03:04 - Hi, Norman.
03:12 - Hi, nice to meet you.
03:13 - Yeah, I finally meet you.
03:14 - Yes. - All right.
03:15 - The Enceladus frog has very unique habitat.
03:21 They are only found on the Higantes Islands
03:25 in karst forests.
03:26 - Is it why you're trying to imitate the karst limestones?
03:30 - Exactly.
03:31 During the day, they hide under rocks
03:33 in the limestone in the caves.
03:35 During the night, they come out,
03:37 they become active, they use the forest.
03:39 (speaking in foreign language)
03:44 - This is a female.
03:51 - How do you know?
03:53 - Well, with her, it's easy.
03:54 You see the white in the abdomen?
03:55 - All right.
03:56 - She is filled with eggs.
03:57 - Okay, so this is gravidal ready.
04:01 (speaking in foreign language)
04:04 - What do you think is the primary threat?
04:18 Why it arrived to this point
04:20 that we have now a species
04:22 that is already critically endangered?
04:24 - There is deforestation, there's charcoal production,
04:28 there is some quarrying of the limestones,
04:31 vandalism of the caves, digging for treasure hunting.
04:36 All of those things on an individual level,
04:38 we understand them because families need those activities.
04:42 But the frogs have needs, so where's that balance?
04:45 (speaking in foreign language)
04:49 - They've been digging.
04:52 - That's not usual.
04:54 - No, the wood chips on the floor.
04:56 We didn't notice that earlier.
04:58 - Always check.
05:03 Ah, there it is.
05:06 Ah, awesome.
05:08 Hey, there.
05:09 There you go.
05:10 You guys are lucky.
05:11 - What's that?
05:15 What did you find? - Eggs.
05:16 - Eggs? - Fertilized eggs.
05:18 - Fertilized eggs. - Awesome.
05:20 Okay.
05:21 - Is that a good thing?
05:22 - That's exactly what we want.
05:24 (speaking in foreign language)
05:28 - And that's why we're gonna put them in the nursery
05:30 to make sure that they maintain a nice humid environment.
05:35 - And make sure that they hatch.
05:36 - Yeah, make sure that they hatch.
05:37 We did not see them mating.
05:38 Even with keeping them in captivity,
05:40 there's still so many secrets to find out about this frog.

08:12 - It's the only critically endangered amphibian
08:15 in the Philippines with native Philippine amphibians
08:18 at the time.
08:19 Conservation, it's challenging career choice.
08:21 Funding is always difficult.
08:23 And two, time.
08:24 The Higantes Islands are in the Visayan Sea.
08:27 It takes effort to do the field work.
08:30 And then it takes a lot of effort to get all the permits,
08:33 everything necessary to get these frogs back to captivity.
