing in them.
18:02 So I love that. And I love the look of looking out here, the bump outs and seeing the color
18:08 because that's what I see the most from the kitchen. Right. And gosh, it's hard to say.
18:14 I love the whole thing. I just love having such a pretty yard. Oh, it's so fun. And the
18:19 best part about coming over this way to do a project is we get to go out to dinner. So
18:24 we're going to go have some Thai food right now and enjoy the rest of our evening. I hope
18:28 you guys enjoyed the tour. Kind of a end of season update on how things are going in this
18:32 space. And who knows, maybe the next year we can come back and do another project of
18:36 some kind. Oh, yeah. We'll think of something awesome. Maybe we'll do a fountain project
18:40 of some kind. Oh, yes. Anyway, thank you guys so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed it.
18:44 And we will see you in the next video. Bye.
