00:00 chasers, Adam, the current runner, is getting dangerously close to his finish location on
00:04 the island of Borkum.
00:05 The good news for the chasers is that, thanks to delays, Adam is now stranded in Münster,
00:09 Germany, where our train should be arriving any minute, giving us a perfect opportunity
00:13 to catch him.
00:14 But he's got one last plan to evade us.
00:18 So I'm gonna stay here, go into the city, far away from where they would arrive, and
00:22 to make sure I don't get caught.
00:29 You know I brought a disguise.
00:31 Ever since last season, I was roasted within an absolute inch of my life, continually,
00:35 until this day, for taking off the wig that I wore.
00:38 Just taking that unbelievably stupid wig off for a second.
00:44 I got him.
00:48 Oh, that sucks so much!
00:51 The problem was, I realized, the wig is way too hot.
00:55 So instead, I've got a sun hat.
00:59 Now the sun hat covers the back of my head and the sides of my head with these flappy
01:03 things, right?
01:04 I throw a mask on, there's no way you're gonna know that that's me.
01:09 Another thing I realized about my disguise, and disguises in general, is the key to them
01:13 is that they can't look like disguises.
01:15 So you have to think, what would go with the hat?
01:17 What would somebody actually wear with this hat?
01:20 And what would also cover up my bright pink shorts?
01:23 Skirt.
01:24 The backpack is reversible.
01:38 Plain gray backpack.
01:39 Totally different vibe.
01:41 They will not be looking for it.
01:43 I have no idea where they are.
01:46 Theoretically, they could have gotten here about ten minutes ago, at the earliest, I
01:52 think.
01:53 I'm gonna do a little bit of my math and guess if they're right.
01:55 I'm gonna guess their train was probably delayed.
02:00 Seemingly every train was delayed.
02:02 Ben, what did the announcement just say?
02:15 The train is delayed for 45 minutes because they, what?
02:19 What do they have to do?
02:20 They're waiting for the replacement crew here.
02:22 They're waiting for the replacement crew.
02:24 Which is a thing, it's a very important thing to do.
02:27 It is currently 733.
02:29 So that means that we would, the rest period would start while this was still stopped here
02:33 in the station, which means we have to get off here and end our day here in Dortmund,
02:38 and not Munster, where Adam is.
02:41 We can get on a train tomorrow morning to Munster and get there before the first train
02:47 to Emden.
02:48 And that definitely won't be delayed.
02:50 And it definitely won't be delayed.
02:51 Because the Deutsche Bahn runs on Germans.
02:53 Oh, it's time to be real.
03:00 Tomorrow morning, I'm gonna have to find some way to sneak onto the train at 7.
03:07 It'll get me to Emden.
03:10 I have the coins for it.
03:11 I just have to get on it.
03:12 I mean, I just literally have no idea where they are.
03:15 They might not even be in the city.
03:16 They might not even be near the city.
03:18 They also might already be here.
03:21 How would you rate our performance today?
03:24 I would say our performance was fine.
03:27 I would say the Deutsche Bahn's performance was confusing.
03:32 Hello.
03:33 I'd like to declare ourselves done.
03:35 We are declaring day one done for the chasers.
03:39 We are stopping here.
03:40 We will be here at 6am.
03:43 God, I'm so out of it.
03:46 Goodbye.
03:47 Oh, you can hear the bell.
03:48 That's nice.
03:49 Yeah, so it's 8pm.
03:50 So, now it's the rest period.
03:55 We'll pick this up at this exact spot tomorrow morning.
04:00 Like Adam said, now it's the rest period.
04:02 All players will go to a hotel for the night.
04:04 We will resume from the exact spots we ended tomorrow morning at 6am.
04:08 That 6am start is pretty unfortunate for Adam.
04:11 There's not a train to Emden until 7.07, meaning he's stuck in Moonster until then.
04:16 But there is a train that Ben and I can take to Moonster that gets in at 6.54, meaning
04:19 that if all goes well, we'll have the chance to catch him.
04:22 All right, good morning.
04:24 Welcome back to Moonster, Germany, where we are very scared and worried.
04:29 The important thing is that I need to get on a train at 7am in an hour from now.
04:35 And if they're here, that means I'm going to have to sneak past them to get onto that
04:41 train.
04:42 They might not be anywhere near here.
04:43 They might be very far away.
04:44 That would be very funny.
04:45 If I'm in disguise and they're very far away, cut to them being very far away.
04:48 Hello.
04:49 It is 6am.
04:52 Everything is totally fine.
04:53 And everything continues to be totally fine.
04:55 Absolutely great.
04:57 So now we are going to hop on a train to Moonster.
04:59 Which is going to be on time.
05:02 Is that what that means?
05:14 It can't possibly mean that.
05:17 Well it's not on there.
05:20 Zugfalthof.
05:23 I know what that means.
05:27 Yeah.
05:29 Why?
05:31 He's going to be able to make it to Emden.
05:36 And we're not.
05:40 We're going to be able to make it to Emden eventually.
05:44 I'm so exposed.
05:47 If they're here, there's no way that they don't get me.
05:50 I'm just like, there's no one around.
05:54 Literally like every shape I see, I think is them.
05:57 Like, I also, it doesn't help that I don't have my glasses on.
06:01 So I'll just see like a blurry set of colors and think it's like Sam's hat.
06:05 There is an 8.05am to Emden.
06:08 So we get on this delayed train to Moonster.
06:10 We miss the first train to Emden.
06:13 Adam is on that train probably.
06:15 We get on the next train to Emden.
06:18 And hopefully he's still stuck there because the ferry doesn't leave, I think, until 12.30.
06:29 Adam probably thinks we have like accidentally gone to Amsterdam or something.
06:35 Like, it's gotta seem so strange.
06:41 I would at least be paranoid if I were him.
06:54 I'm going to go home and board the train.
06:56 I figure I'll sit in a side seat and look out the window so that if they were to board,
07:03 they wouldn't be able to see my face.
07:17 Okay, this is our train to...
07:19 Do you want that one or that one?
07:21 Let's go to that one.
07:22 Okay.
07:23 That one looks better.
07:24 Oh, here we go.
07:25 Yes!
07:26 Oh, really?
07:27 I mean, unless they are somehow at a station above me, we're making it to Emden.
07:49 Adam has sent us a...
07:50 A Yee-Haw emoji?
07:51 A cowboy emoji?
07:52 Which one's that?
07:53 I don't know what Yee-Haw means.
08:01 I don't know what Yee-Haw means.
08:02 I think it means that he got on that train.
08:05 Oh, I guess he was probably expecting us to get him before he got on.
08:08 Do you think he thinks he's like constantly swerving us or something?
08:11 Well, yeah.
08:12 Yeah.
08:13 Adam, I'm sure whatever you're doing is really smart and cool, but you can chill out a little
08:18 bit.
08:19 Yeah.
08:20 This is my breakfast.
08:27 Okay, so I'm about to get to Emden, which is very exciting.
08:41 There's a ferry from Emden to Borkum.
08:43 If I can get to Borkum, to the lighthouse, I mean, I win automatically.
08:48 The problem is I'm getting into Emden at 9.09.
08:52 There's a ferry at 9, so I'll miss that.
08:56 And the next one is not until 12.30.
08:58 I have to imagine that they will make it to Emden at that time.
09:02 I mean, it's very, very possible that they're already on their way here now.
09:17 Getting to Emden is here.
09:28 I don't know.
09:29 I don't know what his plan is.
09:30 I don't know what he's going to do when he gets to Emden.
09:32 Well, that's the thing.
09:33 He has to know at this point that once he gets there, he's going to have three and a half
09:37 hours until the ferry.
09:39 So he's got to have more of a plan than just let's sit around.
09:43 I think the move is going to be get to Emden, stay in disguise, do challenges, see if I
09:50 can save up for a power up to slip past them at the last minute, potentially.
09:59 You know.
10:00 We'll have to see.
10:01 There is no way that could be real.
10:16 You crazy for this one, Germany.
10:18 All right, so I'm not going to double up because that costs 250 coins.
10:24 And right now I do have enough coins to take the ferry.
10:28 So I don't want to risk losing those like, you know, first do no harm, basically.
10:35 Cursed, you are now a knight.
10:41 You may only walk or run in the pattern of a knight.
10:44 For every three steps forward you take, you must take one step to the side.
10:47 You will remain a knight until you go to a castle.
10:50 All right, well.
10:54 Is there a castle here?
10:57 Okay, no.
10:59 So there are not any castles.
11:01 Yeah, I think I have to veto this.
11:06 I think if my whole goal is to avoid detection, I can't be walking in a weird pattern.
11:20 Not great.
11:21 Not great.
11:22 Okay.
11:23 All right, let's just kind of wander in the middle of nowhere, shall we?
11:27 Let's get far away from where they will go.
11:31 Do you have a message for Adam, Sam?
11:40 Hydrate or nitrate.
11:45 Maybe I'll get like a coffee or something.
11:47 That would be nice.
11:48 You know, make a day out of it.
11:50 Make a morning of it.
11:52 All right, veto period's up.
11:54 Draw another card.
11:56 This be good this time.
12:01 Find an American flag.
12:02 Find a real American flag or a depiction of American flag in the wild.
12:06 The flag cannot be created by you in any way.
12:10 Okay.
12:12 All right, I don't think I want to veto this again.
12:21 I need to start earning coins if I want to be able to buy that power up.
12:24 Okay, let's think.
12:27 Let's think.
12:28 Let's think.
12:29 All right, so my first thought on this is a grocery store.
12:35 I feel like a grocery store would be likely to have American-made products, and then those
12:44 might have an American flag on them.
12:47 Oh no, they're all back towards the train station.
12:51 Oh crap.
12:52 Okay.
12:53 Because they could be getting into that train station within 20 minutes.
12:59 Okay.
13:00 We're going to run to the grocery store.
13:03 We're going to look for flags on the way, and I should be able to get to the grocery
13:09 store and out before they could get here.
13:14 Life360 thinks that Adam is driving.
13:18 Do you think he's driving, or do you think he's just looking at...
13:20 Oh, he could be on the bus.
13:21 He could be looking at...
13:22 We're going like eight miles per hour, so he must be on the bus.
13:25 Come on.
13:26 Pick up the pace.
13:27 All right, we're in a little more of a downtown-y area.
13:32 We've got an Italian flag here, and this wine shop maybe.
13:37 Maybe like on one of these ads.
13:41 Domino's Pizza, come on.
13:42 Come on, give it to me, Domino's.
13:43 Yeah, nothing.
13:44 All right, we got to hurry.
13:45 They're going to be here in nine minutes.
13:46 We are not letting them get out of Amtrak unless we accidentally do.
14:02 Unless we accidentally do, we won't.
14:05 I wish everything was not closed.
14:08 No, there's a bank.
14:09 Nope.
14:10 Okay, all right, we might have to veto this.
14:13 But we're three minutes from the grocery store.
14:16 They might not even be coming here yet.
14:20 They might not be anywhere nearby.
14:23 Okay, it's only been two minutes.
14:27 We haven't walked to where he is.
14:32 Then maybe we can just get him there.
14:36 Oh, come on.
14:37 It's like a novelty shop.
14:39 It's got so much American stuff.
14:41 Simpsons.
14:42 Come on.
14:43 Oh, that's so close.
14:44 That looks like an American-themed thing.
14:48 Oh, shit.
14:50 Yes.
14:51 Yes, there.
14:52 Boom.
14:53 That is an American flag.
14:56 All right, challenge complete.
15:00 Oh, my God.
15:04 I did so much running.
15:09 All right, we need to disguise up now.
15:13 Do another challenge.
15:15 See what we get.
15:18 All right.
15:20 New card.
15:22 Be a good one.
15:26 Come on.
15:28 Cursed!
15:29 You now have wet hat syndrome.
15:35 For the rest of your run, your hat must be wet at all times.
15:38 In order to ensure your hat remains sopping wet, you must completely drench your hat in
15:42 water every half hour.
15:44 If at the half hour mark you are unable to soak your hat, you may not advance in the
15:48 game until you have done so.
15:51 Okay, well, this is gonna be funny with this hat, but that gets me really, really close
16:00 to the coins I need.
16:01 Basically, any other challenge, and I could afford the power-up.
16:05 Spy water.
16:12 All right.
16:17 You ready to destroy Adam?
16:18 Yes, we are here in Emden, where Adam still is, and he is, what did you say, only like
16:26 an eight-minute walk from...
16:28 Eight, ten-minute walk, yeah.
16:30 From the station, so the key is we've gotta sneak up on him.
16:34 Yeah, we can't let this get into a foot race right there.
16:38 Nice.
16:39 Uh, hello.
16:40 Three water.
16:41 Three water.
16:42 Awesome.
16:43 Danke.
16:44 Guten Tag.
16:45 Okay.
16:46 Awesome.
16:47 He's, uh, he's moving again.
17:11 Maybe we want to get in a...
17:13 Taxi?
17:14 Well, it's so close that I kind of doubt it's worth it.
17:17 See, I see.
17:18 He's like in a big park or something.
17:19 All right, I'm gonna run for just a little bit to try to just build up some distance
17:23 on them.
17:24 If they have just gotten here, then I'll probably just transition into like walking as far away
17:28 as I can get.
17:29 He is on this road, but he's quite far, but we need to not get spot.
17:35 Let's actually cross the road, 'cause that'll restrict our sight line.
17:39 Okay, okay.
17:40 Okay, he's going further that way now.
17:43 Okay.
17:44 Is he on the same road?
17:45 Yes.
17:46 He was just in this park.
17:48 When we got to the station, he was in this park.
17:50 Okay.
17:51 So we're not far at all.
17:57 Look, it's the water.
18:04 That's cool.
18:05 Okay.
18:06 Well, he's by water.
18:11 He's already done the thing.
18:12 He's by water?
18:14 Yeah, he's like by some little canal or inlet or something.
18:19 We are hot on his tail.
18:23 Okay.
18:24 So the key is, Ben, we have to spot him before he spots us.
18:28 And we've got to be really smart about when to go in for the tag.
18:33 Okay, so that's the waterway.
18:35 You said he's on the other side.
18:36 Here, you see?
18:37 Here, Ben, look.
18:38 We're right there.
18:39 Well, I think what we should do, one of us post up there, the other one move in from
18:45 here.
18:46 From where we are right now?
18:48 On this road.
18:49 He's probably doing a challenge and not paying attention.
18:50 Alright, I think I'm far enough away from the train station that I have time to pull
18:56 a quick challenge.
18:57 Shuffle, shuffle.
18:58 Cursed.
18:59 For the rest of your run, you may only take transportation that leaves an odd numbered
19:07 times.
19:08 This is based on the last digit of scheduled departure times.
19:12 Nope.
19:14 Nope.
19:15 Definitely can't do that.
19:22 That's a veto.
19:27 So, you understand where you're going?
19:33 Yeah, so I'm going down this road.
19:35 Down this road to this crossroad there.
19:37 Yep.
19:38 Okay.
19:39 I'll hide behind this corner.
19:41 Yeah, yeah.
19:42 Text me once you've arrived.
19:44 Okay.
19:45 Good luck.
19:46 You too.
19:47 Well, shoot.
19:48 If they're not here yet, I have to guess that they'll be here soon.
20:08 I think we gotta just keep moving.
20:10 I think we gotta just keep in motion here.
20:13 Okay, so I'm here, Sam's here, Adam's there.
20:17 It looks like he's coming my way.
20:20 He's probably about to cross right up there.
20:32 And then I will follow behind.
20:36 Oh my god.
20:43 He's in disguise.
20:44 Yes.
20:45 Hello?
20:48 Ben?
20:49 Yeah, he's close.
20:50 He's coming to you and he's in disguise.
20:52 Okay, oh, he's in disguise.
20:54 I saw him.
20:55 He's in like a sundress or something.
20:56 Sundress, okay, got it.
20:57 Got it, got it, got it.
20:58 He's coming here, Adam.
21:16 Oh my god, they're running.
21:26 There's no escape.
21:30 I believe in you, Ben.
21:35 I just don't think.
21:36 I don't think there is a way out of that for me.
21:44 I surely don't think you're getting on the ferry after that.
21:56 What a hell of a run.
22:01 Well done.
22:02 We got him.
22:03 Let's go.
22:04 Where the hell were you guys?
22:05 Ben, what's your prediction on the first thing Adam will say when we catch him?
22:18 Where were you guys?
22:20 Where the hell were you guys this morning?
22:22 I thought you were going to be in Munster.
22:23 Oh my god.
22:24 Wait, are they going to the bottom?
22:25 Yeah, they're bad guys.
22:26 Bad trains.
22:27 They have f***ed us so many times.
22:31 I can't even begin to describe.
22:33 Is there Sam?
22:34 Yeah, I see him.
22:35 Hi, Sam.
22:36 Hello.
22:37 How's it going?
22:38 Nice little breezy outfit you got there.
22:41 Did it throw you off at all?
22:42 What?
22:43 No.
22:44 I saw it immediately and was like, "Oh, he's in a disguise."
22:46 Yeah, I was worried about that.
22:48 Well, anyway.
22:49 I mean, good luck getting out of my territory, boys.
22:52 Anyways, in the wise words of Adam Chase, "Cars, cars, give me your cars."
22:56 In fairness, in fairness, I really needed them.
23:01 Okay, okay, you're here.
23:04 Thank you.
23:05 It's 1031.
23:06 I'm leaving.
23:07 Goodbye.
23:08 Bye, Sam.
23:09 Good luck, Sam.
23:10 Thank you, Ben.
23:11 Okay, that was pretty perfect timing.
23:14 I have just enough time to make the next train south to Munster.
23:17 Back at the station.
23:18 Deutsche Bahn, please don't let me down.
23:23 Yeah, we just got to get Sam.
23:29 I think he has to, I think he basically has to go all the way back to Munster because
23:34 these are all like tiny regional stations.
23:36 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:38 Well, actually, if you were trying to go directly to Paris, it wouldn't have you going back
23:45 to Munster.
23:46 Because like this route gets him into the Netherlands pretty quickly.
23:50 Yeah, here we go.
23:51 Yeah, this.
23:52 This is what I'm going to do.
23:53 I think this is what he'll take.
23:54 I'm going to Salzburg and Salzburg to Hengelo, Hengelo to Zutphen, Zutphen to Breda, Breda
23:59 to Antwerpen, Antwerpen to Paris.
24:03 I think that is likely, right?
24:06 I bet you that he goes through the Netherlands just to avoid Deutsche Bahn.
24:09 All right, slight change of plans.
24:12 I've done some research and I think there's a better option than going all the way back
24:16 to Munster because I can get off at a stop before them called Salzburg.
24:21 And from there, there is a 35 minute transfer to a train over the border to the Netherlands.
24:28 So we're going from Deutschland to Dutchland.
24:31 I'm sorry.
24:32 What I can do after that is I can string together a bunch of regional trains, kind of not through
24:38 big cities at all.
24:39 And the advantage is they will mathematically have to stay one hour behind on basically
24:46 the exact same trains.
24:48 But I will have some decent like 30, 20, 40 minute connections where I can hopefully earn
24:54 enough budget to be able to keep going.
24:56 And I think it gets better because the advantage of getting down to Belgium is from there,
25:01 the fastest route for Ben to get to his destination, the fastest route is through Paris, my zone.
25:08 So he's going to be incentivized to go deeper into my zone, which will advantage me in the
25:12 long term.
25:13 So I think this is the best bet.
25:14 All right.
25:15 We're out of our freeze period and Sam has gotten on the train that we expected him to
25:20 get on.
25:21 And there is another train that does the same thing.
25:24 And what, like half an hour, like 30 minutes from now, it's just an hour behind Sam.
25:29 Can we buy water on the way?
25:31 We can.
25:32 I'm so thirsty.
25:33 I accidentally bought all sparkling water.
25:35 Wasserbetten?
25:36 I think Wasserbetten sells waterbends.
25:40 Oh.
25:41 Oh my gosh, Ben.
25:44 Ben.
25:45 You have to get in Germany, a truly sour Glühwurmtion.
25:49 Oh, they're Glowworm.
25:53 Ben, you can finally find out what a Glowworm tastes like.
25:56 I really want to know what they taste like.
25:59 Don't eat them.
26:00 You can't eat them.
26:01 Ben really liked to eat one.
26:04 Oh, we're on the train to Munster, but in a much more real sense, Adam.
26:10 Where are we?
26:11 Wait, I was chewing.
26:12 Oh.
26:13 I'm going to get dry.
26:18 We're in the snack zone, baby.
26:21 That's true.
26:29 Today we're going to be having some sour Glowwormtion.
26:37 It tastes like I'm eating a real animal.
26:45 All right.
27:04 Welcome to Salzburg.
27:05 Okay.
27:06 I'm going to get my card shuffled.
27:09 Let's hope it's a good one.
27:11 It seems that he is stopping in Salzburg, which means he's probably going to transfer to Angelo.
27:17 So this also means that if he f***s himself on a challenge, if he does pull a challenge
27:21 here and he f***s himself, we'll get him there.
27:24 We will.
27:25 Yeah.
27:26 So Sam, if you're pulling a challenge there, good luck, buddy, because you're going to
27:30 need it.
27:31 Let's hope it's a good one.
27:34 Cursed!
27:36 You are now being ratatouille'd.
27:40 The next move you make will be decided by a rat.
27:42 Please access the Smithsonian Zoo's Naked Mole Rat live feed and go to camera two.
27:47 Whatever direction you first see a rat cross the camera, you must travel at least two miles
27:51 in that direction before continuing.
27:54 Cursed.
27:55 Oh no.
27:57 Oh no.
27:59 I've been ratatouille'd.
28:04 Oh no.
28:09 All right.
28:10 I wonder what's going to happen.
28:12 If you're wondering what's going to happen, you can watch the next episode right now by
28:16 signing up for Nebula.
28:18 What else you can get on Nebula is the Layover podcast.
28:21 It's the Nebula exclusive companion podcast to Jetlag.
28:25 We do an episode every single week correlating to each episode of the season itself, explaining
28:29 a little bit more of the strategy, explaining what happens off camera, answering for our
28:34 failures, explaining some of the behind-the-scenes production stuff.
28:37 And actually, we have a lot of that this episode because we talk about what would have happened
28:42 if Adam had just won the season at the beginning of day two after we flew all the way to France.
28:48 Like, very right away, baby.
28:50 To film a whole season of Jetlag.
28:52 It would not have been awesome, but we did have a plan.
28:55 We did have a plan for if that had happened, so we explain all of that in the Layover episode
28:59 this week.
29:00 And also on Nebula, there's all kinds of great other stuff from all of your other favorite
29:04 creators.
29:05 There's a ton of Nebula originals.
29:07 Those are exclusive projects that are only on Nebula.
29:10 Things like The Prince, a giant stage play from Philosophy Tube.
29:13 Things like Night of the Coconut, an entire feature-length film from Patrick H. Willems.
29:17 Stuff from real science, real life lore, real engineering, all of the reals.
29:22 A bunch of other things.
29:24 And also, you know, when you sign up for Nebula, you're helping to support independent
29:28 creators because Nebula is creator-founded and creator-owned.
29:31 And if you want to sign up for Nebula for a limited time, they're doing something a
29:34 little unusual, lifetime memberships.
29:37 So for $300, a one-time payment, you can become a member of Nebula for life.
29:42 Now, I want to be clear.
29:43 This is not necessarily the cheapest way to get access to Nebula.
29:46 That would be the annual plan, $30 a year with our code.
29:49 This is for if you really want to support the show and you really want to support Nebula.
29:53 This gives the show and Nebula a lot of cash on hand right now that we can invest in future
29:59 big projects, future Jetlag seasons and future Nebula projects.
30:02 And do that without taking outside investment.
30:05 So if you want to sign up for Nebula, whether it's a monthly plan, an annual plan, or you
30:11 want to go big and do the lifetime membership and really, really support Nebula or the show,
30:15 but getting any of them would be great, head over to nebula.tv/jetlag.
30:20 Please do use the code jetlag so that they know that we sent you and thanks so much.
30:26 Goodbye.
30:27 (upbeat music)
