Klopp fumes over decisions as nine-man Liverpool lose at Spurs

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was exasperated as his side lost 2-1 to a last-gasp Joel Matip own goal at Tottenham Hotspur after a first-half Luis Diaz effort was wrongly disallowed and two visiting players were sent off in an incident-packed game.
Colombian Diaz struck just past the half-hour mark in the Premier League clash after Liverpool had been reduced to 10 men when Curtis Jones was sent off for a challenge on Yves Bissouma following a VAR intervention that Klopp thought was harsh.
Substitute Diogo Jota was also dismissed late in the second half after two quick yellow cards but the Liverpool boss thought the first should never have been awarded for a foul on Destiny Udogie as the left back seemed to trip himself up.
"The (Diaz) offside goal. That's not offside when you see it. They drew their lines wrong," said Klopp. "The ball's between Mo's (Salah's) legs. They ... didn't judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It's so tough to deal with it.
"We scored an own goal, that's really tough to take... The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That's unlucky.
"(Jota's) first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with eight outfield players is tricky."
Despite the nature of the defeat, Klopp said he was proud of his team's backs-to-the-wall performance which almost delivered a point in extraordinary circumstances against a high-flying Spurs side who are making a habit of snatching late home wins.

00:00 Do you want to start with the decisions which seem bizarre?
00:07 I don't think there's anything to say about the offside goal. I knew it half time. In
00:14 the first moment I thought it was clear offside but when it was offside we tried to think
00:18 of a better view, half time we knew. With normal pictures it was easy to see. I'm pretty
00:30 sure whoever made that decision didn't do it on purpose, it didn't take extremely long
00:35 to come to the conclusion. It's a bit strange but somebody else has to clarify that. I have
00:40 nothing else to say about it.
00:42 How can the ref explain the situation? The alliance man thought it was worth watching
00:50 and looking again, that's why he raised the flag. In good old times an alliance man should
00:58 have seen that as well, that this is an offside because we had these situations quite frequently
01:02 and when you see it back it's pretty clear. But again, nobody did it on purpose. Whatever
01:10 I say here creates headlines but doesn't help the situation at all. So I'm not in that mood.
01:16 In terms of performance, I imagine that's one of the best you've seen from the team?
01:22 Yeah, absolutely. I told the boys directly after the game I'm super proud, super, super
01:27 proud. I think especially the 10 men, they were really good, really good, did everything
01:36 that was necessary. And on top of that we were really dangerous, we created stuff. So
01:44 that's good, top for us.
01:49 Red card for Curtis, probably everybody here in the room thinks it's a clear red card.
01:58 I see that different, which is because I played football and most of you probably didn't.
02:03 Full power on the ball, rolls over the ball and then hits the decisive part of the leg.
02:09 When you see it in slow motion it looks horrendous. I think when you see it in real time it's
02:16 not even close to being that bad. But it's a red card. But Curtis didn't do it, they're
02:24 not even close to it on purpose. So for me it's really important that nobody starts thinking
02:27 we have so many red cards, we are a kicking team. We don't. So the first red card from
02:34 Alexis was not a red card. We had to play already with six, I don't know how long, with
02:39 our 10 men. Second is for a normal foul I would say. Third is now for that situation.
02:48 And the fourth, I will never understand, how many games can you remember he leveled me
02:55 to nine? I watched a lot of football, it just doesn't happen that often. We were not in
03:01 the game and we were kicking Tottenham players. We were trying to play football, we defended,
03:07 yes. But the two situations, the first I think is clear not a yellow. And the second, I didn't
03:16 see actually back but it's not important if it was a second, first no yellow, then it's
03:19 a second yellow maybe and then we still played with 10 men. So that made everything difficult.
03:25 But the boys made really the most of it, it was incredible mentality, we showed second
03:32 to none, never saw something like that. That's top, top, top. And now people might think
03:37 because of this, very, very unlucky, oh my God, that we didn't get anything out of the
03:46 game. I see that differently. I think I learned so much about my team, much more than we would
03:52 have won here and in a bit of bad performance. A really outstanding performance in a specific
03:58 way. We didn't get any points of it but we will use it anyway, that's the plan. Biggest
04:05 problem of the game to be honest and that's the next one. Before Cody, Gakpo scored, did
04:15 he get a yellow card for that foul? We fouled Cody? Before he scored, we got a free kick,
04:21 he got the ball in, then he scores. He got injured and he is now with a brace limping
04:26 down the corridor. So that's my biggest problem to be honest in this moment. So we lost two
04:33 and maybe the third player, really bad, really bad. So that's something we have to deal with
04:41 obviously.
04:42 Do you feel that maybe referees shouldn't be allowed to see replays in slow motion?
04:49 I think it's really not too important what I think about it because my thoughts will
04:53 change nothing. But if you look at it and I think we agree on it, it looks completely
04:58 different. So the game is in real time but we judge it in slow motion. That makes not
05:04 too much sense in the first place. And still if they wouldn't use slow motion I think we
05:11 would still not agree on the majority of the situations. It's just a different view. It's
05:20 really not my subject today. Honestly, it's not my subject today. Whatever they do, they
05:26 try to do it right I assume.
05:28 PGMIL have just released a statement saying it was a significant error and a factual error.
05:36 Who does that help now? We had that situation in the Man United game. Did Wolves get points
05:41 for it? No. We did not get points for it so it doesn't help. I think what everybody wants
05:49 is that nobody expects 100% right decisions on field. But I think we all thought when
05:58 the VR comes in it might make things easier. I don't know why the people in the VR are
06:06 that much under pressure. Today the decision was made really quick I would say for that
06:10 goal. It changed the momentum of the game. So that's how it is. We scored that goal,
06:17 it was top, top, top. Outstandingly well played. In a game where you don't get a lot to feel
06:24 bad about. That's super important information. That's how we can hurt them, that's how
06:29 we can beat them. So it was super difficult. But the boys did extremely well with it. The
06:38 killer of the game was the second red card. And a lot of other decisions. The ball most
06:46 of the time wins back on the other side. I don't understand how you can make a foul
06:55 of that. That's football. Fantastic, high press, stuff like this. Player goes down.
07:01 We went down against Leicester, nobody whistled and they scored a goal. So these situations,
07:09 too many of them, where you think, that's football, why would you do these kind of things?
07:15 I know it's really difficult for the referees in a lot of moments. I don't know, but he
07:20 should blame the ref for the offside goal. That's absolutely not his fault. But for a
07:26 lot of other things he's not out of responsibility I would say.
07:30 But that's it now. We didn't get a point, I think that would have been what we deserved.
07:35 Didn't get that, but I got a lot out of that game and I will help the boys to feel that
07:44 as well and to go from here.
07:47 You hinted at how bad, you seemed to suggest it is really bad.
07:55 Possibly. I don't know. He scored a goal afterwards, but after that shot he felt it
08:02 even more. Obviously.
08:07 And it was from the foul rather than...
08:08 From the foul of course, before.
08:11 Thank you everyone. Thanks.
08:16 Thank you.
