Afire (2023): A Slow-Burning Drama About Desire, Jealousy, and the Fragility of Human Relationships Movie

Christian Petzold's Afire is a slow-burning but ultimately devastating drama about a group of friends on holiday as a forest fire rages closer and closer. The film stars Thomas Schubert as Leon, a self-absorbed writer who is struggling to finish his second novel. He is joined by his friend Felix (Langston Uibel), a cheerful artist, and Nadja (Paula Beer), a mysterious woman who Leon is immediately drawn to.

The three friends spend their days swimming, drinking, and talking, but there is an underlying tension in the air. Leon is constantly irritated by Felix, and he is obsessed with Nadja, even though she is clearly not interested in him. As the forest fire gets closer, the tension between the three friends reaches a boiling point.
