Today AD is welcomed by former NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony to tour his stylish new home in Westchester, New York. After closing out his two-decade-long basketball career in May, the New York native felt it was time to settle into a more spacious pad in the suburbs. Leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks behind him, Anthony teamed up with interior designer Cassandre Bonhomme to create a home that matched his eclectic taste. Together, they designed a “modern vintage” interior–ornate fixtures paired with a luxe color palette and fabrics make the perfect home for Carmelo’s extensive contemporary art collection. With more space to stretch his legs and just a short drive into the city, it’s safe to say that Melo has settled nicely into his next chapter in the ’burbs. “I love land, I love space. Once you start getting out of the city and traveling and going to these other places, you realize that a 25 to 30-minute drive is not that far from the city.”

00:00 [laughs]
00:01 What's up, AD?
00:02 I'm Carmelo Anthony.
00:03 Welcome to my home.
00:04 Come on in.
00:05 [upbeat music]
00:08 My big welcome piece upstairs, that's Muhammad Ali.
00:20 That's the focal piece in the house.
00:22 He just gives so much energy, so much spirit,
00:24 so much love when you look at that.
00:26 I've been collecting art almost 15 years now.
00:29 I was always into up-and-coming artists,
00:31 and I just had an eye for what I like.
00:33 And I realized quickly that I don't have to like something
00:37 because somebody else like it.
00:39 I like it because it appeals to my mind,
00:40 it appeals to my spirit, whether it's a dollar or $10.
00:45 This is Swoon.
00:47 She's amazing.
00:48 Grew up maybe three, four blocks away from her
00:52 in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
00:54 And this one, Bakahinde Wiley.
00:56 He did a series of artists.
00:58 I think it was myself, Spike Lee, and Swiss Beats.
01:01 My inspiration behind this,
01:03 well, I'm a big Game of Thrones fan.
01:05 So that's the king right there.
01:07 Come on now, I'm gonna take y'all
01:08 to the most important room in here.
01:10 [upbeat music]
01:13 This is the music room.
01:20 This is the green room.
01:21 There's a lot of details in this place,
01:23 so pay attention to the details.
01:24 This is a big Swoon piece.
01:27 As you can see, I'm a big Swoon fan.
01:29 This is one of my first pair of signature sneakers
01:31 with Jordan Brand that I created here in New York.
01:35 One of my first years, first seasons with New York.
01:37 And the artist, Domingo Zapata,
01:39 did something for me at a dinner.
01:41 It was part of a magazine cover release.
01:43 We got a Bakahinde Wiley skateboard, which is amazing.
01:47 All my books, I love to read, love culture.
01:50 I'm an Ali groupie.
01:51 Anywhere you go in the house,
01:52 you always see a picture of Ali.
01:55 So this shovel, the gold shovel,
01:57 this is the shovel we use to break ground
01:59 when we opened Carmelo Anthony Center in Syracuse.
02:04 In this corner right here, this is Nelson Mokomo,
02:07 one of the best black artists,
02:09 South African artists there is.
02:12 He's just amazing, good friend of mine.
02:14 I went to his studio in South Africa,
02:16 and this sketch wasn't even done yet.
02:19 But I told him I wanted it, and now it's here on my wall.
02:22 So this is, they watching us,
02:23 and this is our kids seeing that.
02:25 So that's a very powerful piece by Nelson.
02:28 Here is some of my collection, a little bit.
02:31 Some of them are gifts, some of them I purchased.
02:33 I got Ali speeches.
02:35 One of my favorite prizes over here
02:38 is the Malcolm X Ballad or Bullet speech, live.
02:43 I just think that's one of the most
02:45 powerful speeches of all time.
02:47 [upbeat music]
02:50 [upbeat music]
02:52 Working with Casale is always a good, fun,
02:58 when you have a partner and a teammate like that,
03:00 that knows you well and know how you think
03:03 and know your vibe.
03:04 She just worked towards putting that all
03:06 into what this is right here.
03:08 So when you see the different rooms
03:10 and the colors of the rooms,
03:11 it's like different moods of Melo.
03:15 This is a plaque from my mom.
03:17 She gave this to me back in '03.
03:20 20 years ago, she gave this to me just because.
03:24 I love you, Mom.
03:25 All my gold medals, I think that's '08, 2012, and '16.
03:31 Now I'll take you to where things
03:33 really get poppin', in the bar.
03:36 [upbeat music]
03:39 So welcome to the bar.
03:43 This is my high school jersey, Oak Hill, number 22.
03:48 It's like a little celebratory area.
03:49 Celebrating Oak Hill, celebrating retirement,
03:53 celebrating getting drafted in 2003, I'm all wet.
03:56 And then Dom Perignon celebrating my 30th birthday.
04:01 Cassandra did a great, great job at picking these lights.
04:05 Some things that I just let her do,
04:07 like some of the fixtures,
04:09 and you just gotta let her bring her creativity out.
04:12 I'll bring you back here to the bar
04:13 so you can see what we have.
04:15 I got into wine probably mid-2000s,
04:17 not knowing what I was doing.
04:19 To fast forward to now,
04:21 I'm very particular with what I drink.
04:23 So as you can see, this is a lot of first growths,
04:26 Bordeaux's up here.
04:28 First growths is like the big boys of the wine game.
04:33 The winemakers been there forever.
04:35 They the first plants that was grown.
04:37 This is a nice little tour.
04:40 And if you wanna have a good time,
04:41 you come over here and have some wine.
04:43 These are Cassandra's right here.
04:46 She gifted these to me.
04:48 We all know who Malcolm is,
04:49 and we all know who Martin is,
04:51 but James Baldwin, y'all need to go read his books
04:54 and listen to his speeches.
04:55 He's one of the most powerful debaters that's out there.
04:58 [upbeat music]
05:01 This is where the checks get cut.
05:05 Nah, I'm kidding.
05:06 The checks get cut in LA.
05:08 This is kind of my sanctuary.
05:10 My book, you know, you gotta have the memoir behind you,
05:13 Where Tomorrow's Unpromised.
05:15 The chairs are amazing.
05:17 They're comfortable.
05:18 I did design them myself.
05:20 I wanted to give myself a pat on the back.
05:23 This is not animal skin, okay?
05:24 This is not animal.
05:25 This is nothing animal over here, okay?
05:27 This is faux.
05:28 [upbeat music]
05:31 This is the memorabilia wall right here.
05:33 This is the Ali gloves.
05:35 This is big for me.
05:37 The social justice champion award.
05:39 So big shout out to Kareem for making me
05:42 the inaugural winner of that.
05:44 [upbeat music]
05:47 I love lounges.
05:50 I love hotel lounges.
05:52 I love hotel lobbies.
05:54 You can just chill, hang out, have a drink, coffee, tea,
05:57 whatever's your preference.
06:00 So this is that vibe over here.
06:01 Hotel, lobby, lounge, area, chess, books.
06:06 You can always read a book.
06:07 Again, details, life fixtures, amazing.
06:12 You gotta keep the snakes with you, you know, just in case.
06:15 Keep the snakes with you just in case.
06:17 This is, to me, one of Nelson Mocomo's most powerful pieces.
06:23 By the title of this, which is "Forgive Them,"
06:26 I assume that this kid is thinking about
06:30 all that happened to him and it's happening constantly.
06:33 And he's trying to send that message to forgive them, right?
06:37 If you forgive them, then that burden comes off of you.
06:41 You don't have to live with that no more.
06:43 It's on them now.
06:44 And at the end of the day, we forgive or we don't forget.
06:47 [upbeat music]
06:50 I didn't want just a standard dining table.
06:56 I don't have formal dinners.
06:57 I don't sit down at the table and have full-fledged dinners.
07:00 So when I'm in here, I want to eat
07:03 and be creative at the same time, right?
07:05 So Syracuse, you know, you have Define Yourself.
07:08 You have Creative Seven, the production company.
07:11 You have Red Hook.
07:12 You have Innovate.
07:14 You have Baltimore.
07:16 And then you have the flag of Puerto Rico
07:19 and greater than that.
07:20 So it gives it a different vibe, an autistic vibe.
07:23 And you don't feel bored.
07:24 I don't like to feel bored in the dining lounge.
07:28 It's just not about having art in the rooms
07:30 and in the house.
07:31 It's about being very intentional on what you put up.
07:34 You know, each room has a different vibe,
07:36 a different mode.
07:37 So you want to be intentional
07:38 about what you put in those areas,
07:40 the energies that you put in those rooms.
07:42 [upbeat music]
07:45 I call this the bathroom.
07:49 Some people call it the powder room.
07:51 Surrounding, you know, is my guy.
07:55 You know, you got Ali.
07:55 You got the special wallpaper right here.
07:58 This is flavored paper.
07:59 I know it's a lot of Ali,
08:00 but come on, you can't beat that wallpaper right there.
08:03 [upbeat music]
08:06 I collect shoes because I wear shoes,
08:11 to be honest with you.
08:12 I don't collect them to just let them sit.
08:15 I collect them to wear them.
08:17 I'm an active collector.
08:19 In wine, I collect the drink.
08:21 In sneakers, I collect it to wear.
08:22 In clothes, I collect to wear.
08:25 This is my first signature shoe of all time.
08:27 So this is what kicked it off.
08:31 And now I just want to be clear.
08:32 I was the first Jordan brand signature athlete ever.
08:37 The first.
08:40 I was just excited to have my own signature shoe
08:42 with a Jordan brand and a brand like that.
08:45 And then we actually made a great shoe.
08:47 So I will always be grateful for this sneaker right here.
08:51 [upbeat music]
08:54 So these Jordans right here,
08:58 my son actually designed these or created these.
09:01 So these are his, as you can see.
09:02 Cayenne.
09:04 And this is called the What The Cayenne
09:08 instead of What The [beep]
09:09 What The Cayenne.
09:10 My first pair of Jordans I didn't get
09:13 until my senior year in high school at Oak Hill.
09:15 And that was only because they was a
09:18 Jordan sponsored school team.
09:20 And that was my first pair of Jordans.
09:23 So now going from that to being the first
09:27 signature athlete at a Jordan brand,
09:29 after never being able to have a pair,
09:32 it's full circle.
09:35 [upbeat music]
09:37 The best thing about this room is this bed.
09:43 Oversized bed, comfortable bed.
09:47 If you don't sleep well, your day don't go well, right?
09:50 Over here, again, there's Nelson McComo
09:52 everywhere all over the house.
09:53 But this particular portrait is the perfect image.
09:59 It's the perfect energy that you need
10:02 outside of it being a great painting
10:04 and the messaging behind it.
10:06 I just think, you just gotta get a look at the eyes
10:10 and then you can see the soul of this actual room.
10:13 This may be one of the most powerful pieces that I have.
10:17 When we talk about the money,
10:18 money being the root of all evil.
10:20 And some people say you change when you get money, right?
10:23 So when you got the money, put the face on.
10:27 Jay-Z said it best.
10:28 You can try to change, but that's just the top layer.
10:30 You are who you are before you got here.
10:32 So no matter how much money you got,
10:35 you will always be who you are behind that mask.
10:38 [upbeat music]
10:41 This is my mindfulness meditation.
10:49 You can hear the waterfall flowing.
10:51 This room doesn't need art.
10:52 The thoughts in your mind is, that's the brush, right?
10:56 So every way you want to paint this canvas, you do that.
11:00 You know, it was intimidating at one point in time.
11:02 You need to meditate.
11:03 You need to like, it's intimidating.
11:05 But once you find out your space,
11:09 that you can go to that space and you can sit there
11:11 and you can be still and you can breathe
11:13 and you can embrace it, the thoughts,
11:16 but let them go one at a time.
11:18 So I've been able to do that for a while.
11:22 Yeah, it helps me.
11:26 I recommend it.
11:27 And I recommend you to find you a sanctuary like this
11:32 where you can get away for a couple of minutes a day
11:34 and breathe and get your mind right
11:37 and reset and bounce back.
11:39 [upbeat music]
11:42 This is my son's room.
11:48 As you can see, he got, you know, his favorite players,
11:52 his uncles, these are like family to him.
11:56 These are important.
11:57 This was a Stop the Violence campaign.
11:59 This is Trayvon Martin.
12:01 I got Malcolm X.
12:02 We got Jam Master Jay.
12:04 Got Biggie, Tupac, Big L.
12:06 So this was a hip hop series that was created
12:09 for kind of stop the violence and stop the shooting.
12:12 And so you put them on a stop sign and do nine to science.
12:16 And this is his room, 16 years old.
12:18 I try to stay out of this room.
12:20 [upbeat music]
12:23 [upbeat music]
12:25 All right, AD.
12:29 I let y'all come in my crib.
12:30 Now it's time for y'all to get on out of here.
12:32 I gotta get back to work.
12:33 See y'all soon.
12:34 Peace out.
12:35 [upbeat music]
12:38 (upbeat music)
12:40 (upbeat music)
