00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:17 up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday,
00:22 the 29th of September.
00:25 A champion in the making, we meet Kent's up and coming para-triathlete star, 15-year-old
00:30 Oliver Scott will be here with me live in the studio. From spin to swim, Herne Bay Leisure
00:36 Centre opens up to encourage more to get active. And action replay, we take a look at the pictures
00:43 and videos sent in by you, the KMTV viewers.
00:48 But first a round up of the headlines and Kent have survived relegation from Division
00:52 One of the County Championship following their match with Lancashire ending on a draw today
00:57 and Nottinghamshire beating Middlesex in just the last ten minutes.
01:00 In the last hour, as I mentioned, play ended at Canterbury, drawing the curtain on the
01:05 County cricket season for Kent. They posted 494 to go 167 ahead into the final day. A
01:12 partnership of 124 between Lanx, Tom Bailey and Josh Bahannon helped the Red Rose snub
01:18 Kent's hopes of trying for the win. Surrey retained the County Championship title on
01:22 Wednesday. They lost to Hampshire by 52 runs in their final game today.
01:27 Holcombe's unbeaten streak in the Premiership ended with a 2-1 defeat against reigning champions
01:33 Old Georgians on Thursday evening. Barry Middleton's team struggled early, conceding two goals
01:38 by the end of the first quarter. Holcombe did improve possession in the second, defending
01:42 an Old Georgian's penalty corner well. Nick Bandarack gave Holcombe hope with a goal in
01:48 the second half, but despite chances they couldn't equalise. A disallowed goal and a
01:52 missed penalty corner sealed the 2-1 loss. They now sit second in the standings.
01:57 Next for Holcombe, they're set to face Surbiton this Saturday.
02:02 Next an athlete who took part in a triathlon at Hever Castle say they were left bed-bound
02:07 with nausea and diarrhoea after taking part in the swimming leg. Some have taken to social
02:12 media over the last week to ask if others have been experiencing sickness after taking
02:16 part in the castle event, one reporting that it felt like swimming in human waste. Race
02:21 organisers say that water quality tests were carried out before the event and found the
02:25 water to be safe. However, an investigation has now been launched following reports of
02:30 sickness.
02:32 Now onto football, and Gillingham have announced that striker Lewis Walker has left the Medway
02:36 side and has moved to National League Woking on a short-term loan deal until January. The
02:41 24-year-old has missed most of the opening two months of the season due to injury, but
02:45 now fit again, he's looking for game minutes. It comes as he featured in the Gilles' friendly
02:50 fixture against Dartford on Tuesday, where he came away with two assists. Gillingham
02:55 won that fixture 4-1.
02:56 Well, here's manager Neil Harris speaking this week before Walker's departure was announced.
03:00 He's been out for three months, so we know exactly where Lewis is at, he knows exactly
03:05 where he's at within the football club. He's not been fit, he's been training for two and
03:09 a half weeks, he's played 30 minutes against Millwall, he's played 60 minutes against Dartford,
03:16 so we now feel Lewis is in a position where he's a lot closer to the first team fold or
03:20 he's going to go out on loan for a period of time to get up to speed. Because one thing
03:25 Lewis hasn't done since he's been in the football club is play a run of games. So if he gets
03:30 an opportunity here, great, if he's not going to get that opportunity very quickly, then
03:34 a loan to the National League would be a really, really good option for him.
03:37 Gillingham are set to play Mansfield Town this Saturday, who are unbeaten in League
03:41 Two so far this season. The Gilles lost 2-1 away to Doncaster last time out, following
03:46 three successive home wins. But did you also know you can have your weekly digest of Gilles
03:51 news sent directly to your inbox? Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up on the

04:00 Sticking with the football, here's a quick look at the fixtures happening this weekend.
04:05 As you've been hearing, Gillingham are hosting Mansfield Town at Priestfield this Saturday.
04:09 The last time these two met, the Stags won 2-0 when Gillingham were second bottom in
04:13 the League Two table. But following a transformative summer for both sides, they now meet one place
04:18 apart in second and third.
04:20 The visitors are unbeaten so far this season. The streak Gillingham will be looking to end
04:24 as they take on their highest ranked opponents so far this season.
04:28 Ebbsfleet are coming off the back of five games without a win in the National League.
04:32 They take on Boreham Wood this Saturday at home. Leading scorer Dominic Pelléon is out
04:36 of contention following a thigh injury, whilst long-term forward Rakesh Bingham remains injured
04:41 since March. However, manager Dennis Kutryb says he won't be rushing to sign a new striker
04:46 any time soon.
04:47 "I'm the last person now to say, 'Oh no, this is all rubbish and we need to change everything
04:53 because we picked the squad for a reason and if there's someone to blame for it, it's me
04:57 and no one else. The players will get better and at one point when they have more confidence
05:02 and they feel it, they will score their goals and we will be fine."
05:06 This weekend, both the National South and the Isthmian League are interrupted as the
05:10 FA Cup third qualifying round gets underway. Joint lowest ranked Kent side still in the
05:14 competition, Sheppey United, are travelling all the way to Wales to Merthyr Town. Eidtsbos
05:20 Ernie Batten says that despite being the underdogs, there's no reason why they wouldn't be able
05:24 to get into the final round of qualifying.
05:27 Another confident manager is boss of the other Isthmian South East side still in the cup.
05:31 Ben Smith says Ramsgate are the favourites as they host Frome Town at Southwood.
05:35 This week it's bottom of the table Concord Rangers who will host Invicta. It's the first
05:39 time these two sides will meet after the Rangers' relegation from the National South. However,
05:44 10th place Invicta haven't had the rub of the green recently. In the midweek, they drew
05:48 three all against Potters Bar. Joint head coach Roland Edge shared his frustrations
05:53 after that match.
05:54 "Switching off and then a lazy leg and that could have cost us every point today. Luckily
05:59 for us, and I still believe this, the keeper gets sent off and he gave us a lifeline and
06:04 luckily for us we took a point. I mean, when it went down to, they went down to 10 really,
06:10 we should have got three but you can't finish like that."
06:14 Now it's time to meet our first guest this evening. Oliver Scott is Faversham's next
06:18 big star, having come second overall place in this year's Paratriathlon Super Series.
06:24 The 15-year-old has his eyes set on a Paralympic spot one day, but in the meantime is taking
06:28 on competitors twice his age and is even holding his own in able-bodied competitions too. Well,
06:33 I'm very pleased to say that Oli is joining me now in the studio. Oli, thank you very
06:38 much for coming here today and welcome to Invicta Sport.
06:41 Just have to ask, how did you get into triathlon? Because you didn't start off with triathlon
06:45 when you started getting active, it was athletics first, is that right?
06:49 Yeah, athletics. I've been doing athletics since I was eight, so I've always been quite
06:54 sporty and then over lockdown I just took the chance to reflect and I thought that athletics
07:05 was sort of, it's very samey, you're sort of doing the same stuff and I just thought,
07:10 let's go for something different.
07:13 Why not take on three sports at once instead of just one? What is it about then? All three
07:20 disciplines, have you got a favourite or is it just all three of them, is that you're
07:25 just juggling it in your mind all the time?
07:27 Yeah, cycling's probably my favourite. It's just different. Running, although it's the
07:33 one that I'm probably best at, because I've been doing it for so long, cycling's just
07:40 different and yeah, it's more enjoyable.
07:43 I suppose it's something that you can always be working towards as you progress through
07:47 your career. You've had quite a successful career so far. I was mentioning there, you
07:51 go up against people double your age. Just from the picture we've got here, these guys
07:55 look much older than you. Do you think about that at all when you go into a competition,
07:59 who you're going up against?
08:00 No. I mean, obviously we're all put in the same category for a reason. We've all got
08:05 similar disabilities. Age doesn't matter as much. It's just like, compete against who
08:12 you're meant to be competing against.
08:14 Yeah, of course. Tell me about this super series that you take part in. You're going
08:20 all around the country, aren't you, throughout the season. How well did you do this year?
08:25 Yeah, so this year I came second. So it's my first season competing in this. So yeah,
08:31 basically it's just a series of, I think, five races. I could only do four this season.
08:38 But yeah, depending on where you finish in each race, you get a certain number of points
08:44 and then your three best points go towards your overall ranking. Which is why I came
08:50 second.
08:51 Yeah, I mean, a fantastic effort. I mean, to miss out one race and still come second.
08:56 What's the target next year then as you go into next season?
08:58 Obviously, I want to win it. So next season I can do all five races. The thing that meant
09:04 I couldn't do the one, won the ones this year was because of my age. But yeah, next season
09:11 hopefully I'll be able to do all five and hopefully win a couple of the individual races
09:16 and then hopefully get top spot on the podium overall.
09:19 Yeah, absolutely. Well, good luck to you. Now, you're also on the British Paratriathlon's
09:24 Talent Pathway Programme. You've been there for over the past year now, is that correct?
09:28 Yeah.
09:29 What's that kind of like? Has that been a step up in the training regime?
09:32 It's been... Yeah, obviously my training has had to increase, but it's quite nice and relaxed.
09:39 We go on a few training camps, which are very interesting, relaxing. So yeah, you get away
09:45 from a lot of the stresses at home of having to go to training and that because it's all
09:51 just there. But they're very supportive and they help you take steps in the right direction.
10:00 So it's good.
10:01 What's it like when you're at school, when you're with your mates and you're off training
10:06 like four or five times a week? Is that the right amount? Are they looking at you going,
10:10 "Wow, how are you managing to do this?" while they're just off whatever it is they do?
10:14 Yeah, it is hard shuffling, social life with training. But I have, obviously, on weekends
10:22 I am training, but I'm not training the whole day. So yeah, I'm shuffling it with school
10:29 work, but there's still plenty of time to catch up with friends and that. But yeah,
10:34 I think they are sometimes a bit like, "Why?"
10:38 Why? Well, why is it then? You've got this goal of the Paralympics in the future. Is
10:48 that the ultimate goal for you?
10:51 Yeah, that's always been a goal for me. Even when I was doing running, I've always wanted
10:56 to compete at the highest level against the best competitors in the world. And yeah, that's
11:01 still the goal. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to 2028. But we'll see because there's
11:07 only a small amount of numbers that go in the whole world.
11:10 I mean, it's so competitive, but of course you are so competitive as well. I wish you
11:14 all the best of luck. Thank you very much for joining us today. Just before we go, I
11:18 want to ask, you're going into the winter now. What do you do over the winter break?
11:23 Normally, I would be doing cross-country, but for this year I'm giving it a miss. So
11:30 just continuing the training. I'll probably be upping it going into next season as I'm
11:34 getting a bit older. But yeah, just continue the training, turbos, long runs, just keeping
11:44 it going. I mean, I'm coming into a bit of a rest in off-season.
11:47 Of course. Well, we've got to go now, but like I said, thank you very much for joining
11:51 us and good luck with the rest of your career. We'll be back after this very short break.

14:58 Hello and welcome back to Invicta Sport live on KMTV.
15:02 Now, Active Life is getting ready to open the doors of two of its leisure centers
15:06 this weekend to welcome in families in Herne Bay and
15:10 Whitstable for a day of free sporting activities.
15:14 From spin classes to swim sessions, there's something for everyone.
15:17 The charity says it's encouraging people to take advantage of their facilities
15:21 whilst also raising money for other causes in the areas.
15:24 Such as the Strode Park Foundation,
15:26 which looks after children with disabilities in Herne Bay.
15:29 Well, I went along this week to find out more.
15:32 Coming along to this charity run leisure center in Herne Bay will be completely
15:36 free throughout this Saturday, opening its doors to encourage the community to
15:40 get active or to try out something new.
15:43 Active Life puts all of the money earned from its five leisure centers in
15:47 the wider Canterbury district back into its day to day running.
15:51 With cash prizes on offer for challenges being hosted throughout the day,
15:55 the gyms will be open for a whole range of activities.
15:58 From family swim sessions, or to take part in a spin class, but
16:02 you really can take it at your own pace.
16:05 The main message from Active Life is just to come down and have fun.
16:09 Meet Tony.
16:10 Today was his first day in a gym just after having retired.
16:14 He tells me he's gonna be quick to come back.
16:16 >> Got me in the gym and I thought, after a few goes,
16:23 I thought, actually, really, I'm gonna have to pack on and get this done.
16:26 So that's why I signed up.
16:28 We went swimming last week in Winston, Auckland, and joined the club.
16:32 Yeah, and here I am today.
16:34 I am committed to it, I have no fear.
16:36 But yes, and I'm gonna learn to swim as well, which I can't be.
16:41 >> It is the hardest part, is coming through that door.
16:44 If you've made that journey through that door, that's your first step.
16:47 And then our front of house team and
16:49 our fitness experts will be able to help you along that journey.
16:54 >> Particularly if people have been out of fitness for a long time,
16:57 some people are quite anxious to come back into sight.
17:00 This whole week and Saturday is about fun.
17:04 >> But even if getting sporty isn't your cup of tea, families are invited along for
17:08 face painting, live music, and community stalls.
17:12 As part of the fun day,
17:13 Herons will be hosting a raffle to raise money for the Strode Park Foundation,
17:17 which cares for disabled or vulnerable children and adults throughout the county.
17:21 >> Some of the events we do, they're not always accessible to local communities.
17:25 And I think for us as well, it's about raising money for us, but
17:28 also showing the community that you can come to these events because they are
17:33 accessible and affordable for everyone.
17:36 So I think our thing is making it affordable for the community to come, but
17:39 also giving us enough money to do the things we need to do.
17:43 Literally every little bit helps.
17:45 >> Any sort of event we can put on for any sort of thing, we will do.
17:48 And we're so excited to do them all as well, aren't we?
17:51 >> So with families cutting costs across the board, what better than a free day out?
17:56 Bartholomew Hall for KMTV in Herne Bay.
17:58 Well, now joining me on the line to talk a bit more about the benefit of that fun
18:02 weekend day and being a charity run leisure center is Karen Monticelli from
18:07 Active Life.
18:08 Karen, thank you very much for joining us here.
18:11 Welcome to Invicta Sport.
18:12 First of all, before we get into the sportaneous day, can you just tell me
18:16 how it is that a leisure center can be run as a charity?
18:20 >> Well, Active Life work with Canterbury City Council to run the district's
18:26 leisure facilities.
18:28 We manage the facilities.
18:32 The facilities actually are owned by Canterbury City Council.
18:36 So we've merged with Fusion Lifestyle in 2019.
18:42 So we now are able to further our remit of delivery for
18:48 quality provision for our little communities.
18:53 The money that we make actually gets put back into our facilities,
18:58 which means we're able to reinvest.
19:01 So since merging with Fusion,
19:03 we've been able to invest over £11 million into our three main sites.
19:09 >> And you do a lot of work with those local charities and
19:13 also with the local community as well.
19:15 I mean, the last time we were speaking with yourselves, Active Life and Fusion,
19:19 you just awarded £500 to one of our local girls football teams in Herne Bay,
19:24 the Herne Bay Rangers, and they were able to use that money to go ahead and
19:28 help them get through the start of their season.
19:32 And that was kind of tied into this sort of, with the Lionesses and
19:35 their success in the World Cup reaching the final, of course.
19:39 So how crucial is that sort of part of being a sort of community
19:43 within the local community, sort of helping those groups and people progress?
19:49 >> Well, Active Life's remit is to increase opportunities for
19:56 physical activity and to access leisure and sporting facilities.
20:01 This obviously helps to reduce anxiety, stress, depression,
20:07 helps improve levels of confidence and self-esteem, and
20:12 can actually help to bring people together.
20:14 So the only way that we're going to achieve this for
20:17 our little community is to work with our police and our community engagement.
20:24 >> Let's talk about this, oh, sorry, sorry, you carry on.
20:27 >> The whole point of that is we've had a high school which has had their facilities
20:31 since 2011, which means we're able to put on a wider community program.
20:39 And we're able to deliver government initiatives alongside
20:43 our community program because we've got facilities to do so.
20:47 >> Well, let's talk about this Saturday then, it's the Sportanious Day.
20:50 You're opening, I was down at Herons, obviously, in Herne Bay.
20:54 You're going to be opening it for free.
20:55 Obviously, families are sort of cutting their budgets in all sort of different
20:59 areas at the moment.
21:00 Surely that's got to be a real big sort of helpful to them,
21:03 somewhere to take the children for the day, or
21:05 even just to get active if they haven't been able to do so.
21:09 >> Yeah, I think part of being a parent is you're trying to give your children as
21:12 much opportunity as possible to take part in activities, but it can be very costly.
21:18 And also there's a financial commitment to those activities
21:23 which you wish to undertake them.
21:25 So the good thing about community days, the Sportanious,
21:30 is the fact that people can come along, try out activities with no financial
21:34 commitment, and actually see what activities that they might want to commit to.
21:39 Before having that financial commitment, for instance,
21:42 we have a Rookies' Pacer session happening tomorrow, and it's all fully booked.
21:48 And it's fully booked by people that have achieved early stages,
21:51 that should really be going on to the Rookies' stage, but
21:54 aren't too sure whether they want that commitment again.
21:57 So it's giving people the opportunity to try activities,
22:00 to see what other activities they might be interested in in the future.
22:05 >> And I suppose it's important as well to encourage young people to pick up
22:08 a habit that they might take forward after they've left school and
22:11 they go into their adult life as well.
22:13 But this sort of Sportanious event, it started earlier in the week as well for
22:16 young people coming in.
22:17 You had the Teen Gym Challenge throughout the week.
22:20 Tell me about that, and I understand it's having its finale this Saturday.
22:24 >> It is.
22:25 So we, as mentioned already, we have a really strong partnership with
22:29 Humber High School.
22:31 We deliver Teen Gym sessions as part of their PE sessions.
22:36 And because of that, we have had over 100 teenagers enrol into our
22:43 team membership.
22:44 So we thought it'd be a really good idea just to have some fun and
22:48 set them the Teen Challenge, where they take part in that challenge Monday to
22:52 Friday, they score points, and then the finalists get to take part in the finals
22:59 on the Saturday, and they get to win Amazon vouchers.
23:06 >> It sounds fantastic.
23:07 Well, Karen, thank you very much for joining us and
23:08 telling us a bit more about the event this Saturday.
23:11 I hope it all goes well, and hopefully we can catch up again in the future.
23:15 >> Lovely, thanks very much.
23:16 >> Thank you very much.
23:16 Now, we've reached full time on today's episode, but
23:21 there's just a few minutes of extra time for
23:23 you to take a look at this week's Action Replay.
23:26 It's the segment where we take a look at the clips and
23:28 pictures that you, the KMTB audience, have sent in of you taking part in sport.
23:33 Let's see what we've got in store this week on Action Replay.
23:36 >> Hello, and welcome to this week's Action Replay.
23:40 First up, we have this brilliant feat sent in by Charlie Anderson from Medway,
23:45 who took part in a tough mudder with three others.
23:48 Self-named the Dangerous Dominos, Charlie, Damien, Chris, Amy, and Matt
23:53 put themselves through hours of ice baths, barbed wire, and a ton of mud.
23:58 All in a bid to raise some well-earned money for the mental health charity, MIND.
24:04 Despite a few falls and trips, and becoming completely covered in the mucky stuff,
24:08 each one of them emerged from the race with a huge smile on their face.
24:13 Next up, and continuing the action replay theme of celebs being spotted in Kent,
24:17 Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay took the trip to Rochester recently
24:22 to celebrate her son's birthday at St. Andrew's Lakes.
24:25 The actor, best known for playing Corrie's Shelley Unwin,
24:28 posted the picture to her Instagram of her and her boys,
24:32 describing it as one of the best days they had ever had.
24:35 As Kent's largest aquasite, Medway's hidden gem hosts paddle boarding,
24:40 kayaking, and floating super slides.
24:42 So there's no wonder why it's attracting in the big names.
24:47 Now let's take a look at this cheeky little fox who went viral this week
24:51 after breaking into the away end at Priestfield Stadium
24:54 to watch Gillingham's recent game against Morecambe.
24:57 Some say he's an away fan who's just a little bit late
25:00 to last summer's FA Cup third round clash against Leicester City.
25:06 And finally, nurses from the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford
25:09 have taken on the Mammoth Three Peaks challenge,
25:12 all in aid of the Three Wishes project,
25:15 which aims to fulfil the final wishes of terminally ill patients.
25:18 Judith, Josh, Harriet, Ruth, Josh and Tim got to the top of Ben Nevis
25:24 and are officially classed as completing the challenge,
25:27 despite bad weather stopping them from getting to the summit of Scaffold Pike and Snowdon.
25:32 The group had to power through terrain, extreme winds and freezing temperatures,
25:37 and they raised more than £5,000 for the project.
25:41 That's it from this week's Action Replay.
25:44 Brilliant stuff there.
