00:00 over by robots. That's right, the future is now baby, the robots are on the rise and so are my eyelashes.
00:06 Also a quick thank you to Google Maps for sponsoring a portion of this video.
00:10 So for years and years now, humans have fantasized about robots. Robots who can clean for you, cook for you, robots who can solve crime,
00:17 robots who can save the human race, hot robots, and year after year
00:21 it seems like we are closer and closer to actually having some of this stuff.
00:25 There are robot hotels, self-driving cars, robots that can clean your grill, robot dogs.
00:30 I'm still holding out hope for the clothes folding robot, which I signed up for on a waitlist about four years ago.
00:35 So it was only a matter of time before the beauty robot started popping up. And as someone who does like to test out some
00:41 nice beauty tech every now and again, when I heard of two different beauty robots in San Francisco,
00:46 I knew we had to go and test them out. So in this video,
00:49 we're gonna travel to the belly of the beast,
00:51 Silicon Valley, and get strapped down to try an eyelash extension applying robot, and then put my digits on the line to try a nail painting
00:58 robot. Wish me luck. But really quickly,
01:01 let's talk Google Maps. Now when traveling to San Francisco, and just in general during our travel adventures,
01:06 Google Maps is always my go-to app for successfully navigating my way around. With mapping services in
01:12 99% of the world's countries and territories, and information ratings and reviews on over
01:17 250 million businesses and places worldwide. While in the Bay, we filmed at a bunch of different spots.
01:22 Besides trying out both of our beauty robots,
01:25 we also stayed overnight in a Pinecone Airbnb in Santa Cruz, and went to a ramen making class in Downtown SF. And Google Maps led
01:32 the way basically the entire time. Especially helping us drive through these Santa Cruz mountains, which are pretty intense.
01:38 Besides all that, Google Maps also has helpful features like their lists, which let you add and organize a bunch of
01:44 destinations in a single place. To keep your itinerary in order, and for quick and easy access. And you can even customize your list with a
01:51 little emoji, so the locations are easier to keep track of on your map. For our SF trip,
01:55 I was torn between the robot arm and the nail painting, so we went with the camera. Google Maps also offers their newly added
02:02 immersive view, which is a handy tool that helps you navigate the city with interactive 3D previews, as well as providing weather and traffic conditions.
02:09 Google Maps continually saves my butt, no matter where around the world we end up.
02:13 So if you want to check out these cool features for yourself, make sure to download the Google Maps app using the link below.
02:19 So thanks again to Google Maps for sponsoring this portion of our video. And now,
02:23 let's bring on the robots. Now, I was pretty intrigued by these robots. Beauty tech gadgets do seem to crop up pretty regularly nowadays.
02:31 It makes sense. Beauty is a huge market, and there's a lot of room for disruption.
02:35 But a lot of these consumer-facing beauty and wellness tech innovations, or at least the ones that have crossed my radar, have been limited to
02:42 at-home diagnostic tools and customizable makeup and skincare printers, which, even if they could be considered robots, are all pretty small and do all their
02:50 machinations inside like a little container, rather than applying anything straight to your face. And though many cool gadgets are
02:57 constantly being announced, a lot of them seem to fizzle out before they even make it to market.
03:01 I'm still looking at you, smart hairbrush.
03:03 So to see two big mama robots that not only help you do the thing,
03:07 but do the thing to you, that were both ready or very close to ready for business, certainly caught my attention.
03:13 Although I suppose these are a bit more high stakes if they don't work, since my actual body parts are in play.
03:19 I guess we'll find out. So after our night in the suspended pine cone, which also felt kind of risky,
03:24 we headed over to our first robot appointment at Lume Lash in Oakland. Now, Lume Precision Lash was founded in
03:30 2017, and they are super, super close to being open to the public. Currently,
03:34 they take preview eyelash extension appointments, kind of like final testing appointments at their Oakland office, and have plans to launch some of their lash
03:42 applying robots in a major beauty retailer in the coming months.
03:45 So I came in for my preview appointment prepped and ready, with no makeup on, especially no eye makeup,
03:51 so my lashes were clean, and notably no caffeine in me, to make sure I wouldn't be like uncontrollably twitchy inside the machine.
03:57 So right after we're done with the service, I'm gonna promptly run across the street and get some coffee.
04:02 - If I have a coffee and IV, ready to go.
04:04 (laughter)
04:06 - It's like a B12 shot, Tyler's standing there with like a syringe.
04:09 - I haven't hooked up to the robot.
04:10 And we met with Rachel, who is the head of lash artistry at Lume.
04:14 - And my eyes are in her hands today.
04:16 - They are.
04:17 Rachel originally comes from a traditional lash artist background, and has been helping develop the lash robots from the beauty end of things.
04:23 - All right, well, I'm ready to get started if you are.
04:26 - I'm ready.
04:26 - Okay, great. Let's do it.
04:27 - I think I'm ready. I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
04:29 (laughter)
04:30 - And after a brief consultation, she led me to the room with the big lash machines in them.
04:35 Ignore the cameras, those are ours.
04:36 - We've never been here before.
04:37 - We've never been here before. What is this room?
04:39 Which to me sort of looked like a cross between an MRI machine and a 3D printer.
04:43 - All right, this is Kate. We're gonna be doing your lashes today.
04:47 - Rachel told me the robots are all named after Charlie's Angels.
04:49 - Oh!
04:50 - Yeah, that one's Farrah.
04:51 (laughter)
04:52 - So to start off, we had to prep the lashes, which meant that Kate, our robot, started prepping the lash extensions inside the machine.
04:59 - Oh, look at her! Going, moving, doing stuff.
05:03 - And Rachel started prepping my actual lashes on my face.
05:06 - Oh, hello machine.
05:07 (laughter)
05:08 - Oh! I'm coming.
05:10 - Perfect.
05:11 - So after I army crawled past my cameras and tripods,
05:14 Rachel applied some primer to my lashes to make sure they were nice and clean,
05:18 and then applied these special under-eye patches.
05:20 - Do you use anything for lash growth?
05:22 - Um...
05:22 - 'Cause your lashes are so long.
05:24 - Oh, thank you. I think it's just 'cause I'm hairy.
05:26 (laughter)
05:27 - You're hairy in all the right places.
05:28 - Well, in all the places.
05:30 (laughter)
05:31 - As well as taped up my eyebrows to minimize lid movement.
05:34 - They're like 12 millimeters.
05:35 - Oh, is that long?
05:36 - It's very long.
05:37 - Alright. You know what they say about long lashes, right Ty?
05:41 - What do they say?
05:42 - Equally long leg hairs?
05:43 (laughter)
05:44 - Can't confirm.
05:45 (laughter)
05:47 - 12 millimeters, baby!
05:48 - And besides just keeping me taped up,
05:50 the idea is that the robot will be able to read the barcodes on these patches under and above my eyes like a topographical map
05:57 to figure out exactly where my lashes are.
05:59 - I'm in my, uh, produce era.
06:01 - So once I was primed and ready...
06:03 - You kinda look like you're ready to cross the river Styx.
06:05 - Yeah, that's what I was about to say.
06:07 I feel like I'm about to like, scent down the river in like a canoe for a Viking funeral.
06:11 - Rachel raised me into the line of fire.
06:13 Or rather, this air-conditioned cube.
06:15 Kinda cool in here.
06:17 - Nice and ventilated.
06:18 - Yeah.
06:18 - As it was time for Kate to get to work.
06:20 Now, the general way that this robot works is that it has these two arms over here
06:25 that brush through your lashes and identify a single natural lash that the robot thinks could be suitable to apply an extension to.
06:32 - And they're kinda little fingers.
06:33 - Mm-hmm.
06:34 - So as I'm manually lashing, those are tweezers.
06:36 - Oh, cool.
06:37 And then once it has isolated that lash,
06:39 its other arm over here will pick up a lash extension from its tray,
06:43 dip it into the lash glue,
06:44 and then place the extension on your natural lash.
06:47 - Perfect.
06:48 - Damn, I saw that happen.
06:49 - And then finally, it will cure the glue with a blue light to make the bond as secure as possible.
06:54 - Oh, sick.
06:55 - Mm-hmm.
06:56 - Do you feel any heat when the laser's drying the glue?
06:59 - Actually, a little bit.
06:59 I was about to say it's a little warm,
07:01 but like a nice little pleasant warming sensation.
07:03 I didn't know it was a laser.
07:04 Thanks for letting me know.
07:05 - It's a blue light.
07:06 Just to clarify.
07:08 - It's not a laser, Tyler.
07:10 - It's a frickin' laser.
07:11 - Now, initially, I was a little nervous about this robot.
07:14 - You feel that?
07:15 - Mm-hmm.
07:15 [Mimics robot]
07:18 - What's it feel like, Saf?
07:19 - I wouldn't say I was scared,
07:20 but it does sort of have pincer-looking things that approach your eyeballs,
07:24 so I had sort of a normal human level of skepticism about it.
07:27 But after having a few lash extensions applied,
07:30 with no final destination results,
07:32 it seemed like I was gonna be okay.
07:34 Though I can confirm, you do definitely feel the little arms.
07:37 - I can definitely feel it, like, not grabbing them.
07:40 - Brushing through?
07:41 - Yeah, brushing through.
07:42 I can definitely feel it brushing through.
07:44 - It is sort of an unexpected sensation.
07:46 In fact, I did flinch the first couple of times that they brushed me.
07:49 Kind of like, um, you know, like a boy in the school play getting his eyeliner done for the first time?
07:54 Like, "Ugh!"
07:55 But it's not not pleasant.
07:57 I was gonna say, like, monkey-finding lice vibes.
08:00 - Yes.
08:00 - Right?
08:01 In fact, it's kind of nice in a way.
08:03 Kind of feels like a little butterfly kiss.
08:05 - I love that.
08:05 - Like a little hummingbird.
08:07 - Okay.
08:07 - You know? Suckling at my lashes.
08:09 That said, although they do certainly look pretty scary,
08:12 we've been shown that these robotic arms are super lightweight
08:15 and are attached to the rest of the machine with magnets.
08:18 So say if you accidentally jammed your face right into them,
08:21 they would just flop off rather than piercing through your eyeball.
08:24 So, that's good.
08:26 - I do see your lashes, Saf, and they're looking pretty long.
08:28 - Mmm!
08:29 Even longer?
08:30 - Some bonus curl there.
08:31 Yeah, I'm looking at like 15 millimeters.
08:33 - Oh!
08:34 All right!
08:35 Here we go!
08:36 She would fly away with 15 millimeters.
08:38 I'm going for my, uh, the snuffleupagus look.
08:41 - You're in your snuffleupagus era?
08:43 - Well, ideally. I'll enter it.
08:45 Now, we had conferred with Rachel,
08:47 and she knew that I was gonna want to say a few things
08:49 about my initial reactions to the robot.
08:52 But now that we were in the thick of the service...
08:54 - Right eye, a check.
08:55 - Woo-hoo!
08:57 That's my celebratory wiggle.
08:58 ...the ideal scenario for the machine's process
09:00 would be for me to zip it and be as still as possible.
09:03 - All right, left eye time, baby.
09:05 - I'm talking about the left eye, baby.
09:07 And just let the machine do its thing.
09:08 - So, I'm gonna shut up now.
09:10 - Okay, great.
09:11 I'm actually gonna pause it really quickly.
09:12 - Okay, great.
09:13 Perfect!
09:14 In fact, Loom actually encourages you to take a beauty nap during your service.
09:18 So, I, in fact, did just that.
09:20 - Is it okay if I actually fall asleep?
09:22 I wasn't allowed to have any coffee before this.
09:24 And while Kate does her business,
09:26 we can answer a couple of lingering questions.
09:28 Namely, why this robot even exists.
09:30 With the help of Loom's CEO, Nate.
09:32 - So, are you Charlie?
09:34 - Uh, I guess I'm Charlie, yeah.
09:37 - Hello, ladies.
09:38 Now, Nate comes from a robotics background.
09:40 And when launching his company,
09:42 he was really interested in a concept with a very simple value proposition that a robot could offer.
09:47 - Do you want your lashes fast or do you want them slow?
09:50 A traditional lash extension refill appointment can take between an hour to 90 minutes.
09:54 - We want to get that appointment down to 20 minutes.
09:57 So that it's like an I'll be right back kind of coffee break sort of a thing.
10:01 And though Loom is currently a bit slower than that,
10:03 that's mainly because the robot is only working on one eye at a time.
10:07 Their end goal is actually to be lashing both eyes at once.
10:10 So, you know, double trouble.
10:12 Although, Nate doesn't intend for this robot to automate the lash extension experience or replace lash artists.
10:18 In fact, he envisions lash artists to be the ones operating the Loom robot.
10:22 Kind of like how Rachel had been supervising and troubleshooting Kate's work on my lashes
10:26 from behind the machine throughout the entire appointment.
10:29 - So what we want to do is work with lash artists.
10:32 They get a tool that allows them to do three times this tool.
10:36 - They get a tool.
10:37 - That allows them to do three times the appointments in a day that they could before.
10:41 I sort of view it like a surgeon using a robotic arm or something.
10:45 But Nate insists Loom is going for cute spa, not medical vibes.
10:50 - Mmm, not medical.
10:52 You got some googly eyes.
10:54 A little cuter.
10:55 - Add some googly eyes to the points app?
10:58 - But beyond being able to lash faster,
11:01 Nate and Rachel both also emphasize that sitting behind a robot is a lot easier on a lash artist's body
11:06 than hunching over clients all day.
11:08 So there are a lot of potential benefits to using these machines.
11:11 Now returning to my lashes, after a quick nap,
11:15 - Okay, 50 lashes. We're gonna call it right there.
11:18 It seemed like Kate was pretty much done.
11:20 - How you doing?
11:21 - Me!
11:23 - I totally fell asleep in that one.
11:25 - Oh good. That means you're comfortable.
11:27 - Good nap?
11:27 - Oh yeah.
11:28 So it was time to lower me out of the machine and have Rachel give Kate's work a once-over.
11:33 - How do I look?
11:34 How do I look?
11:35 Now I'm not sure if Loom intends for this to be happening long-term,
11:38 but at least in this testing phase, Rachel then went over my lashes and corrected any she thought didn't look quite right.
11:44 - How do I feel compared to the robot?
11:46 - Um, you're a lot quieter.
11:48 - Ehhh.
11:49 As well as added any lashes she felt like Kate missed to make sure we had the perfect lash shape,
11:54 which for my eyes, we had decided would be a rainbow arch.
11:57 - Kind of like natural glam, like it's not too much, but it's just really beautiful and opens the eye.
12:03 And after just a bit of zhuzhing, Rachel declared me good.
12:06 - Surprisingly, we didn't really go longer than her natural lashes.
12:09 - No?
12:10 - Nope.
12:10 - We just got more action.
12:11 - They're just a little bit thicker and curlier.
12:13 So I guess it was time for me to take a look.
12:16 - Alright, we've positioned me for the reveal.
12:18 - Yes.
12:18 - Ready?
12:19 - Yeah.
12:19 - Should I open my eyes?
12:20 - Uh, I'll tell you when and go for it.
12:22 - Whoa! Oh ho ho!
12:24 Oh yeah, I got lashes.
12:26 Hello. Hello. Wow. Look at them.
12:29 Now maybe I should have mentioned this earlier, but I've never gotten eyelash extensions before,
12:34 and I thought they looked pretty awesome.
12:36 They are very curly.
12:37 You said these aren't really longer than my normal ones?
12:39 - No.
12:39 - They look long.
12:40 In fact, these kind of have me considering getting eyelash extensions regularly.
12:44 - You actually, I can really see them.
12:46 - Right?
12:46 - They're really jumpy right now.
12:47 - Yeah.
12:47 - I like them.
12:48 - Hello. It's a new me. Made by a robot. Kate and Rachel duo.
12:53 Now, Lume's eyelash extensions ideally will last between four to six weeks with proper care,
12:57 and when they are fully installed in their beauty retailer,
13:00 they intend to charge about $170 for a full set of lashes and $80 for a refill,
13:06 which from what I can tell is a pretty competitive price for lash extensions.
13:09 I was getting pretty intimate with that robot for a while.
13:11 - Yeah.
13:12 - Yeah.
13:12 - You guys know each other.
13:14 - Carnally.
13:14 - Yeah.
13:15 - Yeah. Biblically.
13:16 So fingers crossed they make it there,
13:18 and if they make it there with googly eyes on their robots,
13:21 you know where that idea came from.
13:22 I think there are a couple of prime spots for googly eyes.
13:25 - With lashes, of course.
13:27 - Like right here. I can see it. I can totally see it.
13:30 So with my lashes filled and my eyeballs unscathed,
13:33 - Oh, yeah, that's good.
13:34 - That's what I'm talking about.
13:35 it was time for me to get my nails done.
13:37 So we headed over to downtown San Francisco to get to the Clockwork nail painting robot.
13:42 Now, Clockwork was founded in 2018,
13:45 and they have actually started launching robots that are open to the public over the past year or so.
13:49 So you could potentially try this out for yourself,
13:52 even though there are currently only a few robots out there,
13:55 like this one in the lobby of the LinkedIn building.
13:57 We got my lashes done.
13:59 Now we need to get my nails done.
14:01 My tips done.
14:02 - Your digits?
14:02 - My digits. My phalanges.
14:04 [laughs]
14:05 Mm, phalanges by robot.
14:07 Mm. Mm.
14:08 And after a lengthy trek from the door all the way back to the robot tucked away in this corner back here,
14:13 Should I serpentine?
14:15 - Yeah, what are you doing?
14:16 - I don't know. I just feel like there's so much time until we get to the robot.
14:20 I don't know what to do.
14:21 Just march slowly and quietly.
14:23 We met up with Aaron, who is one of Clockwork's founders and its CTO.
14:28 And I would like to know more about this robot, please.
14:30 - You've come to the right place.
14:31 - Tell me about your robot.
14:32 Now, to clarify, the Clockwork robot doesn't give you a manicure necessarily,
14:37 in that it doesn't massage your hands or file or shape your nails.
14:40 It focuses specifically on quickly and perfectly applying a new coat of polish to your fingers.
14:45 - So for us, the sort of the biggest value proposition is convenience,
14:49 but we also care a lot about speed and quality.
14:52 But convenience is the thing that really sets us apart.
14:55 - So it's kind of meant to be used when you need to be polished in a pinch,
14:58 in a situation where you wouldn't have time to make it to a salon,
15:01 and not as a replacement for an actual manicure.
15:03 And the locations Clockwork is choosing to place their robots reflect that goal of convenience,
15:08 like in the lobby of the LinkedIn building,
15:10 in the Student Union building at UC Berkeley,
15:12 at the Delta Terminal in JFK Airport.
15:15 - For us, the idea is that we want to put the robot where you already are.
15:18 - And unlike Loom, Clockwork's robots are meant to be fully automated.
15:22 So you just walk up to it and interact with the robot directly.
15:25 Their motto is "10 nails, $10, 10 minutes."
15:29 But I guess we'll see how quick and easy this thing really is.
15:32 Okay.
15:33 Heh-heh.
15:34 Okay.
15:35 - I got set up a metal station. - Yes.
15:36 Now after settling in, the first step of the process is to pick out the color you want.
15:41 - If you notice, there are a bunch of like color swatches over here,
15:44 with like the different polishes they offer.
15:45 So we get to pick one.
15:46 - For the most part, what we have on offer today is brands that you are probably familiar with,
15:51 like OPI, Essie, a few others.
15:54 - And after a little back and forth, I decided to go with this teal color.
15:57 Okay, I gotta pull down on cartridge to dispense.
16:00 Oh! Oh, I got it.
16:01 Oh, look at that.
16:02 Look at that little syringe.
16:03 Partially because I thought it would show up well on camera, but it is also pretty cute.
16:07 Okay.
16:09 Nailed it.
16:10 Heh-heh.
16:10 And then the machine wants you to remove your old nail polish.
16:13 I don't have any on, but we might as well just like take off whatever's on there, right?
16:16 Which it can do automatically for you,
16:18 after you click in a nail polish remover capsule into this little socket over here.
16:23 Oh my god.
16:23 Did you see that?
16:24 - I did, actually.
16:25 Oh, I'm scared.
16:26 Oh, oh.
16:28 Oh, yeah.
16:28 You put your fingertip like in the foam, and then it like rotates around you.
16:31 - It looks kind of nice.
16:32 It's kind of relaxing.
16:34 I really like this for some reason.
16:36 It felt kind of like pampering and spa-like, just a little bit.
16:40 Oh, oh.
16:41 I love this part.
16:42 - You're sold.
16:43 I'm sold.
16:44 And then you're ready to load your polish into the machine,
16:46 lock your finger into this stirrup down here.
16:49 You kind of like shake hands with the device.
16:52 Hello there, robot.
16:53 And then it's time to get to polishing.
16:56 - You gotta stay steady, Saf.
16:57 I... we'll see.
17:00 I'm not gonna intentionally move around.
17:02 - You have had coffee today, right?
17:04 A fair amount.
17:04 - Do you guys recommend no coffee?
17:06 - Uh, coffee's okay.
17:07 [laughter]
17:08 - Okay, so you're good. You're good.
17:09 Hopefully I'm not too twitchy.
17:10 Now, the way that this robot works is that once you put your finger into the holster...
17:14 All right, ready?
17:15 I'm gonna press...
17:16 Ready. Oh.
17:17 I said ready, so it started going.
17:19 - Exhale, relax your arm.
17:21 It takes two 3D images of your nails.
17:23 - Oh.
17:24 - Cool.
17:24 - Oh, it's doing stuff.
17:25 - It's doing stuff.
17:26 It's doing stuff!
17:27 And then based on that, it decides what part of those images it thinks is your actual nail versus finger or cuticle.
17:34 And then it combines that with its knowledge of the nail polish you chose and how it will flow.
17:38 I see the little polish needle, like, coming towards me.
17:40 Oh, it's going.
17:41 - Oh, look at that!
17:42 Oh, it's going.
17:43 To decide where to place the polish and how much it should dispense.
17:46 - Oh, it feels kind of nice.
17:47 I'm trying to be really still, which is requiring some concentration, but it feels pretty nice.
17:52 Yeah, it's got a little, like, massaging vibe, like, a little bit of pressure.
17:56 Now, we had started with my thumb, and we had a pretty difficult time getting it to be polished perfectly.
18:01 Did I move too much? Is that what that is?
18:02 - Very likely, yes.
18:03 - Okay.
18:04 - Takes a little bit of getting used to, exactly, like, how much movement is okay.
18:07 Nothing went horribly wrong, but there were a few imperfections here and there.
18:11 All right, shall we try it again?
18:12 - Yeah, maybe I'll stop talking to you so you can focus on keeping your hand steady.
18:16 - Oh...
18:18 But according to Aaron, thumbs are the trickiest fingers to do.
18:21 So, after a couple of attempts, we decided to move on to my other fingers and loop back around to the thumb later.
18:27 We suspected that I was probably generally moving too much,
18:30 so I decided to, once again, zip it and let the machine do its thing.
18:34 - There's a lot of you being quiet in this video.
18:36 - Yeah.
18:37 - Yeah.
18:38 - Unfortunately, it's not ideal to be taking sound bites while a robot is giving you a makeover.
18:42 And the other fingers went fine.
18:44 - That felt good.
18:45 That felt good.
18:47 - Great, actually.
18:49 I'm gonna give it the finger, my finger.
18:51 Let's paint, baby.
18:52 - Exhale.
18:53 Relax your arm.
18:54 - And I could see how, with a little practice,
18:56 you could probably paint your nails with this machine in less than 10 minutes, actually.
19:00 That one looks great.
19:01 - Oh, it's on a roll.
19:02 - We're on a roll.
19:03 But after painting the other four fingers on my right hand...
19:06 - Let it rip!
19:07 - Oh, yeah, that one looks great.
19:08 - Oh, it got the pinky.
19:09 - All right. - All right.
19:10 - Pinky.
19:11 - We were back to the thumb, and I still couldn't quite figure it out.
19:14 - No, I messed it up.
19:16 - What am I doing wrong?
19:17 - So we decided to consult the diagnostics video.
19:20 Now, if you have a problem with a clockwork robot like out in the wild,
19:23 it has an automatic feature that will call the home office.
19:26 - And then someone on our end can sort of see what it sees and figure out what's going on
19:31 and figure out what targeted advice we can give you.
19:34 - So serving as our in-person substitute, Aaron reviewed the footage that the robot recorded of my thumb
19:39 and revealed that the problem was not that I was moving my thumb while it was getting polished,
19:43 but rather I was moving slightly in between the imaging and the polishing.
19:48 - Do you see how you sort of move backwards a little bit?
19:50 - So to decrease any tension in my arm, we removed the pad underneath my elbow.
19:55 I have kind of gangly arms, so it might have been kind of pushing me up.
19:58 - I don't need the extra elevation.
20:00 - And we also decided that I should stop pressing the "Ready" button
20:03 and instead just use the voice activation feature and just say "Ready."
20:07 - Okay, ready.
20:08 - So there was no resettling after I reached over to press the screen.
20:12 - What do you think? - Don't call it a comeback.
20:15 - That looks good to me.
20:16 - And this finally worked.
20:18 - Oh, yeah, that looks great. - Wow.
20:20 - Okay. - Wow. - Perfect.
20:22 - Boom. A polished thumb, people. Isn't she a beaut?
20:25 - A little diagnostics there. - All right.
20:27 - A little knowledge goes a long way.
20:29 - We got to see that the replay cam there. That was really what it was.
20:33 Let's go to the mall.
20:35 - And we blew through my left hand using this method.
20:38 - All right. Ready. Ready.
20:40 - [sighs]
20:42 - Ready. - Doing five nails in five attempts.
20:44 - Yeah! - Look at those two thumbs.
20:47 - Looks great. All right. I'm learning. I'm getting it. I'm evolving.
20:52 - Yeah, just like a robot. You're calibrating.
20:55 - I've been calibrating for a while. - Yeah.
20:56 - So, the clockwork robot. There is a learning curve, but I think we could say it was working.
21:02 - Did you get this side done? - Yeah.
21:04 - Can we see how that looks? - Sure.
21:06 - Oh, my goodness. Oh, wow. Those are good nails.
21:10 - Yeah, it's doing a good job.
21:12 Now, though clockwork does offer a shimmery nail polish or two,
21:15 they don't currently offer any holographic colors,
21:18 but that doesn't mean they haven't tested with them.
21:20 Apparently, they have tested some of our friend Simply Nailogical's Holo Taco polishes,
21:25 and they say the viscosity of them works really well with the robot.
21:29 - And so, we made some special Holo Taco cartridges just for you.
21:33 These are exclusives, but they will work in any clockwork robot that you can find.
21:38 - I had used normal clockwork polish on my nails,
21:40 but we did have an extra hand in Tyler, who volunteered to get painted as well.
21:45 - I've learned vicariously through you. - Hopefully.
21:47 - Yeah. Nah, I'm gonna get the thumb on my first try here.
21:51 - Need the hand rest? - Yeah, let's get the hand rest in here.
21:53 I'm less gangly.
21:54 - This was a few months before our Safiya X Holo Taco collection came out,
21:57 so we went with Espresso Your Holo from the Holo Barista collection.
22:01 - Ready. - Hold on to your butts.
22:03 - And using all my tricks, namely just saying "ready" instead of pressing the "ready" button,
22:08 he also swept his nails with polish.
22:10 - Hey, that looks pretty good, actually. - Yeah, I like that.
22:13 - That looks pretty good. - And may I say the color is very nice.
22:16 - With five nails in five attempts.
22:18 - Did I say "ready"? Did I tell it to go? - Yeah, you did.
22:20 - That's the key. That's the key.
22:22 - So, hey, that's pretty good.
22:25 - I feel a little bit like I'm a part of, like, a candy factory conveyor belt.
22:28 You know, my hand's just getting put down, pipette comes in, doles out some caramel, keeps going, you know?
22:33 - Now, for finishing steps, Clockwork offers little wands you can use to clean up any extra polish drips.
22:39 Great, I don't know if I did anything, but I tried.
22:43 As well as some quick-drying drops to help seal in your manicure.
22:46 As you may have noticed, Clockwork does only dispense, like, one thick coat of polish on each nail, and that's it.
22:52 But they are currently working on the ability for the robot to actually paint a top coat on top of the polish it gives you.
22:58 Which seems like a great idea, but that wasn't available yet when we got our nails done.
23:02 So here are my nails, and Tyler's nails, painted by a robot.
23:06 - What do you think? - Look at me. A robot did that.
23:09 All in all, I think they look pretty good.
23:11 Now, besides the process/experience and how they work, one other question I had for these robot beauty services was, "How long do they last?"
23:20 For the Clockwork Robot manicure, they claim that it lasts between two days to a week, which is kind of a large range.
23:26 I would say mine lasted a couple days before it started to chip a little bit,
23:30 but I had to take off my polish for a different video before I could really get to the end of my polish.
23:35 Our team member Haley also got her nails done by a Clockwork robot, and was able to track her polish a bit more closely.
23:41 Here's her nails right after application, after two days, then after three days, and I would say it was pretty chipped by day four.
23:48 Which, for regular polish with no top coat, seems about par for the course.
23:52 For the Loom Lash Robot, the lashes are supposed to last between four to six weeks before being fully gone.
23:58 My appointment was a preview appointment, and unfortunately, Miss Kate did have a little problem with her blue curing light while doing my lashes,
24:05 so they fell out a bit faster than they were supposed to.
24:08 But our team member Haley also got her lashes done by a Loom Robot,
24:12 and though she has been steadily losing a few lashes here and there, she still has a fair amount of lashes two weeks later.
24:18 Which seems more on par with what Loom expects, and pretty similar to traditional lash extensions.
24:23 So all in all, though these robot beauty treatments do have a few kinks to work out here and there,
24:28 they do generally do what they say they want to do.
24:31 Which, all things considered, is pretty cool.
24:34 I generally enjoy the treatments myself, but I think only time will tell if the general market will like them enough for them to succeed long-term.
24:41 I still think some googly eyes might help.
24:43 And/or some Holo Taco.
