00:00 Jack Harlow, stop bothering me. I'm not gonna date you.
00:03 Hello, I'm Mindy Kaling and I'm playing Pop Quiz with Marie Claire.
00:08 Whoa, that was no joke.
00:11 What is the best gift you've ever received?
00:14 My children. Just kidding, I wouldn't answer it that way.
00:17 My children are great, but the best gift I've ever received?
00:20 First is a grand piano that my former boss Robert Greenblatt gave me.
00:25 And Ike Barinholtz, my old co-star on The Mindy Project, when we wrapped after six seasons,
00:30 he gave me a Rolex. Yeah, Ike Barinholtz. Too much money on that guy.
00:35 Violence.
00:39 What is the last text that I sent? Well, better find out.
00:44 Jack Harlow, stop bothering me. I'm not gonna date you.
00:47 That's pretty interesting. Just kidding, I've met him once. He doesn't know who I am.
00:51 No, I didn't. I met him and he said to me, I met him at the Met Gala and he said to me,
00:57 "My mom would be so excited if you knew I was meeting you."
00:59 And I was like, "Oh my God, kill me. I'm that old?"
01:02 I'm sure his mom is lovely, but...
01:04 My last text that I sent was to BJ Novak and it said,
01:10 "Are you coming to dinner? Please answer so we can order food."
01:13 What is the word your friends would use to describe you?
01:19 I wish it was like luminous or generous. It's definitely impatient.
01:24 The last song you got stuck in your head. Okay, this is just like Jack Harlow Central.
01:30 I was listening to First Class like on repeat at my house. My assistants kept telling me they're like,
01:34 "It's like enough." Okay, I'm not gonna talk about Jack Harlow anymore. It's fine. We'll move on.
01:39 What is a word that makes you cringe? Oh, woke. That word. It makes everybody cringe.
01:46 We use it too much. Oh my gosh. Okay, this is a hostile question. Last book I read.
01:53 You think I read books? It should have been like, "Last magazine I skimmed at the doctor's office."
01:59 Okay, the last book I read was NW by Zadie Smith.
02:04 Favorite dance move? Show us. I'm a bad dancer. I've been told that multiple times.
02:14 I actually have a friend, Tracy Wigfield. Back when people used to do lip sync battle and they
02:18 asked me to do it, I was so excited. I was like, "Oh, I'll dance and do my lip syncing." And at the
02:23 Mindy Project, all the writers were like, "Don't do that. Your career will be over if people can
02:30 see you dance." So I am a bad dancer. I guess the only dance that I would do, I really use my hands
02:36 a lot. So I think this is my move. I'm really feeling the music. That's it.
02:43 How did you make your first dollar? Okay, this is going to really age me. I worked at a video store
02:51 in the suburbs of Boston back when they were actual videos. And they turned from videos to DVDs.
02:59 But yeah, that's how I made my first money. What should every woman try at least once in her life?
03:07 I think it's important for women to live alone, if you can, at least once. I think being okay
03:14 with being by yourself is important. I think it's actually important for men too. But if you have
03:20 the opportunity to do that and the means, I highly recommend. What is my guilty pleasure watch?
03:28 So I do not believe in the term guilty pleasures because I tend to think as someone who writes
03:33 things that star women, guilty pleasures are 90% things that star women. Men don't think of the
03:40 Transformers or Top Gun as guilty pleasures. They're just like, "It's my pleasure. I love it."
03:44 And with women, we're like, "I can't believe I like Real Housewives or I like this." And it's
03:49 like, "No, I like what I like." So I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I can tell I'm going to be
03:56 finding this in my bra later tonight. Do you have any secret talents? Show us. No, I've monetized all
04:02 of my talents. You've seen everything. In fact, I've monetized things that I'm not even good at.
04:07 I'm fully eating it now. Oh, go-to late night snack. So I have never gotten leftovers from a
04:18 restaurant and not eaten it that night. So I would say anything that I won't go out to dinner, I'll
04:23 eat that around like 1130. The other thing I love late at night is popcorn, which is a recipe for
04:29 kernels in your teeth when you wake up. But I am what I am. What makes you feel most powerful and
04:37 confident? This is a simple answer, but it's something I think women are embarrassed to talk
04:44 about. Being wealthy. My power came from me having enough money that I can have independence,
04:51 and that's what makes me feel confident. So I had kids later in my life, but I did it so that
04:56 I could take care of them by myself, and that makes me feel really good. What advice would you
05:04 give your younger self? So this would work if my younger self was someone who was really amenable
05:10 and open-minded, but as a young person, I thought I knew all the answers and that everyone around me
05:17 was dumb, so I don't know that I would listen to it. But the advice that I would try to impart on
05:23 them is to never take nude photos of myself. That's it. And there's other bigger things,
05:30 but I think if you can go through your life without having yourself captured naked on your
05:34 phone, then I think you're gonna be okay. The number one thing on my bucket list.
05:44 The number one thing on my bucket list this week is to direct a movie.
05:48 What is my most star-struck moment? Well, one time I was going to Vegas to promote a movie.
05:57 On the way back, they kind of randomly assigned you on a jet to go back to LA, and it was just
06:04 me and Bradley Cooper. And I was like, "Okay, well, he's Bradley Cooper. He's here to promote
06:09 A Star is Born. I'll just sit at the back, and he can sit with his reps." And he just came over
06:15 and was like, "Hey, Mindy, how's it going? What's going on with your life?" And we spent,
06:19 I think it was the best 45 minutes of my life. He had questions about my life. That's how you
06:27 know he's well-raised. He was asking about boring old me. But like with a lot of smart people who
06:33 are inquisitive, it got really deep really fast. And then when the plane landed, I felt like I was
06:39 still in the trance. And he's like, "Okay, bye." And I was like, "Oh, what about Harvey Bourbon?"
06:43 The last silver balloon is the bonus question. How do you fit wellness into your everyday life?
06:51 So for me, wellness, I feel well, and it's easy for me to walk or run 12 to 15 miles a week.
06:57 It's like my antidepressant. Drink a ton of water. I wake up in the morning, and I drink
07:03 16 ounces of water immediately while I'm sitting in bed before I do anything.
07:08 Wellness to me is making sure that I have a good conversation with my dad kind of every day.
07:14 We speak on the phone or see each other in person every day. And then just like, you know,
07:20 my kids are little, but my daughter's old enough that I can just talk to her about her emotional
07:25 life and talk to her about mine. I think saying like, "How was your day? How are you feeling today?"
07:32 And then even if she doesn't ask, because she doesn't because she's so little, I'll tell her
07:35 how I'm feeling that day and how that day went. And that is good. It keeps me feeling really
07:40 connected to the people in my life and also that I took a little time to make sure that I'm healthy,
07:45 which feels like an indulgence. That was Pop Quiz with Marie Claire. Thank you for watching.
