00:00 So on we go, this is the sixth round in the lightweight division.
00:10 Michael Webber-Cain's got a very noisy fan base from Greg Yarmouth with him tonight.
00:16 The 24 year old, this is a professional contest.
00:19 He wears the blue and white.
00:24 In against Sam Melville from Stockport.
00:26 26 year old, three wins to his name, six defeats.
00:30 But does have a bit of ambition about him.
00:32 But what can Webber-Cain do who again wants to please this boisterous crowd here in the
00:39 York Hall.
00:40 All seven of his contests have gone the distance so far.
00:48 Michael Webber-Cain or Mikey as he goes by.
00:55 That's something of a home from home now.
00:57 This is his third fight here at the York Hall so he knows the place very, very well.
01:02 It's always good when you can sell a ticket Lee.
01:05 Yep, sometimes that can be an issue as well though you can try and please the crowd too
01:11 much and get carried away.
01:13 But definitely not the case for Webber-Cain.
01:15 Early on he's come out, he's looking relaxed, he's picking his shots well.
01:19 He's settling into the first round nice and well.
01:22 He's touching up with the jab, whipping that right hook into the body.
01:26 Good positive start for sure.
01:28 So yeah, sometimes a crowd can be an actual disadvantage for some fighters.
01:33 Let it get too much.
01:37 Too keen, too keen and just the game plan goes out the window and they just come and
01:42 try and knock out and please the crowd.
01:44 But Webber-Cain's come out, he's doing the right thing, he's getting behind his jab and
01:48 he's easing into this fight nice.
01:51 Good shot to the body as well from Webber-Cain there which Melville seemed to take well.
01:57 Round round the black and silver from Stockport who goes by the name The Skimmer, he's a plasterer
02:05 by trade.
02:06 Good work again to the body from Webber-Cain.
02:11 That's been a very assured start from him.
02:15 Yeah, he looks relaxed, very composed, slipping, letting the power shots go at the right times.
02:25 He did just catch one on the way in there but then let his hands go and those body shots
02:29 in really excellent work there.
02:32 Yeah, but what I'm liking as well is the variation of the power like I've said before.
02:38 He's not whamming his shots away every single shot trying to hurt his opponent, he's varying
02:43 the power and that's key to eventually breaking down your opponents.
02:50 Good work to the body again in the corner.
03:07 Sam Melville, well he appears to have taken it very well, you can see the reddening of
03:12 the torso though, Webber-Cain's done the damage.
03:16 Yeah, very positive first round from Webber-Cain, was impressed with that come out, picked his
03:24 shots well, relaxed, catching the shots, small little steps forward, little adjustments here
03:31 and there, variation in the punches.
03:34 Yeah, good up and I'm sure his partner will be happy with that.
03:41 Just in the corner there, Sam Melville getting some instructions from Joe Pennington, being
03:47 around the block knows it all, Joe Pennington with that northside gym in East Manchester
03:52 that's produced so many good amateur pros over the years.
03:55 Spent a lot of time on the road with these fighters, Joe Pennington, but a very experienced
04:00 man and he'll know that his man Sam is in with a very decent kid in the shape of Michael
04:08 Webber-Cain tonight.
04:11 So the second round of scheduled for six and everywhere you look there's lightweights all
04:28 over the place at the moment, it's just, it's fantastic.
04:35 Gavin Gwynne leading the pack, British champion, defended his title last week on the match
04:40 room show, but I'm sure all these fighters in the not too distant future will be wanting
04:45 to get their hands on that belt, one of the most prestigious belts in boxing for sure,
04:49 one that I take great pride in winning and I think it's every British boxer's dream of
04:54 winning a British title.
04:55 Well as Martin McDonagh and Ben Smith will edge a step closer to fighting for an English
05:03 and a British title if they claim that southern area belt which tops the bill tonight of course.
05:11 This one shaping up to be a decent contest as well and again clever work from Webber-Cain.
05:18 Melville's trying to get a foothold in this fight, he's showing ambition.
05:24 I'm sure he'll get a good side, he's got a lot going for him.
05:30 Good.
05:31 I can understand this, he's a mighty good fighter, mighty mighty.
05:38 Kentis John.
05:39 Kentis John.
05:40 Good.
05:41 Mike Kentis John.
05:42 Kentis John.
05:43 That's his new name, he's a butt at this.
05:44 Kentis John.
05:45 Kentis John.
05:46 Webber-Cain still just edging forward, still controlling matters.
06:02 He's taking Melville's jab away as well, you can see him parrying it away with his right
06:08 glove every time.
06:09 Good defensive work and then clawing back the initiative and then taking charge with
06:15 his jab and landing some nice solo jabs as well.
06:19 Good uppercut at the end of that exchange from Webber-Cain.
06:36 So are you impressed with the shot selection as well?
06:37 You were talking about varying of power, which I know is something that you're always keen
06:40 to see fighters do.
06:41 Yeah, I feel like he's done that well.
06:43 He's done it more so in the last round, I haven't seen that as much this round.
06:48 I'd like to see him go back to that in the next round, variation of the punches and power,
06:54 that's definitely how you break your opponents down.
06:58 I feel like a lot of the power shots are now the same and they're not having as much of
07:04 an effect as what they were in the first round.
07:07 However, Stalin's full control.
07:08 Another Michael Webber-Cain round, no doubt about that, but Melville is playing his part
07:25 in this.
07:26 Yeah, two rounds in, the place is starting to heat up now, you can see it on the fighters,
07:40 both sweating, it's very warm in here.
07:44 You know all about it, so just explain from your point of view, when you make the ring
07:48 walk here and you get into this ring and you've got your fans here and it's so hot and intense
07:53 and close in.
07:54 Yeah, no, see, it's funny, you walk, obviously you do the ring walk, the minute you step
07:59 in that ring when them bright lights are on you, it's almost as if it's like a heater,
08:03 it's like a heat on you and then the minute you start getting a sweat up, you've probably
08:09 already got your sweat up from your warm up, but I mean, getting into the fight, you just
08:14 feel the heat more and more and that's why it's key and crucial to take the minute's
08:18 rest and get your water in when you can as well at the end of the rounds, because it's
08:23 very warm in here.
08:24 It's not in a venue like this though, you feel the heat much more in a venue like this.
08:27 For sure, York Hall is one of the hottest venues I've ever boxed in, yes.
08:36 Because it is so small and it is so packed and the crowds are almost on top of you as
08:40 well, it's very warm when you're in there.
08:41 I think there's a swimming pool next door as well, isn't there, I think that probably
08:44 adds to the whole thing as well.
08:47 Yeah.
08:48 Melville on the front foot in the start of the fight.
08:54 Yeah, the first time probably in the fight.
08:55 That's true, he's trying to have a go here, trying to make his mark on this.
09:02 Webber-Kain controlling the first two rounds.
09:05 Again, good work.
09:09 That's better with the variation there, that's what I wanted to see more of in the last round,
09:13 he started off that well there.
09:15 I'd like to see more of that for sure, definitely, that's good work.
09:19 Switching up from the right to the left.
09:21 The right hook to the body seems to be the favoured shot as well.
09:24 Yeah, and he's touching with the double jab upstairs as well to occupy Melville, keep
09:29 his hands up, try and lift the elbows to sink them body shots in.
09:32 And when you do touch and vary your power, and you don't load up with your shots, you
09:47 should feel like you could do that all night, there shouldn't be a reason why you start
09:52 feeling the pace because you're not loading up on your shots, you're enjoying yourself,
09:56 you're varying the power, and you're in your comfort zone.
09:59 And that's what I've seen Webber-Kain doing in the first round, he sort of went away from
10:02 it in the second, but going back to it in this round.
10:07 Just a clever hook behind, around that guard of Melville there from Webber-Kain.
10:23 Tough boy Melville, he's taking some good body shots, and he's coming back, he's firing
10:28 back every time.
10:30 Well he's in with a losing record, but he's got three wins on that record, just six defeats,
10:39 so he probably feels he can maybe turn the career around.
10:43 Some of the guys that Webber-Kain have been in have been the more seasoned journeymen
10:46 if you like, that are not doing what Melville's doing and trying to put it on him a little
10:51 bit, so it has been surely a really good tick in terms of the box of education as a young
10:56 pro.
10:57 Yeah, this is a lot better this round as well from Webber-Kain, he's chipping away upstairs
11:02 and dropping the odd one down to the body, switching southpaw.
11:06 You can tell Melville is starting to feel the shots a little bit, but always in there,
11:11 always firing back.
11:13 Tough, tough, durable fighter.
11:15 Another halfway stage of this contest.
11:35 Webber-Kain thoroughly in control of the contest.
11:43 He's got a nice start to the jab out, but it's the body work really that's caught the
11:47 eye.
11:48 He's focused the body, but that's where he likes to be, isn't he?
12:01 He likes to occupy Melville up top with a couple of touches upstairs and then drops
12:06 the nice six of body shots in.
12:11 That's when your body shots will have more of an effect if you occupy Melville in this
12:17 instance upstairs, try and lift the elbows and then sink the body shots in.
12:22 It's been impressive for you round so far.
12:41 Melville still tries to get his own jab working, but some painful counter shots from Webber-Kain.
12:47 Again, the
13:08 cheers go up around the small York Hall here from the travelling Norfolk fan base of Webber-Kain
13:16 every time he has a big shot sink into head or body of Melville.
13:26 Credit to his own conditioning, he's still in there slinging under the lights, those
13:30 hellishly bright and hot lights here at York Hall.
13:34 Yeah, firing back every time Melville, very tough man.
13:49 Smothering his work just a little bit, Webber-Kain, I'd like to see him just take his time a bit
13:55 more, set up his shots like he was doing in the previous round and he'll land them in
14:00 more effect, however that was a good right hand over the top there.
14:10 Yeah, the referee is wanting him to work inside there, that's where Webber-Kain should be
14:26 getting his head on Melville's chest and sinking more of them body shots in.
14:35 There's just an element of weariness creeping in, it's on Melville's point of view.
14:43 He's getting a little bit scruffy at times here now in this fourth round.
15:04 Yeah it's been a high pace, four rounds in, you can see it's just slightly dropped a little
15:10 bit in this round, gone a little bit more scrappy.
15:14 However both still firing punches and it's a very entertaining fight.
15:19 Credit to Melville, he's tough and he's firing back every single time.
15:24 He's taken some big body shots, he's come back.
15:30 Well I think Melville's providing a different kind of opposition to Webber-Kain's last fight,
15:36 that was against Christian Navies who we will see a bit later on against Robert Caswell.
15:41 But Navies who is a very, very seasoned journeyman who can really make it a frustrating night's
15:48 work.
15:49 Melville though, he's really trying it, you know he's in there trying to sling at every
15:53 opportunity, trying to throw those shots, trying to get a foothold.
15:58 Webber-Kain from the off has been in control, no doubt about that.
16:02 You mentioned before full credit to Sam Melville, the stock bought man who's going to leave
16:09 everything in there.
16:10 A good right hand from Webber-Kain, the start of the fifth round.
16:35 Ahead this time, the signature hooks to body.
16:39 Yeah he would do really, really well to get rid of Melville here.
16:45 I think he's a gritty, tough man who's going to be very hard to stop.
16:50 A bit of nose damage though from Melville's perspective, I think that right hand that
16:55 did the damage before.
16:56 It's going to make life a bit more awkward if that damage is significant for Melville.
17:03 To his credit.
17:04 Yeah that's back, better for Melville, back with the touches and then whipping the body
17:10 shot back in.
17:11 If he kept more of that up, I wouldn't be surprised if he did get rid of his right hand.
17:16 And then an uppercut as well, oh that was heavy artillery from Webber-Kain and I'm not
17:21 sure, nope, that's ruled out straight away.
17:24 Sam Melville in plenty of trouble there.
17:26 The referee just wants him in the recovery position.
17:29 Well it was a choppy right hand and then I think an uppercut that just did the damage.
17:40 Just as I said it, that was from the touches, it came off the touches, it was touch and
17:45 touch and touch and given Melville a comfortable environment and then boom, right hand over
17:53 the top because he was that used to him going down to the body, he whipped it upstairs,
17:56 there you go.
17:57 A devastating shot, I hope Melville is okay.
18:03 Well the first shot clearly did the damage and obviously the follow-up shot as well when
18:08 I think the senses of Sam Melville had gone at that point so that's the worry there that
18:12 he took the full-on second blow.
18:18 Melville now being paid to him in that corner.
18:25 Webber-Kain and his team very respectful in that corner now, just want to make sure that
18:29 obviously Sam Melville is okay.
18:32 He's had oxygen in the corner, I think he's going to be fine, he's getting to his feet
18:35 now to the relief of everyone.
18:37 What a great campaigner as well, Sam Melville who was always trying to find an opening in
18:44 that fight, always trying to fight back.
18:46 Yeah just as I was saying as well, it's going to take a real big shot, a real big statement
18:51 to get rid of this man because he's a very, very tough, durable fighter.
18:55 He was taking big shots from the first belt, didn't look like he was going to be bothered
19:00 at all.
19:02 Just as I said, a devastating shot.
19:05 Glad to see he's okay.
19:08 Yeah he's speaking freely with the medics and his trainer Joe Pennington's in there
19:12 now, just wants him on the stool.
19:13 I think he's just taking his time and they're all taking their time now, they're going to
19:16 hoist him up and yeah, I think Sam seems fine, he's responding well and that's the most important
19:21 thing of course.
19:24 Michael Webber-Kain moves to 8-0 and that's the first stoppage on his record as well.
19:28 It'll be a time for him to celebrate as long as Sam Melville of course.
19:34 He's fine, I think Joe Pennington again, very experienced, very seasoned, he's had a good
19:37 look at him.
19:38 He's on his feet, he's on strong legs as well there Sam Melville, so good to see.
19:45 I've got to say as well, the medics did a sterling job there as well just to make sure
20:06 that Sam Melville was immediately seen to and that's very precautionary work.
20:11 This is what I mean, the British box on border control, one of the best in the world when
20:14 it comes to keeping the fighters safe and as you can see the referee right away was
20:19 straight on the case.
20:20 It was devastating from Webber-Kain as well, obviously it was the first right hand that
20:24 did the damage, it was the second shot that made us worry because you felt that Webber-Kain
20:29 was out there, at this point there you felt he was out anyway and that was a very, very
20:35 heavy shot.
20:36 But he's got this medicine, he's going to make his way to the center of the ring as
20:40 well.
20:41 Or maybe not actually, precautionary, they're going to take Sam Melville straight out of
20:46 the ring just to get the once over as well so we can cross to the official result with
20:49 our MC Hoss Raggy.
20:50 Ladies and gentlemen the official time, one minute and three seconds, round number five,
20:51 your winner by TKO, Michael Webber!
20:52 Well the followers from Great Yarmouth are very, very happy with that, as well they should
21:22 be.
21:24 Well, that's it, that's the end of the match.
